welcome to scouching next video room today we’re looking at Calgary Flames first round pick zann perek again thank you so much for all of the positive attention and feedback we’ve been getting on these videos If you really like it definitely drop a like and we’ll be dropping more the more people watch these and the more people like them and if you really liked it head over to sco.ca.gov drafted right around where I might start thinking about taking him I think he’s a player with tremendous offensive potential and some work to be done on the finer points of the game and I’m very very curious as to how this game goes I’ve seen perek a couple of times this season I’ve Come Away with very similar impressions as to what I had last year but let’s get right into it and get this going so perek is number 19 he’s in the white jerseys playing for the Sagen Spirit here I’ll identify him just as he pops into frame here so he’s on the right side this guy number 19 just for reference so on his first shift we see something that I’ve seen a lot with zann perek a player who definitely wants to push things offensively on both sides of the puck if that makes sense he’s a guy who wants to create turnovers as quickly as possible and generate things going offensively and at times it can burn him and right here is an example of where it burns him so you’ll see him pinch up the right wing here on this breakout pass so this is coming this way and perek is going to pinch into the neutral zone and in this interaction here it’s it to me it’s not the greatest read because you’ve got one Flint player two flint players and three Flint players and a bit of a line a dividing line between some back Checkers from sagona so now what you’ll have is one guy back this guy’s momentum is carrying him this way perk doesn’t get a stick on the puck and doesn’t cause a turnover and now you have men coming the other way so let’s see what happens on this play but perek gets caught in the neutral zone and now you’ve got a two-on one on your first shift of the game it gets broken up by PJ foron here uh so good for him but perek being aggressive there’s trade-offs and that’s a first example of something that happens a lot with him where he’ll step up in the neutral zone try to play with defense with his stick and it just won’t go his way so this is just a really nice Rush from perek he’s a guy who just is a wonderful forward skater and really loves to carry the puck himself it’s not amazingly fancy but that’s just a really nicely placed pass over the defenseman’s stick to get the puck in the offensive zone with control if you want a guy you can generate offense this is the kind of thing he’s going to need to do carry the puck you know flip the pass a little bit here and there just to sort of maintain possession easily on those on those situations so that’s something perek does well and did it well on that on that Rush there I’m not exactly sure what happens here but perek gets beat pretty clean I think he’s trying to stop the puck with his feet but flint kind of just blows right through everyone and and nearly gets a pretty decent chance on net here it’s not a huge thing but I do remember seeing little weird instances like that with perk defensively where just trying to do a thing doesn’t quite work out and he bobbles it or it just ends up in a dangerous spot so just refining that might be a thing to keep in mind so here’s Zan per again trying to block a defensive Zone entry and it just gets right through him and Flint manages to get a pretty clean defensive Zone entry it’s a pretty soft stick check there and 47’s in they have numbers so it’s not the end of the world but you’ll also note that perk kind of leaves 77 here a little bit open he was the person that was interacting with perek on that entry so perek is covering him here but on the this entry he kind of abandons him isn’t really keeping his eye on anyone really just focusing on the puck and the idea here from Flint is pretty good right this guy here sees that this player is open because perek isn’t really covering him so now Sagen has three guys you know perek isn’t really covering much space here uh and this could be a decent opportunity on net here because perek isn’t also facing the player who would be receiving that pass but it doesn’t get through and they break up the play and here comes perek and that’s a great breakout pass there like that’s high-end a high-end thing there right so you’ll see perek knock the puck down take a look and just clean delays it for a split second I’ll play it again just delays a split second and what that does and this is so important especially at higher levels this guy’s momentum is carrying him this way so to recognize that and be able to go all right well I’m just going to wait and get the puck around the back of this player because that’s a much harder thing to knock down now you’ve got offensive zone time and a score boring chance so that and a goal so there’s Zan perk getting an assist at even strength that starts with him this is kind of how he does it right those little moments of delaying and Cris breakouts last season I didn’t see as much of that so hopefully that’s something I see more of in this game because that’s what I like to see especially out of offensive defenseman that ability to juggle options and play the delay game a little bit because it’s just a high-end thing that you need to do and just to back up there I mean perek is the guy on the defensive Zone exit here he has a little bit of trouble knocking this down tries to dangle on the entry gives it up and now Flint is coming the other way so we’re seeing perk be very aggressive and there are upsides to that but there’s been a couple instances already and we’re not even halfway through the first period of him getting a little bit caught a little bit out of position and relinquishing a little bit too much dangerous space if you have a responsible system around him like Sagen has done so far it’s not the end of the world you can cover for it but half of what I do is understanding what a player does and does not do so that you can work around it and perek is a very interesting case of a lot of this so now we’re just going to see Zan perek sort of doing his job in the offensive zone this is kind of where he always has shined so a little delay there and a quick little dish to this guy there is just a nice simple pass especially because he was drawing pressure if you’ll note he was skating more in this direction and he just knows how to play with drawing players around the ice and moving Pucks in order to maintain possession and then after this you’ll see him also make a little bit of a skating move around the Blue Line there gets around his guy pushes deep into the offensive zone you know it’s stuff like this where he can push into the offensive zone just and that’s just a great little skating move so he’s drawing guys around he’s playing around with people’s minds so you’ll note that he kind of Jukes his way off of 15 here steps into the offensive zone fakes again doesn’t really face a whole lot of pressure gets the puck out to number eight who dishes it right back to him nice little skating move to sort of say hey maybe I’m going to shoot now oh psych I’m going to take another step and shoot and just score goals that way as a defenseman right if you’re going to shoot from the point make it interesting and perek has always been a player that that at least makes it interesting in that area so this isn’t the end of the world here again but it’s a little bit of a soft stick check he kind of trips number nine there on Flint but I wouldn’t have called that at all which they don’t but then on this I mean he is inviting pressure from number nine and that could have been a pretty nasty turnover and there was a couple of those uh in the games that I saw last year of him but connects on the pass they get the puck out of the zone and he goes for a shift again not the end of the world but just something to highlight because when that stuff Burns you it can burn you pretty bad at higher levels beautiful stuff here from perk this is just awesome so he’s using his edges super super well that four Checker had no chance on that situation he’s just using his feet to get around the ice really really well this is honestly a lot better than what I remember from even the tail end of last season he’s just carrying the puck in much more creative ways and deceptive ways that I think are really really high in traits I’ll back it up because that was just really really nice to sort of use your edges and create some space skating backwards and get back moving forwards and deceive on the exit there stop up get the pass through and you have your offensive zone exit so a really really nice sequence there from Zan perek to get the puck out of his own end and the reason I’m highlighting it is because last year there was a lot of sort of dumping it from there or just rifling it into the neutral zone to nobody at all and he didn’t drive the best numbers in that area so it’s nice to see him being a little bit more assertive with the puck on his own stick and I’m sure he’s the type of player that doesn’t mind doing that again confidence can take you so far especially in junior hockey I mean look at this he just goes right around 17 here who just does not give him nearly enough pressure and he gets himself through the slot on his own relatively unpressured and generates an offensive zone cycle pretty much on his own so the confidence in his game and the ab and again holy smokes look at him go this is the thing with perek and the offensive zone he’s a wizard just the ability to strip pucks that spin fully in stride get into scoring areas and generate scoring chances that’s all just really really really impressive and things that I’ve really liked in his game to me the more finer details are a bit of an issue especially in his own end and he hasn’t really been tested there much at all in this game but you’re definitely seeing the offensive tools at work here and what in my opinion makes a guy like per really really special and could be a really Dynamic projectable offensive NHL defenseman at some point in the future so this is a bit of a shade of what I’m more used to with perk where you kind of see the right instincts and sort of Next Level skill in terms of baiting and dragging pressure around but it’s just a bit of a sloppy exit here again he’s inviting a lot of pressure to himself this is a bit of a scary scenario because again he’s looking past this way a quick turnaround from 91 here or a knockdown from 18 here and you’ve got possession in arguably the scariest place on an ice surface if you’re an NHL defenseman he misses on the breakout pass and they’ve got the puck turned over uh it is in the offensive zone for perek but not under their possession and his forwards go and get it for him so again Sagen it seems like Saga is just running Flint over in this game which you know fair enough saena can do that so in terms of this thought process that we go through sometimes about thinking quickly and just executing quickly and not making mistakes being a really really important thing in the NHL a lot of things just happen really quickly and defenseman will just Rim the puck around the boards because they’re facing pressure really quickly and they don’t want to turn the puck over in this area of the ice but perk looks like with some space here he has some space to make a play of some kind and I suppose that the the clear option to me is to go down the boards here to this guy in the corners who who can then get the puck into the middle of the ice here but Pere kind of tries to do it himself gets around the guy checking against him doesn’t get through and now flints coming the other way so he picks it off on the offensive exit Great you know he bails himself out it’s just these things that collectively kind of can add up and at higher levels you know you don’t want to be doing things like that but again not the end of the world especially when you bail yourself out it’s just those I see an option I’m going to execute on that option keep eating minutes and just keep doing the thing so this is a good sequence from perck it’s more of kind of what we’ve seen a little more of but also I wanted to highlight that he throws a bit of a hit here on the defensive entry that blocks a player from getting into his defensive end which I love to see I didn’t see a ton of this from him last year stepping up and just playing that more safer and and dependable defensive style but this exit is really good this is something perek did all season last year as well and it’s something I wanted to see a lot more of to be honest I mean when he is assertive and confident as long as the talent can stay ahead of his competition in terms of skill and quickness and creativity I think he’s going to be just fine so I’ll back up but this little move on the exit here this is what I mean when I say make a passing Lane with your skill I don’t care how skilled you are right like in terms of how dangly you are and how fast you can move your hands or anything I don’t care how you use it is what really matters and this is a really good example of that right so perk just pulls the puck this way and it’s much much more difficult for the stick check to get on him he’s pulling it to his strong side he’s on his forehand here and and Michael me is wide open here right so this is a a very easy clean exit pass for perek just bang bang it’s in the offensive zone Misa doesn’t handle it perfectly but it’s now in the offensive zone and that could have been maybe a defensive Blue Line turnover if he just sort of lazily passed it into feat or didn’t do what he did there so that’s the kind of thing I want to see out of him that’s I he’s taking a step this is stuff he was capable of he was showcasing it last year I think he got a lot more comfortable and finding that balance point in terms of what he can take on in that confidence level over the course of last season now you’re seeing someone who in my opinion is really imposing himself on his opponent and I mean Flint in this game has been not great so I backed up a little bit because I was a little confused on what happened on that last play on that defensive Zone stoppage but I do want to highlight perct just getting his stick in there again he’s not just aimlessly whacking at pucks to get the puck away from whoever has it you’ll note that he Taps it to a guy who’s there for support in in Misa here so a little quick stick tap it’s a penalty so you know obviously nothing comes of it but he could have just whacked at it and put it wherever but it feels like this is a player who is able to make these little stick checks and Taps to pass pucks on these entries and everything so just little things like that can also be really really handy especially if you’re not known as that stable Rock Solid physical defenseman which I don’t think perek is but if you’re going to step up at the Blue Line make stoppages like that with your stick if you can and manage to find guys to get the puck to Under Pressure you’re golden this is just another really good moment of off- Puck positioning and and having that payoff for perek in this situation he’s not being the aggressive player here he’s he’s doing a really really good job in my opinion supporting his partner Flint on the breakout here they kind of have numbers is they could if this player back here were a little quicker but this guy is heading this way and perek is just patrolling this area of the ice right so he’s kind of just covering that area this is covered by his partner here and you’ll note that again this saucer pass attempt to get into the offensive zone here perek is in a really good position to block this right he just switches his feet around a little bit steps up a couple of feet and just again a quick little tap it’s blocked unfortunately by flint and again this is something that has happened to perk in the past but that positioning was good the idea was good and I’ll back it up just to say like I don’t think he really made the wrong play here obviously this is a bit of a risk but I don’t know what else he was supposed to do just maybe get a little bit more mustard on this but getting it to this guy through that seam is the right idea it’s just a really nice knockdown by this guy to keep the puck in the offensive zone considering all of the things that perek has done in this game that has been positive I don’t care that much relatively minor especially because the idea and everything was was kind of sound on that so this is another really little thing that I think players like perk need to be aware of and it’s something that perek does here it’s not something that he’s not doing but it’s these subtle little Cuts right so he takes a subtle tiny little move to get more lateral because there’s just not many options for him here to really do much and this is a bit of pressure that I imagine he doesn’t want to deal with so just cutting away from where the Defenders are a little bit like look how much more room he has to play with here right so it’s a little cut right so he goes from being on on the strong side of the ice basically here like if the midline of the ice is here he’s on one side of the midline he cuts across and now he has way more space to play with a quick little saucer pass and I think 42 does a great job here establishing possession in the offensive zone so you know he Corrals that pass about as well as you possibly could which is great but perk there I thought that was a really good example of the little tiny motions that a player can do breaking out the defensive end that can open more options for you and here comes a three-on-one we’ll see how he defends it and he gets there like that he got the job done I don’t really know what else he could have done on this play I think Flint maybe took on a little bit uh a little bit too much time to figure something out there but perek just gets his stick in there takes the guy into the boards uh Flint still has possession unfortunately but he’s doing what needs to be done he’s chipping in defensively as needed and again like this is a sport of Aggregates this game on the whole has been great from perek in my opinion it’s been great from sagona in general so I have no real complaints and the pros outweigh whatever cons we’ve seen in this game in my opinion so we just saw him chipping in a little bit defensively where kind of needed and this was something with perk that I also felt was a bit of an area of improvement last year I I’ll admit it got better as the year went on but just on defensive Zone retrievals just not really acting with a whole lot of intensity he’s not getting into the corners here he’s relinquishing this race on a loose Puck to Flint and again Flint turns it over immediately and doesn’t really catch on their own support or give their own support but on those plays NHL teams are going to get by perre they’re going to get body positioning on him and create Cycles in his defensive Zone and so those are things that in junior hockey with a really good team you can probably get away with but in the NHL I feel like intensity level and competitiveness and that and that sort of getting into those dirty areas is going to be important and I’m going to back up a sec because again a really really smart clever little behind the back pass quick thinking he doesn’t even look I think it’s just he knows there’s someone there but a quick behind the back pass there’s nothing really Flyn can do about that and and and saga’s off on the races and they go offside this is a really great trademark zann perek thing I this is why I think he’s going to be a great PowerPlay offensive defenseman that can play on your second pair just a really really rock solid offensive contributor just a really high-end offensive play here he blocks the Blue Line carries the puck there a little delay to get around the guy going swimming there doesn’t work out but that’s just a great example of a thing that that perk does I’ll and there he goes to scoring areas here this is why I’m not a huge fan of defending this way where you have all this space to cover and perek is such a dangerous junior hockey player it’s really quite something and you’re just you fall down and perek just Waits you out now he’s got a clear seam here to to whoever this is on the on the wing there it gets blocked unfortunately but watch perek keep your eyes on him in my mind I’m going how does this guy manage to work his way in here without facing really any pressure at all and get himself a scoring chance but I mean like I I don’t I don’t care what system you’re deploying but this is a bit of a collapse if if this is what you end up with because you don’t want Zan perek in this situation he just has it he goes for the scoring chance Goes Around the Net and then just tries to thread one out in front it gets covered but in the offensive zone Zan perek can be just a shark a monster you want to worry about him you don’t want to leave him alone he’ll find ways to get through you he’ll identify gaps he’ll get in there he can be a point producer this is how it happens for him so again on defensive retrievals perk can have some issues a little bit again he’s not doing a bad job here he’s doing what he needs to do right so here I paused it he’s got his shoulder check here I don’t think I’ll watch it again I don’t think he checks over his other shoulder and sees his partner here but he kind of eats the puck along the boards so he does do a little quick shoulder check there but I don’t think he would have seen 27 but he decides to just kind of go for the carry here and go up the boards this way when a reversal here would probably have given him a ton of options or at least More Than This which again Flint doesn’t do a very good job of of capitalizing on that loose Puck there and and establishing possession but when those things don’t work out they can really burn you and that’s not the first time that’s happened but again it’s not the end of the world but just those little things and being more dependable maintaining possession in those ways can unlock a lot of options and when you have options in hockey you’re you’re doing good so again perek being aggressive in the offensive zone here he’ll step up to try to block this with his stick and not get there quite quick enough and now Flint is coming back and luckily 21 here for sagona does a great job backchecking and covering this guy here but perek also loses his he’s just not much of a factor in that defensive rush at all but I mean lucky for sagov perek is a great offensive player and he’s already in the neutral zone and tried to get something done there but those offensive moments those aggressive moments those moments where you want him to see him trying to produce offense they can you got to have some responsibility around him to be aware of those situations cuz Flint did have numbers and there’s another goal my God what is happening so that’s it for Zan perk uh honestly I don’t really know what to say in terms of criticism at all I don’t I mean on one hand I don’t think Flint had a single cycle established in saga’s end but I don’t think that that’s just because sagona is good but I think it’s because pretty much every time they tried at least a lot of the time perek was there with his stick checking and positioning and good support and all in all I feel like his defending is quite a lot better than it was last year I still have concerns about what happens when that puck is is hemmed in his own end but last year I did say towards the end of the season that I didn’t have so much of a concern about his defending as much as I did about his ability to quarterback breakouts reliably make good reads of the neutral zone maintain possession really well there was just a lot of things that I think he did that were very very risky and he just kind of was turning the puck over a lot when he really didn’t need to and chasing offense a lot and stretching the ice too much but in this game he looked way way more projectable to me the two defensemen that got drafted ahead of him in the draft I had per higher than those guys because of these offensive abilities right the skill level that’s on display but not just the skill level it’s how he utilizes it we saw that a number of times here he’s got a really good brain for moving the puck up the ice as well baiting guys moving around pressure for opponents just messing with his opponents and doing a really good job of it it got him a lot of scoring chances it got him a lot of breakouts it got him a lot of time with the puck I don’t know I’ve spoken to a bunch of people about perk over the last while and he’s come a long way in his game from where he was a year ago as a guy that I had more in my 20s you know in retrospect would I have him ranked a little bit higher based on this game maybe a little bit you know I think a little bit I haven’t seen a ton of the guys I had ranked ahead of him in the last little while but he’s played really really well in this game I can’t really fault him I had him in my second tier which stretched all the way up to third overall you know he belonged in that group if you wanted to bet on his upside it’s there I will say I don’t think he was tested a tremendous amount defensively here but he did do a really really good job outside of the defensive Zone defending so I liked this game a lot from him I thought it was a great performance obviously Sagen just absolutely wiped the floor with Flint on this one so in that sense I mean it makes sense that he was great in this game because you know he did take such a big role on this team all in all though with perk better game than I expected he wasn’t tested a tremendous amount but when he was he was good the offense was definitely there there was some really Beautiful Moments in his game here so big UPS to Zayn perk I think the Calgary Flames have a really good player I’ve spoken to people about Zayn perek and the best thing I’ve heard regarding him is he kind of is like that John kingberg type of defenseman where when play is bogged down on your own end and you need him to step up physically and you know block the front of the net and and be really intense in his own end I don’t think you’re going to get that from perk but what you’re going to get is a guy who will score points you put him on the power play he will score points he will get the puck up the ice pretty well he’s lanky he can do a lot of things really really well you know maybe isn’t a super super high-end NHL Allstar every single year but could get there here and there I think perek has huge upside huge potential and so yeah this is a really good game from him so in general great game from perk a lot of fun to watch this one and break it down a little bit not a whole lot negatively to write home about but anyway yeah that’s going to be it so if you liked the video definitely like it with your thumbs up and leave comments if you want to discuss it further and if we get to likes on both this video and the one coming after it we’ll release a third one this week so
