and welcome everyone to our weekly AP Top 25 Poll reaction I’m Andy Catz uh here for Bleacher Report nc.com March madis mbb Fresh Off The Red eyee uh last weekend or this whatever yesterday I was covering the buzzer beater with Dylan Andrews uh banking it in for UCLA over Oregon the night before Kentucky Gonzaga Seattle for that USC Washington so here I am fresh off the plane to talk to you about the top 25 here um there is no question that there is a shakeup uh and I want to I want to remind people this because already already on my feed I get off the plane and as an example you know I got a guy right off the bat okay who is ripping me because classic cats he says classic cats that I dropped Oregon in my poll let alone you know that the Ducks would get dropped first of all I was there saw it with my own eyes I’m still high on the Ducks as a potential Big 10 title team but they really escaped LA with USC they did not play well uh until the last couple minutes against UCLA they lose at home so I want to again say that everyone handles the AP Top 25 Poll or their own poll or their own rankings a little bit different in the subjective way first off remember this is just a snapshot and it’s a bit of a a beauty contest if you will okay um the poll is how you’re playing from one week to the next when we do the bracket and the seedings that’s different that’s your body of work that’s what have you accomplished overall who have you played who have you beaten where did you play them where did you beat them so let’s not get all worked up about where teams are in this poll uh to your liking for example Yukon as you see there they didn’t deserve to be ranked last week at 25 they do now because of what they did this past week where they knocked off Baylor at home I was there and they go down to Texas on Sunday and win so yes they are deserving of it so let’s start at the Top Tennessee uh Tennessee should be the number one team of the country for this week Rick Barnes has really done a remarkable job he loses Dalton connect who’s doing very well for the Lakers uh and yet Chaz laner is just absolutely just tearing it up for the volunteers years 8-0 average an 83 game they’re defending well um look what they’re shooting overall 52% first in the NCAA um just all their numbers all their metrics are one seed like Auburn and this is how I had it too I had it one two Tennessee Auburn in fact I had it exactly this way I had Tennessee Auburn IA State I had Duke I dropped Duke a little bit um I had him at six here there at four but Auburn should not be penalized for losing late at Duke very few people ever go into Cameron I know Arizona did it last year uh but Auburn was the best team of the country I saw in Maui they have to come back and play a Duke in the SEC ACC challenge they’re eight- one they follow that up with a win over Richmond Iowa state had a great win earlier in the week Over Marquette Auburn and Iowa State played in Maui Auburn won on a Janai broom tippen um the way Kansas is playing right now I think Iowa State You could argue is the favorite in the Big 12 the SEC is another matter the SEC Tennessee Auburn Kentucky at five uh Kentucky split the week where they went to Clemson you see Clemson at 16 uh Clemson beats Kentucky hands him their first loss and then they got to go from to um Seattle they lose Lamont Butler because he he gets hurt in the Clemson game I think he’s arguably the I mean no breaking news here he’s their best playmaker so he doesn’t even play I didn’t think the C the the the ker CA loss no offense to him but I didn’t think that would hurt them as much he goes down with a foot injury he’s out indefinitely Jackson Robinson plays the last eight minutes at the point and was Stellar uh at that position and Kentucky ball moved defensively they were better kind of shut down Mard frustrated EK and they get an overtime win over over Gonzaga in Seattle it was a great atmosphere um just I feel pretty fortunate that I was able to see that game the next day you know the the back and forth Jackson Shell stads uh three-pointer to put Oregon up and then Dylan Andrews uh finishes it off so Duke at four Cooper flat at a great game against Auburn I got no issue with that Marquette at six okay what’s their loss their loss was to Iowa State in Hilton who goes into Hilton win not many teams nine and one they are averaging 83 game cam Jones had 32 on Saturday in a win over number 20 Wisconsin uh I’m going to get to where I think some of these teams they should be in or not but at the top of this here no problems Marquette at six they’re the best team in the Big East right now see if that holds but cam Jones cam Jones and Janai broom and Cooper flag those three players today are your first team all-americans who are the other two we wait and see maybe it’s Chaz lanir from from Tennessee um let’s take a wait and see attitude here who would be that fourth and fifth players Alabama at seven they go into Carolina and actually Rock the tar Hills no problem there kaga at eight again fine with that you lose an overtime Monster game coming up on Saturday which we’ll get to Gonzaga Yukon in the garden I’ll be there Saturday night Florida flying way under the radar at number nine undefeated uh waiting for them to play a high level game that’s coming up in the next two weeks Kansas at 10 so Kansas lost at kraton and lost at Missouri um I dropped them to 12 you know my top 10 was Tennessee Auburn Iowa State Marquette Kentucky Duke Alabama Clemson Florida Michigan Purdue Kansas that was my top 12 so Purdue at 11 held on to beat Mar Maryland after losing at Penn State we’ll get to them in a moment so Oregon at 12 I dropped Oregon to 17 um they haven’t played well outside of that Alabama game they’ve been down in and Dana alond will tell you this told me this they have not played as well yet they’ve been kind of Lucky um but they got a huge seal I mean their ceiling is way up here but they’ve got to start better so five of their first 10 games games they’ve trailed at the half including at home to Portland they’ve CL climbed out of these holes um and they you know it’s unfortunate that there was a second left on the clock and Andrews hits the shot Oklahoma 13 no problem there they’re undefeated Michigan at 14 I had them a little higher Wolverines get two wins in the Big 10 they win at Wisconsin massive win and they beat Iowa at home Houston at 15 kind of wrestled where to put the Cougars okay the Cougars don’t have a high-profile win yet so you know where I put Houston uh I D I dropped them second week in a row and I know that’s going to cause some issues with people 15 and you don’t even rank them but look at Houston okay Houston lost to Auburn obviously a very good team if you look at what Houston did in um Las Vegas at the Players era event so Houston loses to Alabama loses to San dieo State beats Notre Dame so the games and they just beat Butler at home good win but I’m not convinced Butler’s an nc8 team so they’ve beaten notame and Butler those are their two sort of name wins but right now I don’t think they’ve got a win against the field they they missed on Auburn Alabama and San Diego State those three schools I think will be in the tournament not convinced Notre Dame or Butler will Clemson at 16 so I had Clemson as I said in my top 10 at eight Clemson 9 And1 Brad manell doing a phenomenal job lead eight last year Ian shefflin had 32 rebounds in two games he had 20 against Kentucky Chase Hunter has played so well good one-two punch for the Tigers they um beat Kentucky then they beat a struggling Miami team but it was on the road first ACC game so right now the two best teams in the ACC are the two teams on your screen that are ranked Duke and Clemson and I think that’s going to hold uh North Carolina out of the pole tar heels lost at home to Alabama um I’ll see them up against UCLA a week from Saturday at the guard in the CBS Sports classic they got work to do um Texas A&M beat Texas Tech old rival uh they’re just going to be a team that’s going to sort of hover in and out of the top 25 I think Buzz Williams has a crew led by Taylor that is going to be in the nway tournament um just a solid team not going to wow you but they’re going to be there at the end all right there’s Yukon so Yukon wild swings they’re ranked they go 03 and Maui they’re out of my poll they go to 25 they beat Baylor without Alex caraban he comes back leads him scoring and they win at Texas so I had them at 13 here they are at 18 up from 25 in the poll no problem there Yukon plays Gonzaga I’ll be there Saturday night at Madison Square Garden Old Miss at 19 uh their one loss was to Purdue late in San Diego uh and you know Chris Beard’s doing a great job they beat Louisville on the road and you know outside of that Purdue game they’re sort of just cruising all right now Wisconsin they’ve hit a bit of a rough rough patch so I dropped the Badgers significantly um to 28 they’ve lost to Michigan and a Marquette their next game is going to be Illinois on the road so pretty good chance they’re going to lose three in a row uh if they win that game flip the script but uh they could be 0 and2 in the Big 10 I think they’re gonna be fine but this just shows you the gauntlet of the schedule they’ve got so I would have dropped them no shame in who they lost to but they lost two in a row Michigan State kind of the opp oppos it now they had a softer uh opening to The Big 10 season with playing Minnesota and Nebraska but they won them both 21 their game against Nebraska was probably their best game of the season so I’m high in the Spartans I had them ranked as well like I like him at 21 um I put him at 15 Cincinnati I dropped they got a big game coming up against Xavier they don’t have a quality win yet suffered their first loss to Villanova which have been struggling I know was on the road out San Diego State beat rival San Diego um they’re 26 so I had them just outside playing well right now I think they’re them and Utah state of the two teams to beat in the mount West um there’s a question here right off the bat about Memphis I still really like the Tigers why did I drop them yes I know they beat Yukon and Michigan State in Maui and they beat Missouri to start the season that Arkansas State home loss though that is a red flag so gotta see what happens here but it’s a bad loss bad loss they play Clemson next you turn around you beat Clemson you’re right back in it so it’s just like Yukon you’re swinging Memphis is fine today for the N tournament but with the ranking it’s a bad loss UCLA since committing 21 turnovers against New Mexico to start the season well second game they beat Ryder first uh the Bruins are playing Wild Dylan Andrews uh um Tyler uh bido bido um Kobe Johnson was making some shots they are starting to find themselves defensively is never an issue with them I thought sebas Mack uh sky Clark I mean everyone sort of played well uh when they needed to um Eric Daly that was the other name I’m sorry just dra blank he had a great game against Oregon so UCLA in there in the top 25 I think they should be I am in at 14 and then Mississippi State I should have included Mississippi State last week after they lost that first game in the ACC SEC challenge they absolutely blitzed pit back in where they should be it’s a quality team um so I’m back I’m back ranking them where’ I have them I had [Music] them at 31 it’s not in the 25 but I had them at least they were in my rankings teams that weren’t listed that I had uh I had okl uh excuse me I had Illinois I didn’t completely remove them for the one overtime loss at Northwestern Penn State Michigan Penn State and Maryland are the three surprise teams in the Big 10 Penn State beats Purdue they should be in there Maryland almost got Purdue crushed Ohio State they should be in there I put Missouri in there at 24 they went 0 and8 in the SEC last season their one loss so far is to Memphis it beat Kansas and then Arizona State I have them in there uh sundevils beat St Mary’s their only blemish was early in the season at Gaga other teams to highlight I put kraton back in after they beat Kansas I still like Dayton massive game count up against Marquette um Drake’s undefeated West Virginia uh remember they had that Gonzaga win St Mary’s Utah State’s undefeated Georgia and Rhode Island Archie Miller in the 810 2.0 for him success at Dayton didn’t go as well as in Indiana now at U 9 and0 the Rams beat their rival Providence College keep an eye out for them um before we get to a couple of questions let’s shift to my national team of the week kind of just teased them right there right at the beginning of our session well first our player of the week Tomar Bates former Indiana player now Missouri so two Indiana two missou 29 in that win over Kansas he’s a senior Difference Maker for Dennis gates at Missouri team of the week new number one Tennessee oh excuse me Clemson sorry Clemson is my team of the week after beating Kentucky and Miami so there’s your team of the week um and then you see some stats on tomarrow bats to your right there uh Clemson 9 And1 uh just good numbers all across the board so I tease Saturday Okay Saturday there’s no college football playoff they’re taking a week off it’s an unbelievable game unbelievable day so you could cherry pick a lot of these different ones Louisville at Kentucky it’s now more relevant because Louisville under Pat Kel even though they’ve got some injuries they’re competitive again okay uh and hold that on the screen there to the right because it’s extending off this graphic Xavier Cincinnati always an epic battle in the Queen City um you’ve got the bear cats who need a high-profile uh Victory Xavier went down to TCU and almost won the game but couldn’t so both schools are looking for a significant win Tennessee at Illinois I mean that’s going to be a absolute battle um ‘s got multiple Ros ivich yakis Riley um they’re going to only get better Gonzaga Yukon at the Garden uh Yukon blitzed Gonzaga in Seattle last year beat him in the tournament the year before so a little revenge for the zags UCLA Arizona that game’s in Phoenix uh longtime Pack 12 rivalry good that they’re continuing to play it but UCLA now is the momentum Arizona needs a quality win there’s that Memphis at Clemy game takes on even more importance for Memphis after losing AR Arkansas State at home here’s a really dangerous game Marquette at Dayton for Marquette Dayton which got that Yukon win which is gonna have great shelf life if they could beat Marquette at home they’re going to be really strong as a potential at large if they don’t win the A10 Oklahoma Oklahoma State I love the fact they’re still playing bedum now that Oklahoma’s in the SEC Oklahoma State still in the Big 12 uh Steve lot got uh the Cowboys the clinching win in the Big 12 Big E Challenge on Sunday at seatan Hall so they won that challenge 65 all right Arizona state Florida in Phoenix um again huge game I think for both Florida’s ranked Arizona State’s not Arizona State wins that game they better be ranked on a week from today kraton at Alabama last year played a crazy good game in Omaha Alabama schedule is just absolutely ridiculous kraton’s healthier now playing better basketball but then I added four more Ohio State Auburn in Atlanta um that’s a game that I definitely think uh Ohio State needs to show well they need a game like this to I mean they can steal this one massive for them Texas A&M verse Purdue that games in Indianapolis again let see where the agies are you favor puring that NC State at Kansas Kansas is reeling loses two in a row NC State needs a marquee win is Kansas ripe to be beaten we’ll see and then Wisconsin Butler in Indianapolis the Badgers will be coming off that Illinois road game will they be on a three three game slide Butler lost badly at Houston but it’s understandable still they’re going to need a quality win so that’s 14 highlevel games just on Saturday no college football playoff all right missou and Maryland deserve to be in I agree whereas Penn State not there they should be they beat Purdue kesan Gilbert allamerican is he first teamer yet I don’t know he’s definitely going to I think he is an All-American which team he’s on we’ll see Chaz lanir he might be that fourth player I said Janai broom Cooper flag and cam Jones uh Marquette would beat Kenucky if they played where’s the game who do I got winning the sec I’m going to go with auburn originally had Alabama so I’m gonna go with auburn over Tennessee why does San die State deserve to be ranked um where did I have San state so I had San State at 26 just outside so I can see that um Michigan State ceiling top three in the Big 10 kraton definitely earned one maybe next week if they beat bam for sure B Auburn top five matchup yes opinion on Oklahoma uh Porter moer has got his best team there I’m glad the administration was patient with him and he’s had a smooth transition with the SEC so far hardest Kentucky drop well they lost to Clemson that’s why Clemson should be ranked our I agree my top game this week is Louisville Kentucky just because of the Rivalry um and I think Kentucky fans are desperate to see their team they’ve been on the road so much I really like this Duke team they’re young and we’ll see if that is an issue late in the season Georg again kind of flying under the radar they’re going to be a middle of the- pack um SEC team but I think they’ll get in Tennessee strength is schedule again um they’re another one of these schools that let’s see here so they got you know they they didn’t get I mean Virginia isn’t what they should have been same Louisville are better but not I mean these sound good but neither one of those teams is g to be the end s my tournament the Balor win hopefully will hold up for them Syracuse does nothing for them but they won it uh they play Miami before Illinois in the Jimmy ve Miami is terrible right now so it’s kind of crazy the Illinois game may only be their second non-conference game against a team that I think will be in the field it’s kind of wild but they’re playing the schedule well Drake Ben MCC I’ve talked about him on this um doing a phenomenal job one championships at the D2 Level Kentucky is a contender not a pretender West Virginia I have him in my power 37 good win over Georgetown even though georgetown’s not playing really well and the ACC is this bad I don’t think they’re going to get more than four I don’t think Wisconsin can win the Big 10 Dusty May is he the coach of the year well he’s certainly uh one of the coach of the year candidates no question and I think you will be at the end um you know the question was should Duke be top five so they’re at four um I had them at six I don’t think it really matters yeah I mean they’re when they’re good they’re good why is Duke ahead of Kentucky it’s all for what have you done for me lately so that game was three weeks ago since then in the shortterm Duke beat Auburn Kentucky lost to Clemson that’s why that stuff happens um again Duke played a better schedule than Kentucky so I wouldn’t be shocked um if Duke’s ultimate metric is higher than Kentucky now it’ll it’ll flip when conference play starts because Kentucky in the Duke in the ACC all those SEC teams that are in this top 10 they’re going to have higher uh net rankings at least they should metric ranking rankings than teams in the Big East Big 10 maybe the Big 12 uh because that top group of the SEC is just so loaded and they’re just going to be playing each other and beating each other up so all right so that’s c um Saturday if you’re a hoop junkie like me I’ll be watching the games before I’m at the Garden uh hopefully I see a great one again with kaga and Yukon but it’s what a what a
