looks like the socks have added to the rotation just not [Applause] immediately what is going on everybody welcome back to red seat radio my name is Corbin and we got a signing to talk about folks the Red Sox have made their next move for this MLB off season we got a lot to break down in this one so what we’re going to do is we’re going to take a look at who they signed why they signed him what their impact could be to ultimately figure out whether or not this is a signing we like or we don’t like thank you all very much for clicking on this one let’s get into it okay so obviously we got to start with who the Red Sox signed right that would be the entire point of this video Corbin come on figure it out just a couple of hours ago Jeff passon reported that the Boston Red Sox have signed Patrick sandavol to a 2-year 18.25 million deal now this deal is really interesting because of one big reason it’s the second half of this Jeff passon report Patrick sandavol is coming off of Tommy John’s surgery with the Outlook of coming back in the second half of 2025 and being fully ready to go for the entirety of 2026 now I know immediately people are going to be pretty upset about that they’re going to be upset by the fact that the Red Sox signed this guy to a two-year deal and he’s not even going to be able to perform for half of it but let’s take a look at the actual contract itself this is a 2-year $18.25 million deal even if Patrick sandal doesn’t come back in the second half of 2025 and is only pitching in 2026 18.25 million for who Patrick sandal could be could be an absolute steal if we take a look at the statistics here Patrick sandall has pitched two full seasons as a starter in Major League Baseball the combined totals for those seasons are a 350 erra a 363 FIP a 121 erra plus so 21% above League average production if we’re taking a look at how he compares to the average pitcher with a pretty high whip of 1. 1425 mostly due to a walk rate that is a bit higher than one would like that is something the Red Sox could absolutely tweak with right Andrew Bailey’s pretty good at getting pitchers to throw more strikes the entire pitching Mecca that has become the Boston Red Sox is pretty good at that so if you take a look at the statistics here he’s ceiling wise a potential Frontline starting pitcher maybe not an ace maybe not a number one but hey a number two maybe a number three I think is more realistic but that’s still sort of a Frontline starting pitcher here and I really really like the fact the Red Sox picked this guy up for what would be even if it’s just one season a one-year $18.25 million deal because even if he ends up being a number three that’s an absolute steal they offered Nick petta a oneyear $19 million deal for him to be your number five starting pitcher in this rotation to get a number three for the for less than that in my opinion is an absolute win and I think a lot of people are pretty negative about this kind of contract because immediately your minds go to James Paxton right oh boy it’s another James Paxton he’s going to come back he’s going to get hurt again he’s not going to be the same pitcher he was and I think that’s why a lot of Red Sox fans when they see these types of deals immediately go towards the negative route but Patrick sandal isn’t James Paxton I think there’s a big reason for that it’s because Patrick sandal right now is just 27 years old next season or going into 25 he’s going to be 28 and if and his full season with the Red Sox is going to be 29 years old to me that makes a really big difference here in terms of how Patrick sandal could bounce back this is in my opinion a really smart Savvy move by the Boston Red Sox because if he comes back you’re saving a whole lot of money here now so far we’ve only been talking really about the positive surrounding the Patrick sandavol move but I think it’s only right that we take a look at both sides of the coin because there’s obviously some pretty big risk involved here with signing a guy who’s not going to be ready to go right away the first and obvious risk is what is he going to look like when he comes back is he going to be able to produce the way he produced in his last two full seasons at the major league level because even last year before he got injured it wasn’t exactly super fantastic in fact it was a 508 ER with an 83 erra plus which is 177% below League average production but what I will say with those inflated numbers on paper boy does that not look good right but at the same time he had a FIP down at 3.87 meaning he was getting incredibly unlucky on the mound also meaning he was performing much better on the mound than his erra leads on maybe that has something to do with playing for a pitiful Angels team but maybe you could just call me crazy for that one he also had his strikeout numbers around where they’re supposed to be he was not giving up a ton of home runs which is something Patrick sandal has been pretty solid with his entire career so you sit there and you look at it and you say okay yes it was bad on paper last year but could it be better going forward I think it could be based on especially the fact that his FIP and strikeout numbers remain pretty similar to his career statistics but there is obviously that risk people come back from Tommy John and sometimes they just simply aren’t the same pitcher the other sort of negative side of the is signing with Patrick sandal is pretty clear as well and that is the fact that he’s not going to impact the immediate success of this Red Sox team we’ve heard it before this is not the first time we’ve heard hey we’re going to sign a guy who’s coming off at Tommy John but he’s going to be ready to go for the second half of the season in fact the last time we heard that was Liam Hendricks right when they signed Liam Hendricks it was he’s got a goal of coming back in August he’s going to help this team down the stretch and that just never came to fruition there’s a real possibility here that Patrick Sandoval’s contract with this socks team ends up being simply a oneyear contract and that does not do anything to put the Red Sox in a better position to win in 2025 to me this makes sense on a couple of different levels but I also think it kind of only makes sense if the Red Sox are going to continue to add this is a move for a team that is still building towards the future as opposed to trying to win now it’s a great move for a team that has already established what they’re going to do in the now and want to add to the future but when when we’ve had an off season like we’ve had with the Red Sox where they’ve been promising all this stuff they’ve been missing out on free agents we don’t really know what the full picture of this off season’s going to look like just yet I think there could be some panic in people’s eyes when they see oh boy they’re signing people for 26 and not 2025 necessarily they’ve already given up on this off season I don’t think that’s the case but I do think it’s absolutely worth mentioning in this conversation so overall taking a look at what’s going on with this contract I got to tell you I actually really like this I understand that there is some risk I understand that people are going to be upset because this isn’t an immediate impact people want that immediate hey this is going to make our team better right now signing and obviously I still do as well but if you’re taking a look at it in a vacuum just this signing alone not with the context of everything that’s going on in this offseason just this singular signing it’s a really smart move in my opinion the ceiling is incredibly high for Patrick sandal he could very well be a really solid I think at the bare minimum back half of your rotation starter but I think sort of mid ceiling here you’re talking about a guy who could sit in the middle towards the top half of this rotation and be a really strong force for this team going forward I think MoneyWise it makes a lot of sense even if this ends up being a one-year deal again $18.25 million at this point in MLB is nothing for a middleof the rotation starter you’re getting another left hander in here which is absolutely fantastic the rotation becomes a bit more versatile right you could start to do different things with this rotation mix and match it a little bit figure out the matchups quite a bit I really like that move I like the fact that he is Young I like the fact that he’s not even in his age 30 season yet gives me a lot of Hope as to how he’s going to be able to bounce back coming back from Tommy John surgery and I got to be honest with you guys I think we have a much different opinion as fans about this Red Sox medical staff than is actually reality in all reality honestly the Red Sox medical staff is widely revered in major league baseball players really like what the Red Sox are doing medically with their players despite all the injuries we have seen over the last couple of years so I do have some faith that the Red Sox medical staff will be able to get him back up to par with what he’s doing and then you hand him off to Andrew Bailey Justin Willard Kyle bod and the Craig breslo regime right now and I think we could see some really really fun stuff from Patrick sandal so I absolutely really like this move in a vacuum again if we’re talking about looking at this move in terms of the offseason as a whole it’s not enough it’s obviously not enough for me right you’re going to need someone else who is going to make an immediate impact on this rotation you’re going to need someone else who’s going to make an immediate impact on this team outside of the rotation they can’t be done yet and I think that’s very important to note but I also think it’s okay to understand that and still appreciate that this is a good deal you can do both you don’t have to pick aside that this is terrible because they aren’t doing anything else or this is really great because they aren’t doing anything else you could be somewhere in the middle I think that’s exactly where I am I understand that this is a good deal I still think the Red Sox absolutely need to do more for their rotation to bolster it in 2025 or this move is going to look like a bit of a copout it’s going to look like a bit of a we’re going to go the cheap route we’re going to try and keep getting these Bargain Bin basement dwelling type deals when in reality if you go and get someone else this move look absolutely fantastic so overall I really like it I really like it for what it is not in terms of the entire context of the offseason I hope that makes some sense to you guys but let me know in the comment section down below what do you guys
