final score Kentucky 90 Gonzaga 89 in overtime in Tory Black’s Hometown UK trailed by as many as as 18 they were without Lamont Butler from the jump lost kresa after 27 minutes on the court regardless they were able to force OT and then they won it so Mark Pope’s Wildcats are now eight- one with wins over Gonzaga Duke lone loss at Clemson by four it appears they’re going to be ranked second in the AP poll on Monday think because they do have the law I’m not saying they shouldn’t be right that’s right let the table for our listeners in the same week of time they lost at Clemson competitive game they beat Gonzaga they go one and one maybe you’re saying they deserve to be maybe they still will be to it’s very intriguing to see where Kentucky gets because right now I’ll tell you this a big picture we’re going break this down Kentucky fans are over the moon over how they won this game and I think most of them probably believe and this is not I I point this out as not to take a direct shot because it’s not a shot it’s just a statement a fact these kind of games and these kind of scenarios they were not winning with John calip Perry now you don’t want to be down by 16 at the at the break and all that kind of stuff but the adjustments that Pope made I think for as big as the win is it’s more how they got it in the fact that they are in a situation now where they have confidence that this can happen so anyway we can get to more that in just a second you think Kentucky will be number two on Monday no I appreciate you correcting me I had placed the Clemson loss at a different point in time without properly pointing out AP voters tend to just look at a snapshot of the week and they move you up and they move you down I think you could reasonably have Kentucky at number two on Monday let me say that um they were number four I think in the AP poll this week yeah Auburn lost um didn’t I did Marette lost Marquette did lose and then Mar we’re getting to you Marquette don’t worry and a lot of a lot of top teams have taken some Els here that’s right so listen I think Kentucky will in the top five I know I will have him in the top five and regardless of whether it’s two or five like Kentucky starting from nothing when Mark Pope takes over this job from John calip Perry there’s nobody playing for Mark Pope right now who played for John caliper last season I’ve referenced this before if you take any notable team uh that took seven or more transfers last season they all none of them were good except NC State got good and made the final four or got hot and made the final four but none of them were good enough to get an at llarge bid to the NCAA tournament that that’s a factual way to put it here’s Kentucky right now their top nine scorers are first year transfers in the program and they look great let me ask you this question and you tell me if I’m being hyperbolic okay is is this the answer to the question what happens when you give a really smart modern basketball mine incredible name image and likeness resources this is what happens or hey we’re one month into it let’s not let’s not get too crazy more the latter than the former and I even still think listen the roster they brought in um is a quality roster but I actually think it was not the best roster money could buy I think Pope and his staff were very particular and specific about who they were going after I mean consider the fact that Amari Williams was the first commit uh trivia time where did he play last season audience it was Drexel so um it is a really good roster with very intentional pieces and it you know they’re gonna they’re going to take some some LS there’s going to be some nights where they’re not as as well jelled and again they were down as much as 18 in this one in fact being down 16 at the half and winning the game tied the program record for best come from behind win at the half but everyone knows the LSU game in in ‘ 93 or 94 whatever they were down by like 31 and they came back and won that game at LSU that’s by far the biggest comeback in in program history but it w I tell you watching the first half Gonzaga was absolutely rolling and it l and it looked to be as though okay gonzaga’s got it’s got the dudes Zach’s got dudes they’re a top five team Mark F again is going to have an offense and an offensive team which by the way could still be the case however it it did not sustain over the course of this game uh that is capable of making a final four and competing for a national championship then you get this just array of reliability from from Kentucky consider this you had five players in double figures in this game that’s the fourth time so far this season ky’s had at least five guys get to 10 points or more uh Andrew Carr who hit the who hit the bucket with less than a minute to go to get this game tied and basically help send it to overtime he had 19 Jackson Robinson who was I think the most valuable player on the floor in this game certainly for Kentucky he had 18 points five assists uh in the game o had 13 Amari Williams had 12 Garrison had 10 and they gave him what I thought was a weak Tech but that’s beside the point there Kentucky got 48 points in the paint and it was able to really assert a presence there that I I I wasn’t sure it was going to be able to against Gonzaga but doing this with no Lamont Butler Kirk caresa leaves the game with uh eight and change ago Kentucky has subsequently announced that he’s got to have surgery on his foot he is out indefinitely so let’s I mean surgery on the foot he’s sitting until we hit 2025 minimally hopefully it won’t be too too long but um for them to do that with no Butler and then no C late was I thought incredible eek goes for 28 points 11 boards nard had 13 points 10 assists Gonzaga did go cold there’s a weird Trend at play here GP which I’m not sure if you’re aware of or not so I’m aware of everything you are okay what am I gonna say I think what you were about to say was thatw of everything let’s hear it Kansas losing twice in the same basketball week as the number one team in the country to unranked te it’s the fifth time it’s ever happened in the history of the AP poll according to Jared Bon who invented research I was wrong all right so invented research Kentucky in this in this ball game holds Gonzaga to six of 27 from three-point range that’s 22.2% Kentucky on the year refresh this right now it’s three-point defense which is which has some variance to it no doubt about it but at a certain point your sche you trust that stat that that Strat just blindly do you go if somebody has a good threo field threo defensive field goal percentage do you automatically say they must be good at that broadly speaking data suggests that there is a lot of luck involved I happen to believe this is one of those stats where you can actually dig in and there are there is some meeting behind it um that being said On Any Given game you will be potentially vulnerable to aggression to the mean there Kentucky is has the sixth best in the country right now 25.3% threo percentage defense but teams are just shooting poorly it was the sixth time this season that a team did not hit 25% from Beyond The Arc against Kentucky that’s obviously having an impact on their ability to win there and another huge stat here uh credit to the entire world because I I guess ESPN First put it up there but um everyone uh ran with that after Gonzaga had won 175 games in a row when it was up by at least 10 at the half 175 of them did not get it closed out here uh for Kentucky to be two and 0 I know I’m going long on your your question GP but like the fact that Mark Pope has gone two and 0 against top 10 teams so far this season they come back in this game and match statistically the biggest halftime deficit in program history at 16 points to get a win uh they do it with one guy after another coming up but to me it was Carr and Jackson Robinson as much as anyone else I mean what a freaking development for Kentucky this this is the kind of win where they’ll probably tap into this and it will benefit them in some way somehow on the road in the SEC couple because this going to be a gauntlet of the league they’re going to take losses in in the conference but uh this every Kentucky fan was taking eight- one through nine games no doubt about it and uh and to me it was more about Kentucky coming back and ripping it away than Gonzaga blowing it but you know you got to have some from column A and some from column B how about this just as we’re talking through it I don’t know where Kentucky will be ranked in the AP pull on Monday I think we’ve established that but but had they just won at Clemson earlier in the week and they were in the game they would really be number one in the country number one but you but they but they lost it and that’s that’s fine it was a competitive game and for them by the way think about that son to Seattle same week lot of travel you take the split no matter what those are those are two tournament teams two single digit seeds no shame in it yeah oh it’s a great week um wonderful and like sometimes when it comes to this type of stuff there’s a be careful what you wish for thing like pit fans with Jamie Dixon duster song by the way what you wish for continue Kentucky fans weren’t necessarily wishing for Mark Pope but they were wishing for something different they wanted something new they wanted something fresh to attach to and they got it and it is going I think better than anyone could have reasonably expected he very quickly Mark Pope came in and like won the hearts of the fan base like he won that over really quickly and then he did enough in recruiting to obviously build a competent team but what’s interesting here is Uki fans are almost looking at this from a totally different perspective what if we said for 15 years about Kentucky did we ever say they’re better than the some of their parts geeeez we we we always look at 11 12 and 14 15 and even and even then you you would even then like the parts were amazing like they had the best Parts INC they had the best parts Part the parts have made like three billion dollars in contract they always had so many parts and for to the extent you would ever get happy it’d be like man this is going the way it should have gone given that we have Anthony Davis and and everybody else right and then when it didn’t go well you’d be like why is this why do we not why do we have all these five stars and this now Kentucky fans get to enjoy what other programs get to enjoy sometimes which is hey we don’t have the best roster we don’t have the most NBA players how many NBA players do they have but we’re great we might not have any lottery picks but we’ve got a great college basketball team there’s been so many times where Kentucky had all the lottery picks but for whatever reason not a great team now they might not have the lottery picks but they got the great team and just from you know looking at it from a distance it seems that they’re having a good time with it uh let’s talk Gonzaga real quick uh Gonzaga seven- two uh notable wins Baylor Arizona State damn right qualifies at this point at San Diego State we’ll see if the Indiana win winds up having some value there but they won over the hooers at Battle for lannis they’ve got the OT loss to West Virginia and then they lose here 90 to8 9 in in overtime um unusual for Gonzaga to blow a game like this uh you know EK is something else Caleb battle has his moments there but you know Michael aay in this kind of game he only had four points you know you expect more from him in this kind of spot certainly what they’re they’re going to ask from him overall uh I also thought I don’t know watching the game credits to some of what Kentucky was doing pop pop through a few different wrinkles and there’s no doubt about that they they actually um I don’t know if it was literally like what happens at halftime in these games is teams going into locker rooms player going in the locker room players amongst themselves coaching staff is normally in the in the coach’s locker room and that can last anywhere from 30 seconds to eight minutes and they’re talking over okay what do we see what do we want to tell the guys and maybe everything that Kentucky needed to do happened um in that halftime or maybe they were prepped for it and and were ready to adjust it was it was really impressive by Kentucky staff to do that uh but I was surprised at Gonzaga not driving in the lane and in the gear that I would have expected it to and I think when F and his staff go over and watch this tape they’re going to have regrets over some of the three-point shots I thought were actually bad shot selections they should be they should be launching and they and they will but I actually thought um in the flow in the rhythm of the second half they were they were not good looks there and then a lack of ingression on the uh interior there what were your quick takeaways on uh gu before we get to the rest of the weekend well first I think it’s important to point out though they do have two losses in games they were favored to win they still have zero losses in regulation it’s true I mean by Def by definition they are one team that did this like two three I was Dayton was Dayton or San Diego State it was the it was the year that we didn’t have the tournament it was somebody regulation they run defeated Den zaga could be the next yeah I so it’s not ideal like it’s never good to lose games you’re not supposed to lose like let’s keep it simple and obvious but they are quite literally one shot or one stop in regulation away from being undefeated and ranked number one in the country right now with they got top five computer numbers top two offense I you know they’ve bombed Baylor to open the season um you know I I don’t know how good San Diego State Indiana those schools are but I’m not worried about Gonzaga like they they’ll get through this non- league schedule whatever however they do it and then they’ll get to the league and they’ll run through that and then they’ll be in the sweet 16 for the 10th straight year and you know and we’ll wonder if this is the year they can go win at all like I I know this story I’ve seen it before
