[Music] we got some ft breaking news it’s Braun Katz and pinski Max Fred is a New York Yankee the Yanks win the AL East battle it’s eight years 218 million dollar largest deal ever for a left-handed pitcher fourth largest pitching contract in the game’s history well AJ the Yankees took a deep breath after they didn’t get Wan stto they hand out over $27 million per year which is 37th all time to a player just below glass now’s number to a left-hander coming from the Atlanta Braves so actually they helped out the Mets they got Max freed out of the NL East away from the Atlanta Braves I’m surprised though did you think the Yankees were gonna spend their money this way well after stto anything was possible I mean after losing stto they they had to do something to appease because there’s a rabid fan base is dererk who works with those nose my thing is they also helped out the white sock because if FR is worth worth what is Garett crochet worth in a trade right now I mean oh baby Chris getts is going thank you thank you New York right because freed doesn’t cost much and Katz I’m sure we’re going to hear your favorite line the Red Sox were in on freed but they came up short right to the end right to the end they were just they were it was between them and the Yankees just lost out but we said it on the show what what it was going to take to get them they’ve done it before the David Price deal netted him a netted him a World Series so I feel like it was worth it but the Yankees get another left-hander to add to this rotation just I love I love Max Fred’s competitiveness and what he brings to this team eight years he’s GNA be 39 concerned about that no look at who’s who’s aging better position players or pitchers pitchers pitchers have been aging better forever I don’t know if there’s any opt outs or anything like that but I’m not concerned I’m not concerned a pitcher going into this 39 age 39 season as Max is not a power guy though he’s not a power he’s not a v High V guy he’s a high spin guy with a slider and his curveball so that that helps us out a little bit he he knows how to pitch a little bit more than just being a guy that rares back and throws it so I don’t I think this is a great signing for the Yankees they did what they had to do to try to make their team a better team now the interesting thing is what happens in their rotation with go with Cole rhon where does Schmidt go like does he bounce into the bullpen I mean strowman obviously Nester do they try to make a move with Nester it’s it’s going to be interesting to see what the Yankees do from here on out but this is a big signing for the Yankees there it is current rotation Cole freed rodon heel no big deal one Al rookie of the year and then the mix of Nester Clark Schmidt Marcus strowman and good point here from Brendan cudy gives the Yankees the ability to make a deal guys because starting pitching is expensive so this is your opportunity to get a team of starter that can’t afford to play in the market and can grab a nester or a Marcus strowman I would say I agree with you to an extent maybe Schmidt can do a little bit of Bullpen work although he wouldn’t be happy about it to start the season until someone gets hurt but guys strowman and Nester Cortez do not want to be in the bullpen so if the Yankees do have a loaded five to start the year you’re probably not going to see them on the roster they’re going to be somewhere else right I mean the first thing everybody does is say oh how you how can you go into the season starting with you know more than five starters this is this is crazy but in that in that group Clark Smith’s clearly the one with less service time less dir in his cleats but he also got brought back and started and Nester piggybacked with him Nester showed his displeasure in it it’s actually nestor’s birthday today too so happy birthday Nester but it’s one of those things that you go don’t think trade don’t think tra think about longevity of the entire season and to me Clark only threw Clark Schmidt only threw 85 Innings so as much as he might not like it he can go to the bullpen and you want to be on a World Series winning team you need more than five starting pitchers oh yeah some teams AJ need 10 yeah look look at the Dodgers I mean they use they won a World Series the interesting for thing for me is what what are they goingon to do now because now they got to fix their offense all right we mentioned they needed a starter they got to find some offense now right with losing stto they got to find a first base is that Christian Walker is that do they go Pete Alonzo route where where do they go to find some offense now at first or third base and in the Outfield because they’re going to need more offense to continue this trajectory that they’re on which is to try to win Another World Series it’s Christian Walker or Cody Bellinger I think one of those too is what they’re going to put out there at first it’s going to be a pretty big difference in money too I mean Walker will do well but Cody Bellinger hit this year could be $32.5 million if he takes his buyout after this year so it’s a pricey guy it’s a very high upside player but now they can focus on the position players maybe they’ll add a reliever or two at a decent price although we talked earlier on foul territory about how they can certainly handle developing relievers better than most teams can I still think they go get at least one name that they like I think Aaron Boone earlier today was talking about Tanner Scott as a dude that the organization has liked I could see them making a play for someone like him but let’s get to the aftermath and then we’ll get to the other deal too the Red Sox and the Blue Jays were in we’ve seen some reports including Tim Healey saying the Mets were not in and they’re not in for the big starters they’re in for more of the mid tier but what do we think about the Blue Jays and the Red Sox missing out on Max freed because it looks like they made a play on him not sure about anybody else but it was an AL East battle and for me guys I didn’t really see the Blue Jays spending their big money on this player but clearly he was coveted by their front office they want to do something big yeah exactly I can tell by your facial expression Katz Boston now is in play for Corbin Burns if they don’t get him there’s not an elite number one starter on the market there’s good pitching after that but not an elite number one that you’re going to feel comfortable about out then you start to mess with the trade market I don’t see I don’t see the Corbin burn I don’t see if they wouldn’t go to 220 for Max which we don’t know you know maybe maybe Boston offered 225 and Max wanted to go to the Yankees we don’t know that but Corbin’s clearly going to be in the 250 to 275 range possibly higher but I think it’ll be under 300 but it’s going to be be quite a bit larger and if the Red Sox weren’t able to I don’t see him going after Corbin so hello Chris gets no deferrals no opt outs full no trade clause for Max freed again biggest contract ever for a left-handed pitcher fourth biggest ever for a starting pitcher and Joel Sherman reports the Rangers in the Red Sox were the other teams trying late on Max freed besides the Yankees interesting actually that’s good news for Rangers fans that they might be involved in some spending agreed agreed because the Rangers haven’t done anything we haven’t even heard the Rangers name mentioned at all other than with Nathan avaldi so this is good news but another you know you kind of hit on a little bit like great for the Yankees but where are the Red Sox we had Lou merone on today where are the Red Sox when are they gonna do it when are they gonna pull the trigger on one of these deals that gets them what they need they have the money they have the cache they’re the B Red Sox when are they going to do it and pull the trigger and finally get that piece that gets Fenway pack excited again because this this was when Lou morone Who works for the Red Sox he’s the radio guy one of their radio guys he says we need freed or Burns and then a bat well one of those guys is checked off to their division Rivals what do you do now Red Sox Nation where do you go what do you find and what is Craig brow doing because they keep saying we’re gonna spend we’re gonna spend we’re gonna spend and they haven’t spent anything so far this is not Craig brlo to me this is ownership and this is ownership being very vague same way they were vague with he Bloom vague not giving actual hey you know what you have 30 more million to go on the payroll you have hey you can’t go over this the threshold this threshold no it’s like a it’s it’s answers of like well do what’s best for the team okay well what about this make sure it’s what’s best for the team all the time just a vague vague ownership answers to the people that are higher up in the in the front office with the Red Sox is what’s put them in this situation yeah and just to cap it on the Yankees guys what do you think’s next and then we’ll get to what the Blue Jays did trade-wise what do you think’s next for the Yanks got to be a first baseman or a third baseman either you make you go bregman Walker along o you got to find some power and you’ve got to find somebody to play first or third base I mean it just has to happen if you can find both great I mean they’ve already talked about moving Chisum to second to cover for glaber right you got to find some sort of an outfielder somewhere along the way too so there’s still a lot of work for Brian Cashman to get done now will they come via trade or will they come via signing free agent style like this it’s going to be interesting to see but you mentioned the Red Sox calling the white socks how about the Yankees calling the white sock you could get Robert and crochet there’s your center fielder there’s another starting pitcher I know it’s a lefty but something you look into if you’re Brian Cashman I think that would be a baller move if you’re like hey let’s play The Run prevention game and have horses right let’s also keep in mind Garrick Cole’s a stud but Cole and judge are getting deep into their 30s Cole missed half the season last year so this is a really nice insurance policy to have at the top of the rotation heel pitched way more than he ever has in the past like Katz mentioned at the top here you got to have depth I mean you can’t put yourself in a position where if you lose one or two starters you’re screwed so good for the Yankees yeah exactly I mean nobody makes it through a season with five starters even seven is kind of a joke these days to make it through like that okay so if you want more on this trade Derek our pinstripe territory host covered it already so you can check out that show part of the ft Network stay here though we’ve got another deal that we’re covering in a moment but after we chat if you want to see his thoughts on what this does to the Yankees go check out that video go subscribe to his channel and now let’s cover the next move that just went down the Blue Jays trading for three-time gold Glover Andre Jimenez from the Cleveland Guardians I guess MN has got too expensive for Cleveland Cleveland does have some middle infield help in the pipeline but look at the Guardians sending a dude who’s one of the better gloves in baseball in the middle infields over to Toronto good for the Blue Jays they want to be active they want to switch up what they have clear clearly it hasn’t worked for them so were you surprised to see this one AJ first let’s cover the Cleveland side they made it to the ALCS they were a final four team in major league baseball this year this dude’s been one of the rocks for them I will say on the other side of the argument he’s not a star bat no he’s not but he could play defense but he he’s he swings it a couple years ago he had a nice year swing and that’s when he got the big contract so it’s in there can they get it out of him but do I see this coming I don’t think Cleveland would trade him because he’s not making a ton of money I mean I know you know you start getting into the1 million plus in Cleveland that’s a lot for them but man I feel like they could have kept him because this was a you know this was a guy that they were like all right this is when they signed him everyone’s like man this is one of their centerpieces for the next five six years and then they go out and trade him a couple years later I I was surprised just in the fact that Cleveland traded him not that blue jays went out and got them it’s a really nice piece to have on a good team so we’ll see what the Blue Jays do but the Blue Jays need to do more too much like the Red Sox the AL East just needs to do more the Orioles need to do more the Red Sox need to do more the Blue Jays needed more and then you have the race they clearly the Blue Jays clearly went out and had success two years ago made the playoffs obviously stuff happen how did they do it defense they had Matt Chapman at third base so they go out and they solidify that they have Dalton varo who was a platinum glove finalist in center field they’re wanting they’re clearly saying you know what maybe these Renovations that we did to Roger Center makes us more of a pitchers friendly Park if they were really in for Max freed then you know maybe maybe this is they’re going to push all in for the defensive part of it and say hey Vlad you just keep banging the ball around the ballpark and we’ll pick it Andre s menz numbers MoneyWise $10.5 million in 2025 $15.5 million in 2026 and then 2027 through 2029 I’m guessing those are options 23 A5 million yeah those are team options at that point and right now guys great glove 638 Ops a bunch of bags I’m guessing they don’t have everything in front of me right now a few win player three four win player oh those are guaranteed 20 27 to 2029 23 and a half million then 230 starts the option four- win player okay not might not be worth it to Cleveland based on the backat but worth it to others yeah but that’s why they sign the players like this and then they can trade them and try to get some back we don’t know what the return was we don’t know if they got money back we don’t know how you know we don’t know all that yet but that’s why teams like this love to trade these sign these guys excuse me so then they can trade them down the line when they get to the big money and that’s kind of what the Guardians did they had three four great years with Andre SZ like thank you for your service you’re now getting paid in Canadian dollars he’s 26 years old and yes because of the Canadian dollars he’s lost himself Millions today what’s the Ohio tax rate versus the Toronto tax rate not the same not the 14% that you’re getting tacked on top in Toronto I I know Ohio I know Ohio at least Cincinnati I know does I assume Cleveland does city tax that you pay pay like that yeah sport but it’s probably half that his number bet yeah bet it’s not even half he’ll be okay everyone don’t worry by by the way let me I know this is we we’re talking Andre SZ right now but I want to go back to Freed for a second here and uh I’m going to say this new country songs ask this who would you rather have Snell 32 years old for 512 or freed 31 for 8218 cats I mean I’ll take Fred really I’ll take freed Fred’s been consistent Snell’s ceiling is much higher but when Fred is out there he has been consistent Snell is been consistently healthier and you would think he’s figured it out but to me I think there’s a wider variance there for the two of them what about you AJ you want three more years of freed I take I take snow Annie took deferred money I take snow I’m sorry years because it’s five years and he and he took deferred money I mean that to me is is and it’s less on the hook I mean it’s it’s just less on the hook that if I’m the if I’m the Dodgers I’m like huh these are my options and I got the cheaper for Less years that’s and he took deferred money I mean to me that’s that seems like a no-brainer and the guy’s got two say Youngs not not a knock on Max freed but let’s be Blake snil has two sayong in the bank yeah comparing them no I hear that I hear that and and you know maybe I maybe I answered too quickly but I also think yeah I just think of the consistency I mean you’re compar you’re comparing Elite to Elite and it shows that the Yankees were in on them just couldn’t couldn’t go both is what Cashman said two more points on my end one it is very important for the Yankees to spread money out over more years they are big on that you even saw with SoDo they offered the extra year so that they can dance around and Pay Less on the luxury tax number that they go over that’s a big thing for the Stein burner family to not be pouring cash into the hands of the owners that essentially steal money from the league and get the revenue sharing which we talked about a lot today as well the Oakland A are barely spending more than the money that they’re getting in donations from the big Market team so a $27 million average for Max Fred is very different from what we’ve seen from some other starters but the overall number is large for him at 218 that’s why he gets the eight years and then lastly we got to spend a minute on the aftermath for the Braves so I was pretty adamant that there was no chance guys the Braves extend everyone this guy got to free agency clearly it wasn’t working out clearly they had conversations and the Braves also made a decision that they weren’t going to dance at this level even when they had him I think Fred would have been into an extension at one point but he took himself to free agency good for him he got paid but this was never going to happen once he hit the free agent Market the Braves are not playing in those waters for Max freed they’re not going I mean it wouldn’t have been a crazy number over what they pay Riley I think is the highest paid and like the low 20 is like 2ish million dollar range this would have been 27 but this is just not what they do you get the free agency when you’re a brave most likely if you’re part of that core you’re gone agree agree yeah and they’ll be okay guess there’s a free agent at the end of this year Ronald no alz oh alz I thought Ronald was no Ronald’s got year after year he’s got option after option like he’s got all those options I forgot yeah yeah they’re just they’re just like check 28 he’s good check check Atlanta’s got the reigning sa young winner they’ve got the best swing and Miss starter in the bigs coming back at some point this season probably in the first half maybe later in the first half Spencer schwell and Bach had a breakout Ronaldo Lopez was a brilliant signing I think they’ll be okay I would love to know what Max Max was offered because if you look at Spencer Strider and what he got like that is super lowb for what Strider could have gotten but he was way far away from free agency but based on what Max got I mean Strider I think’s on 76 OR7 78 million contract like that’s that’s why I don’t think it ever happened I think they probably wanted it to but I don’t think it ever was close we’ll talk more about this tomorrow we’ll have someone on just to talk about the freed signing we’re also talking tomorrow to Lance Lynn and Dallas Braden on the guest list for foul territory something crazy happens like Corbin Burns decides to sign tonight you’ll probably see some of us this evening on a little breaking news action things are going down and also Hammer territory will cover the aftermath for the Braves there it is beautiful shot of the skyline in Atlanta so make sure you check out that show as well Brad Scott and the rest of the crew covering what the Braves could do and saying goodbye to Max freed but hello Max freed to the Yankees Andre Jimenez to the Toronto Blue Jays more winter meetings coverage on the Ft Network baseball the way should be covered thanks for joining us we’ll see you on the next one subscribe to foul territory too
