do my best when we come on these previews you might dispute this but I really do do my best to try and button myself up and not antagonize Michigan State as much as I sometimes want to in my heart I I do my best of that I’m GNA be honest my heart aches a little bit today that you’re in the Maui Invitational and you got gifted a Colorado team with seven division two transfers while Auburn and Iowa State are battling to the death in the first round on the other side of the bracket and then after shooting 9% against that team you avoid Dan Hurley somehow and you get Penny Hardway all that stands in between you and a Maui Invitational final is Penny Hardway honestly I’m insanely jealous that’s where I’m at on this and uh if you can tell I’m I’m just jealous this is this is crazy that no other way to put it but we talk car we talk about all time like in March you need some luck like your Maui run right now is a March run luck makeup right like everything has broken your way and uh you have a really cool chance to capitalize and while being literally the worst threo shooting team in the country sitting there at six and one in the Maui Invitational final that’s on the table today Gregory how many division one teams are there well I’m just assuming that if you shot 9% on the Maui rims yesterday you’ll probably start 0 for 15 today which would make you the worst team in division Well here here’s here’s your here’s your stat we would have to miss the next 19 attempts to officially be the worst in the country fully on the table for yeah it’s I’m not saying it’s not I’m just I’m throwing the numbers out there yeah yeah um yeah it’s kind of crazy honestly but okay to to the game should be an entertaining game if I can just put aside the fact that Yukon should be playing Michigan State this should be an entertaining game because Memphis has been a really fun watch this season they have been better than a lot of people expected certainly better than I expected sitting here at 5-0 right now 30th on kenpom a team that I think um I think will be a top 25 team most of the season that’s my read on this Memphis team they’ve got great guard play they’ve got age experience they’ve got transfers they’ve got your favorite player in college basketball history in the role that you have always wanted him to play this is Dane dja versus your front Court and yet carts somehow tell me if I’m wrong I think Memphis has the better guards I think Memphis has the better big and yet somehow Michigan State fans feel like really good about this one even though their team can’t make a shot am my off base on that no I I I don’t think so um you know there’s I think there’s other factors obviously to why Michigan State feels good I mean you spoke to it a little bit um the the car What’s the phrase like the cards falling everything falling in your favorite whatever uh idiom that is um being able to play this Memphis team on short rest after they had an overtime battle with Yukon while we kind of had like a nice little Cakewalk with Colorado um this Memphis team is six players deep I think and I I mean obviously they I think they played they played eight guys yesterday but I I think there’s six maybe at best seven deep on this basketball team uh and they do have Dynamic guard play and they do have some good bigs um but I think a lot of people are thinking that Michigan State’s defense will be able to give Memphis guards issues um and also there might be a factor of a little bit of fatigue with this with the Memphis team and then obviously the good old fun game that you like to play when does shooting regression happen cuz can Memphis shoot like this all season no I’ll tell you that right now um if there’s one prediction I have for this game it’s this Tyrese Hunter who had 26 points was the kenpom MVP against Yukon went seven for 10 from three basically played the best game of his career Tyrese Hunter will have an awful stinker performance today and I don’t even think that’s necessarily anything Michigan state will do now don’t get me wrong you guys have great guard Defenders like Jay aens is an elite perimeter Defender Jeremy fears I think can cause him some problems you’ve got different guys you can throw at him as you mentioned you you have so much depth you’re always going to be well rested you can throw Jace you can throw Hollman like you’re always gonna have a good defender on Hunter Hunter is this dude this is what he does he he shows you glimpses of being like the best guard in college basketball and then the next game he puts up a generational stinker that’s the whole story on Tyrese Hunter so Yukon got the bad end of the stick yesterday I think you guys are highly likely to get the good end of the stick which is a good reason for optimism yeah and you know I mean right now Memphis is I think they shot like 50% from three two day two games ago and it made their percentages go down like that’s how well they’re shooting from three they’re currently second in the country uh almost at 48% from three per game and look you know I I understand michingan state has the defensive guys that you mentioned right but here’s the scary part for me as Michigan State fan sometimes defense isn’t enough sometimes you play good D and there’s better o and Memphis has like better offense guards you know what I’m saying like we we we’ll talk on our Channel we’ll talk about it when we get to it one of my main takeaways from the Memphis Yukon game is that Memphis guards just stared yukon’s guards dead in their eyes and said you can’t check me and there’s really nothing they could do about it yeah um so there’s a world where that happens against Michigan State like that that that’s the cards are on the table for that for sure um but you know eventually these guys got to miss I feel like I don’t know if Maui is the place they got to miss but Memphis is a team that shoots extremely well from three and they get to the line like that’s that’s what they want to do and they do both extremely well I think they shot 40 free throws yesterday yeah 29 for 40 now that was also a foul Fest and Hurley was everywhere but um yeah I I think like look Memphis the reason you got take them seriously is the guard play as you mentioned Hunter was the story yesterday the best guard on Memphis has not been Tyrese Hunter the best guard on Memphis has been PJ Haggerty that dude’s unreal he’s insane in the words of John Martin friend of the program who is a memphian right he’s he covers Memphis sports for a living uh Hagerty quote may be one of them ones I’m in on that I think he is one of them ones uh I I think this kid’s incredible I think he’s one of the three best transfers that made their way to a new program this off season now look he’s a technically a sophomore he played like a red shirt year at TCU than his first true year at Tulsa now he’s at Memphis in year three people kind of shrugged him aside he is just a tough bucket getter extraordinaire car you go through his game logs last season at Tulsa he was in the 20s like closer to 30 a game almost every single game that has just instantly translated at Memphis I mean in five games at Memphis 25 points 29 Points 23 points 13 points 22 points and he I get like he’s making threes right now that’s part of why memphis’s uh percentages up a little bit he’s shooting 44% from three on the year after being a 28% three-point shooter last season but he’s low volume from three like his game isn’t shooting a bunch of Threes that are going in right now his game is getting to the free throw line getting fouled all these in between shots just isolation scoring that nobody can handle and I guess my my thing with Michigan state would be I think you guys have backcourt depth and that’s the strength of your team do you have guys that can contain both Hunter and Hagerty at the same time like how how would you handle the matchups on this I would assume you’d want your best perimeter defender on Haggerty which is probably why Tyrese Hunter’s been going off more than normal this season because teams can’t focus in on him the way they used to right you I mean you probably want to put Akins on Hagerty um especially because Hagerty 6’3 Tyrese Hunter 6 foot so and Hager is just the better guard like I think we want aens on him and then whoever you have at the other guard spot whether it be fears Hollman Jace uh put them on Hunter okay I mean the other thing Memphis does they go small their their back cour is six foot 63 64 and they play those three guys the whole game Kobe Rogers is the third guy against Yukon in a 45 minute basketball game they played 40 39 and 37 minutes so number one yes could be some tired legs here but number two car may be a good game for you to play your three lineups maybe maybe less Frankie Fiddler which you’ve been asking for maybe more Jay Richardson Off the Bench who looked great I know there were injury questions he looked great yesterday maybe a little more Trey Hollman as well do you think that bodess well I do um and look I I do think another shift would be good for Michigan State with maybe you know playing the three guard lineup and getting your best players on the floor um and when I say best player that means jaay needs to be on the floor Jay needs to start honestly but I know that probably won’t happen right now but jayon needs to be playing 30 minutes a night I jayon is our best player so um whatever you got to do to get him on the floor and play a lot of minutes you got to make it happen um the one thing I’ll say though too just like just throw a little Caution to the wind here because I I mean I’m I uh I’m part of the The Narrative on this too this team is not deep but like their guys like their guys play Big minutes they’re used to doing this like this is what they do like penny has identified his six guys and he plays those six guys yeah and they and they and they do it well like they didn’t they didn’t wear down yesterday they didn’t wear down yet this season now I know it’s a quick turnaround but we can’t necessarily Bank on guys just wearing down either yeah yeah you’re right I think I like the point like they’re they’re built to do this that’s the expectation they play Big minutes um at the same time like tired legs are tired legs so we’ll see like this this is a game on paper I think it benefits you guys because of how much depth you have you guys are going to be a lot fresher in general with 11 players that come in and out and Memphis is really going in all in on six guys and we’ll see if it works we’ve made it this far on the preview without mentioning the front Court matchup your favorite front Court player in the country Dan dja uh noteworthy here Dane dja still comes off the bench for this Memphis team but I think he has been their best big man in my opinion he had 14 and five rebounds in 22 minutes from Memphis yesterday before uh I thought he fouled out but Kemp says he only had four fouls I thought he fouled out too um but yeah I I I honestly I really like this Memphis front Court um obviously because they have Dane but I think the three bigs that they play kind of kind of all fit together as far as like what they bring like Dane obviously is just like you you’re not g to see a post bag like Dane everywhere it’s special like I know I joke about it but it actually is special like he really just Cooks people on the Block he’s he’s a tough check Cay is just a guy who’s like 611 he rebounds block shots um you know solid player and then Jordan’s like the 674 tweener that just kind of plays hard um and whatever comes to him comes to him so you know this uh and all these guys are old that we’re talking about too by the way like all the guys that I just mentioned like are not only just like seniors um outside of hagy but like they played a lot of basketball um and they seen you know they’ve played a lot of games so very veteran veteran Le roster as well which of your bigs do you trust the most against this front court because I think Coupe actually had good moments yesterday zapala has been really steady kers seems like arguably the most inconsistent of them but by far the highest upside right now who do you trust the most I probably trust zapala the most right now with this with this front Court um I I think some of Ker’s inconsistencies stem from who who his matchups are okay like if he if he’s playing an athletic lengthy front Court I I think sometimes the matchups aren’t really the best for him do you try to match Ker’s minutes with danne’s minutes minutes then today I mean that sounds like food still Dan would see kler and eat him but like he kler could probably give him the same Dan gives Coler right yeah Pro no uh Dan’s so good dog he’s really good yeah he is really good um still not starting for reasons but here we are uh okay can I just say something you can always say something so Memphis is a onepoint underdog in this game and I’m trying to understand why and I I understand depth and tired legs and ISO versus Penny those those seem to be the reasons here and I think there are legitimate reasons in fact they are legitimate enough for me to keep this game out of daily picks like I I want to pick every Maui game I am staying away solely because of like those re mostly Penny ISO but also I don’t trust Tyrese Hunter I I don’t know just what it trying to find reasons why is Memphis an underdog in this game I think Memphis has looked clearly like a better basketball team than Michigan State this year like pretty clearly I I don’t think that’s an exaggeration some of that is shooting definitely some of that is shooting but like basketball is shooting so like like the idea I texted you this the idea that this Michigan State team can be 69th in the country offensively make 20% from three through a month and just be five in one like that hasn’t happened makes no sense to me it it it baffles me like I look back at the last what do you got can I say one little point on there before you get to that sure uh I would like to not I would like our fan base also to not wear that as a badge of honor yeah it’s not good yeah like oh we’re doing all this and we’re five and one that’s not well part of that is we’re playing some scrubs and two that’s not like we need to be able to hit game of basketball simple orange thing has to go on the 10 foot thing especially from behind that line so like again you’re not gonna be good if you shoot that percentage I want to continue giving ISO credit because we talked about preseason we seem to have forgotten about it ISO scheduled this way for a reason this year like this the first time ISO hasn’t scheduled a bazillion monsters in the noncon probably because there are some issues here like you’ve I just to again I I I feel like I’ve been pretty positive on Michigan State in general but like where we’re at right now you’ve had to bench your starting power forward you’ve had to bench your starting point guard you’ve had to I I mean you guys want to bench your starting small forward nobody can make a three and you’re five- one and you avoided Yukon somehow and somehow we’re we’re looking at this game a game where Memphis like has been incredible and everyone thinks Michigan State should feel great and they’re the favorite I’m just I’m a little like what am I missing here like is it just that I’m missing that like Michigan states do to make shots and if they do make shots then then they’re going to be great because I can buy that I guess but like like on paper Memphis makes 48% from three that is 28% more than Michigan State makes on paper Memphis has the better front Court I think they have the better guards like if we were doing Personnel doesn’t Memphis have the two best guards in this game yeah so like I it feels like it’s all coming back like ISO versus Penny and just I looked this up Penny’s 5-2 his last seven one- day turnaround games he hasn’t been bad in these spots so like I don’t know I just I’m I’m struggling to like Square why the confidence for Michigan State in this game yeah I’m not the one to answer that okay all right well like because I’m of the belief that Michigan State’s a team that can’t hit shots and Memphis is a team that can hit shots and Memphis has the better players at most positions and is ISO worth that much in coaching he might be but at the same time players are players and maybe it’s just because usually when you do this exercise like Michigan State ends up winning those basketball games somehow some way um but I mean a lot of every time when I when I watched Memphis and I’ve watched Michigan State this year I’ve been more impressed with Memphis than I have with Michigan State yeah I just don’t think it’s been close and I don’t know they just beat Yukon they they made Yukon look bad yeah I I am not trying to be overly like harsh here again I’m staying I’m staying away from this game because I don’t want to go down this path but like I want to I I think Memphis has looked like a top 15 team in the country Michigan state has looked like the 40th best team in the country I don’t know what I’d do with that like we’re basically we are banking on tired legs ISO over Penny and a team that has made shots to miss shots and a team that has missed shots to make shots that’s the formula and it’s just it’s a formula that when you say it out loud to me doesn’t make a lot of sense so at the same time weird stuff happens in basketball that’s why I’m staying away because I don’t trust Tyrese Hunter to keep doing what he’s doing I’m not sure I will ever trust Penny Hardway ever no matter what the numbers show me I just I guess I’m a little surprised that I think the I’m surprised you’re favored I’ll start there I am surprised you are favored by a point in the sports books uh kenpom has Memphis as a onepoint favorite to win the basketball game I don’t know if I have faith in that at this point um so yeah I got I do have Memphis in this basketball game also I’m sorry I’m distracted I’m looking at the game logs for Tyrese Hunter like everything you said about is what happens like he had 14 to start the year and he followed up with nine then he scored 21 then he had nine then he had 26 in the last game against Yukon so maybe you get a Tyrese hun stinker yeah the the path to me for Michigan State Victory is basically Memphis goes cold Hunter stinker and Michigan State grinds went out again could happen I just I wouldn’t Bank on it based on what we’ve seen from these two teams now it it is also one of those like Michigan states do and Memphis is due for a stinker but it just I don’t know something something in general is fishy to this one for and that’s that’s why I’m staying away I guess we’ll see um at the end of the day this is Tom ISO versus Penny Hardaway for a Maui Invitational final ISO
