have briefly appeared on a sleepers video so everybody say hello to Riley Davis’s son this is most certainly not a creative attempt at distracting us from North Carolina’s 15-point loss at home to Alabama last night Riley was in the building I believe for this one Alabama’s really good North Car has a lot of questions I think we knew both of those coming in and I think that was reinforced last night uh Theo and Riley what did you see yeah well it’s funny you mentioned it’s his second appearance on the channel the last time he was on a videoos when we were talking about Jasper Johnson which actually didn’t work out for UNC or Bama um but interesting enough there there are ties anytime he comes on the show but no this this game like let me just give you a peek behind the curtain being in the building G going through warm-ups uh I went down the court I was talking to the Alabama Sid Steven Gonzalez who I believe is a fan of the show he’s helped us out he helped us get Grant Nelson for the drafton great dude and as we’re talking I see literally Alabama’s entire team just throwing down windmill dunks in the layup line and that was my first bad Omen you contrast that to Carolina where you have all these small guards and no one’s throwing down Sick dunks in the warm-up line and uh yeah that’s about summarizes how the the night went it was I don’t know man I I thought Carolina’s effort and their defense in the first 8 to 10 minutes looked a lot better they were playing more connected there weren’t as many breakdowns and miscommunications but on the other end they were just throwing up bricks it’s like they’d force a Miss get the ball back and then then brick a shot smoke a layup blow a transition opportunity and then eventually Alabama started hitting shots I mean Carolina I I still think Carolina’s defense is really bad needs a lot of work the they struggle to con contain dribble penetration they struggle guarding ball screens none of the big men on the roster are really providing any sort of Rim protection like it just seems like it’s a layup line at various points in the game whenever an Alabama player gets into the lane what’s beyond that too it’s like these these breakdowns when when guards or perimeter players are getting into the lane or there’s miscommunications on off ball screens it leads to wide open threes whether that was Houston mlti whose first game of the year hits two threes in the corner two for two Aiden Holloway repeatedly got open he went five for eight he’s a Charlotte native maybe should have been a a cue to me that he had a little bit of you know um a little bit of Hometown cooking on his mind like you didn’t recruit me all right well here’s what I can do it it was just a a pretty much a disaster for UNC really starting at the 12 minute Mark in the first half yeah um how how noticeable was that shift in person it pretty noticeable like once Alabama I think L Ian Jackson made things happen I think Ian it’s time for I don’t know who needs to sit in the starting lineup but I’m kind of convinced Ian Jackson needs to go in um it’s not a bit it’s genuine but it’s my favorite every time we talk Carolina Riley’s like this bench guy has to start and the answer like you got Drake Powell in this game it led to nothing and see Jackson turn yeah that’s a fair that’s a fair critique Greg I’m grasping at straws here but like like what do you are you gonna start zero bigs are you play Ian Jackson at Center I mean what would do you think that would be better than watching these bigs give up open shots at the rim and not provide any blocks and not provide any resistance when you have guys just dunking on you no I don’t I I mean I hear you I just it’s a Personnel issue we know that I don’t know I’m happy Ian played well in this game he seemed like the only guy on the team that uh just wasn’t n willing to submit to like hey RJ gets to Chuck up whatever he wants every possession like say what we want I really like Seth rimble I think he’s been fantastic this year Seth also really like mentally allows himself to slide in and just like wait for RJ to decide if RJ’s gonna do something or not like I I would like Seth to put his fingerprints all over games earlier than this um I don’t know what was up with Kau maybe you’ll have some answers for me from seeing it in person he looks checked out to me at least last night he was kad’s been really struggling since Maui I mean you go back I think he had five turnovers in the first half against Dayton um played better in the second half against Michigan State was terrible against Auburn like every game it’s just it’s mind numbing turnovers it’s dribbling off his foot it’s I mean going into the lane without much of a plan and driving into bigger Defenders finished with one point I think four assist four turnovers I mean I I’m glad he only played 25 minutes Hu gave him a shorter Leist leash and it was like well Ian is cooking so if you’re going to be if you’re going to be turning the ball over and I mean he airball a three like we have a 65 guard who’s getting buckets and beyond that Ian I don’t know like you you mentioned this there there’s Personnel issues I’m not crazy about the defensive scheme at the same time I think part of the defensive scheme breaking down is because of the personel issues there’s only so much you can do with whether you’re playing like a whether you’re playing drop coverage whether you’re playing a more like flat ball screen coverage where you have the big closer up to the the U like not quite a hedge but somewhere in between it all can get exposed if you don’t have good defensive bigs so I I I totally acknowledge that and I don’t like brushing it off as like oh they didn’t have enough energy they didn’t have enough fire like sometimes that plays into it but generally speaking I think execution scheme Personnel that’s way more important than quote unquote the guys didn’t want it enough but with with that being said like Ian Jackson was the only one who I felt confident in in the second half like he was the one who was responsible he who helped Carolina cut the deficit a couple times to 10 and then Alabama would go on like a 60 run after that um but even late in the game like taian Claude had an and one on a putback and Ian Jackson was the only one who was like cheering and gassing him up and celebrating like it looked like oh shoot Ian Jackson still thinks we can come back and win this game and you can combine that with him giving you 23 points Off the Bench with him like being the only guard who has legit he’s at like a legit 65 Frame that’s the truly the one positive I took from this game was like okay we got a we got a player here in Ian Jackson yeah it’s a real positive I think uh Ian at least last night I felt like he played with like an audacity to him which I like and it speaks to a broader issue I think this North Carolina team is addressing and learning how to deal with on the fly right now tell me if you if you think this is a fair characterization of what you saw in person um I I have seen this with a couple Joan Howard teams through the years I’m sure it’s happened other places around the country nationally when you have for lack of a better word a bad basketball team or a struggling basketball team that has some really good individual pieces when it starts to settle in that oh my God we’re not going to be as good as our individual pieces are it hits everybody like a wave like a just a tornado and I the the number one example I can give this of my team recently was the the Kobe buffkin jet Howard Hunter Dickinson team that team had three awesome basketball players and it had zero success as a whole because there were just too many issues and from game one like those guys approached games in November of like oh we can beat anybody and then by Midway through December it was like oh we can lose to anybody and then by the end of the year it was like oh we’re going to lose we’re not good enough and you just saw completely different versions of the good players to me that’s kind of what I think is happening right now to RJ and Elliott like those guys are realizing there is no Harrison Ingram there is no Armando Bott we don’t have the Personnel we need the good players that are coming in our freshman that uh quite frankly Ian is still pretty redundant to like an RJ Davis he’s not giving you anything different than what RJ wants to give you so it’s one of those things like I think to to speak to Ian playing well to my eye it’s like he’s so young he doesn’t have those thoughts creep in he’s just like I need my minutes I gotta earn [ __ ] I am gonna clack I’m gonna play hard blah blah blah whereas the Vets are looking around like well this sucks we’re actually pretty bad and I don’t know what I can do about it is that a fair interpretation to this I I think that’s pretty spot on Greg like it’s it’s tough for me to feel like is a fix because you can’t just go back and add front Court players you can’t like I mean Drake pal I think Drake pal has some moments I think he’s a really good Defender most importantly he’s not mixing missing box outs he’s not turning the ball over like Jaylen Withers does when he starts at the four Withers only played 11 minutes this game I thought that was a wise decision on Hubert’s part um I mean he had a brutal sequence where he bricked a shot missed the box out and had a really bad turnover when on the break when Ian Jackson was leaking out for probably would have would have been two points um yeah so it’s like but even like we talked about in the preview Drake is more of a two3 than he is a 3-4 like there’s still going to be some shortcomings there even if he plays like a lottery pick because he’s he’s playing out of position um yeah I I mean Jaylen Washington’s playing on an ex extremely short leash right now he gave you 12 minutes last night um it’s tough to see him realizing his potential if he’s not able to play through mistakes and even with that like he he took three threes last night all open or lightly contested missed all three of them and that’s supposed to be his appeal is his he’s he can stretch the floor a little bit I think Luben is luan’s your best offensive big but he was the one who gets picked on the most in ball screen defense um he’s like that he was the one who it looked like Alabama was just getting uncontested shots at The Rim um this Alabama team is good they I don’t think they’re I don’t think they’re as good as Carolina made them look well I shouldn’t say it that way I think it’s more of a reflection of how disjointed Carolina is the roster imbalance and their poor defense but this Alabama team is like in my opinion clearly top 10 um I love I I’m a big fan of Daren Reed he had one of the most athletic dunks I’ve seen all year where he levitated in the air cocked it back on an alleyoop and it was like this was right after I think an Ian Jackson bucket cut the lead to 10 and they got out in the open they got out on the open court and I swear he just levitated and hung there for three seconds before throwing the dunk down um yeah I mean the GU guards are good learon philon was all over this game even if the box score doesn’t show him as the leading score he was the one who felt like he he lived in the paint um and Aiden Holloway is knockdown shooter who’s probably going to step right into the the void that Latrell writel left yeah yeah they are really good I uh I was gonna do a little bit here where I give you like a a doomsday thing and then I give you like a positive spin my positive spin was just I think Alabama’s awesome um I I think you know I’m a very over reactionary person as you know especially when I’m doing the job that is content uh I I I actually think people have overreacted a little too much to Alabama from just sort of the consensus coming into this game like we all entered this season saying Alabama was either 1A or 1B most people had Kansas 1A Alabama 1B but it was like very clear like they are one of the two best teams in the country we would not be surprised at all if they’re the best team in the country and then they had like a couple slow shooting games in the noncon and lost in macki Arena in a game they were up six in the second half before a role player who has two points in three weeks scored nine unanswered like oh no CJ Cox did something insane and they lost and now everybody jumped off the Bama train and was like ah Mark Sears benched himself they’re not themselves like no this Team rocks this team is themselves and they had some injuries but Sears is back to who he’s supposed to be phon incredible Grant Nelson’s been great this year like you’re fourth and fifth options any given night for Alabama are better than any other team’s fourth and fifth options in the country outside of maybe Duke like we’re sitting here like Cliff am morier is like an afterthought on this team and Cliff’s one of the best bigs in the country even if he hasn’t played like it so Personnel wise I I don’t think we should be disappointed like I just really came away from this really impressed with who Alabama is here’s the reason for doomsday spiraling scaredness uh since Co six Seas tell me this don’t tell me this six seasons since Co Riley uh or maybe one before Co maybe since 2019 North Carolina has lost three straight games two previous Seasons those would be the two seasons you missed the NCA tournament you did not lose three games in a row any of the years that North Carolina made the NCA tournament this team feels bubbly at best right now is that fair is very fair I had to listen to Alabama fans yell Roll Tide and Alabama of some sort of chant as the Carolina fans were leaving it’s uh program needs some juice something’s got to change it’s very fortunate you got the dayt and win I mean you earned the Dayton win but good Lord if you were sitting here three and five after Dayton staring Florida and UCLA in a week like we are more doomsday than we are um quickly RJ Davis is he going to fix himself the hesitation speaks volumes I I mean I want to have faith but like there’s so much attention being paid to him he just looked uncomfortable last night like shooting threes off the dribble just everything looks Rush right now um I mean thankfully he gets Georgia Tech on Saturday who’s terrible but it’s got to haveen ASAP it justs it looks like he’s taking shots because he knows he needs to I don’t remember that happening much last year like last year everything he got felt within the flow of what the team was doing this year it’s like we have to get it to our star and he has to shoot a step back three because nobody else
