and then if you’re the Red Sox you go out and sign Blake Snell or Mike fed you do some other things as well and bingo you are back in [Music] business welcome everyone to the MonDay edition of fair territory and believe it or not we have an actual free agent signing a significant one not one of these one year two and a half million dollar kind of deals on Monday morning John Heyman the first to report that the angels are in agreement with us Kikuchi left-handed pitcher on a three-year $63 million deal this qualifies as something of a surprise not with the number that was exactly what Tim Britain of the athletic projected three years 63 million but the team so one obvious question is what are the Angels doing we’re going to get to that and we’re going to get to some other things as well on this show the Atlanta Braves what they’re doing cost cutting the Red Sox one of the most intriguing teams out there right now this off season but let’s start with Kikuchi because he is a fascinating case study in how a player can rebuild his value rather quickly if you remember Kikuchi in his first 22 starts with the Blue Jays this season 4.75 erra he gets traded to Houston and what happens Houston fixes him like they do with so many pitchers 2.70 ER in his final 10 starts he doubled the use of his slider reduced the use of his for seam and basically ditched his curveball became a different pitcher and now he ends up with another really good free agent contract with the angels it’s a fascinating situation they believe even though they finished last place in the AL West last year six games behind the A’s even though they were that bad that they are a team that can actually make up some ground this season obviously it would take Mike Trout being healthy but they’ve done some things this off season to kind of reinforce what they have and what they like about their team is this emerging young cor Zack Netto noan shuel Ben Joyce some other players as well Logan ohappy of course would be in that mix they still have some holes they’re going to likely address those holes but let’s look at what they’ve done thus far this off season because they have easily been the most aggressive team out there trying again to take a step forward you see the Kikuchi Deal 3 years 63 Travis darno after the Braves declined his option two years 12 million Kyle Hendricks we’ll see what he has left one year 2.5 million Kevin Newman the infielder one year 2.5 million and the trade for Jorge Sol who has owed two years 26 million what do all these guys have in common well if you want to generalize they’re all in their 30s and they’re all considered for the most part High character types every one of those players and the angels are trying to change their culture I wrote about this today in my notes column this has been something that they’ve been trying to do starting with the hiring of Ron Washington kind of change up the whole mix and they non-tendered Patrick Sandoval on Friday kind of a questionable move he’s a guy coming off Tommy John surgery probably won’t pitch this year but they had him under control for 26 and yet they decided that wasn’t worth the risk obviously they plowed the money into Kikuchi a better use of the money considering the Kikuchi is healthy but sand Deval is the latest of a number Angels players developed by the team that they’ve let go they’re kind of just bringing in a new wave here new Young talent and new veteran Talent where it all goes we’ll find out the angels are a team where it seems like they’re either spinning their wheels or trying something different every year and again so much will depend on trout to a lesser extent Anthony randone I don’t know that the angels are counting on him they still have their needs starting pitcher perhaps another one Bullpen for sure second or third base depending on where they want to play Luis Reno so the Angels can’t be done it’s always interesting to see how Arty Marino approaches each offseason as the owner this one he seems to be inclined to spend other offseasons not so much now the Kikuchi deal is in line with the Angel’s General philosophy of not giving long-term deals to starting pitchers they generally don’t go beyond three years and yet this is the most expensive deal that the GM Perry manasian has signed since taking over that position a few years back so the Angels seemingly Are Back In the Mix here to what end well no one seems to know we will not know until we see them play and again with the angels it’s a question of are you going forward or are you spinning your wheels all right now I want to talk about another team on the opposite Coast another team I wrote about this morning in the athletic the Atlanta Braves the Braves to this point have taken quite a different approach than the angels have they’ve been cutting costs they’ve been reducing salary trying to trim down their payroll in anticipation of doing some other things so the Braves are in a funny spot right now because they had some unexpected things happen one Ronald aunia Jr and Spencer Strider are likely not going to start the season with the team in fact not even likely it’s not going to happen with those two guys they will not be on the opening day roster in addition their setup man Joe Jimenez he’s a guy who might be out for the entire season so they’ve got these holes here an outfielder a starting pitcher and a setup man they’ve got to address these holes and do it in what they believe is a responsible way so let’s look at what they’ve done so far because these moves have been rather telling in terms of where they are going at least to this point they’re going to build up again but here’s what they’ve done so far traded Solair to the angels we talked about that that saved them 26 million over two years they restructured raldo Lopez and Aaron bum’s contracts the Lopez restructuring essentially saved them 3 million this season bummer as well saved them some money this season they’re trying to reduce that 2025 number decline Travis Dar no’s $8 million option winds up signing with the angels doesn’t everyone it seems and then the non- tenders of laurano and canning the Braves are a team that has exceeded the luxury tax threshold two straight years probably don’t want to do it three straight years teams never want to go over it over it and over it again but at the same time they’re not all that far below the threshold fangraphs has them at about 214 million in luxury tax payroll right now the threshold this year will be 241 million that leaves them 27 million to play with it’s going to be difficult for them to get under in my opinion if they’re going to sign quality players and it certainly looks like they’re going to sign one significant starting pitcher they have to Strider will not be ready to start the season freed could be gone Morton might retire then have at least one hole in that rotation so they’re an interesting club they’re a club that is going to do some things we know that Alex anopolis will certainly scan the Outfield Market try to come up with some pieces who can fit until aunia is coming back that Outfield Market is quite deep I listed a number of outfielders left-handed hitting options right-handed hitting options in my column today the Braves would prefer a left-handed hitting outfielder but really it doesn’t matter they want the best player and the longer they wait the more the bargain should emerge in that particular aspect of the market so the Braves are a team to watch certainly because so far they’ve gone backwards not forwards and their plan is to go forward again oh and one more thing if you want more on the Braves listen to hammer territory available on YouTube and wherever you get your podcast they are part of the foul territory [Music] Network time now for the inside dish the part of the show where I talk about something I’ve written maybe something I’ve said maybe some Trend in the game maybe something else entirely today I want to talk about a story actually a column I wrote back in September and it was about the Red Sox and their need for a right-handed hitter the headline why the Red Sox need to add a right-handed Masher in the off season I started the column with a scenario the scenario was move Des to First rapael Des they great third baseman to First Tristan passes you trade him and then you maybe you sign an Alex bregman that was the scenario I presented of course a bunch of people told me I was nuts that’s par for the course but here we are two months later and some of this seems to be taking hold at least the idea of moving Des to some other position rapael Des is a below average third baseman so what do you do with him well you could move him to First yes or you could d him and I don’t see them dhing a guy entering his age 28 season with 10 years 286 million left on his contract that would not seem to be a very productive thing to do I can see him playing first base even though his agent has come out and said my guy is a third baseman but you’re the Red Sox and you have this situation you have a need for more right-handed hitting and you have a desire and I believe this desire does exist in the organization to get Des Off Third Base where by every Advanced metric he is not good so do you trade casses well let’s look earlier in the off season at what Craig brlo their president of baseball operations said about that idea because he seemed to throw water on it he said I’m not sure where that’s coming from casses is a guy that we think has 40 home run potential he’s young and also has a great strike zone discipline and controls in ADV bat we’re excited he’s on our team okay sometimes Chief baseball officers presidents of baseball operations say things that later prove not to be true but that’s a pretty strong statement from breslo now could you trade masataka yosida well he’s got three years $54 million left you’re not going to get anything for him you’re going to probably have to eat most of the contract so I don’t know how that works but this remains an intriguing scenario the whole thing because of the Red Sox need to get more right-handed and I want to show you here just what I mean let’s look at how far they lean to the left left in terms of how their position players line up their left-handed hitters include Cassis Des jiren Duran Willer Abu and yida and beyond that three of their top four prospects three of the big four you hear a lot about these guys Roman Anthony Marcelo mayor and Kyle teal they’re left-handed hitters too now from the right side where are they well Tyler O’Neal is a free agent so he’s no longer there the right-handed hitters the guys who will play most Reg L Connor Wong Trevor story Rob ref Snider sedan rafhaela none of those guys except perhaps story is a middleof the order bat they’re very high on Christian Campbell I expect him to play a major role this season so ultimately they need to find more balance they need to find a Manny Ramirez to des’s David Ortiz they need that right left balance that all teams want and especially for a team playing at Fenway Park where you have the green monster hovering over over left field I don’t know how the Red Sox are going to figure all this out maybe they won’t figure it out this off season but ultimately de a third is not going to be a long-term thing I think it’s pretty safe to say that and the question then becomes okay how do you redo your team what Sean mccadam on Mass Live mentioned was the possibility of Des at first and Nolan arado becoming a trade piece that the Red Sox would acquire to play Third bregman can play Third third Willie adamus can play Third what do you do with casses well yes casses does have great potential he is a guy that if I were a Red Sox fan I’d be excited about even though he missed about four months last year he does have as Craig brlo said that 40 home run potential but what if and this is the suggestion I had back in that September column what if you could trade him for one of Seattle’s young starters Seattle needs a first baseman they’re not going to spend on Pete Alonzo or chrisan Walker in my estimation well here’s Tristan casses a minimum salary guy for another year or two and if you maybe give up a Brian woo or some other young starter who would be in my opinion the most likely one well that’s interesting and then if you’re the Red Sox you go out and sign Blake Snell or Mike’s fed you do some other things as well and bingo you are back in business I’m not saying this is going to happen I’m speculating but at the same time all of these scenarios are the kinds of scenarios that I would imagine I feel even stronger than that I would feel pretty certain that the Red Sox are disgusting I don’t know if it’s the specific names but the idea of moving Des off third yes that is something that I would think they are discussing the idea of getting more right-handed yes I would think that is something they are discussing this is a team that is looking rather interesting with what they might be going forward with the big four coming with the idea that they already have some pretty good young players in place and these others going to join them they’re in position to spend money they are eager to spend money they’ve been saying that all off season now they have to figure out how to make the pieces fit this entire conversation changes if the Red Sox happen to be the team that signs Juan SoDo now yes Juan stto is another left-handed hitter he is also the premier left-handed hitter along with SH Otani in the game today he’s a guy that if you get him you forget the rest of the plan and you kind of just figure it out from there so I don’t expect that to happen I still expect stto to be with one of the New York teams but if the Red Sox get SoDo well they’re going to have to do some other things mix it up in some other ways time now for grilling Ken let’s get to your questions first question comes from Austin Douglas who asks what are some reasonable infield options for Seattle to pursue in both free agency and the trade market also do they need to trade of their starting pitchers to make a serious upgrade to their lineup well Austin this is just what we were talking about and it’s a really good question because if you have the starting pitching that Seattle does you don’t want to trade it because let’s face it you trade one of these guys then maybe another one gets hurt next year and you’re back to where you started looking for starting pitching at the same time these guys have extreme value Gilbert and Kirby woo the whole group so if you’re the Mariners that’s one way to go you could possi POS trade one and I wouldn’t do it unless I was getting someone like a Tristan casses in return and I wouldn’t be trading Gilbert or Kirby either the other way to do it would be through free agency or trade of Another Kind this is a team that probably could use Alec B for the Phillies third baseman who has been out there and is quite available this is a team also that ideally could look at first base as well although I do believe that Alonzo or Walker will be out of their price range so there are guys like Carlos Santana Justin Turner Anthony Rizzo Paul goldshmid a whole host of first baseman free agents who are available would any of them be enough along with a new third baseman or second baseman I don’t believe so and that’s why the temptation to trade one of the starters for a bigger bat has to be there for the Mariners if they’re not going to spend big in free agency and that’s something I don’t anticipate them doing then the way to get the biggest possible return would be to give up something that you cover yourself and it will be difficult for them to do they don’t want to do it but if I’m the Mariners I at least have to listen all right the next question comes from Jason McIntosh who asks who will be next year’s breakout rookie good question and certainly there are a number of candidates Kobe Mayo of Baltimore is one if they can find a spot for him but the guy I’m going to choose is a guy who was up last year like Mayo Dylan Cruz of the Washington Nationals second pick of the 2023 draft a guy who has worlds of potential will get to play next year so he’ll get the opportunity and everyone thinks he’s going to be if not a star in this game certainly a very very good regular player so I’ll go with Dylan Cruz as my breakout rookie I’m sure as spring training approaches and as we get into spring training some more names will emerge and finally Mike Miller asks not counting Bryce who has the best hair in MLB great question and Bryce Harper yeah I would say he has what the players call the best flow that’s the term they use for hair flow but after Bryce I had to think about this a little bit I had to get on the internet a little bit kind of poke around but I’m gonna go with Toronto Blue Jay shortstop Bo bashet let’s take a look at BO oh yeah come on there’s some serious flow there I don’t know if it’s Bryce Harper quality but it’s pretty impressive so Bo bashet best hair in MLB outside of Bryce Harper at least in this man’s opinion want to thank everyone for their questions thank everyone for listening for
