it’s the match preview today we’re going to be talking about Lucent Town traveling to Ashton gate on boxing day to mix it with Bristol City I was going to say the team that had the the former best manager in the league but I thought that was quite a dated reference now because he was two managers ago but with me to preview this game it’s my co-host it’s Mark Ryman how we getting on Mark yeah good obviously off the back of a win um and we’ve got at least one player back maybe a few out but uh well let’s see how we get on at least we’ll have had a few skins by then at boxing day right exactly yeah look it’s one step forward a couple steps back hashy returns but we’ll talk about that in team news uh it’s an interesting one but at the at the moment it’s a case of seven losses on the spin away from home and it it cannot continue but you did say that we won a game so let’s just jump straight in and recap that glorious dominance 2-1 win against Derby it’s the [Music] recap so that game happened luten Town absolutely sucking for 88 minutes and then blink and you miss it what a turnaround wasn’t that yeah I mean I I I did think we started to get um some real dominance in the first half without creating anything both sides absolutely determined to kick it up in the air as as much as possible and we did get it on the floor though we played a couple of passes we were able to get in behind and I thought Chong looked really effective again um and uh you know that was sort of crosscom shot that was saved by The Keeper in the first half probably our only real effort of note um but as things have been recently the sort of second half after a good sort of couple of minutes then dwindled down and and they took control and you know maybe unlike Stoke they were able to put put a chance away um and take advantage and from then on I just couldn’t see us getting into back into the game at all I I I couldn’t believe it but you know on comes the man on comes the moment right um and and it all changes yeah uh you’re right to say we weren’t bad at all in the first half it’s about taking taking that pressure and actually making something happen out of it but the subs and and Rob has received a lot of I don’t want to say abuse a lot of um you know all the managers in the stands have been very vocal about his subs and how they haven’t really changed games but these Subs they changed the games cuz Cy wardro whipped the balls in yeah um for the first P had the shot from outside the box that went in off Tom Holmes’s ass and and they were all effective Subs they really were because um the momentum pretty much I’d say was swinging towards us like yes we weren’t exactly penetrating the final third that well or that much but the subs all got involved in that way it did change the game yeah they did all the subs did um I think Zack Nelson played a really good part as well um and you know his substitutions have been well lacking I think in in recent games more than more than them not being effective they just not been there I mean um we went the entire game against Stoke without making a single substitution barely made any against Blackburn when we could have made them earlier um and so yeah I mean the subs that he made at this you know triple triple substitution one in one go is is pretty unusual for Rob and yeah all of them played their part I thought they were all very good coming on I think KY fair play to him I think we should probably single him out slightly I mean we talked about P quite a lot but I think KY woodro deserves some credit because he gets enough stick when he comes on doesn’t play very well um but often that’s down to how he’s being utilized as is the case for a lot of our players I thought he was he was really good and obviously helped set up one of the goals and you know looked really effective when he was crossing in um as as he did when when he came on in the Premier League as well I think um Tyler already mentioned it against Bournemouth at the end of at the end of last season so yeah all of them were fantastic and obviously you know we we just got a hope that that we we kind of utilize our Squad a little bit more and it shows Rob that they can come on and make a difference yeah well he he mentioned in his press of that he’s reiterated essentially that a few players will be going out namely I think he mentioned that there’ll be loans for Joe Johnson and Zack Nelson the latter of which obviously I’m a big fan of Joe Johnson but Zack Nelson I feel like since he announced himself to the Luton fans with that fantastic strike against QPR and the fact that he’s come on he’s played sort of different positions he he can carry the ball really well he has a lovely one two give and go with a lot of players as well and he came on he did a job of right wing back as well personally unless we’re going to replace him with with someone that is a specialist right wing back I think it could be an error letting him go out on loan yeah well I tend to agree but I also think that both him and JJ are victims of our formation right they’re both they both really their preferable positions aren’t positions that are going to suit what Rob Edwards is determined to play u we know JJ’s best as a left back and we probably Z Nelson you’d argue what is a number 10 um so neither of those positions are are available in in the systems that we’re playing and I think that’s you know part part of the issue he said already there he came on his right back we’ve had tah Chong as right back um as well and that just says everything with something we’ve been saying so okay if he does let them go out on loan then he needs to make sure that we bring in players that suit the system better but you’re right they are very both very good players very promising and I hope that we do see them more regular in a len Shir soon yeah completely agree with that it’s just a shame because um back when we were growing up watching Luton the the youth conveyor belt was in full flow some of our Fondest Memories are watching some of the players that came through the Youth Academy you know Matt spring Matt Taylor sha Evers some some fantastic players Paul McLaren you know players there was just so many yeah so many and uh maybe that was a victim of the circumstances because David ker was I don’t want to say asset stripping but happy to sell players and not bring in new players so we had to rely on the Youth Academy plus we had an amazing Youth Academy at the time but that does take me very nicely into what team could we see at Ashton gate it’s the team new [Music] news so for team news Rob Edward said in his prematch that dky hashioka is likely back but there are one or two nameless players who um weren’t named but they could be missing so uh for this Liam Walsh still suspended this could be his last one no he’s done for the whole Christmas period isn’t he this is game two of his suspension game two yeah yeah oh well Alfie Dy could be back mid Jan I heard in the ltst Pod they I think they’re targeting Preston Amari Bell reeberg Ruel Walter shanon Baptist Ted mangi and Tom loia the Tom loia one is just such a kick in the teeth yeah I feel so bad for him I mean youve got to laugh but I just feel so bad for him because he was he was coming back yeah he was doing it and then and then he what’ he do like probably trip down stairs or something just it does seem to be the way was that P that did that I’m sure P had a freak injury like that at some point I think John still said one of his legs was longer than the other or something like that never not injured under John still as well wasn’t he um but yeah good news about hashioka sorry just to bring it back slightly to to what we’re supposed to be talking talking about um who knows what the other players are going to be is this going to be what we think is going to be the formation or what we’d like because if it’s what we think then it’s going to be a 343 right I can’t talking about what we like because we might be you know part of the 10,000 managers but exact essentially our choice doesn’t matter um yeah I think oh it’s it’s difficult to see him changing it despite how poor we’ve been in that system away from home um you know we come up a t we come up against a team um who have got again very good wide players Fair bit of pace as well and you know someone in the in Scott twine who can be pretty much anywhere within 25 yards and score just not having that security of marvelous back there or back three at least back three sorry a Midfield three just scares me as it did against Blackburn and it happened so that’s that’s the worry but I I guess that dii hasok go straight back into the team you’d imagine um other than that I wouldn’t imagine too many changes unless they’re in force I’d like to think that away from home Rob wouldn’t be so stubborn as to not play a three in Midfield especially against a team that plays a three in Midfield especially when they have like some pretty good players Knight bird I don’t really know much about MCU but um but I know bird and Knight I think they were both at Derby yeah they’re very busy and you know what as always games are lost and won in Midfield and you know if you don’t match up especially in the middle of the park you’re losing the battle before the games even started and then yeah well we talk about that when we uh talk about the opposition but you mentioned Twi I’m I’m terrified of MTI but me too that’s the thing and if don’t play Wing backs if we we line up again with Moses and and hashioka you know or or or Chong and hashioka they’re gonna get all the joy of the World Behind Chong so you’d think he would adapt it especially as it’s just not clicking it’s not happening away from home but as I said it doesn’t really matter what we say because he he’ll do what he does and uh you know potentially we could be looking at eight streets defeats because Bristol City they like to score yeah I mean I said it before the Blackburn game I’ll say it again away from home particularly I want marvelous nber in my side okay he didn’t have the best game against Swansea um as was rightly pointed out um but you know apart from that he’s he’s made a big difference when he’s been playing since he’s been back fit I I I don’t get it I don’t understand why you would you would leave that game out three for those players that you mentioned to run straight through um but you know we he said he’d learned from Norwich or or use the positives from Norwich before Blackburn and we didn’t see it so I’m not counting my chickens although I completely agree with what you saying yeah look uh there’s no point in even talking more about the team news because whatever will be will be K SAR SAR OD Lang sign all that new year um because we got new year coming up doesn’t really matter I guess we’ll see what happens you know we could talk about what we want till we’re blue in the face but doesn’t really matter never mind but let’s have a look to the Past because it’s time for previous [Music] incounters as always you need to be the Inception of luten town football club I’m using F mob today and I got nine games care to guess the spread Ryan yeah sorry that face is me trying to think about what the spread is um nine games let’s see if I can count to nine this time lenth won most of them I think think we’ve got a good record against Bristol City actually even when we first came up oh I’m going to go six two and one draw on the head wow that’s incredible what do I win it’s a Christmas miracle I’ve got something right and I counted to nine yeah well done you win the right to edit this podcast no I’m all right thank you yeah so any of them remind you of uh Fonda times yeah P Banger in the first season under Graham Jones I was at that game um yeah sort of came out of nowhere that game it was 3-0 I think top of my head um but it really did come out of nowhere in a season where we were we were struggling all the time um that was incredible um and of course the 3-2 turnaround who I whenever it was 2018 sorry 2020 2021 um I know you told me before we went on air as well completely forgot when it was but um was it the first season we got into the playoffs um no it was mid mid-table mediocre mid table one the Ken and dewbury Hall season um two-nil down to Win It 3-2 yeah um those two stick in my head um we’ve had some tough days as well against them home loss in the Ashton gate 3-0 the other way around on the same season we beat them I think so yeah I that that was a that was a tough game and there’s been a few few of those too um we’ve had some dingdong with Bristol City on and off the pitch as well just for some reason they just we’ve we seem to just have a have an issue with one another I think Cal naith going there and and uh as you said calling Pearson the best manager in the league was uh was one of the reasons certainly well there was that game when they beat us 2-n yeah and that was in our playoff season yeah they beat they beat us at Ashton gate and uh nay Smith was like man of the match he was he was Sublime we couldn’t do anything we could not get the ball beyond their defense um we were absolutely useless that game and um and nay Smith came in on the tunnel cam afterwards on on Bristol City’s uh socials and was giving it all the yes like mate We Made You relevant in football like before us you were just a a journey man and uh and we got him into the the the the men’s FIFA Team of the Year or whatever it is on on FIFA or FC 20 whatever whatever they call it these days I remember that P Banger very well because it happened right in front of me it was right in front of the tunnel I sit above the tunnel and I was I was saying to the guy next to me Rich I was like what is p doing out there what is he doing he just cuts in just bends it like from the edge of the box I was like that shut me up yeah I think that was the last time I’ve like properly slagged off a player in the in the stands it’s been a good few years yeah I mean it was yeah it’s good to hear yeah I mean that cutting and shot was almost a carbon copy of the goal he scored away at Arrington Stanley in the season we went up as well um yeah he does that very s he did yes he does doesn’t he take note ridiculous that was such a good goal and I think that was probably like the first and maybe only complete performance we had under greme Jones yeah no I’d have you right there definitely we we absolutely out of nowhere actually I go barnesy away was up there because we were sing like 3 nil up within about 5 seconds I was there as well I couldn’t believe that either that Butterfield goal yeah like what is happening yeah your shirt reminds me of uh of Butterfield yeah okay SS yeah the shirt I haven’t got the beard yet but uh keep working on it all I I liked uh Jacob Butterfields uh I wish he played more like uh I think people s misremember that he was actually pretty good he was yeah he went to one extreme or the other he was like non-legal or pure Perlo and he was nothing in between it was a bit of an odd one but yeah we didn’t really see him is he he went to Australia didn’t he he went to Australia and then I think he ended up at scun thought I think so we actually did go non League this transition yeah yeah I think scum was where started his career or he th from gun thought maybe I’m not 100% sure but I remember that goal that was such a good hit it was like Henry Lansbury’s hit wasn’t it the way the ball sort of came out and just like walloped it straight away yeah fantastic really good um but let let’s get some thoughts from the opposition shall we let’s kick this over to Phil take it away Phil thank you OE and thank you Mark isn’t it nice to be talking off the back of a win as painful as it was at times isn’t it just such a different complexion on a whole week when you’re going off a three points thankfully Kenna wor Road has done the trick again today from the opposition preview point of view I’m going to be speaking to Ben me um Ben is a YouTuber and a thoroughly stringent uh Robins fan um and you can follow him at Ben me bcfc on on X or Twitter as well um he’s been answering some questions opposed to him as usual with the opposition preview um with a view to um looking ahead to our game at Ashton gate on boxing day in regards to my own personal opinions um just to sort of back up what I said on the on the Luton show uh really at the weekend that we filmed at the brickies I’m very very pleased that we got three points I think it’s another sort of a needed three points uh I’ve I’ve mentioned before on a number of occasions that we really do need to make sure that we’re continuing in our good form at home um in terms of picking up points um it would be lovely if we were able to to be a bit better at home in terms of the way that we’re playing Rob Edwards alluded to that and he said that we’re not playing the way that he wants us to play but ultimately we’re being effective in turning 90 minutes into three points uh at our own place so boxing day is going to be an interesting one because we are obviously back on the road it’s going to be really really tough um the reality of it is that we’ve got a couple of trips down the M4 back and forth back and forth and um truth be told I’d be happy with a couple of points if we won one and lost one I’d be happy with that as well um but we do need to to stop this this rut that we’re in about losing away from home there’s a number of different teams that are pretty poor in the championship away from home and make no doubt about it we’re one of them uh I’m looking at the likes of Derby the likes and Norwich but we are definitely one of them um to only have four points at this stage away from home um is is pretty poor so um yeah it’s going to be a tough one but uh we we’ll go in Hope rather than expectation but uh but let’s hope that we get a little bit of a a Christmas miracle this time last year on boxing day we were lording the fact that we’ just gone a away to Sheffield United and W 32 with a couple of lucky deflections if we could have that same situation again this particular weekend well it’s not even the weekend is it it’s it’s a Thursday but um if we can have that particular situation this Boxing Day then uh then we’ll be all for it but uh I pose a few questions um in the in the upcoming Clips uh to Ben and let’s hear what he had to say so Ben first and foremost it’s been a bit of a a tough month for Bristol City uh when I look back at the fixtures over the course of December you suffered a 3-0 loss away to pompy uh you’ve had a couple of draws in the middle one one which is fair enough against Sunderland but you come off the back of a two-nil loss um away to West Brum so my my first question is what’s the sort of General Vibe at the minute in the club is it’s been a really tough month coming off the back of three disappointing uh results if we being completely honest the vibe around Ashton gate at the moment isn’t too great if I’m honest I mean our away form recently has been awful um and then you know when we’re coming back to Ashton gate um we’re playing we’re playing better but we’re still not just taking any chances and not winning games you’ve seen that too many times this season where we’ve been on top not taking any chances not created enough chances when we’re on top in games and then it comes back to bite Us in the ass really and you know we concede and as soon as we con seeed go one down you know heads drop and we don’t really have a plan B if that makes sense as soon as as soon as we go one0 down so you know we’ve been on top in games it’s not like we haven’t been like completely awful but when we are on top of games um we’re not doing enough to score goals and basically take advantage of being in top of the game and like I said that’s that’s come back to bite us multiple times so far this season I appreciate your honesty there Ben yeah it sounds like it’s it’s been a bit of a been a bit of a tough one uh recently but um the the good thing is you’re back to home Comforts at ashlon gate and uh even better than that from your point of view is that you’re going to be playing Luton who’s got an atrocious ha record at the minute uh with a number of away defeats in a row so um what’s your thoughts on on the game and what do you think the score is going to be obviously we’re back at Ashton gate though thankfully um on boxing day against Luton but still I’m I’m still not too confident just coming off the last time game against QPR is you know a team sort of in the lower mid-table area of of the championship this season and we Absolut batter them I thought is we we’ve played really well in all honesty and but like I said just previously we didn’t take our chances enough we probably could have scored at least three or four um I probably should have scored at least four we were on top I think we had about 70 75% possession during that game and you know we were going to up in early on the second half I think and then a silly mistake cost us I had to go back one all and then we didn’t really know what to do to to get back into the game so it I’m hoping we don’t get a repeat of that on um boxing day but I also wouldn’t be surprised I think score prediction wise as much as I don’t like to to say I think it’s hard to predict a win at the moment um cuz like I said we’re not playing badly we’re not you know it’s not like I’m predicting us to lose or expecting us to lose but I just don’t see us doing enough to win at the same time so I think it could be a bit of a board draw if I’m being honest onboxing I’ll go for a one all but you know I’ll keep the hope that after that really poor performance at West Brom uh on Sunday that you know we’ll get a response and we pick off three points but I just don’t know if I can see it so um another opposition uh previewer that uh that doesn’t back themselves against Luton Town despite the fact that Lon are playing away from Kenworth road so Ben um one of the one of the people that stands out for me um as an opposition uh fan looking out from the outside in against Bristol city is um how you’ve got some Talent uh towards the top end of of your pitch and uh particularly you got Scott twine who’s we know is a piece um he’s a specialist isn’t he reality of it is he’s the he’s the he’s the championship Beckham if you want to go that far I’m not sure I do but um you’ve also got the likes of Anis MTI um as well who’s he’s a fantastic player but who for you stands out as the star player so far for you this season this is a really weird question because I don’t think we’ve had really any standout players um we’ve had multiple players that have looked good at Parts um but we haven’t had one sort of standout player who’s been really consistent in you know giving seven or eight out of 10 performances every single week I think sometimes so far this season you could pick out the Defenders know mcnali had a good game at Sunderland Dicky’s played well um viners had a couple good games as well in even in the Midfield you know Jason Knight Max BD in Center Midfield who have probably been the most consistent out of everyone in all honesty but then again you’re not getting you know eight nine out of 10 performances um every couple of weeks which is really what you need and then you mentioned the attacking sort of threatens twine and mimti mim’s look good in part this season but again it’s just not consistent enough and none of them really are doing enough in the final third to sort of Warrant you know creating chances or scoring goals and being named as sort of the one player we can sort of you know stand on in in in a sense of you know someone who can pick us up and you know like I said create chance to score goals um especially when on topping game so it’s a really tough question but I mean I think if I got picked someone it’s got to be the Midfield I mean Jason Max bird I think Jason Knights only really had one bad game this year and it was away at portal so we lost three and everyone was awful that day so I think you know it’d be harsh not to pick that Midfield but like I said it is it’s hard to pick anyone who’s been a sort of a standout performer so far this season but that doesn’t mean they they’ve all been you know bad in a sense I think everyone’s just been sort of you know Bristol City like you know we’re sat mid think we’re the middle of everything so I think it’s just sort of you know everyone’s doing okay if that makes sense but thank you for having me on and um all the best for the rest of the season looking forward to visiting Ken North Road um at the end of the season I believe it is or you know one of our last away games of the year but good luck after boxing day for thought it was quite funny how Ben’s uh falling into the Trap it feels like it’s a weekly occurrence now that uh people have no confidence against us and uh and fall into the Trap of going for a bit of a score draw or a bit of a board draw um I don’t think that a lot of these play people um look at us particularly in depth which is uh which is why it’s one of those things where we do these opposition previews it’s it’s quite interesting see how people perceive luten as well as get a bit of an insight into their own side so um he’s gone for a one all draw um he’s highlighted the fact that they’ve got a decent Midfield which could be really interesting for Luton because um I don’t want to I don’t want to um besch the name of Jordan Clark I’ve been an advocate for him over the course of the season when it’s been quite difficult and people have gotten his back at times um I’ve actually been more anti Krauss than uh than Jordan Clark but if their strength is in the Midfield it could be quite interesting to see how much possession we do or don’t have uh because the reality of it is that we play a lot of balls from Back to Front quite quick and there’s been some quite interesting figures on that on Lut Town facts and figures Matt quino has also done a lovely piece on on X where he explains about the style of play that we’ve got and we do go from front to back very quick um and it could be a really difficult game for us um on boxing days so we’ll we’ll see how it goes I’m hopeful um I’m hopeful that we we T turn this tide um away from home and uh like I say it’ll be an absolutely wonderful uh present for us all but uh I’ll leave you guys in the capable hands of olle and mark and um as always come on you at us but also in the interim have a wonderful wonderful Christmas uh to those of you that celebrate it and I’ll see you in the new year at Norwich take care guys all the best thank you Phil uh um enjoy the break because we’re going to be taking a week off after this one we’ll be reconvening ahead of QPR well we’ll talk about that a little bit later but Ryman who are you worrying about in this lineup we’ve named most of them um yeah I know we so you said mimti me yeah me too mimti is my biggest concern anyone who plays out on on out wide um and has got some Pace about them um and can create um as as has done Us in all season we we can’t cope Scott twine is someone who I think most Luton fans will be very familiar with we were linked with him a few times um has been I I think he’s been excellent nearly every Club he’s been I know he didn’t pull up trees for Bernie but he didn’t really get many chances when he did come when he did come on in that Championship season you know he showed what he was about you know give give away a free kick anywhere 25 30 yards out of your peril but also the biggest worry is and stuff that you’ve already said PRI Swansea the old cutback because it’ll be him on the edge of the box and he ain’t missing so those two yeah that that’s that’s a fair point I I am very worried about twine because one thing we love to do is give space to attacking midfielders just invite the the shot and you know and as the players will line up in front of him it’s just like go on mate Bend It Like Beckham then he’s just going to p Bender into the corners um yeah I’m worried I’m very worried it’s great signing and I think um he’s one we should have picked up like considering he’s so out of favor of Burnley U we should have picked him up after from we should have picked him up from MK to be honest yeah should have picked him up you know but hey no no point crying over spilled milk right yeah we were closely linked enough for him to score against us though so unfortunately naturally um right but now it’s time for some score [Music] predictions so I’ve gone for a 2N home win um you’re right it can’t keep going on like this but until I see some consistent evidence that it’s going to change I can’t really change my predictions we have this same conversation prior to Blackburn um and I’m pretty sure I predicted a two-nil loss there as well um and and look you know I I hope I’m wrong I hope that he changes the formation switches things up puts some solidity in the Midfield that we don’t crumble once we concede a goal or just give people the freedom of the six-yard pots to shoot but that’s what we tend to do away from home and you know yeah there’s not not much optimism there you can tell so yeah let’s just hope that um half the Bristol City team have been on the Lash for Christmas and um and uh we can take advantage of it but yeah 2-0 yeah that’s why clubs have their Christmas parties like a week before the Run of Christmas period yeah uh so I’ve gotone one1 purely based on the fact that Rob Edwards told us all that he’s doing everything in his power to change it so it has to change right um because he always knows what he’s talking about um yeah so one1 for me I guess we’ll see I’m not very optimistic though look I mean he might do and and we’ll be the first well we won’t be the first because we’re not recording until pre QPR but we will be when we are recording you know the first that holds our hand up and say that’s brilliant that’s great and we’re really pleased that he’s done it but you know we need to to see that a bit more consistently let’s hope for some changes at least right can you imagine if we’re recording pre QPR and we we’ve got nine points from Bristal City swans and uh Norwich no and norch can you imagine no I can’t can you it could happen you know stranger things have happened yeah I mean obviously if that happens then we’ll have a much cheerier match preview and and postmatch phoning which would be a nice change I remember when I when we had the chat um pre-season and I said oh it’ be nice to it’ be nice to the post matches because we can talk about a few more wins for a change because you know we just come down with the Premier League and yeah I guess you guess I need to rethink that so yeah it’d be nice but uh yeah just just a bit of change you know I don’t expect nine points but just something different will be good it would especially backto back away games now where we notoriously are so bad it’s a shame that we can’t just stay in the general area um but I guess that the players will want to be in for for Christmas and uh it’s Rob’s birthday as well on Christmas day so uh Happy Birthday to Rob Edwards yeah that’s a that’s a tough pre and post isn’t it um or sorry Christmas day so two after but yeah it’s tough for the L fans I mean I get that that maybe wouldn’t have had loads traveling anyway considering our way form but I mean scheduling is utterly ridiculous Bristol City followed by Swansea tough it’s mad it’s actually mad back to back over the Christmas period where money’s tight fair play to every single person that goes out there fair play like my My ultimate respects uh to everyone going um but that’s us done and uh yeah as I said earlier we’re not going to be back until well pre QPR we’re going to take a little break mainly because of scheduling so to get match previews and match reactions and phone inss and whatnot for the for the Bristol City and Swansea games essentially we’d be doing it on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve and let’s face it no one’s going to listen no one’s going to Jo join us forone in happening on New Year’s Eve are they might be entertaining yeah no I won’t imagine so I’m sure people have got much better things to be doing with their time yeah
