all right greetings from uh Los Angeles I was looking back on the last video we’ve done and it was actually from La it was the Carl Anthony towns uh trade roughly almost 3 months ago and I figured we would do a um a video since we’ve got uh the December 15th date coming around the corner 87% of the league can be traded certainly Jimmy Butler has been the news uh this week here um plenty of talk on NBA today um so I figured we’ do a little bit of a butler trade video and just kind of go through the ramifications and the the logistics and the complications and kind of all that here I have got my phone over here with some notes on it here so if you look you see me looking over to the right um a couple of uh ground rules or housekeeping here you know certainly the uh the Bernie Lee who is Jimmy Butler’s uh agent um stole the show the other night as far as with his uh verbal I don’t even know what to call it um assault on on Shams and I’m not gonna really dive into that but I I would say this that what uh Shams put out there certainly with what he wrote in his U really good article on NBA um pass on ESPN and then what was reported with Phoenix being a team that Butler would go to if he can’t work out a deal in Miami um that was 100% accurate um from all the people I’ve talked to and all the people he’s talked to 100% accurate so I have no idea why uh Bernie Lee would go on a rampage that night but it is what it is and I’m not going to speak out on that but I would I do want to let you know that that was 100 probably 150% accurate trust me it was true um so let’s go a little bit through this Butler situation here we’ve written about it at length when when the Heat season ended when Miami did not extend him this offseason he’s extension eligible for two years $113 million really the extension is only about $60 million in new money because remember Butler’s got two years left on his contract 48.8 this year $52 million next year he’s got the over 38 rule which would apply so basically the extension Works where the option year gets removed and then two New Years gets attach attached on so the extension would extend into 20126 27 so when you look at it from from the Heats perspective um it would be one more year of new money that uh would be included with what is owed on the Butler contract as I said he’s got a 52 million player option that uh next year he’s extension eligible up until June 30th if he’s traded um the same extension is going to be available for him to sign with a new team so there’s not much of a difference maybe a teeny bit of difference certainly from a um from a financial perspective um as I said when the heat did not extend Butler this off season um eventually there was going to be some noise as far as what is going to happen with the future of Jimmy Butler Miami is playing their best basketball of the year they’re on a four-game winning streak um I think we’ve seen the identity of this roster is certainly Tyler herro and and bamat bio and that’s no offense to Jimmy Butler but I think in the pecking order of how this roster is now and how this roster is built in the future those two players are in the Forefront and I think it’s hard to commit a third year for Butler and pay him $58 million in 2026 27 now if he opted in that’s one thing you you deal with it and he’s on a $52 million expiring contract and you go from there so from the from the Heats perspective and I when we’re on TV we only have a certain amount of time to try to get our point across and and the one thing I I mentioned in our production meeting on um on Thursday and we didn’t I didn’t have an opportunity to do it because we were doing a touchcreen is listen at the end of the day the heat are in the driver’s seat here man like even if Jimmy Butler has a hisory py fit which I don’t think is going to happen because they’re winning um they are in the driver’s seat man they they don’t have to do anything with Jimmy Butler Jimmy Butler can play out this year and he can decline his option and become a free agent and I know the threat is there that you know he can go sign with someone else and my question is who who who is Jimmy Butler going to go sign with we’ve we’ve looked at the landscape of the market the only team that has cap space is Brooklyn and do you think Brooklyn’s going to want a 36 yearold Jimmy Butler paying him $50 million I think the answer is no so when you when when the threat is there that he could become a free agent and the heat can lose him for nothing who cares like like they’re in the driver’s seat and they control the Jimmy Butler situation here so when you look at it from there they can sit back in Phoenix and um Dallas and Golden State and some of the other teams Houston for example they can call and they can say no we don’t like that we don’t want a money money going into um into 2026 27 and I think in the economics of this CBA you do not want money stretching long term at4 to 50 million that’s that’s kind of a doomsday scenario here and I think if as I said if you’re Miami where you’re over the luxury taxes this year you’re $1.6 million below the second apron you are looking at how do we how do we remain competitive how do we have a a punchers chance in the Eastern Conference how do we um regain some Financial flexibility down the road how do we maybe build up our draft assets and I think if you’re if you are you know you’re certainly you’re taking calls and every team takes calls that doesn’t mean a deal is imminent you have a checklist of things that you want to accomplish and as I said moving off $ 48.8 million in this day and age it presents a challenge every player in this NB in the NBA is trade eligible you know certainly guys like LeBron and Bradley Beal who have no trade Clauses that’s a different boat here but you can make a deal work but it’s certainly it’s certainly very very complicated so let’s just let’s just go rapid fire through some of these teams I have my notes here um and we and listen we we go on the touch screen we we show things the goal when I go on a touchcreen is to show you how the money works the goal for me is not to show you what do I think is a good trade when I’m going on on the touch screen and talking about Golden State and stacking contracts I’m basically trying to show you how you have to get to a certain point in a Jimmy Butler type trade so people say why would you include buddy heel well buddy heel makes $8.5 million and the number just makes it more feasible so that’s a little bit of the goal when we’re doing the touchscreen and we’re showing how money works and and all that here one of the teams mentioned is Dallas listen Dallas and their general manager Nico Harrison they have been Ultra Ultra aggressive Kyrie Irving PJ Washington Daniel Gafford they’ve trade KY U they’ve traded draft picks individual uh trades three picks three first for those three players they’ve turned over the roster this summer with clay and Quinton Grimes and Naji Marshall so they are aggressive right but here’s the thing Dallas is $526,000 below the first apron they’re not allowed to exceed it in any deal and you’re not trading Luca and Kyrie so now you’re looking at gutting your roster sending out enough money so you’re looking at Washington you’re looking at Gafford you’re looking at Naji Marshall you’re looking at possibly Klay Thompson a four for one type deal and then having enough money to go out and sign loster spots you know 12 13 and 14 to players in um on minimum contracts you’ve got two first 25 and 31 but at the end of the day do you want um your three players of Butler Irving and Luca making 10 um $160 million in an older Jimmy Butler and that basically depletes your debt can Dallas do a deal they can but as I said it involves four or five players going out three the third team and most of these deals would have to get involved to take back more money so you you’re basically sending out more money remember Miami cannot take back more money in a trade okay because they are an apron team so if they’re sending out 48.8 you have to take back 48.8 or less unless it’s a minimum player on a minimum contract that is allowed you are allowed to include them they basically do not count against the apron um as far as from a restriction standpoint so that’s Dallas golden state is certainly a team that’s me been mentioned but golden state is in the same boat as the Dallas Mavericks they turned over the roster the summer um in the Clay Thompson trade they’ve got buddy heeld and Kyle Anderson and DeAnthony Melton they are triggered by the first apron also they are 534,906 another team Andrew Wiggins does does um does Miami want Andrew Wiggins who has this year and two more years left on his contract it’s hard it’ be hard pass for me then you’re adding contracts right DeAnthony Melton um Brandon psky Kon Looney Gary Payton some guys that are in expiring contracts you’re likely going to have to get a third team involved you’ve got three first round picks to trade so the numbers are there but it’s another scenario where you are basic basically have to stack contracts and send out four players and a uh Jimmy Butler trade do you want to extend Jimmy Butler for another two years at 113 million I think if you’re if you’re um if you’re um Golden State that’s a no and you’re not adding Jonathan kaminga and a in a Jimmy Butler trade that ain’t happening so that’s Golden State for you right there I think certainly listen the team the team that makes the most just from an economic that checks the boxes finances tradable contracts draft assets is Houston but their GM um Rafael Stone has gone on the record and and said basically we like our roster I don’t anticipate changes he said this on serus XM um they are a top four team in the Western Conference they have certainly exceeded um or um outpaced this rebuild that started with the Harden trade back in 2021 but he they’ve gone on record right but I’ve gone on TV and I said listen maybe you don’t have to said this to Chan maybe you don’t have to touch the young kids what would you you know a butler Jeff Green Desa Desa Tate you know that type of deal um Dylan Brooks right type deal works and they certainly have the expiring contracts they’ve got um Stephen Adams they’ve got Jaylen um jayen Jeff Green they’ve got jock landelle Tate um Dylan Brooks got uh this year in two more years so the numbers for for them would work still another one of those deals where you’re sending out four players and what does that do for um what does that do for Miami right does it just make sense do you just have expiring contracts wouldn’t you want Butler just to opt in then and still remain competitive so listen I’m not saying Houston’s a favorite I’m just saying Houston has the pieces if they ever wanted to do a Jimmy Butler type deal um Phoenix certainly that’s the last team that was mentioned I said on TV listen at the end of day the probably it’s the easiest deal but the easiest deal requires buddy uh buddy um Bradley Beal to wave his no trade clause that carried over in the deal from the Wizards um Miami willing to take Bradley Beal in a trade uh Miami willing to exorb the $110 million that is owed to Bradley Beal after this season um they only have a first round pick in 2031 Phoenix does the trade they can trade or swap that um for me it’s a hard no um because at and I said this also in our production meeting wouldn’t you want to just extend Jimmy Butler at the same number that you’re taking back Bradley Beal’s contract it doesn’t it makes zero sense if you’re the heat um because Jimmy Butler at the end of the day is a better player than Bradley Beal um even though Butler has missed a lot of games I think there’s more of a reliability um factor with with Butler and Beal listen it has not been great since since um Phoenix traded for him um so I would pencil that as probably highly highly unlikely just because of not just the no trade I I I think if it ever came to fruition certainly um you know Beal would if he could go to Miami would wave it but why in the world would the heat want to absorb that contract it makes um it makes zero sense um in the world the only way it would make sense if Beal knocked off the player option which is at 57 million and basically it’s it’s Tit for Tat as far as Butler for Beal um as far as the number numbers um the numbers matching up there uh I do think Phoenix is going to be aggressive certainly nurkic Grayson Allen a kji guys like that who can be traded January 15th um but that’s kind of the landscape as far as where the Bradley Beal situation it’s it’s listen it’s different than a player saying I want to be traded it’s basically listen I I want to get extended likely Wendy has talked about it I want to get extended in Miami what are my options if I can’t get an extension with the heat right now there’s no extension on the table as has been reported multiple times and that’s kind of the world we live in here so that’s the landscape as far as with Jimmy Butler and as I said before listen Miami is in the driver’s seat right now they can his agent and Butler can say we’re going to be a free agent we’re going to see what the market is the Market’s not there man the Market’s not there for guys for teams to pay a 36y old $40 million hope you have a great day and we will talk soon [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is
