newest sense fan today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel you can start the season with a big return on FanDuel new customers can place a five bet and you’ll get started with $150 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins visit fanduel.com to get started today is Monday November 25th and the Ottawa Senators need to end this five game losing streak tonight up against the Calgary Flames it’ll be the Ottawa Senators final game of their 4 game homeand where Ross and I hoped they would find a way to get two wins out of four so far 0 for three tonight’s the last chance to try to salvage something before the Ottawa Senators head back on the road and they welcomed a bunch of Western teams to the nation’s capital the West won all of them hopefully not tonight and then the Ottawa Senators head on a Western Road Trip themselves for a couple games over in in California but we all know how last game went up against the Vancouver Canucks a 4-3 loss really a 4-1 loss the Ottawa senders have a push at the end of the game but unconvincingly I don’t think many sense fans thought that push was actually going to go anywhere it just makes the score look a little better at the end of the day which does nothing for a 28th Place team your Ottawa Senators and they’re up against the Calgary Flames team who kind of has the opposite effect of what’s going on in Ottawa like in Ottawa a lot of the stats a lot of the analytics they look good but this team is not getting it done in Calgary it’s the exact opposite I mean they don’t have a lot of amazing stats I was looking through on nhl.com the team stats I was trying to figure out how are the Calgary Flames doing so good right now 12 six and three on a 4game win streak is their power play clicking is their penalty kill shutting things down are do they have a superstar or two that’s racking up points no is the answer to all of that so the Ottawa Senators are going to have to find a way to make those analytics work in their favor and get a win or at least at least get a point in this game they need points desperately and it’s not going to be easy because like I mentioned the Calgary Flames are on a four game winning streak and the Ottawa centers are trying to do some things to shake things up getting help from Belleville I’ve got my Belleville Senators Jersey hanging up here they’re getting help from Belleville and it’s Zack achuk that gets the call up once again he’s already spent a couple games in the NHL this year was sent back down to Belleville for a couple more games and was brought back up and Zach mckuin was placed on waivers and Travis Green has really shaken up the lines uh I don’t have the line graphic today you guys will learn that Ross is the graphics guy of this podcast but the lines as of yesterday because the aut centers are not skating today they will have off ice workouts and meetings no skate today Top Line Brady kachuck Tim STA and Adam godet okay second line clo Drew Josh Norris Drake bson we’ve we’ve come to recognize that line third line L Ridley Greg no longer in the top six Shane pinto and Nick cousins is elevated from the fourth line and the fourth line This is a brand new look fourth line Michael amadio Zack kapchuk and David Pon Gregor was the extra skater not sure if he’s healthy yet or not and then even things are shaken up on defense Sanderson with hammeck oh boy shabat Jacob Bernard talker and clevin with Nick Jensen now these are the lines from November 24th courtesy of TSN 1200 and they do say no Zub at practice so I’m not sure if maybe he’s banged up or what’s going on and if he’s not and he’s in the healthy I’m not sure who the placeholder guy is is it hamnik who’s paired with Sanderson or is it jbd who’s paired with Shabbat I’m not sure we’re going to see how that goes it’s interesting that Travis Green has split regardless of how that goes he’s split up the Shabbat Jensen pair which has had so much success this year and Jensen will be playing with Tyler cevin likely because cevin struggled a little bit the last couple games and you’re hoping to get him going and Nick Jensen has been this team’s best defenseman by far it’s not even close um so my lock locked on player is g to be Zack estap chuk it’s his second s in the NHL like I mentioned only one assist in six games but in Beville in nine games he got eight points and when he was recently down there in three games he had a goal and two assists so a point per game in his little stint and I think he is the right player to call up uh it’s good to be able to get him with another opportunity with the Ottawa Senators and it’ll be interesting to see how that fourth line goes with Michael amario and David Pon flanking him and as far as the Calgary Flames go like I mentioned it’s not like they have all stars that are carrying this team the top two two point producers on their team are Rasmus Anderson and McKenzie weager two defensemen and they’re sitting at 13 and 12 points 13 and 12 points if that was the Ottawa Senators they would be sixth and seventh in points on this team yet Who’s laughing when they have a much much much better record and they’re on a four-game win streak not a five game losing streak but my Lookout is going to be ottawa’s own McKenzie weager like I mentioned he’s second on the team in points and he’s been hot lately in the last two games he has four assists including three assists in a 3-2 win up against the New York Rangers so he assisted on all three goals in that game and the one thing I will note about the Calgary Flames is they are involved in a lot of really close games here like even just their last three games have all been one goal games two of those games they’ve won in shootout and then the fourth game on that win streak was a two- nothing win up against the Nashville Predators and in fact in November they’ve got six games where they’ve been in one goal games and five of those games have resulted in either going to overtime or shootout so the Calgary Flames are no stranger when it comes to being able to stay close in games and unlike the Ottawa Senators who when games are close they’re not able to either push it over the edge and get that win in regulation but the auto center struggle to even tie it up so that you can get an opportunity to automatically get one point one point would be so nice they only have one point in the last five games and that was an overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers or get it overtime or shoot and actually win the damn thing that would also be great we’re hoping they can have a close game up against the Calgary Flames and get at the very least one point I’m hoping for a win though we got to snap this five-game losing streak if they go on a six-game losing streak and head on the road I don’t I don’t know that’s going to be tough for S fans if you guys watch the postcast you know that Martian myself and Ross were struggling and it was not it was not a Vibe cast for sure it was a vent cast but it was good to flush all those feelings out it’s a new week it’s a new game as Martian tweeted out today he is ready to be hurt again I think all s fans are ready to be hurt again and we’re hoping Monday night hockey can give this team a boost speaking of Monday Night hockey it’s the first time the Ottawa Senators will be on Amazon’s Monday night hockey so we thought what better way to bring that in than have our guest Andy Petrillo from Amazon Monday night hockey on the show to talk about her experience working with Amazon talk a little bit about the auto now to our interview with Andy pillo all right we now welcome a very very special guest a Trailblazer in the industry you know her from hackey night Canada definitely not Leaf TV back in the day or on PSN 1050 radio now you can find her on Amazon Monday night hockey and Thursday night Coast to Coast it’s Andy patrilla welcome to lock on sends feels long overdue how are you doing today I know I’m fantastic although I’m not surprised Ross I mean Have you shared with people that you actually worked on a Leafs show for a while you shared this right phsy he he likes to refer to it as a TSN Radio show that happened at lunch um in Toronto yeah I think people are able to piece together that it was Leaf’s lunch Andy I gotta I gotta ask you first firsthand report what was it like working with a diard sense fan that was producing Leaf’s lunch I mean that must have been a a strange circumstance well I always found it kind of uh interesting that when he would give me the rundown it would be a lot of sense talk for no reason I’m like why are you sliding this stat in in there or why do you want to reference the game that they played I’m like I just I’m not understanding and finally I figured out he was the Diehard sense fan but you know he took it on the chin a lot of times and we had to praise the leaves and talk about incredible the regular season was and what Austin Matthews was doing and he had to put out the Twitter poll questions for it and yes you were in it buddy you were in well hey hey we got to hang out a lot and I got to learn a lot from you honestly and what I love too is the rotating second host how I we got all these different opinions in and who knew that just a short couple years later your good friend Dave Pand would be in Senior Management in Ottawa I know and by the way I like I sent him a message where it it may have had some expletives because the day before that got announced I like talked on the phone we were on the phone for like an hour catching up he’s talking about you know this new place that he bought how he’s loving life and he’s got this whole routine with his you know beautiful partner Susan and all this kind of stuff then like the next day it’s aoun day I’m like you little liar I’m like funny how you left that out he’s like I swear it all came together so quickly but I’m really happy for him because I you know having worked with him and you know this he has that kind of mind right he has that management mind he has that clinical mind and there’s a reason why he was a c for many years in the NHL as well he he brought that kind of presence he sees the game in a different way so I was really happy for him and I know he’s really happy in Ottawa and I’m looking forward to having dinner with him on Sunday when I’ll be there although I told him he better give me the true updates now I don’t try to hide anything or hold anything back I don’t want like the next day at the game some big trades announced like excuse me so uh yeah but anyways he yeah Dave Pand is an awesome guy so hopefully some good things happen for him in Ottawa well it’s a perfect transition because I was tuning in on Amazon last weekend game seven the show that’s on there yeah and who what do you know episode two comes on and there’s Dave P in front and center in the 1987 Stanley Cup finals against the Edmonton Oilers and that brings me to your new gig one what was the big reason for getting back into hockey I know you were you were into the soccer for a little while there yeah well truth be told I didn’t really want to leave hockey it was just you know the way the industry goes it was it was 2021 when I had to make this decision because I was kind of at this Crossroads in my career where to your point I’m also on one soccer is another streaming platform that does the Canadian Premier League your Atletico Ottawa their coach just stepped down by the way so we’ll see who the new head coach will be there so and the national teams they also broadcast that and you know it was just like between that and still doing CBC and my weekend and you know coverage and my Olympic coverage uh even put the Olympic coverage in your intro that’s that’s amazing that just shows how deep your resume goes well and it just goes to show I mean it was It was kind of busy at that time and I just had to make a decision and it just happened to go that way of of one soccer CBC and it really did break my heart to have to leave TSN you know as you’re you’re one of them right these incredible people that I get to work with it’s always the people you never want to leave the people right like that’s you know that as cheesy as that may sound it’s it’s the truth um and yeah I I knew that if I made that decision I would be stepping away from hockey but I had already like many of us we we heard the rumors of you know we knew the women were in a fight to get their league going we knew that it was a matter of time before something was going to happen and I knew CBC was going to be in on those rights so I was kind of keeping my fingers crossed and lo and behold it did come to fruition so I did get back into hockey technically last year I was covering the professional women’s hockey league and yeah and then the Amazon thing came about and yeah it just it felt like a felt like a homecoming for me because a never wanted to leave but B Hockey is what I’ve been doing since I started in this career covering like Junior a hockey you know the new market hurricanes and the Thornhill Thunderbirds and Aurora Tigers like you know way back in the day that was my in and I to the industry and I also just love the sport so this feels great to be back what is it about the opportunity with Amazon that really intrigued you Andy like what’s uh what is so different that Amazon is trying to do that pequ your interest well first and foremost I think it’s it’s another player and I think it’s another uh platform that offers you know it’s a variety of opinion it’s a variety of of voices and I think that’s something we need in this in this country right like you look at the United States and I’m sometimes it can be an apples to oranges comparison because they’re just so much bigger than us but you look at the amount of networks they have not just from the national level but also to the regional level and it’s just um a ton of content that people can absorb so we don’t really have that here in Canada unfortunately so a I just love the fact that you do have another player in the game and and B again anyone you know who’s been in this industry for a long time they see the writing on the wall and things are moving in the direction of streaming and why wouldn’t you get on board with that and uh you know again I’ve been doing for the past six years with one soccer Amazon obviously is this bigger Beast with a sport that is the number one in this country and we hit the ground running though because as much as that’s what’s different new player streaming platform all the people are hockey people so a lot of the people I work with like the the main truck producer this guy by the name of Mark Asin who’s an absolute genius and is fantastic he was one of my producers at Leaf CD like he when I first came in the industry he was one of my producers one of my mentors so it’s like this full circle moment a lot of the people in the truck they’re all hockey people obviously the people on air hockey people so it um it it didn’t take much even to convince me to just work with this incredible talent and so far it has been amazing and you’re never going to be able to duplicate um the Red Zone Channel or but you’re getting pretty close like because hockey is obviously different you don’t have 16 games going on at once but we saw it with that Coast to Coast show and how every Thursday you guys are jumping from game to game what is it behind the scenes when you’re jumping like how how every second does does that change you think this is just tea let me tell you how I’m recovering the next day like it is it is insanity I believe that I mean it’s yeah so last night we had 10 games we’re gonna have a couple nights where there’s like 12 14 games and kind of what’s what’s different but also what’s pretty exhilarating about a Thursday show so NFL Red Zone I mean that’s exactly it Red Zone so you kind of have this indication that either a touchdown or a field goal or something’s going to happen right but in hockey you can’t predict what a goal is going to happen I mean last night we had a goal 11 seconds in and we had another goal 27 seconds into a game as you know you can get a goal quickly off a face off you know you have like a Mark Andre flurry blooper where it looks like it’s going to be a routine clearance and that ends up being a goal so you just have to be on your toes because that’s the whole point of the show is you’re just jumping into these games where there’s a goal where there’s a fight where there’s a power play and uh it’s it’s pretty chaotic hopefully it comes across fun not chaotic the way it is in my brain but again it’s another great Crew That’s able to just keep their eye on all these games and and and bring them to people so far everyone seems to be loving it because again it’s way it’s it’s the it’s the way people are consuming their content now again back in the day sorry if I’m going to keep saying leaps on this show but when I was at Leafs TV and this would have been early 2000s one of our producers came up with this this concept of like first of all we had game in 30 so you would take the game shrink it down to 30 and everyone’s like what are you doing here right we’ll take the best of the game then we had game in six which was literally six minutes and we’re like what are you doing right so but now you see how people even consume it in even like less amount of time so a show like Thursday nights it’s just people being able to check in on all the games and we just know that it’s the new generation the way they view uh and and we have received some of our viewership numbers and that seems to be the age group like 18 to 34 that’s the majority of the age group that’s tuned into the show because that’s their viewing habits now and that’s what you want to be going in on because that’s they’re just going to keep getting into their Prime and having families and all that I think the timing of this is perfect and it’s so cool to see on Thursday nights where is it always going to be Jason dear though because we got some beef with that guy he’s on your panel all the time or no just sometimes okay good so what’s nice about the show and was also a bit of a challenge is that I do have different hosts every Thursday you’re used to that it’s similar to lunch exactly so I mean last night I had uh Scotty Hartnell and Mike Ru okay nice and next week we’re off because it’s American Thanksgiving but I’m gonna have like Paul binet’s gonna be on the show right like we have like yeah it’s all these different guys that come on it so that it is wonderful um The Challenge obviously is I to your point like you have to adapt to your your analyst because the week before I had PK suban and Kevin weeks it was a party for five hours it was a party right last night great time but you could see was a little bit more you know okay let’s have a chat here let’s be a little bit more analytical and it just it’s a different vibe right so every Thursday you just don’t know what you’re going to get you’re G to get a ton of action with the games but the panel uh always is a nice little surprise we’re going to get back to our interview with Annie patrill in just a moment but first we got to tell you about our friends over at prize picks prize pick is Petrillo what what is it about hockey that Drew you back to the sport like you mentioned you cover soccer you’ve done Olympics all these kinds of things so what is it about hockey that you’re like ah I just got to get back to that it’s home uh and you know and even though I wasn’t covering it religiously like I was before I was still watching it like it’s just it’s a sport that I love and I was still keeping on top of all the news and all the action and watching the games and yeah it’s just it’s it’s something that um how do you explain it it’s just you know it’s in your it’s in your blood like I grew up playing hockey like as a little kid and especially like on the streets and then I I grew up admiring the players and then when I had an opportunity to work in hockey like I said you know when I was at a local cable station we did a game of the week every Thursday oddly enough so every Thursday we’re at the rink and it’s the smell of like the ice that kind of has that black marker smell it’s the smell of the french fries and the really gross hot dogs it’s the smell of the burnt coffee you’re walking into these rinks right and then everything is just so familiar and so I never really stopped following the sport so the opportunity to get back in it was like hell yeah and you know again like going a lot of these rinks it’s like a family reunion every time I’m like what’s up what’s up what’s up because I know all the people like even my first year working with the lease I traveled with the team on the charter so I was going to all these ranks a lot of security a lot of ushers they’re all the same people from like 20 years ago so it’s pretty amazing it’s been like a homecoming so it was it was a no-brainer for me to be like yes please I want to get back into hockey so we saw your rinkside in Winnipeg a couple weeks ago you will be in AWA this Monday sends Flames what are you most excited about other than a dinner paid by Dave fulin yeah I did sucker him into that well I love a Canadian matchup and hopefully it’s going to be a good one I mean obviously last night the Ottawa Senators even though they’ve been inconsistent and that’s kind of what is that four losses in a row now they showed some bite they showed some fight it was just a little too late whereas the Calgary Flames had to dig deep in their game uh last night against the New York Rangers right after being up two nothing they let the Rangers score two goals in 16 seconds to tie that up and ultimately um you know the Flames came out with the win even though it was like a comedy of airs when they had the empty net they couldn’t score on it to just like seal the victory how many times can you miss an open net just look back at the final minute of the Calgary Flames game last night get some Rangers like what happened but I think that you know the the Flames are kind of going on the up and obviously the sends are just kind of staying here and well it’s November we don’t we don’t like November apparently every month every year every year November just for some reason the Senators cannot win games I I don’t understand it that is bizarre yeah yeah the co Year Andy we waited 310 days to see a senator’s game and then the second month so the equivalent of November it was February obviously the season started in January they went 110 and one that that’s how we got our our feet back wet after 310 days without sense hockey and now they’re three six and one this November maybe I don’t know is November when they just like start doing their Christmas shopping they’re a little distracted I don’t know maybe they maybe they’ll feel better in December I don’t know that is a strange stat though that is a very strange stat although I’m starting to hear like and you know you kind of rely on people who cover the team on a regular basis and are around them but everyone was putting out on Twitter you know strange Vibe around the team and I don’t know like I don’t know if changes are going to be made but I sometimes I think a nice little Canadian matchup can you know light something under teams maybe you know obviously you’re going to hope it’s your team yeah so hopefully we get ourselves a good game because you do have like you know the flames right now playing out of their skin like it’s still kind of crazy to me that they’re top three in their division and yet their leading goal scorer Jonathan huberto has six goals like what but they’re getting a Dum by committee right and then you have obviously the S who have this incredible talent but for some reason it just doesn’t seem to come together on a consistent basis because you do have games where you’re like holy crap that was amazing and then you have this stretch right now where you just can’t really um you can’t really explain it I mean sure you guys have have probably you know dived into it obviously it’s a little like I brought this up like even last night said you know it’s kind of um it’s kind of interesting and maybe it’s just me talking out loud and there’s really no con connection or maybe there is but I’m like how is it that allar and San are both stinking it up they need each other yeah and I mean I think entering last night they were also both at an 884 save percentage so it was like they were mirroring each other and again like maybe it’s it would be great to have a a gold on who can explain just like those types of Partnerships how you push each other how you help each other motivate that internal competition what is it that they say to one another that gets the other one going and then now that they’re separated they’re missing it it’s like twins getting kind of separated and now they’re lost on their own because to me I just don’t think it’s a qu now of course it’s you know especially for allmark different team different system different defense sure right but the fact that Swan’s going through it as well how many times can you keep saying well he didn’t have a training camp okay well we’re into the season now like enough’s enough right I think they’re 20 like 20 games in now but I just find that a little bizarre that they’re both struggling now that they’re not together yeah as a goalie friendly show we’ve had a bit of a tough time here sticking to that over the course not only this year but last year too and then Unis Corpus Salo gets shut out last night which is just kind of like the cherry on top for S fans it’s like where where was this last year zero shout outs from him come on please but he we’re excited about this game against the Calgary Flames on Monday love getting to allow our fans and viewers of Monday Night hockey on Amazon for the first time the Senators will be on it so I figured it was a perfect time to have you on and get to know you a little bit for the the viewers here obviously we’ve had the chance to work together and and I’m super grateful for that my final question you’re still so young but have so much experience and you’ve been reporter host and you’re doing both those with Amazon Andy how do you mentally prepare for each is it a different preparation or is it much of the same yeah firstly thank you that’s a lie but I can appreciate no I’m serious ask Psy I said you know what you have to you have to do things in the industry to get your foot in unfortunately for me it was covering the Leafs but being able to do it as you said it’s all about the people and and I mean it when I say that I learned a ton uh getting to be your producer occasionally over the course of those three years well I I appreciate that and you’re right I mean everything is different obviously following the game watching the game your knowledge like all that is is the same but from play byplay to color to host to ringside what you’re doing is completely different you know like Rink Side I just know that I’m going to be doing a lot more of the you know one-on-one interviews with players so you know that we do like the sit down interview in the morning which is a little bit more broader so you know you do your research into a specific player to just know what to ask him obviously with the intermission interviews you got to really focus in on the game and what are some of the things that you got to pull from it to ask that player to hopefully not get your kind of standard answer um so it’s just it’s a little bit more of of a different kind of Engagement whereas when you’re hosting it’s a little bit broader right so it’s kind of the bigger picture bigger story lines you can play off somebody you obviously have your Analyst at your desk so you’re basically you know setting them up you’re the picture frame there the picture boom like toss it off and uh but again you kind of have like certain stats story lines in your brain to contribute right because with ringside you got to be quicker you don’t have that much time so you know you’re your thoughts have to be a little fast whereas with hosting you could do a little bit more storytelling um but it’s they’re great challenges both of them are are are different and their own way and yeah so Monday I get to be the Storyteller because I will be hosting that one uh ad and ver will be doing ringside for that one now which Senators players or story lines are you looking to cover for Monday’s game well I’m a goalie hugger so of course I’ll be looking at just he who’s going to be getting the start but yeah like what kind of goal tending right the S getting obviously needing that to be um needing that to be strong uh you know looking at starts obviously for this team again they they seem to be able to get back or or at least create something a little spicy but I want to see a good start and I think it goes without saying you know you just what can Brady kachuck do to help turn this team around this is a guy who was named captain at 22 he’s now 25 like you know you just this is his team so he’s got to be able to kind of rally The Troop so you know we’ll dig a Little Deeper obviously come Monday but right out of the gate especially after what I saw last night that’ll probably be what I’m definitely looking at Andy Petrillo Amazon Monday night hockey and Coast to Coast every Thursday Andy great to see you really appreciate it and it’s awesome to see you back covering hockey on a full-time basis every week and hey pwl season around the corner too the Ottawa charge and maybe we’ll be able to get you down uh back on the show to chat about that later on this season and we look forward to seeing you on the screen every Monday and Thursday thanks for doing this thanks guys appreciate it all right stick Taps to Andy patrill for joining us awesome interview with her friend of the show and we’re excited to watch her on Amazon Monday night hockey really cool experience and hopefully the Ottawa Senators can have a good showing for the first time on Amazon Monday night hockey as you can see behind me I got the Belleville Senators Jersey on me so let’s do a quick Belleville Senators update Unfortunately they did not win their last game up against the Laval rocket but they did split the weekend series they won on the road 42 and they lost 3-1 at home the Laval rocket are the number one team in the North Division in the AHL the Belleville cators now sit in fifth place in the division just one point behind the Rochester Americans so we’re hoping maybe Zach mckuin will help give that team a bump as he’s an elite AHL player but they’re going to be without Zack stap for a little bit as he’s been called up to the NHL and he’s now centering that fourth line uh usually on Mondays we do our Prospect roundups I can tell you that Blake Montgomery opened his account in the OHL he scored his first goal with the London night so you love to see that things hopefully working out great for Blake Montgomery over with the London kns that’s all we got for today’s show Ross is uh gonna be very busy with his newborn baby We wish all the best to him Rachel and the entire family exciting stuff there the newest sense fan welcomed into the world and we hope that that’ll be a bit of a a slump Buster here the old baby bump hopefully that works for podcasters covering hockey teams as well because the Ottawa centers got to snap this five-game losing streak and they have the opportunity to do that tonight up against the Calgary Flames you know we’re going to have a postcast it’s going to be Jack and I and I know what you’re thinking Jack and py postcast don’t always go great work we’re turning this ship around we’re turning the ship around Jack and I are gonna have a great postcast for you uh usually about 15 minutes after the game you guys know the drill when it comes to the postcast thank you for listening to today’s episode for myself Brandon pillar for Ross Levon this has been another edition of the locked on Senators podcast it’s your team every day
