coach Illinois at Ruckers two veteran coaches Brett be at Illinois before the game had a chance to win 10 games wow Greg shano at rutkus had a chance to win nine games right they made some really big decisions at the end of the game the first one was Greg shano calling a timeout when Illinois was lined up to kick a 58 yard game-winning field goal let’s listen to the why he made the decision he made retrospectively I wish I hadn’t right but been doing this a lot of years sometimes I do sometimes I don’t um we were going to make sure we were going to call time on anyway maybe I should have done it before he kicked the ball so it wouldn’t have told him oh jeez that wind is strong I’m not going to we can’t make that kick so Greg made a decision to call timeout what what goes into that decision well I coach kicker my a good portion of my career as a special teams coach and the one thing kickers are odd Ducks you know kickers have they’re very routine oriented and so after coaching kickers I would actually ask them what’s the you know why would I call or it’s called a freeze timeout and I came up with the conclusion that the whole idea being sometimes use it sometimes not because the kicker even when you don’t use it it’s in the back of the mind that guy might so it’s screwing up what the routine so Greg I imagine you like you said we’ve all done you done it I’ve done it let’s freeze the kicker let’s not freeze the kicker he made a decision but the decision he gave Intel to the opposing coach Brett belma Greg’s made a decision to call timeout right now let’s go to the other Sidelines and see what coach belma decides coach belma he’s on the road so shano’s got a little Advantage because you know you’ve been in those stadiums you don’t really understand I used to look at the flags but I knew Ohio stadium much better I knew and that wind was swirling a matter of fact they some people said the wind was right in his face a 58- ydd field goal without wind is very small right percentage of chance of making it you throw that wind in there the ball goes way short way left coach belma makes a decision said i’ rather analytics and just percentage says we have a better chance of completing a pass down the field instead of kicking his field goal so the chess match continues now let’s go to Greg shano and he has to make a decision whether to pressure or sit back age- old decision do you play coverage or pressure to the quarterback but I want the viewer this is not just about trying to score touchdown they’re actually not they’re they got a one they’re down by one Illinois so all they have to get in as in coach’s mind the 25 yard line is the line of demarcation that means you get to the 25 yd line high percentage chance of making that that’s a a thir 42 yard field goal most kickers can make that uh so it’s not so Greg Shanel is not it’s not a Hail Mary situation so he makes a decision to pressure the quarterback get the ball out fast they play Zero coverage behind it and obviously Illinois executes and makes one of the great plays of the Season all right Jer here you go you can see coach shano is bringing in a max pressure again the defense is saying let’s stop them at the 25 you know what happens though you give credit where credits do tailback does a great job stepping up look at the offens line right give it a quarterback time and as he gets hit he delivers the ball to one of their better players Pat Bryant and the rest is just incredible individual effort by a great player and they go into New Jersey and find a way to win
