[Music] Washington Capitals Captain Alex oetkin briefly returned to the ice on Saturday as he recovered from a fractured left fibula the injury sustained during a collision in a game against the Utah Hockey Club on November 18th has kept the star forward sidelined but his progress is becoming more apparent during Saturday’s practice oet participated in a morning skate Dawning a no contact Jersey while working out with the team skills coach this marked a significant step in his rehab which has already included skating in full gear earlier in the week and even shooting pucks with teammate Nicholas Backstrom who is also sidelined on a long-term leave of absence it’s another step said capitals coach Spencer carbury I wouldn’t start to put targets or set projected dates of turn but him being in the morning skate with other players around is the next step cary’s comments indicate that while oetkin is progressing there’s still no concrete timeline for his return to complete action when oetkin first sustained the injury the capitals announced a 4 to six we recovery window which would see him Miss anywhere from 13 to 19 games the team’s timeline points to a possible return between December 19th and January 2nd which includes K home games on December 20th and January 2nd with a holiday break between December 24th and 27th while the injury happened in a November 18th win against the Utah Hockey Club it wasn’t until 3 days later on November 21st that oetkin fractured fibula diagnosis was confirmed the injury occurred after a legon leg collision with Utah defenseman Jack McBain caused oetkin to limp off off the ice although he briefly returned to the bench but didn’t finish the game ultimately leading to the diagnosis since the injury the capitals have fared relatively well in egin’s absence the team has gone 821 with contributions from other players who have stepped up in his place as of Saturday the capitals led the Eastern Conference and were just one point behind the league leader before his injury o can had scored 15 goals in 18 games including two in the game where he was hurt this brought his career total to 868 goals which puts him second all time in NHL history he is just 27 goals behind Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals which has stood since 1999 as for egin’s potential return it’s still unclear whether he will rejoin the capitals on their two game road trip to Dallas and Chicago on December 16th and 17th the team will continue to monitor his progress over the next few weeks but one thing is sure oetkin is determined to get back on the ice and continue his quest to break Gretzky’s long-standing goal record if oetkin doesn’t break the record this season he still has another year remaining on his contract giving him more time to pursue the historic Mark given his Relentless work at EIC and the capital success despite his absence the hockey world will watch closely for egin’s eventual return and pursuit of History
