the college football playoff bracket starting to be filled in as the first round has been completed and after a rough Friday night in South band it was a splendid Saturday for the Big 10 welcome inside our studio and The Big Show Rick piso alongside Anthony Heron plenty to celebrate today at both Penn State and Ohio State we’ve been talking about the depth of this conference throughout the season it has certainly shown up in this initial weekend when you think about both match ups that the Big 10 had on the field today Penn State Ohio State not just coming out with victories but dominance in All Phases from both those teams that took the field today and overall I’d say the message from the first round home teams this is the first time we’ve seen the home field being advantage in the college football playoff and boy has it been one you get the crowd you also get the Midwest or Northeast December weather there was a lot of talk about that heading into home games in places like the Horseshoe now Tennessee tried to show they don’t mind the gold will Howard has a little chuckling you see the OSU quarterback in the background it would be Howard and the Buckeyes laughing last and laughing loudest how about Jeremiah Smith almost unguardable I mean it’s hard to imagine that this is a freshman with the weight you come into this game thinking you know what Tennessee is going to play Man coverage get some when you’re trying to cover Jeremiah one-on-one touchdown in the opening drive six targets for Smith six catches 103 three yards and two touchdowns but he wasn’t the only one AA abuka and give Howard credit that is dropped into the Bread Basket 40 yards two plays later it is one of the two heads in that Ohio State backfield Quin Shan Judkins from one yard out and the Buckeyes lead at 14 nothing as for the other part of that two-headed monster trayon Henderson Anthony had himself a monster evening Henderson was fantastic in the open field throughout this game credit to the Buckey offensive line it’s a good Tennessee defensive front they matched up with first three drives three touchdowns we move to the third quarter Ohio State up 2110 on a critical third and seven LA and Ransom balls had a bit of momentum no longer just 256 total yards OSU goes for 473 there’s the second touchdown connection between Howard and Smith buck guys up 28-1 now 3510 it’s Henderson bouncing off tacklers 24 yards for the score 134 total yards for Henderson and two touchdowns on the evening Ryan Day and the Bucky celebrate they are off to the Rose Bowl with the 4217 win the defense was Stout it was solid but the offense was the star all these guys helping set the tone will Howard more than 300 yds through the air trayon Henderson both catching and running quinon Judkins in the end zone a couple of times and what else can you say about this wide receiver Corp Smith and abuka doing most of the damage against the volunteers our coverage continues from the site of Ohio State’s dominant first round win Dave revson jar jardo Urban Meyer have much more from inside the shoe thanks what an impressive performance by Ohio State 4217 over Tennessee a game that was really never in doubt as impressive a performance as we’ve seen from the Buckey from the word go what stood out Tre the emotions of the Ohio State team you know every time we think this game is more about the physical than the metal I think we make a mistake we were reminded today that when a team’s ready to play emotionally like they were today and they have talent they’re heart to beat to pick yourself up on the carpet like that I mean you were you you got knocked out and I brought up a couple weeks ago you’re going to get test your leadership in that locker room I get all the coaching but that locker room came out today and won that game whatever they did the last two weeks two and A2 weeks in that locker room that’s a testimony there’s some High character tough dudes in that locker room yeah anxious to ask Ry and day about that we’ll get a chance to talk to him a little bit later and and just get a sense because the difference was to your guys’s point I mean Market staggering how much different they were it also felt like schematically they came out a lot different they came out throwing they came out trying to get the ball into the hands of The Playmakers from the word go and even even the Run game Dave was very creative they were doing a lot of misdirection a lot of guys motioning you felt against the Wolverines it was very stagnant they were very creative they did run the ball they threw for over 300 yards I made a comment that this is going to be a throw first game I believe it was but when you throw first and you have to play great pass defense that opens up the running game that’s exactly what happened tonight you know one of the big matchups that we were all talking about before the game was the offensive line against the the Tennessee defensive line and instead of trying to move the big defensive line in the Run game early they did just the opposite just like Iran said they threw the ball they I think they wore the defensive line of Tennessee down because they were constantly pass rushing and justtin R offensive line did a heck of a job protecting all right quick I’m going to be you why don’t you throw the ball to Jeremiah Smith every snap I mean has that ever been done just to just to line up and throw him he’s he’s such a m one of the greatest players and let’s talk about will Howard I mean will Howard did not have a great game against Michigan to say the least he was on Target in this game the confidence I mean I think about those two first drives right the ball to Smith the ball to Iuka Just Right On Target yeah the the aggressiveness I think you know Chip Kelly once you know he called it very aggressive game plan and you you can’t go backwards for you know I’m people grabbing us and saying where was that you got to move on right the aggressiveness the creativity by the play caller Chip Kelly you got to take your hat off to him that was a very creative against that’s one of the best defenses in the Southeastern Conference the creativity and play calling was outstanding and again I mean quarterback’s mental right I mean more than any other position you’ve got to be mentally sharp as a quarterback you’ve got to be ready you’ve got to be a leader you have to do all these things it’s not physical first it’s mental first when you’re in this situation where you lose to Michigan everybody’s down on you and you bounce back you bounce boun bounce back mentally first than physically to score 42 points against a defense who was giving up about 14 per game to absolutely dominate as you guys said statistically I mean this was as complete performance as I think that we have seen all year from the Buckey we’ll talk about the game against Oregon but mentally to not just win the game but to play like this what does that mean as they try to move forward well as you move forward this is still the most talented roster I think in college football you saw it on display tonight what’s that mean as you move forward go back to practice and now a lot like what they did with the Wolverine game you better get this one out of your mind too and get on to the next one and that’s going to be a challenge as well yeah no doubt and you know they’re going to play Oregon second time I know we’re going to talk about it but this team the way they played tonight they’ll be much more prepared to play argon than they were the first time well but guys on to the Rose Bowl for the 17th time we’ll get you ready for that game plenty more coverage as we continue here from Columbus Jens look forward to that Anthony I don’t really think you can even make the comparison and accurately describe the difference between the Ohio State team we saw from their mental approach in this game and the one that we saw in the way they played and attacked or failed to attack in that Michigan game this I think was the team that we expected to see in the final week of the regular season I mean All Phases you know the the approach of the Ohio State players in this game the approach of the Ohio State coaches in this game you could tell top to bottom and and frankly it is something I’ve been talking about it you know here on this network and on Big 10 radio for a couple of weeks now I anticipated this would be a frustrated team frankly an angry team with what they put out there against the Michigan Wolverines I credit to Michigan to win that rivalry game for the fourth year in a row but from an Ohio State perspective it was not the version of the Buckeyes that we’ve seen throughout the season not only have they been hearing it externally but they had to know internally that was not a great Michigan team that they lost to and yet they lost the game and some of that was internal so it did seem to me this was going to be a frustrated and upset version of the Buckey it took the field tonight and we saw them unleash that on the B so they were mentally locked in but they were also physically locked in because the execution was at a very high level from the start the offense will Howard Jeremiah Smith set the tone early but let’s not look past what the defense did in completely taking Tennessee out of this ball game an explosive Tennessee offense had nothing doing in the first half that D line played with a lot of energy I mean between everything we saw from Jack soor Jack so in the first half of this game especially he was the leader of that aggressive temperament and not only because of what was happening schematically because Jim no he wasn’t necessarily you know dialed up with all the blitz package but Sawyer was getting to the quarterback Tula moow was getting to the quarterback Cody Simon as a linebacker was making it happen as well at the second level and in the opposing backfield they were forcing the line of scrimmage put a lot of pressure on that opposing quarterback and Nico imal Ava and they were able to keep him you know sort of off bound throughout the entire game a 25o margin of Victory but you could certainly argue the game wasn’t even that close Ohio State in control throughout and yet it would not be the largest margin of Victory by a big 10 team during Saturday’s first round of the college football playoff there are white outs and then there are white outs covered in white outs that was the situation inside Beaver Stadium for Penn State and SMU you want to talk about that defense I give you Dominic Duca we’re going pick six the other way nitty lions with an early 7 nothing lead and Anthony this is setting a little bit of a trend because if it’s not Duca it was Tony Roos Kevin Jennings Made A Couple of bad mistakes and Penn State’s defense made him pay sometimes it was just a turnover on down sometimes it was Jennings actually turning the football over these takeaways from the Penn State Defense really got them rolling early on the offense didn’t have to do too much to be up by a couple of scores it’s 14 nothing Penn State’s offense had not found the end zone yet SMU in great field position but here’s Duca second pick of the game as he reads Jennings knocks it down three picks 11 tfls and two TDS next Penn State Drive KRON Allen nitty Lions up 28 nothing at the half Allen not done he adds 70 yards Nick Singleton adds 90 Nittany Lions win it 30 8 to 10 they are headed to the Fiesta Bowl for a quarterfinal matchup with Boise State and they will do so on the heels of the largest margin of victory in any cfp game by a big 10 team and wouldn’t you know it the top two on this list happen on the very same day this particular Saturday December the 21st of 2024 certainly A Day to Remember and a day to celebrate for James Franklin the Penn State head coach postgame with Danny Rogers inside Beaver Stadium coach three turnovers for your defense today you hold that SMU offense to under 60 yards rushing what area of that unit impressed you the most yeah they just they played lights out you know obviously when you’re able to get three turnovers two for touchdowns uh offensively took us a little time to get going so that was critical but as good of a first half of defensive football as I’ve been around the crowd here in Beaver Stadium first ever College playoff game here how did they impact this game with the crowd noise yeah especially down this end of the field it was significant there’s no doubt about it uh we’re we’re blessed to play here at Penn State and Happy Valley we got great fans we got tremendous support and it was it was pretty cool to be a part of the first college football game here and have it at home all the offensive touchdowns came from your running backs Kon Allen Nick Singleton what continues to make them one of the best running back Duos in the country yeah it took us a little time to get the running game going but once we did those guys were able to capitalize played really good up front as the game went on same thing at tight end those two guys are fast and they’re violent and they’re physical and we needed that today Fiesta bll hats are already being handed out to this team Boise state is next on your path to a national championship how quickly do you have to process this game and then move on yeah we’re going to enjoy this for a couple hours uh and then we’re excited about our next opportunity against a really good Boise football team how’s your 100th win here coach for you awesome talk talk to these guys yeah thanks coach gas Danny previewed the Fiesta Bowl hats being made and as you can see one of James Franklin’s players delivering the hat to the head coach defensively if you are able to do what Penn State did in the first half alone forcing three turnovers returning two for touchdowns your chances of Victory are awfully good when you are playing at home and you have an offense that can also play keep away I mean this formula was as perfect as James Franken could have ever envisioned and with the weather conditions I would say this game was one that stood out to me where the opponent in SMU was as impacted by the chilly conditions there at Beaver Stadium as any and the Penn State Defense was there to take advantage of every error that SMU made it was an offense for the Mustangs that had turned the football over at some key moments and critical times throughout the season and when it happened Penn State was not only taking the football away they were turning def defense to offense putting it in the end zone so that allows some additional comfort for a Penn State offense that wasn’t necessarily getting out of first gear that much early on but they were creating additional possessions for that offense and then the Run game really started to get going for the nitty Lions as well so you allow your team you allow the Comfort level of even your coaching staff because not only is your defense led by Tom Allen and he got a standing ovation essentially from Andy coton Nikki during the post game because the defense did so well was so dominant early on the initial series snu did move the football and then they thwarted them on a fourth down and from there Penn State really turned the water off they shut the door on the Mustangs Drew Allard didn’t have to do a lot but he was quietly efficient made every play he needed to play you rely on KRON Allen Nick Singleton maybe Andy codal Nikki is able to get a little bit more creative in this Fiesta Bowl matchup against Boise State Tom Allen knows he has his work cut out for him trying to slow down one of the most prolific rushers in college football history Penn State’s first ever appearance in the college football playoff now accompanied by its first ever college football playoff win a 3810 opening round victory over SMU moving the Nittany Lions into the Fiesta Bowl in a quarterfinal Showdown with Boise State looking back on the win that was Saturday at Beaver Stadium Danny Rogers and Matt Millan have much more thanks Rick it is freezing cold right now inside Beaver Stadium I can’t feel my toes but one thing that was red hot today Matt Millan was that Penn State Defense turnovers early and often got this whole thing started yeah because kind of started slow as the game was going and then the first pick six it went back that just that changed the whole complex of the game complexion rather and then and then you got the second pick six and then that kind of got them going but really that offense Penn State’s offense kind of started a little bit slow but they started to pick it up after they got the uh the points on the bo three turnovers today for Penn State Dominic Duca two ints Tony Rojos another pick six that he added in there as well this game looks a lot different without that scoring oh 100% you know this was this was a talented team this SMU team came to play they did a nice job I thought the Jennings kid was outstanding until until the the interception bug bit them that really changed like I said it just changed the complexion of the whole game but defensively I thought Penn State got stronger as the game went on you start to see they start to be able to get after the passer they were shutting the run down game The Run game down pretty well and so I thought the the the biggest obviously the biggest difference was the the touchdowns on the pick sixes and then they of course they added another interception later yeah Richard Smith one of the best running backs in the country came in he averages just under 100 rushing yards to game held to 60 he didn’t have a touchdown in this one defensively up front you talk about Kevin Jenny’s quarterback for SMU he looked uncomfortable smth wasn’t able to get into this game how big was that defensive effort oh they got after the passer they got after Jennings I mean they got after him hard and as the game went on they felt more comfortable in the pass rush and so they were able to get there with four people instead of bringing blitzes all the time which was a huge I think I think from the outside the outside Rush was was just outstanding anytime you can get pressure with four people you’re in good shape on a defense offensively for Penn State 189 rushing yards on the ground KRON Allen Nick Singleton they had all the offensive touchdowns in this one today but postgame Drew Aller James Franklin they still harped on a slow start offensively how did they change that going forward yeah that’s something that they’ve been talking about that’s something they’ve been trying to get to the bottom of they really haven’t been able to do that uh maybe next week in Arizona it’ll be a little warmer they’ll maybe feel a little bit better but they have to be able this offense to be successful they have to be able to run the football effectively they did it today it took them some time it usually does but what one of the things that Penn State does exceptionally well is they just keep on hammering they don’t stop they just keep on hammering that’s what they did today and they ended up having the yardage that they needed 100th win for James Franklin first ever college football playoff game inside Beaver Stadium what message did Penn State send today I thought they sent a pretty strong message I thought they sent with the score and the way they handled ssmu team which is a good football team I thought they said look we’re ready we’re ready to come out get ready cuz here we come cuz next week they’re going to have to stop an outstanding running back in janty they sure will Boise State Fiesta Bowl is on the horizon but for now 38 to10 is the final inside Beaver Stadium no no gloves no I mean did I mention that I need gloves do you are you good you good oh yeah I’m problem not a problem you’re a tough guy we appreciate you all right let’s send it back to Chicago Danny one of the toughest guys I know Matt Millan just a few hours after Penn State posted the big 10’s largest ever margin of victory in a college football playoff game Ohio State came within a field goal of matching it 4217 over Tennessee setting up a quarterfinal date against Oregon in the Rose Bowl as it’ll be round two for the bucks and ducks for more on looking ahead to that one we take you back to the Horseshoe Dave revson Jerry dardo and Urban Meyer standing by by once again Rick thanks cannot wait for the rematch of Oregon in Ohio State it was one of the best games of the year the Ducks pulling it out 3231 when they played in Eugene in mid October a game that had seven lead changes the dynamic of this game is so interesting her but I want to start with you playing a team for a second time give us a sense of how that works what the advantages disadvantages might be ironically I’ve done it one time in my career as an assistant against Jerry dinardo at LSU uh very very unique situation doesn’t happen very often you know they all say the team that lost the first one has an advantage over the second one I don’t buy that this is a brand new game it’s going to be in the Rose Bowl uh I would much rather be Ohio State right now because you played if you got through this I don’t know the injury report if they got through this St Healthy Advantage Ohio State I know Oregon’s been resting but as a head coach I’d be be very very concerned about sitting on you know practicing for 3 weeks as opposed to playing like you did so Advantage Ohio State yeah the the the amount of time isn’t always the the more the better I think that’s really tricky for a coach to to manage that time both of these teams are different than when they first played right Oregon in the championship game of Penn State wasn’t great defensively they were very good offensively we you and I were obviously there all three of us were and so this is a defense at Oregon that right now I’d give the advantage the way Ohio State’s offense played today I would give the advantage to Ohio State’s offense going into the game but people say it’s hard to beat a team twice I think I think that’s probably overrated I think there’s been enough time in between where it’s not like you’re playing a week two weeks in a row now the Ohio State secondary has not you look at their schedule and who they played all year they have not faced anything close to the Oregon wide receivers and we all saw what happened in that game so I can imagine these next what it’s going to be a week two weeks whatever it is that’s the emphasis because you can go through AIO State schedule they have not seen anything close Penn State does have the receivers the wver have the receivers Tennessee did not have the receivers they’re going to get ready to face it or if you remember in that game guys Ducks eight plays 25 yards or longer so it’s going to be a huge challenge for that Ohio State Defense what about the flip side oh you know you guys mentioned Ohio State offensively Oregon the struggles defensively in the Big 10 championship ship game against Penn State how important you think this time is for the ducks in terms of figuring out what’s going on on the D you know it’s it’s like any it’s like going to a bowl game right you really don’t know exactly what to prepare for you know you you you watch the tape and you try to figure out what their core offense and defense is but you you’ve got to be ready to adjust game day when you have this much time in between yeah I’d be concern you know Ohio State’s offense the biggest concern was how would the center and two guards work out they will look fantastic today again I think Oregon’s a different animal I got a lot of respect for they had 10 sacks against Washington we did a couple breakdowns on BTN with the urban analysis that that’s one of the best defensive lines in the country so I once again this is a get this one it’s done celebrate SLE fights on and on to the next you know the way Jim nolles coached the off the defense today and called the defense today was based on how well the offense was doing and so if if you if their offense is going to do that well against an Oregon defense I think it really takes Oregon offense I think it really takes the pressure off the Ohio State Defense the Ohio State Defense wasn’t under a lot of pressure tonight no because of the offense I wi it’s 21 nothing fairly they had 21 points and I just want to add one thing David what I would do as well as I would go with good on good every second of the day especially receivers I would force the the Ohio State secondary to force cover the Ohio State I wouldn’t have Scout teams I’d have it good on good because they they have not seen that speed one time all year this will be the second time they face it I mean the talent that is going to be on that field that’s great is over the top it’s just going to be a fabulous game in all big 10 Rose Bowl the way it should be or get against Ohio State cannot wait until Pasadena guys oh from one Penn State team that completely turned things around to get where they are to another that turn things over to get where they are Penn State with three picks in a CF game tying 2014 Ohio State in that epic semi-final win against Alabama for the most ints in a single cfp game two of the men who picked off passes Dominic Duca Tony roas standing by with Danny Rogers and Matt Millan as we take you back to Beaver Stadium thanks Rick and a big thank you to Dominic Duca Anton Ros for toughing out this cold still coming out here to talk with us Dominic you got things stting with your pick six in the first quarter walk us through that scoring play yeah so we had a blitz called and uh the dline got home was able to see the running back sneak out and uh make a play there and I just happy I can do that for the dlon Tony just to be clear I know you had to have some running back background because watching you run with that pick six it looked like you were a natural you a running back in high school or something yeah I I was a running back I kind of got recruited um as for a running back too uh so you know I had to pull out my my bag um you know I just text B with my you know arm tuck all that so you know just brought back my running back D no everything looked great I got to tell you the run after the catch was better than the catch itself yeah that’s just an outstanding job yeah my legs were getting uh fatigued actually I I almost I almost fell and I thought that that uh old Lin was going to tackle me cuz and then yeah I couldn’t go in the next drive cuz I was too gassed um never like your teammates would have never let you down you know oh no he would have never heard the end exactly you two don’t know this but your defensive coordinator Tom Allen lost is mine in the Press Box especially after your pick six Tony how has coach Allen impacted this Penn State Defense in its first season with you guys uh just his energy I mean he he’s has like an energ Energizer buddy uh mentality I mean he’s just always on go mode always trying to keep us hype always trying to keep us our heads on our shoulders too so he’s been a great addition for us yeah I’d say what he said just his energy um is contagious from practice to meetings to games um everybody feels the energy and I feel like that’s what we’ve been missing as a defense and that’s what came out to when you watch us this game today the game really started off kind of slow and then the interceptions changed the whole course of the game and so um and you guys had to talk about that in the silent because you could you could kind of feel it couldn’t you mhm well I mean 100% I mean just being able to do that for Aon getting home I mean they’re putting pressure on the quarterback putting him in those tough situations and putting him in passing situations being able to let the back seven eat and uh just being able to do our job then so you go off this game now you going to get ready have to play the next G out of the Fiesta Bowl and your thoughts on that yeah I mean you know anything’s better than the C right now but uh yeah we’re excited um obviously second round um that’s everyone’s dream and you know we just got to keep stacking days starting tomorrow at practice and we look forward to it starting tomorrow Paige turns congratulations you guys congratulations guys you deserved it let’s send it back to Chicago was an easy home win for Penn State easy home win for Ohio State and Ryan day is made a habit of easy wins against really good teams against AP top 10 teams inside the horseshoe with they at the helm Ohio State 7- one in those eight games and look at the point production scoring nearly 34 per went over the 40 point mark in the win over Tennessee the Ohio State headman now with Dave revson and Jerry dardo as we take you back to Columbus Rick thanks Ryan so impressed with the way you guys came came out I mean you were ready to play this game was essentially over after the first quarter take us through kind of from where you were after the last game to getting your team to this point and ready to go in the way they were it would have been over in the first quarter if we didn’t throw the interception going in there because I thought you know man we had a chance to go 28 nothing but you know then we go into halftime and you know we’re up by 11 uh and then I thought we did a really good job coming out in the second half so I thought the way we came first half and then obviously the way we came out in the second half was the difference but um now it just speaks to the the type of people we have in this program and um you know it’s no secret that it wasn’t easy the last 3 weeks around here but you know we took a week to kind of you know uh identify where the bodies were and and figure all that out and um and but then we had to get things fixed and that’s the bottom line and you got to go about the business of getting things fixed and so I thought I thought we did that we put a plan together we explained to the players what that was and then we found out we were playing Tennessee on that Sunday and then we had two great weeks of of practice and you know for our seniors to finish their last game out here with a win um you know says a lot about them but also builds momentum going into the Oregon game use the term getting things fixed what were the things that you felt like needed the most fixing well I I thought you know first off when we lost Seth before the Indiana game um it was different Seth really made a huge impact on our offensive line and Truth to be told in that Indiana game we didn’t play very good on offense you know we got you know the punt return for a touchdown we had the turnover down here and we we didn’t really do a very good job and then we went into to the last game and um you know didn’t didn’t really run the ball very well didn’t throw the ball very very well either but but didn’t really maximize our strengths very well that was the first thing and I thought we called the better game here but I also thought what we did in the game maximized what we could do up front I thought we practiced better we were more accurate in what we did um and we were more aggressive when did you feel like you knew this team was going to be so emotional in today’s game I mean when when did you say we got it well you never know as a coach right um but when we came up for warm-ups and it they were on fire you could just feel it I’m like oh boy but to me it was senior tackle this past Sunday which is a tradition that’s been going on here at Ohio State for over 100 years and the families come in and the seniors get up there and they speak for a minute or two and give a message and thank everybody in the program but also give a message to the Freshman just to hear these guys and how proud they are to be Buckey and the type of men that they are uh I I knew that we were Mak a run here deep in this thing what’s your schedule going to be like now as you have an you have another extended amount of time to get ready for the game yeah how how’s that going to work yeah you know I didn’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves but we did look ahead and you know we’re going to have to get away a little bit for Christmas but we’re going to try to get some work in before that and then turn around and have a normal game week as possible what’s the challenge of facing a team for a second time you know I’m not really there yet I’m just getting off of this thing um but you know I think we’re to to different teams we played in the middle of the year um I’m sure they’re different I have not watched them on film um but I’m sure they’re different we’re very different and so it’d be one thing if we played them you know a couple weeks ago I mean I feel like that was you know forever ago we played that game so um you know we’ll look at the film and see what fits but I think we both evolved probably as The Season’s gone on I know you’ve been out there once before as a head coach there’s still a certain importance I think in a gravity to the Rose Bowl in the Big 10 what does it mean to be going this is this will be my third one and you know love to go three for three um it’s a beautiful stadium and certainly the history of you know the Big 10 teams playing in the Rose Bowl um and the tradition and Archie statue there and everything um you know it means a lot to us that we have the opportunity to go play in this Rose bow coach you have as tough a job as there is in the country I hope you feel great about yourself and you did a great job well well thanks coach yeah thanks we got a lot of football ahead of us but I appreciate that thank looking forward the next one Ryan day thanks a lot for your time very much appreciate it let’s go back to Rick and Chicago
