first big signing of the MLB off season starting pitcher Blake Snell who opted out of his final year with the Giants agrees to a 5-year $182 million deal with the defending Champion LA Dodgers the two-time sa young winner went 5 and3 with a 3.12 erra over 20 starts this past season with the Giants after signing late in spring training his season included a no- hitter in August against the Reds his first and only complete game of his career and for more welcome to CBS Sports MLB Insider Jim Bowden and Jim look Blake’s not of the Dodgers pretty good deal for them what more can you tell us about how this deal got done yeah look the Dodgers really have been focusing on trying to improve that starting pitching they had so many questions last year so many injuries and they love what they saw with Blake Snell down the stretch remember his last 14 starts he posted a 1.23 erra that was the best in baseball over that time span and look the year before he won the Sai Young and one thing we know is when he’s healthy he’s Domin he’s already won two sa young Awards one in the American League one in the National League and so they’re really happy about him because even though only twice in his career has he pitched more than 130 Innings only twice in nine years they don’t mind because when they get their pitchers they save them for October they don’t mind how many innings you go in the regular season they’re going to take care of their arms and so to know that they have Snell and Otani and Glau coming back next year they feel like they’re going to have one of the best starting rotations in baseball now for Snell what was significant is the Boris Corporation was able to negotiate a deal with an average annual value of 36.4 million why is that significant well Garrett Cole had the record previously at 36 million so it shatters that the contract has no opt outs it’s got a $52 million signing bonus and there are deferrals so we don’t know the net present value of the deal yet but this as you mentioned the first big free agent deal of this off season so far sometimes you bet on yourself and it pays off right that’s that’s sometimes that that’s what happens as you mentioned the Dodgers had seven starting pitchers on the injured list this past season eight if you include sh Otani Snell trying to race that narrative that he’s only a five and dive G five and dive guy uh Jim what do you think what do you think of the fit here for Snell to the Dodgers yeah look I I think it’s a a great fit because you know I think when you’re talking Otani Yamamoto Snell Glau we’ll see if they’re able to bring Walker bu back or not of course he’s a free agent as well they’re going to get Clayton Kershaw back from injury and they’re hoping to get Tony gonin back and Dustin may back and they’re hoping that Bobby Miller develops but the one thing that Andrew fredman and Brandon goes who run the baseball operations learned this year you never get enough pitching and also when you’re preparing for Otani remember he likes to pitch on a six-man rotation and so the Dodgers know they got to get as much depth as possible by the way they’re not done you know I’m being told by a lot of really good sources in this game that the Dodgers the Red Sox Yankees and Mets all have checkbooks ready they’re ready to play checkbook baseball all four of those organizations are everywhere and especially on Scott B’s clients so this is just the first Domino to fall Dodgers aren’t done by any means and this pitching Market if you’re Corbin Burns or you’re Max freed right now you are smiling earto ear because this is only going to help how much they’re going to get paid Jim how do much does this move impact their pursuit of Roki Sasaki the young Japanese pitcher yeah it doesn’t affect it at all of course remember Roki Sasaki no team is going to have to pay any more than whatever their International pool is so that’s somewhere between five and N million that’s it so you know with Sasaki look all 30 teams are going to want him doesn’t cost a lot of money he’s got the potential of being a future Sai Young Award winner but there’s been a lot of questions if Sasaki wants to go to the Dodgers what I’m being told is that endorsements are going to be very important to him because he knows if he comes here he’s got to wait three years before he’s eligible for salary arbitration got to wait six years before free agency so how is he going to get paid it’s called Endor Ms back in his home country in Japan and what they’ve learned is you can’t really get endorsements if you play on the same team with showy Otani because he’s going to get all of them so there’s a big idea with his agency the waserman agency that he’s going to probably better off signing in another Market maybe in a New York Market or a Philadelphia market so I don’t think the Dodgers are confident that they’re going to be able to get him so when you get a chance to get a a two-time sa Young Award winner like Blake Snell you pull P the trigger and that’s what they did yeah they also got Yamamoto so you’re talking about trying to get uh a sliver of that pie if you will and as we’re a couple days out of Thanksgiving sliver that pumpkin pie my favorite pie uh the Dodgers are one of five teams that have reportedly made an offer to ju SoDo other teams include the Yankees Mets Red Sox and blue jays Jim what’s the latest on the stto sweep Stakes yeah the Phillies are in on that as well uh by the way so add them to your list of teams that have met with Juan sto so sto has has met with all of the owners as well as GMS and managers um all of those teams have given their pitch on what their franchise looks like now what their farm system looks like what their plan is going forward so onean has a pretty good idea where they’re coming from and now the offers are coming in uh they’re going expected to come in the rest of this week and then they’re going to start exchanging now I continue to hear that the New York teams are going to have the advantage here both the Mets and the Yankees but I’ve Been Told continuously do not count out the Red Sox the Dodgers or the Phillies who are all what I’m hearing is serious now that being said I think it’s more likely that the Boston Red Sox get Burns or freed or both I think the Dodgers are not as obsessed with stto as perhaps the New York teams and if I had to bet he’ll land with either the Yankees or the Mets now I still think Steve C of the Mets will end up with the biggest offer on the table in the most years but I think Hal Stein Brer has the capability of putting an offer on the table um that Juan stto you know may just want to go back there so time will tell none of us know the answer but I am being told this that in all likelihood when I get on a plane a week from Sunday to go to the winter meetings in Dallas they’ll probably already be signed is what I’m being told so it’s going to be interesting all right so add another team into the WAN stto sweep Stakes the Philadelphia Phillies but you heard Jim there if he was a betting man stay in New York either the Mets or the Yankees and we’ll have the latest when that happens hopefully the next time I speak with you is when Juan sto has a new team that’d be pretty good I’m looking forward to it one of the best players of this
