[Music] hello everyone and welcome to Blue JS today where you’ve always always have something to say with the tonal Blue Jays I’m your host Nicholas p and I’m your host Adam pedal and today guys we’ve got the latest Blue Jays free agent news coming to you we’ve got some updates here that Alex bregman and Lis Cino those are the newest targets of the Toronto Blue Jays and as well what’s the update on Max freed now that Blake Snell is an LA Dodger getting paid quite a lot of money do the Blue Jays realistically still have a chance and can they afford the new price take of what would be Max freed talking about some of the guys that the Blue Jays are interested in and still interested in because we’ve heard that they’ve been in on Alex bregman and other starting pctures before but the fact that it’s coming up yet again as we approach winter meetings is pretty important Nick 100% man they are clearly serious about if you want to flash over to that MLB trade rumors article right there they’re serious about Alex bregman that’s that’s somebody that is on their short list and I do get it right you know just from a a standpoint of need from the Toronto Blue Jays but what do we really need we need somebody that can hit we we like guys that can play good defense we know Ross Atkins like guys that can play good defense that is somebody that just want to go glove and honestly even though wary Clement manned the bag pretty well getting a third baseman that’s kind of a need too I feel like that is pretty important for these sh Blue Jays so Alex bregman checks a lot of boxes all of that being said though there is something inside of me and I think it’s probably the fact that well we’ve done the whole aging Houston Astro experiment before there is something inside of me that is saying no don’t do it don’t give him all of this money because I don’t know maybe I’m selling short but I feel like Alex bregman is one of those guys where you’re going to look back at the contract and you’re going to go why did we do that yeah I mean well you look at Alex bregman right now just taking a look at his recent stats I mean a very solid hitter I mean career Ops plus of 132 however it’s starting to go down in the recent years you know he’s not like that 2019 mvp2 Alex bregman the batting average has always been pretty consistent in the mid to Upper 200s before 2024 though his on base was exceptional right thing thing he had an on base points over his batting average over 100 that’s a very solid on base percentage but last year there was a bit of a dip his on base percentage dropped down to 315 from 363 and the batting average remained the same and the power stayed the same but that on base showed a little bit of a decline and that was always Alec Alex bregman’s big contributing factor to his game was the on base ability and now entering his age 31 season he looking for a contract you know he he there’s been rumors he’s been looking for a $300 million contract and a $200 million contract but is signing a guy like Alex bregman h31 if he starts to drop off even a little bit more like if he loses the power let’s say if he loses the contact ability and that on base percentage remains out of his game maybe even loses a little bit of the Gold Glove ability then that quickly that contract of $200 million or upper $100 million turns really sour really quick so I I absolutely hear where you’re coming from where this is a little bit scary yeah of course right we we’ve been down this road before we’re living it right now all of that being said though I’ve also been of the mindset that the Toronto Blue Jays are not in a position to be picky and I think that we can both agree that that the very least for the short term Alex bregman is going to make this team better abut right and that’s somebody that I think that we can effectively slot in at the two spot in the lineup and it’s like all right you’re going to be batting you’re going to be batting two for us all year long that’s regardless of even what you do even if you’re terrible you’re going to be batting too for us cuz we’re paying the money and that’s what’s going to happen so I mean that element of things really does excite me and if the Toronto Blue Jays believe that last year was just a bit of a blip because if you can go back to the numbers that you had in 2023 and in 2022 where it was that low 800 Ops it was the great defense it was the high on base percentage that is a player that I can very clearly get behind I do just think that I’m a little triggered at the fact that we’ve gotten a guy that is you know a I think we signed Springer one what he was turning 31 31 so same exact same situation as the Alex bregman thing obviously a different position less taxing bregman playing third basem so maybe that helps him and obviously the fact that Alex bregman has been majority of the career healthy that is also very good um so honestly I could just be being a hater and maybe I’m selling bregman short I do think that there is risk there I also though all that being said it’s a risk that the Blue Jays are kind of forced to take to go out and get somebody just hopefully not for 200 plus million dollar I think that’s all I’m trying to say don’t pay that much money 200’s a little bit too much for me but again you bring up a point that I want to double down on is the fact that we kind of need him right now like sure will he eventually decline if you sign him for a six-year deal absolutely there’s no way that this guy is going to be this good into his age 36 37 season but when you look at the Blue Jays contract situation right now you look Beyond 2026 the only guys on the books for the Blue Jays is yel Rodriguez for dirt cheap and Jose varos who’s a fairly good signing it has a player opt out so hell it could be only one guy on the books with the Toronto Blue Jays so you know when we’re comparing them very lightly to a George Springer kind of deal how we saw how sour that turned at least in this reality at least for the time being it wouldn’t hurt you to have one bad contract on the books no I get it I get it right and again in the short term Alex bregman is going to help this team he’s probably going to be a top player for us if he was to come here next year um so yeah I could just be being a hater uh I’d say that just do your contract negotiations Stingily if that’s I’m I’m going to claim that as being a word we’re going to say be stingy when it comes to bregman I still want him here and I’m still be excited if we got him uh but let’s not give him the 250 that he’s asking for yeah I could see this being honestly because he’s asking for way too much I could see this being a player opt out included or Club opt out included somewhere in this or Mutual option kind of thing because it’s like no one’s going to be seeing on the same page I get you I get you man now moving over to Louis srino this one was some some a name that we hadn’t heard yet we’ve heard Alex Alex bregman a couple times Lou sevino is new seino is an interesting one he is also going to be turning 31 now his career is is effectively as much as a roller coaster as you can get he’s had incredible years he’s had terrible years he’s had a year that he didn’t play CU of injury he’s had you know stuff going on with cheating allegations uh like it’s just it really is all over the map now last year he was pretty good he pitched 182 Innings he had a high three erra you know he won more games than he lost across the board he was good this for me is somebody that I can absolutely get behind as more of a nice Dart throw I don’t say a full Dart throw cuz I think that you you know if you sign Louis saen you’re expecting to get something good but it is still an element of a dart throw it really does depend on how much money he’s going to be looking for cuz if he wants you know 20 odd million dollars a year that’s something that I don’t think that tonal Blue Jays can be doing yeah I mean yeah he’s he’s a complimentary guy to give you a little bit of depth and I and I do agree the Blue Jays need depth you might be thinking that’s crazy when you’ve got you know Kevin Gosman Chris Basset Jose BOS and Alex monoa maybe coming uh maybe coming back back and then you got um you know yel Rodriguez that we signed for brown Francis who had a breakout year but I still truly believe that the Blue Jays need a little bit of depth now spot rck has him projected at $ 21.4 million and if that was the case everybody four years years I am not going to be signing this type of deal I would much rather put that money into somebody like a Max freed which we’re just about to talk about guys because he’s only going to cost maybe a little bit more aav for a guy who know I know is going to be very well Max freed is like a sure thing in my that’s that’s as close as a sure thing as you can get in MLB like this guy is just like Captain consistency you know Lis srino is the complete opposite right like this is as sure as you can get to complete variable like you know just roll the dice and hope and sometimes you were going to get somebody who’s incredible basball and then other times he’s just going to be too injured I actually don’t see anyone paying that amount of money for Louis srino just because of the injury history I mean yes this past year he pitched 182 Innings the season prior it was 81 the season before that it was 102 then it was six in 2021 and then he missed all of 2020 I just don’t see anybody with that level of injury history giving this guy a fouryear close to 100 million deal I think spot rack’s overval it’s not like he had exceptional I mean look 3.91 is a very solid middle of the rotation guy that on a competitive team like I’m locking down and I’m very happy with but that doesn’t cost I mean it could cost you 21 million but I think you need to see that over a course of more years if if I think about it in terms of like an investment thing it’s like I just if I was a team I would be very i’ just be very unsure of myself if I’m writing out the check for 100 million for a guy that’s you know been completely all over the place and continues to get hurt now Max freed he’s going to cost a lot more than Louis srino and it it is warranted right this is somebody who in the eight years that he spent with Atlanta has been one of the best pitchers in baseball he’s got a 3. what 07 ER in that time frame 24 war that he is racked up over there in Atlanta he’s going to be 31 years old I believe coming into next year this is like I said Captain consistency now he is licking his chops because Blake snail just signed a deal 5 years 182 million average annual value is something like you know 36 odd million it’s a lot of godamn money now the Dodgers are being smart and they’re deferring the hell out of it and they’re doing their whole Dodger thing but point being it’s a lot it is Max freed has been or I don’t even know if it’s arguable I would say has been better than Blake Snell in the course of his career and has been better than Blake Snell in the last five years and is a year younger than Blake Snell yeah because I mean if you’re looking at just e and you’re looking at just overall consistency then yeah you could say Max freed is a little bit better he has a 307 erra versus his 319 whereas Blake Snell like I mean the whip is much better for Blake Snell Blake Snell’s Highs are super high I mean he is the alltime strikeout per nine leader of literally all time which is a valuable statistic which is absolutely valuable you know then there’s people arguing that you know walks could be a bit of a factor but the point is like no matter what he does he gets the job done so if Blake Snell’s going to get that type of money and a lot of people thought it was an overpay well if Max freed was projected to get around the same if not a little bit more than a Blake Snell then we’re looking at a contract if it’s not 182 million it’s going to be 190 195 maybe even 200 if the bidding war gets up there now we’ve heard that Yankees Red Sox Orioles were all in on Blake snail and the next best Lefty starting pitcher in the game is Max freed right so if they’re all going to be jumping ship over to a Max freed then that you could see that bidding war get up there quite a lot and is that something that the Blue Jays are willing to do well apparently they are I mean it it’s been sounding like they’re very interested in a Max freed and I do get it like this is somebody this is a Quality quality arm are they willing to spend all that much money I mean they’ve never done that before uh they have said they are going to be very aggressive you’re right they’ve never spent that never spent that amount like if Max freed was to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays he would the contract’s going to be more than George frer because even if let’s just say for instance him and Blake Snell got the exact same average annual value let’s just say that you you you value them exactly the same and again Max fre coming off of a great year well he’s going to get an additional year because he’s one year younger than than Blake sell right if we’re assuming that’s going to be the case so you’re talk you’re adding on $36 million to the 182 there this is somebody that’s going to get paid like $210 million I think I think he’s worth it and I think that you know to your argument about how well guys are going to start falling off the books that is especially true with the starting pitchers yes you have Jose Brios locked up for a period time but there’s a a player opt out in there at some point right so he could he could decide to leave you got Chris Basset going after this year you got Kevin Gosman going after next year so if you want to have a rotation where it’s like okay there’s there’s no significant fallof Max freed is definitely somebody that can help you with that and hopefully you’ll never be in a place where you’re completely desolate for pitchers but it is going to cost you a pretty penny it’s going to help them in many ways more than one too I mean once you added Max free now you’re looking at a rotation where bow and Francis is your fifth pitcher that’s disgusting that assuming he continues what he doing assuming he continues like that’s that’s a gross fifth pitcher then you move yel to the bullpen and we’ve been talking time and time again about how much innings we need to get in this offseason just from free agents like in trades how many innings we need to collect to go and fill out that Bullpen well iing AR Rodriguez adds about 100 Innings right right because you’re looking at a long man in that Bullpen and the Blue Jays are probably going to have him pitch quite a bit in that type of role so that kind of solves like a a reliever and a half for you right there by adding in a Max fre right so you go and it never hurts to add more starting pitching now I know we need more Bullpen we need the you know the big bats in the lineup but I think adding a Max free doesn’t limit you to that as well well okay let me let’s finish off this podcast then by I guess answering the question here if they go out and they get a Max freed and now that we have an idea as to how much he’s going to get paid it’s going to be a lot right is there any reality where they also go and add a bat because I agree that yeah getting Max freed would be phenomenal I’d be over the moon about that I trust the player I really really do I trust the player I think it’d be money well spent but does that mean that because we’re investing $35 million a year in Max freed that Alex bregman or that Pete Alonzo or that Willie adamus is now off look at somebody like a santon d which is kind of that next tier down in terms of payment or maybe even they look at a Tas Ganz I saw an article today that was like now that black uh Blake Snell is signed with the Dodgers that like now you know Taos gandz where’s the money for Taos Hernandez well we know the Dodgers have a lot of money so they don’t really care but you know you be looking at some other tier players to go and fill out that lineup and yeah sure it’s not going to be as sexy but you know that’s if that’s the direction we’re going to have to go in we got it because I said this in early in the offseason go get anybody who’s willing to come and play in Toronto because we have so many obstacles we have to overcome with our win loss record with playing in Canada and a whole new country and you know not having a window beyond the next two years go get anybody to help this team and just be thankful that they signed here well it does kind of seem like that is the way that they
