one-year contract with the team represents a chance for renewal for a player who despite the immense potential shown early in his career has failed to establish himself in the NHL so now what can the leas expect from this player who is a very familiar name for hockey fans especially those who follow Alex’s brother William neander Alex neander story is a bit of a roller coaster born into a talented environment with his brother being one of the team’s top players Alex has always been compared to William and the pressure on him has never been small who wouldn’t be excited to play alongside their brother in addition Neil Ander played his Junior season in Missi alongside several talented prospects and even made his NHL debut against the Leafs in 2017 however unlike his brother Alex’s path hasn’t been as glorious drafted in the first round of the 2016 draft neander arrived with high expectations but those expectations didn’t come to fruition as hoped throughout his NHL career he has never been able to play more than 50 games in a season the 2019 the 2020 season when he scored 26 points in 65 games with the Chicago Blackhawks seemed to be a turning point but it wasn’t enough to guarantee stability the impact of the covid-19 pandemic unexpectedly affected his career with Alex being relegated to the Blackhawks taxi Squad The Following Season even when he had an opportunity with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2022 2023 the results were not promising with only two points in nine games however it was surprising to see him not signed by an NHL team during the summer after a solid season with the Columbus Blue Jackets where he finished with 15 points in 23 games instead of continuing his path in the NHL neander signed with the Toronto Marley’s the Lea affiliate team where he had the chance to Showcase his toal again and it was there that he stood out with 12 points in 14 games this was enough to convince the franchise that he was ready for another shot in the NHL especially on a team struggling with key player injuries but does he have what it takes to solidify a spot on the Leafs Alex got his chance to shine last Sunday when he made his debut with the main team against Utah playing alongside Fraser Minon and Nikita grankin two players he had recently worked with on the Marley’s he showed some signs of chemistry and a willingness to contribute neander led to lease in shots during the first period with two attempts but he couldn’t create any major scoring chances his presence was subtle and he played only 4 minutes and 51 seconds still it was interesting to see how he adapted to the game with the team putting him on the second power play unit but without concrete results although he didn’t register any points in his debut game NE Lander’s performance wasn’t a failure he showed creativity good vision and the ability to take risks with shots even though he wasn’t able to generate significant chances on a team dealing with a number of injuries any Boost from players trying to carve out their space is valuable neander however still has a long way to go before establishing himself among the team’s top players will he become the game changer the least need at this moment what we see from neander is the same as we’ve seen throughout his career a combination of talent and frustration he is smart creative with a unique ability to suggested a trade that can help the leaf solidify their defensive line by bringing in Mikey Anderson from the Lost Angeles Kings the trade proposal involves the following Toronto Maple lease acquire Mikey Anderson and a sixth round pick in 2026 Los Angeles Kings acquire Matt Benning Fraser Minon and Nikita grankin this trade proposes a significant addition for the leaves bringing in a solid and prising Defender and Anderson while the Kings receive a veteran Defender Matt Benning and two young players with a lot of potential in Fraser Minon and Nikita grankin however there are still uncertainties about the king’s willingness to trade Anderson a crucial player for Los Angeles’s defense Mikey Anderson currently in the second season of his eighty year $33 million contract would be a strategic addition for the Leafs with three goals and four assists in 21 won games he would bring a strong physical and defensive presence as well as adding some offensive options to the blue line with the Leafs Anderson would fit as a secondline Defender increasing the depth of the defense which already features some Heavy Hitters on the other hand the trade also involves Matt Benning who was a team where he can play regularly while the Leafs are looking to improve their defense another big topic on the team is Austin Matthews return the team’s Captain has missed the last eight games due to an unspecified injury Matthews traveled to Germany for treatment and returned to the ice for practice last Saturday during the session he expressed optimism about his recovery saying he was making
