what’s up Mets fans welcome back to talking Mets at Rob how is everybody doing we got some breaking news here for our New York Mets as they make first official sign in in their 2025 rotation and they signed Frankie Montas to a 2year 34 million ion dollar deal and he is officially a New York Met now I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I’m excited about this move but I am going to tell you is that the Mets needed depth in their rotation at the current moment it was David Peterson and kod senga they had to fill up roster spots they had to fill up rotation spots and we all heard David cerns talk about he wants a six-man rotation and this is how you build a back end of the rotation this is not a guy who is going to be a number two starter number one starter probably not even a number three starter he’ll probably be a four or five if not a six so everybody’s gonna say this is a massive overpay for Frankie Montas but I just want to go back to just last offseason $113 million for one year for Luis srino after his worst stats of his career he’s got $13 million star and pitching is still a premium even if you have over four er when it comes to a pitcher a star and pitcher and $17 million is kind of the going rate for an average pitcher just like $13 million $14 million was average salary for a mediocre pitcher last year like srino was and when it comes to fku Montage you know the good news here is that you had to get back all the Innings you got from canana from Mania from srino they pitched a ton of innings last year and you gotta fill that and one thing Frankie Montas did do is pitch Innings he had 150 Innings last year between two teams for Frankie Montas when he was with Cincinnati and when he with Milwaukee he do a total of 150 Innings which was the most since his 20121 season as we’ll get into his stats in just a little bit is this a good signing this is another re project right this is definitely a srino 2.0 right similar age similar stature similar way of pitching even though he doesn’t have the the repertoire that srino has seino was much worse when the Met sign Frankie Montas and again Frankie Montas is probably going to be a number five or a number six in this rotation as David cerns did say a six-man rotation is is very likely if they can do a six-man rotation which I’m assuming they’re going to do to keep kodai senga healthy you’re probably goingon to have to put him into a six-man rotation Frankie Montes is one piece of the puzzle for this Mets rotation in 2025 when we look at his stats last year again he had a really mediocre season right he threw 30 starts which was more than he ever has since 2021 he do 150 inin he had 148 strikeouts and his strikeout per nine was 8.4 which is pretty decent not great but it’s around Major League average but what I do like about this is that you could do a lot worse than Frankie montz as your number fifth starter or sixth starter unless you want Tyler Mill in this rotation and and that is the key right here right you we could talk about the pitching lab that successfully had made maniah have a great year for the New York Mets and along with Luis saino having a really solid year for the New York Mets and his pitching lab does help players and I’m not saying that Frankie montz is going to throw like srino did this year or even manah but if he becomes a pitcher that can throw around a 4ish erra you can see that it’s going to be much better and again if you go around baseball a number four and a number five starter in the Mets case a number six starter 4 through six starters you ain’t going to find a lot of them that have a three and a half ER or lower you’re going to find a lot of those starters being in the 4 ER range and that’s where Frankie monz is probably going to be if he gives you Innings back end of the rotation guys are guys that needs to give your rotation Innings Frankie Montas can provide that and I know we had a disaster with the Yankees I think once again the Yankees misuse a guy like Frankie Montas they misused a guy like srino they couldn’t pick up he was tipping pitches with Frankie Montas it wasn’t that he could he was tipping pitches he’s just you know not what he was five years ago with Oakland but can he be a quality pitcher in the backend the rotation absolutely again I’m not about this signing but it is definitely needed when you have two guys in your rotation in this off season in kod senga and David Peterson so good news is is that the Mets are filling out their rotation now there’s a lot more to but for the
