[Music] it’s funny because non-black folks don’t think about it but we all do ask any black or brown person the first thing we do when we walk into a hockey arena is clock to see if there’s any other faces that look like ours Lo girl Hockey Club is like a home to me and it’s really help me my family financially cuz Mom she looks like me she’s good and she’s a really good hockey player that’s what I want to be like I think like just sya and all the other black girls in general in hockey they’re showing example to everyone else you know it doesn’t matter your race it doesn’t matter your skin color the texture of your hair like it doesn’t affect anything you’re still a great hockey player representation is incredibly important for these girls to see faces hair bodies that look like theirs on the eyes it is everything to them it is a dream walking in front of them [Music] it’s time for a new era in sport one that honors the brave I stepped on the ice became the first black player to play in the National Hockey League comes up over the M Poli line the Bold when he did decide to come out and make it public I think I could speak for all of us we were just so proud of him herb start at the first hockey school that included all kids the people that look different let’s go this is a series about individuals and organizations who are determined to redefine hockey culture and to inspire a new and diverse generation of hockey fans that’s what this millon H does it brings us together 1 2 we’ve been talking about this day for years and so the fact that we’re here it’s pretty Monumental the past president future of women’s hockey meet right here my name is s tinker and this is breaking down barriers if only she rested for a long time or relaxed for a long time no no you’re close you’re close tell me I don’t know it’s like um if only um if really she stayed longer to do rest days only she oh like at inv to me I don’t know that bir invited all of his family well I started off when I was younger probably like five or six I actually started off as a goalie I well I like getting Puck shot at me honestly it’s it’s it’s entertaining it’s like the thrill I love being you know being able to watch the whole play like standing in the back of the net I get to see the game like I’m watching it and being a part of it so I was like this is my place I’m going to stay here she she loves hockey ever since she started playing it’s always like Mom when’s my next game when’s the next practice she’s always looking forward to it because she loves being on the ice on theide the sauce in the pot with the pasta and put the chicken in and put the peppers and put everything in the pot together yeah probably half the I’ll just pour when I added some tomato sauce definitely having a child’s a black child you know I wanted to make sure it’s something that they were comfortable in and she she seemed to do okay with it you know there are the few people that look and question and wonder you know is this person in the right spot are they here to play hockey but she just kept pushing through and went out and did her job and that was it I thought I had one piece left you want more you can go get more no you trying to get chicken first like he does his Peppers when I was at Hockey Camp people were really interested in like oh the color of my skin like how my hair was so curly you know wanting to touch it and everything and they were like oh you know how do you get it curly like that but I didn’t really think anything of it I was like oh you know maybe they’re just interested you know it’s a bit different but I realized you know they’re pointing out like my differen is that I was different compared to them cuz we initially um heard about black R Hockey Club the American organization I think it was through I just saw an ad on social media and then kind of looked into it more and read about it and kind of figured this was something that I think Michael would benefit from so that has impacted me in a very positive way Sora is really nice she’s she’s like one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met she’s a great example especially for the younger girls me as well I’ve looked up to her her hockey career where she’s been where she’s at right now and I’m like you know that’s where I want to be that’s what I want to do I founded black girl hoe Club Canada in 2022 a nonprofit organization that focuses on making hockey more inclusive for black women by providing mentorship financial aid and scholarship opportunities as well as various community events hi how’s it going this is pretty exciting yes it is a little intruction ones I’m your well I think just watching um you know there was many many moments where I would just be by myself as a a young girl but for for black girl hockey players there was none there’s still very few so if somebody didn’t like me because of the color of my skin they would just hit me you know and and get it out of their system or you know of course they would call me they would call me um you know whatever I really think that the black girl Hockey Club is uh is important uh for young uh black girls to you know be able to engage with other girls like themselves and and create a a network and uh be able to talk to each other and share stories share great things and share some things that you know may have happened to them and how they handled it exh l comes up towards the sky and stepping through placing it on the mat so inhale from here and on the exhale we’re just moving our hips forward reaching with our fingertips so the black girl Hockey Club has benefited us and helped us in so many ways Michael has been a recipient of a scholarship and an equipment sponsorship or scholarship so she’s actually gotten financial assistance for hockey which has greatly helped us as a family and soroya was there she was there for everything she took Michaela’s shopping the two of them went out and bought the equipment and also being part of the group all of us at black girl Hockey Club Canada take that mission to heart we will continue to work on preventing exclusion in hockey based on race gender or sexuality we will create and provide space for young bipac women to thrive in the face of these challenges by supporting the creation of community and networking opportunities mentorship and representation within the hockey Community Michaela comes to me and says mom what can I do to wash my hair what products can I use I’m like I can’t help you call sya so seeing sya on the ice someone Michaela looks like gives Michaela that incentive to keep playing and and makes her want to be like s when she gets older she goes mom she looks like me she’s good and she’s a really good hockey player that’s what I want to be like I am proud to bring black girl Hockey Club to Canada and to create meaningful change in the sport thank you for your dedication and the Excellence you bring every day on behalf of Renee and the rest of our team we thank you for coming today to our open skate and I look forward to speaking with every one of you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] right now we’re hosting um a future stars girls Clinic with black girl Hockey Club Tonto Maple and hockey quality and we are celebrating not only the diversity that exists in chono the diversity that exists in the game of hockey but as we can see here the Elite Talent and diversity that exists in the girls and the women’s game you know I was was I I played in the my rookie here in the NHL before I my first black teammate you know so the fact that these girls out here are able to see you know from Asian indigenous black girls skaing together uh different racial ice coaches on the ice with them um alumni here in Sephora as well we’re showing that we’ve been a part of this game forever and it sometimes uh can be a lowly Place hockey can when when you’re a racialized individual what black girl Hockey Club is able to do for youth across our city across our country on the other side of the Border as well in the US the scholarships they can provide the mentorship they can provide and the safety and comfort that can be provided within the game of hockney it’s it’s Unique to be able to find that camaraderie within something and to find that like mindedness at the same time it’s very special [Music] [Applause] yeah we see want but I oh yeah I like it I like it I guess I still got it I still got [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it nice Saab you know black girl Hockey Club was really a way for me to find black girl friends interested in hockey to see BGC expand from the US into Canada under the leadership of soroya Tinker has just been really amazing uh because hockey is Canada’s game and so having bhc Canada uh embedded in the Toronto and the GTA Community is incredibly important uh for these young girls to have a a base and a foundation in the sport because hockey culture is not always welcoming to black women and bhc is that safe space for these girls and their families and their friends and that’s that’s what I wanted from the beginning it’s funny because um non-black folks don’t think about it but we all do ask any black or brown person the first thing we do when we walk into a hockey arena is clock to see if there’s any other faces that look like ours oh yeah you know I think it’s really important that uh when you walk in the dressing room that you see other people that look like you and um talk like you and and you know listen to the same music and you know eat the same food and uh uh but at the end of the day you’re all in that dress room because of one thing and that’s cuz you enjoy playing hockey [Applause] how you doing good you good how was the drivein uh it wasn’t that bad we were at to college okay okay you excited to go to the game yeah it should be good it should be a good game yeah 3v3 hockey is always better to watch it’ll be quick too yeah hopefully physical get some hits in there TI to Black thr Hockey Club is like I would say it’s honestly home like I’ve made so of these friends that look like me like s has done so much for me she’s actually giv me this and it’s really helped me my family financially and the Black Earth Hawks love is so fun and [Music] amazing they’re literally all like models for me in the future I want to be like most of them though in the and just work hard in hockey I know they’re there to support me and there’s other people color that I know that went far so I could go far as well it’s amazing cuz I never thought it would actually go this far but now I have somewhere to reach a goal higher than I was expecting [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] where time [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there are only four black players in the pwhl in February the league in partnership with Sarah nurse and black R Hockey Club Canada launched nursy night an opportunity for black girl Hockey Club Canada members to cheer on pwhl Toronto and spend time with Sarah nurse after the games [Applause] [Music] [Applause] number so we’re here from Halifax Nova Scotia uh my daughter Ariel Lord we have come here uh we’ve been connected to black girl Hockey Club uh as soon as we found it looking for a way to connect her to other black girls playing hockey and and soroya Tinker from the beginning has been an incredible Mentor it means so much I think to be surrounded by other black girl hockey players to see yourself and people like sya and Sarah nurse to see sya on on air and Sarah nurse for nursing night the first ever nursing night I mean um Ariel I think is just over the moon about being here and being surrounded with other black girl hockey players and sort of a dream come true Sarah has been the only woman playing highlevel hockey for years years and years and so I know for her it’s exciting to have these other girls in that space with her because it shows that things are shifting and things are changing and these young girls that are getting BJC scholarships and now playing college hockey will one day you know hopefully get to the level that they want to be whether it is you know uh Olympic hockey or professional women’s hockey they have got they’ve got options now which they didn’t have a couple years ago and I love it for them yeah I think for me what I really aim to do with hockey and sport is make it as accessible and as inclusive as possible and so nursing night really was a touch point that honestly just started with I want to invite girls to professional women’s hockey games and it turned into something huge it turned into you know a $50,000 donation to black girl Hockey Club Canada but it really all started because I wanted girls to have the opportunity to Watch professional hockey because I didn’t have that opportunity forward number 20 Sarah representation is incredibly important for these girls to see faces hair bodies that look like theirs on the eyes it is everything to them it is a dream walking in front of them [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yeah sometimes you get judged or you know looked at differently based off of how you look but I don’t think that should matter at all because you know hockey is hockey it doesn’t matter if you’re a girl if you’re a guy you know whatever everything should be included yeah well I mean we’ve grown so much I don’t even think I realized how many black women loved the sport of hockey and would want to be involved in black girl Hockey Club so obviously I knew it would be big on the Canadian side but at the same time I think just being able to provide the girls with a community that they can go to just these super fun events that they can go and watch pwhl games or just get together as friends I think has been the most exciting piece of it is just seeing the community being built and all of their friendships being formed hey hi how are you I’m good how are you good nice thank you um get those I wonder yeah did they break did you break them in easily yeah yeah they were they’re really long too I didn’t realize but it covers like my complete five fall we like extra big so you don’t have to you know yeah so know into them yeah they’re actually really good no and I’m getting comments like oh you know what matches your matches your jersey really well goes with the sharks colors and what about what we did we get you a glove and a blocker too or was it just a blocker uh I think it was just a blocker yeah how’s the blocker it’s good good it’s good yeah I think like just sya and all the other black girls in general in hockey they’re showing example to everyone else you know it doesn’t matter you’re race it doesn’t matter your skin color the texture of your hair like it doesn’t affect anything you’re still a great hockey player you can do everything else everyone else [Applause] [Music] [Applause] can yeah I I already see you know the landscape changing a little bit and some of the young black girls who are so good at hockey like I was shook I was like I was not this good at your age and so it’s exciting because I’m looking at these young girls and I’m like wow you have the opportunity to do NCAA to do use for it to do professional women’s hockey one day and so it makes me really excited it’s cool to be able to see that um and knowing that you know we’re leaving a legacy and leaving the sport in a better place so tow drag to start we’re going to come up I have ready so I’m tow draging here put it [Applause] through so you’re here you’re just pushing the puck push the puck put it through lift your sck it it’s so it’s so fun to watch them have a good time um I know a lot of the time when I was their age I wasn’t having the best time playing so to see them actually having fun and being welcomed on their team and you having black girl Hockey Club to come to is is everything I dreamed of you know it doesn’t really matter whether you’re black white or polka dot um there’s always going to be discrimination and and there’s always going to be people that are in charge that are making decisions um based on on biasness but what you can always the only thing that you can change is from within yourself and that’s to make sure that they can’t say no that you are a deserving athlete and deserve to be here and you make it impossible I know that that’s was always my philosophy is just make it impossible for them to say no [Applause] [Music] I hope Michaela goes as far as she wants to go I would love for her to keep playing until she physically can no longer play um because she’s so happy when she’s on the [Music] ice what advice would you give to Young hockey players who might be watching might be watching your story right now I would tell them to never give up on your dreams just keep doing what you’re doing you’re an amazing person don’t let anybody tell you otherwise don’t let people judge you or base you off of certain things you have the same abilities as other people and you can do the best you can [Music] ahahahahahahahahah [Music]
