welcome back to CBS Sports HQ this just in out of college football where Texas wide receiver Isaiah bond is not dressed for today’s playoff game against Clemson that is the very latest from our partners over at 247 Sports as we know he was injured during last month’s SEC Championship game lost to Georgia Bon has had a strong year for the Longhorns as we know taling 33 catches for 532 yards and five touchdowns as we welcome you back to our CBS Sports HQ Studios I’m Jordan Georgio alongside McKenzie Brooks Danny Canal Le J doable with you uh guys we are working through a massive day in college football two games of the first round um of the playoff in the books we got another one about to kick off from Texas um just your reaction Danny to this news from Isaiah Bond so a couple things one this isn’t a huge shocker that he’s not playing a lot of people didn’t think he would the other piece is he’s been banged up he’s missed a lot of time this year in general so I don’t think it’s a massive loss for Texas it is from a production standpoint but it’s not surprising they’ve been prepared for this the other good news is Matthew golden had a monster day in the SEC Championship Game even though they lost he had 168 yard receiving so they’ve got other weapons to go to wingo’s another receiver that’s a young talented player on the Texas Longhorns like they’re they’re not devoid of talent I mean we talk about Ohio State and their $20 million roster I don’t know if anybody recognizes that Texas has a $22 million roster they’ got a talent across the board so yes it’s a loss from a production standpoint but I don’t think it’s one of these my gosh what’s going to happen to the Longhorns yeah take your point he’s been banged up the whole year and Matthew golden has essentially been the number one guy for them most of the Year and I love what I’ve seen from Silas Balden the last few weeks they’ve actually gotten him more integrated into the offense as well so to DK’s point this is not something where they’re like oh my God Isaiah Bond’s not going to play today he’s been backing up most of the year and he hasn’t been the guy even when he’s been there so I think the uh the tech Texas will be I was about to say Houston Texas Texas playing right now it was messing me up Texas will be Kelvin Banks playing meig that’s the biggest story The Big that’s the big story to me but the bigger story of this game in the game script to me is this Texas defense like all respect this Texas offense but it’s this defense that should be able to shut down this game keep Clem Clemson tied under 20 points I think so that’s that’s the game script in my head this is no disrespect to bond but Kelvin Banks being there is a huge deal and it’s all about this Texas D to me all right so we will get to that game momentarily as it is moments from kickoff but we were in our postgame coverage as Penn State defeats absolutely dominates SMU in the first round of the playoff here is Jam Franklin Med football we appreciate that and we don’t take it for granted and I don’t just come in and say that each week I mean it um I want to thank the fans it was phenomenal the environment was phenomenal the turnout was unbelievable um you know we have the second largest stadium in college football fourth largest stadium in the world and 9 9% of the stadium was filled up with with our fans and it made a huge difference a lot of the other games um had some some built in advantages in terms of the distance between the two teams so the fact that we filled that thing up with 106,000 fans predominantly uh all of ours uh is significant and and and I don’t want that to come off the wrong way I got a ton of respect for SMU I got a ton of respect for Coach Lashley um um but it was it was impactful today and it’s really like that all the time from the spring game with 75,000 plus all the way through this season uh we get tremendous support and we don’t take that for granted so fans alumni Letterman um the community phenomenal and and again we don’t take that for granted um just because I I don’t want to forget this at the end uh our women’s volleyball program and Katie um they’re playing for the national championship tomorrow we wish them all the luck in the world they’ve had a unbelievable season obviously and that game um you know that they played where they were down by two and came back three sets uh was just crazy so you I think that’s one of the special things about being at Penn State there’s so many sports and so many coaches that are thriving um big part of that is our leadership with Pat craft and neie bipy um so we don’t take that for Grand whatsoever but but we’ll be screaming and hollering and watching and supporting uh ktie and our women’s volleyball program you know kind of summarizing the game um maybe the best performance on the defensive side of the ball that I’ve seen in a half we talk about three interceptions two for touchdowns that’s why you recruit uh linebackers that played running back um you know that was that was phenomenal and um took a little bit time for our offense to get going but obviously once we did uh did some great things specifically got the Run game going which which was important for us uh 12 wins in a season for the fourth time in school history uh joining the 1973 1986 and 1994 teams uh 33 wins over the last three seasons second time in program history last time that was done is 1971 to 1973 so ton of cool stuff to be proud of um you look at the stats that we focus on the takeaway battle was big uh three turnovers to to one uh explosive play Battle uh we won that third down battle we won that we tied the sack battle um the penalty battle we won that’s a whole another conversation and then the middle eight we won the middle eight so ton of cool stuff I I can go on and on and on but uh we got a team win uh LED from our defense in the beginning of the game at the end of the game it was a team win uh offense defense and special team so uh look forward to answering you guys questions and again I appreciate uh the coverage that you guys have given us all year open up the questions start Rich to your right James on your right what is it about Dom Duca who seems to have a knack of stepping up at the appropriate time and is that something that you saw in him when you recruited him yeah Dom’s just he’s a baller um you’re talking about a guy who was Pennsylvania Player of the Year won a state championship on a torn ACL um gray shirted to be able to come here uh came as a walk- on earned a scholarship and what a shame that there may no there may not be more stories like this in college football with the 105 rule there there may Dom Duca may not happen at Penn State so um I love Dom and Mom and Dad I think he’s a tremendous example for all of our players on the team um he’s got a smile on his face he’s appreciative he works his tail off trusted us when we talked about the positions that we wanted to play him and whatever role we’ve asked him to do he’s done it 100 miles an hour so um there’s a ton of changes in college football but this is one of these that that I’m struggling with because there’s been so many special stories over the years of Walk-Ons whether they’ve earned a scholarship or not they’ve been just such a significant part of the game and our history um so it it breaks my heart a little bit that that you know maybe Dom isn’t here you know if if these rules were in place so uh very proud James Franklin at the podium after Penn State
