situation I’ve mentioned this before the team desperately needs athletic perimeter players who can defend and apply pressure on the opposing offense unfortunately that’s something the team is lacking we don’t have players who can be the defensive focal point and apply consistent pressure Gabe Vincent for instance should be that guy but he’s our second worst defensive player according to the stats Austin Reeves ruie haimura and even D’Angelo Russell just don’t have the necessary athleticism these players can’t even win races against their own Shadows let alone against opposing players it’s an absolute mess in that regard JJ redic commented on the game against the Phoenix Suns noting that while we did some good things in the first half the third quarter continues to be a real problem for the Lakers they simply can’t maintain a consistent performance for 48 minutes this has been happening for a year and a half and I mentioned this during the live broadcast last night at this point it’s a Personnel issue we don’t have players who can perform consistently on a nightly basis the guys need to be nearly perfect for us to win Austin Reeves for example has been much better in the last two games but has been a tale of two halves a good first half and a poor second half again it’s about the lack of consistency D’Angelo Russell and ruie haimura are often absent Austin Reeves varies from game to game and now half to half I don’t know how to find that level of consistency with the current roster JJ reck also solidified this point by saying we don’t have the Personnel necessary for the defensive scheme we want to implement we need to try to address this in the meantime I hope this serves as a wakeup call for Rob pinka hey Rob it would be nice if you could get these guys for me offensively I can create the schemes we need but defensively I don’t have the Personnel we’ve talked a lot about effort but I don’t think it’s an effort issue I think these guys simply aren’t good enough we have a large enough sample size to know this last season they were inconsistent A Tail of two halves in one game they struggled in the first half but improved in the second then it flipped they were good in the first half but terrible in the second and then we Face Denver what happened another tale of two halves in the first half the Lakers looked good but they couldn’t maintain that performance in the second half when the offense isn’t working most teams rely on athleticism and defense they can impact the game in other ways and keep the score Within Reach so their Stars can close out and win those games the Lakers simply don’t have that they lack athleticism and players who can apply regular pressure we need versatile players who can defend and attack efficiently players like Zack Levine who have the athleticism and ability to relieve pressure off LeBron James and Anthony Davis would be ideal if we could bring in players like Dennis Schroeder and Dorian finny Smith we’d have that constant pressure at the point of attack Dennis schroer is a guy who can pick up at 94 ft and Dorian finy Smith can defend almost any position and apply pressure we need several defensive pieces who can play that role while still maintaining the offense because the Lakers offense has been good the problem is inconsistency we need players who can relieve pressure off LeBron James and Anthony Davis so they don’t have to score 65 points per game collectively for us to have a chance to win I hope Rob pinka can make something happen we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes but Rob has reportedly been very active in trying to make trades however trades require two parties no team wants to help the Lakers no one wants to be the team that basically saves the Lakers that’s something we need to keep in mind as well JJ reck made an interesting observation to be disruptive we need to start with the right Personnel unfortunately we don’t have many players who can apply full-court pressure opposing teams are always trying to disrupt our game just like we try to disrupt theirs we need to execute our game plans better sometimes we Face teams with exceptional players like Nicola yic we can plan as much as we want but great players always find a way to shine the other night for example yic Michael Porter Jr and Jamal Murray were all in great form this shows that regardless of our planning we need players who can apply constant pressure the problem is we don’t have the Personnel to pick up at 94 ft or to adjust our defensive game plans offensively we’ve seen different schemes but defensively as soon as teams figure out how to attack us we’re in trouble I don’t want to make a trade just for the sake of making one we can’t just give up two first round picks for someone like cam Johnson he would make us better but he wouldn’t solve all our problems alone Jared Vanderbilt would help a lot but we don’t know when he’ll return and even when he does how long it will take for him to be the player we know and love another way to address this would be to acquire two or three players who can apply constant pressure if we could bring in a Dennis Schroeder and a Dorian finny Smith we’d have that pressure at the point of attack Dennis Schroeder is a player who can defend the full 94 ft and Dorian finny Smith can guard nearly any position and apply pressure we need several defensive pieces that can play this role while still maintaining offensive capabilities because the Lakers offense has been solid the issue is inconsistency we need players who can relieve pressure off LeBron James and Anthony Davis so they don’t have to combine for 65 points per game for us to have a chance to win Zack Levine is one of those guys he has the athleticism can help with playmaking and rebounding and can be a scoring threat due to his athleticism he would immediately be our third best defensive player on this team based on rankings if we could get Zack LaVine and Dorian finny Smith we would have the athleticism versatility and size that we need alternatively if we made a trade with the Nets we could acquire cam Johnson Dorian finny Smith Spencer Den witty and dayron sharp at that point we should give up what whatever it takes trade both first round picks throw in a swap give up second rounders because we would then have a better balance of offense and defense we would have Dennis Schroeder who could be that athletic guard at the point of attack and Dorian finny Smith and cam Johnson who could defend nearly any position Dennis Schroeder and Dorian finny Smith would work wonders together because our least athletic player on the floor would be Austin Reeves and he wouldn’t need to guard the opponent’s best or second best player he’d be defending the Third or fourth best player instead Everything Changes including the defensive matchups especially if a guy like Dennis Schroeder continues to shoot as he has this season that would be huge we would have what we expected Gabe Vincent to be a guy who can consistently hit threes while also being that point guard who can defend and apply pressure even in Full Court situations sometimes I hope Rob palinka can make something happen we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes but Reports say Rob has been very active in trying to make trade however trades require two sides no team wants to help the Lakers no team wants to be the one that basically saves the Lakers that’s something we also need to keep in mind for example Dorian finny Smith is shooting about 40 41% from threo range with five or six attempts per game that’s impressive as he not only shoots efficiently but also in Volume Plus he’s an exceptional Defender capable of guarding the opposing team’s best player imagine having Dory and Finny Smith defending Kevin Durant instead of Austin Reeves or ruie haimura the difference would be enormous Reeves and hachimura have struggled defensively and that has been a recurring issue for the Lakers if we could put Dennis Schroeder on Devin Booker and Dorian finny Smith on Kevin Durant the defensive matchups would be much more balanced of course we’ll never completely stop players of Kevin Durant or Bradley Beal’s caliber but we can apply enough pressure to slow them down and try to keep them at their averages that would make a significant difference difference in game outcomes we need versatile players who can contribute both offensively and defensively the Nets have some of those players like cam Johnson and Dorian finny Smith they could be the answer to our defensive issues otherwise we need a high impact player like Zack Levine he has the athleticism and ability to relieve pressure off LeBron James and Anthony Davis allowing them not to
