it might be boxing day but it doesn’t stop the NHL from having breaking news the Detroit Red Wings are making a coaching change we’ll discuss the move coming up next welcome back to another video here at topshelf hockey as I mentioned we have some breaking news from the NHL like said it’s boxing day I didn’t expect this to happen today not shocked that this is happening but thought maybe another day or two before it gets announced or maybe even later who knows but the Red Wings have opted to make a coaching change Derek lond is out as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings along with assistant coach Bob bugner this is only the second time during the uh time that the illage family has owned the Red Wings which has been I think since the early 80s um that they’ve actually made a change of the coach midseason there was reports um back a little not long before Christmas that iserman himself was ready to make a change but was getting a little bit of push back from ownership um but here here we are the announcements been made uh Todd Mullen who’s a very experienced NHL head coach once worked with the Red Wings as an assistant many years back under Mike Babcock will come back to the organization as the head coach bringing Trent Yanni with them as an assistant coach to replace Bob bugner so of course Lon and the Red Wings um not doing so well this year uh lost a number of games here down the stretch find themselves near the bottom of the uh Eastern Conference standings um obviously teams like Detroit and buffalo expected to take a step forward this year and they’ve not not only have they not taken the step forward but they’ve taken a step back and I said find themselves not only out of the playoffs on the outside looking in but near the bottom of the standings which is not what you would expect I do think it’s fair to say that there’s an argument to be made here for Detroit that this is as much about roster construction as it is about the coaching I mean I’m not sure that Derrik lone is the you know full reason that this team is not doing better um but at the same time when you look at the Blue Line and you still have guys like Petri and Hall there meanwhile they gave away Jake wman for nothing in the off season H that doesn’t look good Jake wallman’s having a phenomenal year with the San Jose Sharks uh that deal doesn’t look so good uh you know you brought in more aging veterans like Tera senko you resigned Patrick Kane who did look good last year but those guys haven’t produced the way you were hoping uh you free agent contracts like Andrew cop JT Comer have not aged well um you know they were rebuilding through the draft and they had lots of prospects coming up um you know Dylan lurkin kind of like the holdover if you will it was like a high Peck that made this roster it’s a youngster one of the few guys that you’ve seen not percolate in the HL forever all those years ago and it’s kind of it feels like he’s been there forever now uh but he was actually there towards the tail end of the last time this team was a little bit more relevant and now they find themselves um you know not only with a new streak of being out of the the playoffs but you know not this just not looking good uh this team does have some players that are coming up that are going to continue to get better and make this team better like Marco Casper and Edinson and yeah kosa between the pipes and Trey Augustine who you’re going to see in the real Juniors here um again like there’s lots of you know reasons to be optimistic about some of the players but overall as a group as a roster it’s just not good enough and when they to me the eer plan or whatever you want to call it kind of seem to abandon the whole draft and develop route to bring in veteran uh uh more experienced free agents and they just majority of them have just not worked out it’s just quite that simple uh so we’ll see what happens Tom Molen like I said a good coach has a good track record obviously coached with Edmonton coach with LA coach in San Jose a long time um you know he is a he is a good coach he’s got a good track record he has history with the red rings organization uh so we will see if he can make things any better I mean most teams do get a new coach bump early on but can it be sustained is it enough only time will tell but unfortunately for the Red Wings uh head coach Derrik Lon his Christmas present was to lose his job which you never want to see you always feel bad for these people um but for the team maybe their present is to get a new injection of optimism and change to try to get things turned around so let me know your thoughts on this coaching change for the Red Wings down in the comments we’ll discuss further if you’re new to the channel of course make sure you subscribe and stick around we’ll keep you up to date with all the news rumors and Analysis of all 32 NHL teams thanks for watching Ing and we will catch you next time [Music]
