we just witnessed a special performance from slots men at anfield and the score line says 2-n but this was nothing short of utter domination and the XG stats are just a hint of that there’s loads to get into so let’s not waste any time and start with Liverpool in possession in many ways slot flipped the script on Guardiola as he was able to consistently take advantage of both qualitative and quantitative overloads and it all began when Liverpool were deep on the ball often from goal kicks they set up traditionally with a deep back four and this is where they began to con consistently take advantage of the city shape Holland’s main task was to immediately tie up Van djk which makes sense because as I covered in my last newsletter linked below when looking at Liverpool versus Real Madrid not cutting out van djk was pivotal to Ra’s loss as they failed to slow down Liverpool’s buildup Testament to slot’s adaptability even when harand did cut out van djk as he had less touches than Gomez which is rare slot had a plan B which was just as deadly foden’s role was initially to cut out the deepest pivot grenberg using his cover Shadow whilst Matas Nunes picked up Alexander Arnold and city were trying to bait the pass into Gomez and this was their press trigger with either foden or Nunes then joining the Press when it was Nunes creeping from out to in this allowed Trent Alexander Arnold to push up and with Salah pinning ake at left back they would now have a two versus one in these regions allowing the keeper to find a man it was difficult for City to drag across a midfielder for example because in these scenarios there were man to man in the Midfield and bringing a man across could lead to an overload in the [Music] center but the biggest Factor was this man here who is already perhaps the greatest right winger in premier league history and is now changing what we think of when we talk about this usually when discussing a Target man we think of a tall bulky Center forward with the ability to bring the ball down and bring people into the game while Salah doesn’t fit that physical description but he is able to fill the same role receiving long balls again and again and either bringing the ball down effortlessly or turning his fallback and making the run in behind and that changes the dynamic completely because when Nunes was on Trent and we saw foden be the presser there were loads of times when he was able to press Gomez and keep graen Burke in his cover Shadow so the Liverpool midfielder now wasn’t a passing option and that was the ideal scenario for City [Music] but Liverpool was still extremely confident in playing long to Salah to beat that press knowing he would be able to receive that longer ball and maybe even turn and begin running at the center backs or directly at goal and now with the city defense coming across to try and cover it would open up potential space on the left wing but the variety in Liverpool’s buildup was only just beginning because we need to talk about the center forward position lewi Diaz and Cody gako were consistently rotating but their Mobility was key for either of them as when they were Central they both operated as Force nin so in these scenarios if they wanted to be in an even better position from the Deb buildup the center forward would come across to create a two versus one out wide and try and receive the second ball even though Salah had already been winning the 1 v1s pep of course wasn’t just going to let his man consistently get overloaded so naturally aangi would be drawn into these positions as he was trying to nullify the threat of that man dropping deeper this did have its successes but it also increased the danger now because there was a huge hole in the defense and the distance between AK and Diaz would be huge and guess who was ready to take complete advantage of that space time and time again we would see Liverpool then play the long pass into Salah running in behind as a result getting the Reds into plenty of menacing situations or alternatively with AK being pinned back by Salah now there was potentially room for the false nine to receive in this space here but what was interesting for Liverpool is it wasn’t just about the flanks they had plenty of Success Through The Heart of the pitch particularly when foden was pressing Gomez because if he did not get his angle exactly right to cover the pivot now Gan and Bernardo were both pressing high and Liverpool now had the three versus two with the midfielder possibly even more because gakpo and Diaz were happy to come deep or run in behind major danger it meant either a midfielder could turn and begin running at the defense with plenty of teammates ahead of him or one or both center backs would be lured into the Trap higher up the pitch and we once again saw Salah and the left Winger getting in behind consistently it was a beautiful inp possession performance from the Reds but City in possession were a fascinating tale of two halves with some good and some bad but the end result was a complete contrast with Liverpool strengths from the deep buildup City shifted into an asymmetric 3232 with nunas remaining wide left and a Ki moving into the pivot position alongside gundan the goal of this was completely clear to create a huge Midfield overload against Liverpool with a potential five versus three Advantage if the Reds stayed in the default positions but Liverpool’s counter to this was fascinating they look to stop themselves from being overloaded in the Midfield by removing one of their midfielders so boss pushed into the front line so that Liverpool were in a 4 to four the key was that front four was super narrow meaning the overloads here did not matter if City could not get the ball into that region to begin with and this was surprisingly effective with not much of City’s play at all coming through the center despite the shape but on the occasion city were able to penetrate that first line it was a mixed bag as at times they could overwhelm the Liverpool pivots when they were on the ball and able to find Lewis or foden between the lines but often aangi just made a good press Target when receiving with Liverpool often using a pass into him as the trigger to go and win the ball back but one of the reasons most of City’s attacks came down the left is ilkai gundan identifying that there was barely any room to receive in the center we saw him begin to move into this left back Zone to receive the pass especially when Salah was drawn into the press this now gave the citizens options graen Burke was caught in two minds as if he pushed out now foden was in a lot more space to receive between the lines and mallister was two versus one down or if he held his position now there was a potential two versus one wide overload but we must talk about the biggest issue with City’s attack which when up the pitch in the first half looked like this where Liverpool looked absolutely lethal down the flanks in the first half City had essentially zero wide threat down the right Walker was tucked in as a third Center back and Lewis was playing as an attacking midfielder meaning there was literally no threat down the right so Robertson could afford to defend super narrow with gakpo also tucking in to help ease the Midfield overload down the left it was Nunes wide who’s simply not a Winger so when he was 1 V one against Trent he did not have the pace or trickery to get past him or put in any dangerous crosses and even when he was played into dangerous positions that a Winger would have loved nunas did not have that goal scoring Instinct Pep’s second half changes showed that he knew this needed to be fixed initially it was by releasing Walker who would look to take advantage of Robinson’s super narrow position and he got into some great positions but when it comes to attacking Walker again poses zero threat out wide the difference when U and saino came on was apparent as city looked much more threatening Trent went from looking extremely comfortable defensively only getting dribble pass once in the first 57 minutes to getting beaten five times by dku in the 16 minutes they shared the pitch this increased threat meant that now Liverpool had to drag more and more men across the pitch to cover up defensively against dku and now savena on the far side actually provided genuine width so now City had the option for the switch and looked much more dangerous in attack with this balanced shape but it was too little too late a huge win for Liverpool who are now 11 points clear of city but what did you make of the match tactically speaking in this encounter I felt the score line did not reflect what was on the pitch slot’s setup was near perfect meaning he earns a nine while pep earns a 2.5 but drop your ratings down below and if you do want to check out that in-depth newsletter looking at slot’s masterclass against
