that are flying around and then over the weekend we had some actual breaking news for the Philadelphia philes when they made their tender or non-tender however you want to look at it agreements ahead of the arbitration process deadline so uh we’ve gotten into a good amount of stuff we know Austin Haye is no longer with the team we know Garrett stub’s back with the team and we’ve evaluated some Bullpen arms in between but there’s something that I definitely wanted to get into today because Buster only is a guy who is very connected around baseball I think that goes without saying if you know Buster only or any of his work and if you like baseball you probably know Buster only he’s connected and he had some very interesting things to say in a radio hit about the Philadelphia philes we’re going to talk about that uh also a new name is potentially on the trade block for the Philadelphia Phillies and it’s a name that we’ve heard before in these types of conversations I’ll tell you who that is and what my thoughts are and what potential return could be and break all that down the same way we did with the Alec fo rumors and we’re going to round out the bullpen evaluations there’s two more guys and they’re kind of like those um there’s not too much to say about either of them so we’re going to combine the two together in Colby Allard and Tanner Banks but let’s start with this Buster only thing because this is the most exciting report that we’ve heard about the Philadelphia Phillies this offseason so far at least in my opinion now you may be very excited about the Alec bom is being shopped and there are suitors around baseball that are interested in acquiring Alec bow and what could that look like but for me I’m I like more when my team acquires Talent without having to give it up right so that means signing in free agency that means adding players and I gotta read you this quote from Buster only he did a radio hit uh here in Philly and he was asked about what a bold prediction for the Philadelphia Phillies off season would be and he said that they’re gonna get a star that’s what he said and he he brought up that he’s talked to other teams and other teams around the league and Executives have this feeling that the Philadelphia Phillies are going to get a star uh and the term that he used was world series tilt uh a player that is going to change this player is going to change the Philadelphia Phillies chances of winning the World Series so we’re not talking about an arm in the bullpen like I don’t think Jeff Hoffman counts as that and that wouldn’t be like bringing in a new star that would be resigning a bullpen pitcher from last year I don’t think Carlos EST is like I we’re not looking at Bullpen pitchers uh there were a couple of names of Buster only uh brought up and he was bringing up Alex bregman Juan stto Garrett crochet those guys that you know the names they had great Seasons or they’ve had great seasons in the past in terms of Alex fragman who didn’t have his best year this past year but uh those are big- time names and Buster only is hugely hugely confident it sounds like that the Philadelphia Phillies are going to go out and acquire a star so where are we at right now on that like how realistic of a possibility is that you read through some of these quotes for Buster only and it’s just like oh it’s not just him saying it he’s talking to teams all the time other executives are saying it uh he’s getting the sense just from around the league in general everyone feels like the Philadelphia Phillies are to use the term from Brett Brown an Old Coach and interim GM of the 76ers in the later stages of the process uh they’re star hunting I gota say with the boss that the star hunting there you go I think I I got it shout out to Brett Brown uh but bottom line is this I did not expect this from the Philadelphia Phillies when I heard that the Phillies were going to be like aggressive when Dave dumbrowski brought up that like we’re gonna look to do some stuff basically was his uh type of tone when he was doing his endof year availability I was thinking it was okay well maybe they trade Brandon Marsh and then maybe they bring in this other guy who’s like a 250 260 hitter that you put out there just for the sake of switching it up maybe you have a different backup catcher maybe you do something different in the back end of the bullpen uh but these little like end of the roster changes and tweaks I thought were going to be what they were going to do to change things around and then John Middleton said hey I got no issue with payroll increasing again I want to win okay cool appreciate that Mr owner that’s what you want to hear from the guy that’s shelling out the paychecks for uh this team in this organization so that’s a good sign but now you hear this from Buster only and I don’t know how any of those guys would not be on the table for the Philadelphia Phillies I mean you could go out and look to acquire we we talked about let’s look at G crochet first we talked about how the Phillies could potentially need starting pitching more than it seems right now with Ranger Suarez heading into the final year of a deal and with no fifth starter truly and Andrew payer not ready for a full season’s work CL coming off that Tommy John surgery and having never pitched at the major league level before uh you got some potential long-term holes in the rotation bringing in a guy to fill that this year just making that rotation overpowered could be a way for the Philadelphia philes to have a World Series tilt type of addition uh so that holds water for sure we broke up that down a whole episode you scroll down the feed a little bit and look for the one talking about starting pitching I give my thoughts on why that could be a viable not not crochet specifically but adding a highlevel starting pitcher uh bregman we already broke down how if the Philadelphia Phillies are indeed going to trade Alec b or looking to trade Alec B the interest is there with breckman I’ve got that from a very reliable source inside baseball that the Philadelphia Phillies have bonified interest in Alex BR it doesn’t mean that they’re like we need him he’s the guy that we have to go get but the whole what if they bring in dragman it isn’t a what if it’s a they are interested in potentially doing that and they’re looking through it uh and then the other guy Juan stto we broken this down as well the Phillies are one of the teams that are able to get a meeting with Juan stto that puts them in the like semi finals of the race for Juan stto it’s probably not likely that he ends up here in Philadelphia but they’re part of the conversation you have the money you could pay him John Middleton does have the ability to go out there and say hey I’m going to just make this team superpowered it’s what the Dodgers have been doing so uh not that you have to do that to win a World Series but something to keep an eye on like the Phillies are not out of the woto sweep Stakes you don’t have to look at that and say well because it’s a long shot it’s never going to happen now that’s not what a long shot means if it was impossible I would tell you that it’s not impossible uh but that is the longest shot of those three guys that I just listed there but maybe there’s somebody else like remember Alec bow is on the trade block right now uh you could move him for someone like super valuable I would look at Alec B from the League’s perspective as a star player I would look at that I don’t know if he’s a World Series tilt player but I think part of that comes from his October reputation and not being able to be big time in the biggest moments but the numbers goodness nearly 100 RBIs back toback years uh he’s hitting in the middle of one of the best lineups in baseball he’s a guy that was an All-Star starter at third base this year now defensively he’s become serviceable like he’s been really really clutch in the early parts of seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies it does tail off a little bit at the end but the Alec bom’s 2024 season reads like a star players season so if you move him what are the limitations on what you could get back well they’re potentially endless and you just freed up some Outfield work with Austin Hayes not being tendered to contract uh we talked about that in our most recent episode so you can scroll back one and you can watch that um yeah let me go ahead and I I I don’t I just don’t I don’t know what you can get back for Alec bom so let me just go ahead and say that I believe that you could get a star player return for Alec b or maybe for Alec bom and other pieces but who else could the Phillies be looking to trade well that’s where this gets interesting right because I believe Buster only’s report and it’s awesome to hear that he’s like and it wasn’t like I think they could it’s like I have a strong feeling they will and so does the rest of the baseball like would be surprised if they didn’t was kind of the vibe that I got from these Buster only quotes about the Phillies potentially acquiring a star player so that should make you feel really good and really excited if you’re a Philadelphia Phillies fan because that means this team is still all in on winning now and they’re willing to do something that shakes things up maybe not subtracting anybody maybe it’s a signing but they’re willing to do something that’s either a strong financial commitment or shifting around of the roster or whatever would make buer only say a World Series tilt type of move where you’re tipping the scales in your favor and with how the World Series looks for the next couple years with LA out there and the Yankees looking good and I mean who knows what the next hot team is going to pop up like the New York Mets were this year you’re going to have to do something significant to get to that World Series tilt that’s a good spot for the Philadelphia Phillies to be and it again you should be excited we take this for granted how often the Phillies are in these type of conversations uh coming up next we’re going to talk about another player that you could potentially move that could help you add a star player like Buster only predicts but is this really the year where you’re going to to get it done because this was a guy that was talked about last year what’s the future old for Nick castanos we’ll discuss coming up as we continue locked on Phillies but let me tell you about Omaha Stakes first yeah it’s steak season and nothing Phillies Rumor Mill when it comes to trades because all of a sudden over the weekend and you go back through some of my old episodes or if you’ve been watching Pretty religiously this offseason you’ll know I brought this guy’s name up a couple times nick caso’s name is back into trade conversations now this is interesting to me because normally like a week ago if I had heard about this I would have said okay well you’re not trading castanos and Bone and maybe thinking about Ranger Suarez moving because he’s in the final year you’re like you’re not just GNA trade every good player just because they’re on a final year of a contract that doesn’t work that’s not how your team gets better but now coupled with the Buster only report it it feels like there’s something Brewing right it feels like Dave dembrowski is sitting in his office and he’s got a bunch of pictures of guys and yarn strings pinned up to the board and he’s trying to put together the mystery of how do we get this deal done it’s almost like you remember the scene I referenced Moneyball a bunch on this podcast because it’s a great baseball movie movie and it’s one of my favorite sports movies of all time but but it’s where Brad Pit is sitting in the office with Jonah Hill and he’s on the phone with like three different GMS at the same time he’s like okay I’m going to pretend to trade this guy here so that the market gets quiet on that guy so I can acquire him then I’m going to actually trade this guy here so that team doesn’t need anybody so the market is actually quiet and he’s putting all this stuff together now that’s ahead of the trade deadline and that’s a movie it doesn’t exactly happen like that but I do see this like I’m getting the Vibes of all these names that are swirling around that the Phillies are interested in trading open to trading actively shopping uh it does feel like this is going to be more of a shakeup off seon than I initially thought and if you’re going to move B and you’re going to move castios those guys casianos has 20 million more on his deal um Alec B is in a situation where he’s probably gonna make eight through arbitration so you’re freeing up some salary you’re figuring that out as far as mitigating how much you’re going to pay somebody I mean Len you move on from Nick castanos who he’s again a $20 million a year player right now on his current salary with the Philadelphia Phillies him and one other midlevel guy and you’ve got room to sign a star player not a Wan stto $700 million dollar contract I mean you could still do that just go higher into the luxury tax thresholds but uh that would give you room to do some stuff so there is something uh you know in Jurassic Park we’re going full movie references today huh you know how in Jurassic Park you could see the water start to shake when the T-Rex first walks up that that might be a dated reference for some people but uh you can hear something like loud shaking in the distance they look down at the glass of water on the table and they could see it shaking so you know something Big’s coming if I’m sitting here and I’m looking over at my coffee table and there was a glass of water over there it would be shaking because of what I’m starting to get the Vibes of out of the Philadelphia philes organization they’re doing something and they’re doing something that seems to be big and Nick casana trade rumors popping back up are just another indicator of that now again like that would be the only thing that makes sense if they do indeed like move castanos is if they’re bringing in a noticeably like like a noticeable Difference Maker I should say a guy that’s going to put you firmly in the conversation for not just World Series because they were in that conversation with if they ran back the same exact roster they’d be in that conversation again this year absolutely they would now they wouldn’t be the favorites and the fan base would be annoyed but make no mistake the Philadelphia Phillies roster when they went out was good enough to be like considered a World Series Contender but now they’re wanting to change things up and everything like that so there’s no doubt that if they move castios and they move bone they’re getting something someone back that’s going to be like oh my goodness I didn’t know that guy was available how in the world did they get that guy oh their chances look significantly better with this guy so uh keep an eye on that that’s kind of what the most important thing about the Nick castanos trade rumors are is because if you’re moving bom that’s already an All-Star caliber player that you’re saying yeah we’re we’re not really good with keeping him and part of that is attitude stuff but part of that is also performance in the postseason late end of the season if you’re G to move Nick casos you’re saying well we have a guy that just played 162 games for us and was probably the MVP of our team for showing up when it matters most especially when our team was in a really really bad stretch late in the season oh by the way nasty in the postseason and has been multiple times right he basically was the Catalyst for winning him Bryce arper the nlds last year against the Atlanta Braves and this year he was your best player in that Series against the New York Mets so uh if you’re going to move both of those guys something better happen uh now castios let’s say you aren’t going to go get like a superstar player from though the combination of those trades and the pieces you get I don’t see the Phillies like I don’t know let’s say they move Alec bone for a star player or let’s say they move Alec bow and then they sign Alex bregman and that’s kind of what Buster only is talking about I don’t see them then also moving on from Nick castanos to do what to have who play right field like is Justin Crawford ready I I don’t think so that doesn’t seem likely for them to call him up and give him a spot in the Outfield you’re too young to unproven that doesn’t seem like the right strategy for a World Series Contender are you signing someone you could but you just had to add salary to get Alex bregman because remember he’s a free agent you can’t trade for him so you trade bone you got signed bregman you’re going up in payroll there do you trade castanos to make room for that bre doesn’t feel like a good enough player for you to give up two potential All-Star caliber guys to for him to play Third Base like I I don’t know and you just removed Austin Hayes so it’s not like you could have Hayes Marsh roas and have some guys that you had last year on this team that were capable of starting or quasi capable of starting it just doesn’t make sense to do all of this if you’re not getting a huge huge return as far as a player that everyone’s going to go this is a Difference Maker so the Nick casting trade rumors base level like the first thing you hear it is yeah I mean I saw is coming I I brought it up a couple of times the more money you get off this contract the more the Phillies are going to look to change it because frankly as good as Nick casianos is he’s streaky and as streaky as he is he’s tough to have as a guy like you don’t want the strikeouts you need more contact in this lineup surrounding power hitters uh it’s no knock on Nick casianos it’s that some people don’t believe he fits the philosophy of this team or not he fits the philosophy of this team too well it’s too much of the same it’s too many similar players like you could have think about basketball you could have some great centers but if you have five of them on the same te team you can’t have all five of them so that’s kind of where I put the Nick caston’s trade rumors for the Philadelphia Phillies so I’ve seen that floated around that’s my sense on it we’ll see if the Phillies have more luck this year than they did last year trying to move him because last year nobody wanted the contract but a year’s Le uh a year less of salary based on what they had to offer last year was something that it was a sticking point we’ll see if that does grease the wheels of potential Nick castanos trade something something is happening though folks so keep your eyes peeled and I’m going to continue to kind of ask around and see what some possible options for the Philadelphia philes are but we’re going to round this out with a little look into the bullpen we’re going to finish out our Bullpen evaluations and then we can get to some depth pieces on the roster as we continue to break down 2024 season evaluation so we’ll get into that coming up next as we wrap up today’s episode of Locked on Phillies but let’s talk about FanDuel first because fandel is absolutely awesome and you need to be ready to potential trade rumors and star Acquisitions and all the sexy stuff but we need to continue to lock down our evaluations of players from the 2024 roster and of the nlds roster and the guys they’re still here we obviously didn’t do Austin hay yet but he’s no longer with the team uh there are only two guys remaining couple of Bullpen pitchers uh and these will be short because one of the guys is not all that good and one of the guys is not all that big of a sample size for us to evaluate Colby Allard and Tanner banks are going to be the last two guys that we look at when it comes to their 2024 seasons and what they were able to accomplish with the Philadelphia Phillies and I’m just going to put them together because frankly I I don’t know there wasn’t really that much that we were looking at with these guys to evaluate like Colby Allard was okay this year he only pitched in seven games he had a five erra you weren’t expecting much for him uh I don’t think he has much of a future with this team I think he was like pitching in that Premier 12 International Tournament that was just going on if you had seen that there was the international baseball tournament it’s like the World Baseball Classic light like none of the big- time players go but clearly if Colby Allard was pitching on that team I think he was uh there and in in that tournament for the United States of America bottom line is if the Philadelphia Phillies have Colby Allard in their Bullpen I don’t think they did enough this offseason to continue to add to it uh he has a career negative 1.3 War at the major league level he has a career 599 ra the guy just isn’t that good he came up as part of and this was his first year in Philadelphia he came up because of injuries and that was really the only reason he made it so uh compared to other major league relievers D minus I’m not going to give him a failing grade but he’s just not that good and compared to what the Phillies needed him to be or what they thought he was going to be 5 e i I’ll give him a c just because that’s average he made the playoff roster which is a strong accomplishment for him I’m sure something for him to be proud of uh I mean he’s not like the oldest guy he’s only 27 so could he develop into something I guess I just don’t really he doesn’t have that wow factor of like this dude’s a major league arm in the year 2024 and I’m not normally a guy that focuses on velocity over everything else because one I never threw that hard and I know that people get caught up in velocity sometimes and they lose a little focus on guy’s ability to truly pitch it’s not just who throws hard it’s who can spot and all we know all the requirements to go into pitching besides just velocity but my gut feeling when I watch Colby Allard pitch is just this guy doesn’t really have it right now and I don’t know if he’ll ever have it now uh we’ll move on to Tanner Banks who was he’s an interesting guy to go ahead and evaluate for the Philadelphia affili he’s going to be back with the team this year they acquired him at the trade deadline and they’ve got him under control right so you’re going to be able to keep Tanner Banks and you have a guy that is a lefty specialist but the overall numbers don’t look all that great right here in Philly he was actually pretty serviceable a 370 ra after being acquired at the trade deadline uh before the trade deadline in Chicago this past year 4.13 ra so this total numbers from 2024 were 398 RA in 63 games he threw 72 in the third Innings that’s a lot I mean listen you might say well Tanner Banks we didn’t see that much of him he threw 24 in the third innings for the Phillies he was kind of that Lefty Workhorse guy that you brought in to be a specialist in lower leverage situations he only gave up one home run in this time with the Philadelphia Phil he’s only six all year which is pretty solid I mean uh 25 walks in 72 in the third Innings you’d like to see him get that one down and the strikeouts well he had 78 so he has some strikeout stuff but he just doesn’t really throw that hard so he’s more of like that crafty Lefty Onley specialist which is fine like that guy can be valuable in a bullpen also remember that’s kind of what we thought Matt strm was a little bit and then like Matt strm significantly better from jump here in Philadelphia because he was signed as a relever they was moved into a starting role remember when Ranger Suarez wasn’t available he looked really good as a starter and there was this whole debate of do you keep him as a starter or move him to the pen then you moved him to the pen he was really good so it’s not like like he popped on the scene in Philadelphia mat Strom I’m not saying Tanner Banks is going to be that guy but what I will say is the conversation about Matt strm when the Philadelphia philes signed him was okay Lefty specialist throw from this weird arm slot got some good stuff could have some strikeout stuff could develop Tanner Banks is a guy that you look at and say okay uh Lefty specialist has great splits against left-handed batter so he’s one of those rare hey we are going to go Lefty Lefty in the spot that becomes less and less of a thing in Modern Baseball with more and more analytics uh he’s 33 so he’s not exactly a spring chicken so I don’t expect him to really develop the same way that strm and Hoffman did but hey maybe you could find something and turn him into do I don’t know what would be a good spot for him to be ER wise if you can get him into the like mid the low threes I know he’s at 37 already if you can get that below 35 he could be a valuable Bullpen guy he could be Lefty Jose Ruiz right that would be exactly what you’re looking for from him as far as production I think you can get that a guy you acquired at the deadline that wasn’t really splashy or flashy but when you look at the numbers he he did his job so compared to other relievers around baseball I’m actually going to give him a C+ he was better than average Major League B reliever this past year uh with the Philadelphia Phillies he wasn’t exceptional there wasn’t anything sexy about Tanner Banks when apologies to him if that hurts his feelings at all there but like he just he was a guy that did what he was supposed to do but didn’t do anything really above it which means uh compared to other relievers I’ll give him a C+ but compared to his expectations I’m just going to give him a C flat out average the same thing that I gave Colby Allard these were just kind of guys that gave you what you expected nothing more nothing less and you didn’t really expect that much from to begin with so they’re some of the Forgotten names of the nlds roster but guys that who knows it it’s a take a shot in the dark with these guys going forward and see if they can become something for this team in their roles that they could potentially have in 2024 definitely a much higher ceiling for Tanner Banks than there is for Colby Allard that’s all for today’s episode of lockon Phillies thank you so much for checking us out I mean really appreciate it once again we are part of the locked
