State’s newest player be the answer to Steph and the Dub’s need to crawl back into contention we discuss ahead of Dennis schreuder’s debut tonight and as the Knicks prepare for a homecoming of a star tonight we preview an emotional return game for Carl Anthony towns NBA Today starts right now we start our show though with breaking news we here at NBA today are proud to be presenting this year’s nominees for the nouth memorial Basketball Hall of Fame throughout our show today but first we have some news the hall has updated its eligibility requirements it is reducing the waiting period for player candidates from three full seasons out of the game to just two seasons so with that as the backdrop let’s reveal some notable firsttime nominees headlining this class first up Carmelo Anthony he has scored the 10th most points in NBA history and made 10 all-star teams he also won three gold medals and scored the third most points in US men’s Olympic basketball history next up it is Sue bird she’s a five-time Olympic gold medalist four-time WNBA champion and two-time national champ at Yukon bird made 13 W all-star teams and is the alltime WNBA leader in assists also nominated Dwight Howard a three-time defensive player of the year and a 2020 NBA champ he’s made eight straight all NBA teams in his prime and led the magic to the 2009 n finals let’s take a look at the rest of the North American men’s nominees a couple of other notable names on the list here the 2008 US Olympic teams which included Carmello as well as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James from the coaching ranks here Billy Donovan longtime Gonzaga head coach Mark Fu are a few of the firsttime nominees as well as look there’s Robert Ory Big Shot Bob on the list as well two-time Allstar and champions with the 2011 Dallas Mavericks sha Maran will look to get the call this year a lot of names on this list really Excellence personified he is joined by his old son’s teammate Amari stmy with his first nomination and one more Super notable firsttime coach on the ballot currently eighth alltime in winds it is Doc Rivers we will keep showing you these names we know there is a lot of Excellence to take in here as we bring it to our set here with Brian Windhurst Tim McMahon and Chan gum joining me as well Brian just your reaction to these names that we’ve heard we didn’t know this was going to be Carmelo’s Hall of Fame year but it’s going to be Carmelo is going to headline this class I’m almost positive obviously he’s top 10 all-time score was one of the great players that that Knicks had over a 25 or 30e period quite frankly um and will be really well-liked by um you know the people he’s going to go in the hall with and joining those contemporaries so this this is going to be a celebration of Melo and I also think a celebration of subir one of the most decorated female players in the history of the sport uh not just on her college team but also on WNBA teams and on the national teams yeah and Dwight Howard’s also going to be a first ballot Hall of fer as he should be look his reputation got tarnished a bit in the second half of his career Dwight Howard had cemented his Hall of Fame case before he even left Orlando he had established that in the first half his career and then added a ring later on you know what’s funny the two names that you guys mentioned Dwight Howard carelo Anthony I know the rules are changing right two years removed or saying you’re away from the game you’re retired these guys in some ways in my mind they could still play well well Dwight was begging for a job like a few months ago so it’s it’s kind of nostalgic for me to see guys that I’m like oh man they could still play but on obviously onto bigger and better things right one name on the list though really interesting at least to me Robert ay here Tim yeah I mean listen one of the all-time great champions in the NBA Big Shot Bob for Reon all the playoff success the collection of rings that he earned throughout the course of his career is historic I hate to say it though it doesn’t make him a Hall of Famer to me to be a Hall of Famer based purely on your NBA career you at least have to have been an Allstar he was never an Allstar I don’t see how you can never be an All-Star and be a Hall of Famer yeah he is uh definitely a Hall of Fame role player but it’s Hall of Fame for um you know different standards I think Doc Rivers he’s got an interesting case I mean I I do think he will get elected um if not in this class at some point um he’s as you mentioned eighth all time in wins I think he’s fourth all time in playoff victories he’s a champion but he’s got a bit of a complicated uh you know resume because he’s also known for having these teams that blew these 3-1 leads frankly he’s coached some teams that have had huge expectations and big talent that have petered out in the playoffs but he does have an NBA cup I was going to say he sealed it he sealed it this week the only coach in NBA history to win both an NBA championship and an NBA cup title I didn’t even I didn’t need stats Williams in the stats and info group to look that one up no Schwarz Center more of Our Generation Amari STM it was cool to see his name there on the list Rookie of the Year with the Phoenix signs and then obviously we all know his tenure with the New York Knicks he’s a six-time All-Star and he’s someone I grew up watching his infectious smile when he played the game his for you know his fer ferocious nature attacking the rim I mean I love at guys and you you mentioned Carmelo leading the class but this is a guy that I grew up and fell in love with watching the game both in Phoenix and New York so congrats him as well yeah obviously micr fracture surgery sort of changed the way that we talked about the end of his career but dominant nonetheless we’re going to continue to reveal the 2025 Hall of Fame and then there’s Maya Moore the six-time All-Star one four championships with the Minnesota links WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2011 WNBA Finals MVP in 2013 W MVP in 2014 she also has won two Olympic golds in 2012 and 16 and then Cynthia fowls dominated the paint in her WNBA career winning titles with Minnesota in 2015 and 17 and was the MVP of the finals both times also an eight-time All-Star a four-time defensive player of the year and the 2017 MVP so here’s a look at the full list of women’s nominees another firsttime nominee of note six-time Allstar alltime six time all time Sheniqua holds claw as well as three-time all WNBA team and 2005 Champion with the Sacramento monarchs Tisha penero and then in 1982 the chenet state lady wolves became the first women’s basketball team from an HBCU to make it to the NCAA national title game so Chan we have to dive into this star studded group particularly these three players behind us what did these goliaths bring to the game should I go one-on-one right here uh let’s start with Sue bird everyone knows her for leading the WNBA and total assist the ultimate point guard but what I remember her for is the 2020 CBA negotiations where she really stepped up and helped us as a member of the executive committee that I served on alongside my sister to help continue to push the game forward at that point she was in her bonus years of basketball but showing up as a legend in front of the league saying hey we need to bet on women I loved her voice in that regard now let’s go to mayore actually you know what let me say my for last okay syia FS I had to guard her in the paint that woman had an ultimate turnaround um just her ability to finish this was a part of the Minnesota LINK Squad that won I believe four titles they were truly a dynasty she was the center she was and the thing that I really gave me Nightmares honestly when it came to Silvia FS she could like only make a living going off of her right then later in her career she’s like all right I’ll use the left then she truly became unguardable led to that 2017 MVP career one of the best closed players I ever played against but all around players Maya Moore to this day she is the hardest player in the history of mankind because I played against guys too that I have ever had to guard she had everything in her game not only just being able to out physical you as a big guard in the paint having that amazing turnaround mid-range shot and then of course she just like kill you with a dagger in transition athletic just a winner a competitor I think I only got like one or two wins against her in my whole career one came my freshman year at Stanford where we broke yukon’s win streak and then plenty of losses unfortunately when I was in the w we might have got her once or twice but many people say that like she is goated in my opinion this is a tremendous class and they really put the W forward uh the last two decades an absolutely stacked class here of nominees and we’re going to continue to reveal more as our show rolls on we also have the NBA resuming tonight with 26 games in action so let’s go Coast to Coast around the association we’re going to start here in Dallas with Luca donic his team is going to take on the Clippers however the five-time all-nba guard was ruled out due to that left heel contusion that caused him to miss a couple of practices this week Tim is this an issue that could persist for longer than just one game what do you think uh it’s a day-to-day deal it’s not a serious concern but obviously they wanted to clear up uh he’s going to sit tonight and it’s say we’ll see on Saturday and it’s it’s a shame because he’s coming off the best performance of his season and maybe the NBA season with that 45o triple double in Golden State okay so for now we will continue to monitor this day-to-day situation sticking in the Westco that’s where KD and Booker they are home against the Pacers the sun they sit at 6th in the standings they’re 13-2 with KD in the lineup but without them they’re one and N so Chan is the key for Phoenix just have Durant out there on the floor should I save us some time yes they need him on the floor every time because we all know how they started off the season they look like a front runner a lot of people was it Wendy that included like that said they could potentially uh make it to the NBA finals they need him on the floor but more importantly oh it wasn’t you it was probably someone else oh he’s lying to me he he is the exactor here to make sure they can push for a championship run for Phoenix to Orlando SGA and jdb they made their cross country trip after losing in the NBA Cup finals in Vegas on Tuesday night after tonight’s game against a tough magic team then they have to go to Miami on Friday to take on the heat it’s a pretty brutal travel schedule if you enjoy I don’t know sleeping in your own bed but anyway Brian will the thunder get back to their winning ways against the magic I don’t know what you’re talking about according to the NBA standings they’re on a five-game win streak Tuesday’s game did not count they’re the hottest team in the NBA I reject that premise obviously they need to come back with a better offensive display Orlando has been awesome at home this year but they don’t have their two best players they should should bounce back tonight we’ll see if everybody is feeling good for Miami tomorrow all right uh how often will Steph and Dennis shuder though share the floor we have an inside look at the Warriors game game plan ahead of Dennis’s debut against the Grizzlies tonight plus all the musty moments from the Marquee names we relive the careers of the nouth Hall of Fame nominees Carmelo Anthony Dwight Howard Sue bird and more and speaking of Marquee LeBron James back [Music] in for
