Frank how are you doing today better than better not as good as you not as good as you but I I’m doing fine I’ll survive um I had an incident happened where my glass top broke on my desk so I have shards of glass everywhere like this that was that just like the glass top on top of the top of your desk yeah it was like a shelf it was like a shelf no otherwise everything would be I was gonna say I’d be looking at you from a very different angle here I’ll show you I’ll show you the corner of it come on oh wow yeah so it did go in a big way goodness oh yeah those were the small pieces and as you know I swept the floor for a whole bunch and now I got to be careful when I put my hands down but anyway we’ll try to survive this and I’m sure we will um it’s an important Time of the Season for the Toronto Maple Leafs their goal tender well I guess uh their goal tending is rounding in the shape but one thing that the Leafs have done really well and that is play without Matthews yeah it you know it it seems kind of strange but they’re doing better this season without him than they were doing with him it lends Credence to the theory that potentially uh his injury was worse than expected and trying to gut it out probably wasn’t the best of ideas um it also raises uh raises the question of well is is he entirely necessary or can we you know ship off this dead weight that’s currently holding the team back I say this wink wink as a Leafs fan because of course that’s a that’s a a hyperbolic question I mean they are six of seven since Matthews was sidelined and they did actually managed to get a shut out but man well you know Aaron history has taught us something about sports that is very true there’s a there’s a kernel of Truth in what you’re saying and that truth would be you don’t need you don’t need a star player to win the championship and by um by that I mean that if you needed a star player to win the championship over a 25-year period where you had Marcel Deion play for 20 some something years like 25 years he played he never won a Stanley Cup and he was in his era maybe top three would that be a fair statement it’s a very very fair assessment of Marcel Dion top three never won a cup MH so you see he isn’t the necessity stars are not the necessity to win the Cup teams win the Cup by virtue of Team teams win the cup um when they put names on the cup they put the whole team on the cup they don’t just put Austin ma if the leaps win they won’t just put Austin Matthews on there in big bold letters it’ll include everybody in the team it is literally the elephant in the room that beguiles every organization because quite frankly um the ones that realize you know the the the stars that realize they need a team to win those like Eiserman I’m naming him on purpose with in with intention where he felt it was okay for him not to be paid much more than his teammates and there have been other players that have done it as well where they felt that they understood that maybe they have to sacrifice in a way that a lot of people would not to impress the people he works with MH um you know if you have I if if the ugliness of selfishness appears it’s easy to identify obvious selfishness but the subtle self selfishness can have almost as much of a de devastating effect on on sports franchises so in in in the roundabout way I’m saying it’s true the Leafs don’t need Austin Matthews to win they don’t need Austin Matthews to win the Stanley Cup what they do need is a team to win the Stanley Cup so I truly believe that and and it’s at the root of why I say that sometimes in an era where the cap is what the cap is you have X amount of money to pay players and you got to try and figure out how good a team you can put together with the players that you have so with my tongue and cheek I say the leaf don’t need Matthews well you know the the cap rumors are are are abounding at this point here and everybody’s saying that you know there is the possibility could get up over 90 million for the next year um you know it’s one of those situations where depending on how well the league does you know that could be a boon to certain teams who are right up against it or have players that they need to sign for the next year you know so um this is not necessarily a bad thing if the if the cap does go up um but it also you know puts perspective on the fact that while it would be nice to have that cap money to pay your stars to make sure that they stay Stars aren’t always necessary like you look at a lunch bucket team and I hate that term but you look at a lunch bucket team like the Florida Panthers winning the cup you know that’s that’s one of those situations where they don’t have a lot of high paid players you know it’s it’s it’s all of the parts that come together in gel at the right point in time to make it happen yeah and and and we know that you know when Tampa won it and their best player was out and then he came back to the playoffs they were able to create a situation where they had a false cap right so and and that help them right and and and the thing is the thing is about the teams getting more money in the cap it’s only a temporary fix because what’s going to happen is teams are going to overpay players again it’ll just be the next batch like they might get relief like the leas will get relief let’s say let’s say that they get relief and they’re able to put Marner under their cap probably only going to barely fit under it because he’s going to ask for as much as he can get and there’s talk that that he may get 14 million which is dry siddle’s Community right where where dry Sidle is and and the question that that begs the asking is he as good as you know as dry cidal uh statistically I don’t think he is uh you know he he’s never been higher than dry Sidle in the points race and does he offer anything more than than you know basically getting points he’s a dazzler he he’s playing his best hockey Marner is playing his best hockey that I’ve seen him play his Mastery with the puck in the past couple of b games has been has been mindboggling and and how how great he is he’s made grown men and better in NHL look silly he’s been that good he’s made them look silly but we’re not sure you and I I don’t think you and I either of us could say at this point that kind of play will happen in the NHL playoffs because in the playoffs he’s going to get stapled right being pretty doesn’t work and you know it’s going to the the physical play the holding um the clutching the the the late hits all that stuff escalates gets more and more important which makes that kind of play that Marner is really good at less important I wish for the a difference for people like you or Le fans but the reality is the physicality in the in the playoffs diminishes players like specifically players like Minner now going just tapping back onto the the the salary cap limit for just a second here uh Elliot fredman was actually reporting that there is the potential for the cap to go not to 92 a half as first originally thought but to anywhere from 95 to 97 million next season yeah that is a jump of approximately 7 to9 million which would very handily help the maple leaf solve their current salary cap issues um but uh you know I I I while I do enjoy uh Elliot’s projections about this sort of thing I’m I’m loath to fully you know throw all of my apples into the card on that one so we’ll see where they end up well it is what it is until it is yeah and I mean you know the Lea have been doing a lot of banking uh recently with with with injured reserve uh you know doy was out comp pachetti yarn croak Matthews you got Ryan Reeves uh who’s who started his his fiveg game ban for beaning Daryl nurse uh Matthew n has also been placed on reserve currently uh so that’s another thing uh they brought up Fraser Minon as an emergency measure they they kind of had to sign uh uh Alex neander as sort of a stop Gap thing so now he’s expected to make his debut tomorrow night when the leaf uh play Utah so I’m interested to see how all of that will go what I find impressive I instead of keying we’ve keyed on the necessity of Matthews in the lineup we’ve hinted at the his absence obviously left the hole right I find it I find it very intriguing in the stretch of games that Matthews hasn’t been there especially showing this point I’d like to make is that it appears to me I really think there’s a good system in place with the Maple Leafs I think they’re getting some really good coaching where they’re creating a situation where they can plug and play and players are interchangeable and those players that they have right are able to fill in the gaps created by the absence of such a such a player as Austin Matthews right it’s a big hole to fill and and the way they played with their lineup That was basically that was a lineup good for the road in in training camp that lineup was was filled literally and I don’t think I’m exaggerating filled with players with very little NHL experience um let’s face it there were at least four guys in that lineup maybe five that if the team was healthy would not be in the lineup which bodess well for the way the teams being coached and remember the the the thing that hammered it home to me Aaron that lineup with a lot of those AHL players got a shut out I’m I’m GNA get I mean the goalie deserved a lot of the credit but you know goalies are not Invincible as we’ve learned no unfortunately they they can only stretch or bend so far before breaking so but we we seem to have been um and and I’m knocking on wood here uh we seem to have been all right so far wall has come back he’s been decent stolar has come has been a wonderful Revelation hild Tobe wellnut solid has been consistent um you know so in in that regard I think we’re we’re doing okay um it’s just the the number of players that we currently have on injured reserve is just absolutely ridiculous you know and it’s it’s one of those things where we’re hoping it it doesn’t get any worse I mean neander signed a cont contract for $775,000 that was a neander as opposed to W neander yeah uh so we we’ll see what number he gets um but uh had originally signed a a one-year AHL contract back in July um so yeah it’s it’s no wonder he’s finally being elevated um that was a double in Tandra by the way yes it was but the way things are going right now man um they’ve been having a limited amount of success I would not be surprised where the wheels to fall off in the next coming week or so before Matthews gets back as as the wheels do during a long season you’re going to go through that stretch you know you’re going to go through the stretch where your team just isn’t doing that well that happens with every team the key is and that’s the thing that I think separates the teams that are either well coached or good teams however you want to Define it that they work their way out of that rut right they find a way out of the rut and the really good teams find their way out of that rut sooner rather than later so you know that’s that’s the real test there’s going to be dips in the season for every team the question is how long does a pro pro uh uh you know a long time of failure how long it lasts yeah so you know it it it is it is going to be interesting let’s go over to the second period we’ll we’ll skip the first period for now um let’s let’s stick with hockey and and let’s talk about Matthews and he’s gone to Germany to I haven’t heard what his problem is but this is a problem where they’re looking for international doctor help I assume well he’s seen this doctor before he did actually see this doctor when he was playing the same guy when he was okay yeah he’s gone there before he’s been there before for third opinion TR living has basically described it as more of a a checkup than anything else to sort of ensure that he’s progressing as expected uh he was actually on the ice with the team this morning skating um he says that the the Sunday is unlikely uh but it’s more than likely that he’ll be back on Wednesday the good news about this injury happening when it has is is that the Lea uh at least since the 14th they they they’ve they have four games for the remainder of the month which means it’s a chance for players to rest up it’s a chance for you know those who are injured to work through get the rehab that they need travel to see a doctor for example um you know but at at the end of the day uh you know he says he he says you know I I thought it was time to take a step back and re-evaluate just take it day by day uh the issue hasn’t necessarily gotten worse but it wasn’t really getting better so I wanted to be uh proactive collaborating with the leaf they were super supportive he spent about five days overseas to receive a second opinion from a doctor he trusted and have previously consulted with he said Saturday he felt a lot better um you know it’s it’s I don’t think it’s something that’s extraordinary or out of the ordinary certainly if if you don’t get a medical opinion you want you’re GNA go try to find the you know shop around until you actually get the one that you want but in this particular case here I think he’s legitimately making progress uh in other words uh to the subject of that Aaron was uh wrestling with there the the the simple uh fact is is that this is a stretch of games in days that is that is much short much longer with less games in it so this is this is an advantageous moment for the Leafs to have to be short of players if you will giving the the the the many players that are working really hard right and and and basically not getting not uh being able to actually rest Wilder Wilder during the season and still in the lineup because they have a lot of days between games they have a lot of opportunity here to get healthy and the players that are unhealthy have an extra amount of time where they’ll Miss less games technically the more time less games it’s really important all right moving on to the next thing NIS is another guy who’s being evaluated Aaron um there there was talk about about that about that hit as to whether it was a clean hit or not um I don’t know uh what I will say is this um he he hit his head when he hit the ice but I think some of the damage was done with the shoulder pad in the head that the shoulder pad to the head they talk about going through his body but it was a shoulder pad that hit hit his head first almost like with um with the Mr uh our tough guy our local tough guy here in Toronto getting the suspension he did the same thing hit the guy with his shoulder and then he raised his arm and that was uh they felt it was like you know the chicken wing hit right that he was put using his shoulder it to me that was the only difference in the two hits yeah I mean the really the the the one major difference is that NIS didn’t end up looking at his own butt after he got hit by the player what White Cloud did is technically a almost perfect and and I know Leaf fans are going to hate me for saying this but an all almost perfect open eyes hit NIS was skating quickly towards him White Cloud closed the Gap he when he hit him he rose through the hit which is what you’re supposed to do everybody’s pointing to that one video frame where you can see both of white clouds feet off the ice going see he jumped into it this is what’s called momentum it’s physics when you hit someone and you stand up through the hit to unweight them and remove them from the puck this is the sort of thing that that happens uh I I can confirm that it was good um I can confirm that uh I have been on the receiving end of many such hits and they’re legal it explains a lot about me but that’s a different story uh but you know um at the end of the day good good hit ruled by the NHL to be clean uh no supplementary discipline from from uh from from NHL player safety uh especially after the uh uh especially after the fact that he was injured and I know that when they do these videos a lot they talk about how you know the result helps determine the suspension this case not in this case not in this case no because it’s a leaf you know well is what it is okay so there is some favoritism there or disfavor that you’re poting it isn’t completely it’s not personal to the player that caused the damage but more League that turns uh if you will uh uh looking the other way in this case no uh for me it’s uh I’m not going to say that uh I’m of the opinion that I’m always unhappy when a player gets injured I’m always unhappy doesn’t matter which player it just U it makes me unhappy to see players get hurt um you know and and the head is such a vulnerable part of our body I know us men we think other parts are more vulnerable but that one is really in in reality the most vulnerable part of your body and uh it’s scary when um you know it’s scary when when a player goes down and doesn’t get back up um and when they hit the ice and and they’re just Free Falling that’s the scariest part is that you know that they’re out because they’re not doing anything with their arms or anything to break the fall and that’s the for me that’s the scariest part and his head did bounce off the ice we saw that as well so that couldn’t have helped we hope he gets better um was it a legal hit I’m not sure would I say it wasn’t I’m not sure again only the outcome is what bothers me is that that you know he ended up with a with probably a concussion let’s go over to Major League Baseball and uh so you’re gonna get your wish yeah well we we we’ll see how long it takes before we’ll see how long it takes before people are really complaining about it but Major League Baseball is going to be testing a robo um challenge system at spring training which could be implemented League wide The Following Season uh Rob Manfred told the Athletics Evans iic on Wednesday that the league will test an automated ball strike challenge system in spring training in 2025 with a hope that the system can be implemented in the regular season in 2026 basically the system is supposed to give teams two challenges per game but teams retaining them when they’re correct now not every spring training ballpark will reportedly have the uh ABS camera uh but all teams will have the opportunity to play with the new system um they’re going to have a spring training ABS test that will provide a meaningful opportunity for all major league players to see what the challenge system will look like uh Manfred says that from his perspective there’s two sides to that test it’s what clubs think about and also what do the players think about it and they’re going to have to sort through both of those now they have been experimenting with the ABS system in two different formats in the minor leagues going all the way back to 2019 um some games have seen Robo Ms used to call every pitch While others has used the challenge system uh about to hit Spring training the challenge system was actually used full-time in Triple A so it’ll be interesting to see how that affects it uh my issue with going full Robo um fans already don’t like umpires to be honest nobody likes anybody that that that that has the job that they do it’s it’s pretty much Universal um how badly this shows up the umpires uh when it’s finally implemented could be one of the determining factors so what we’re talking about here the bottom line is eliminating human error right and you just said right now that we’re going to find out how error filled umpires are but I have a question is there such a thing as technical error there is and that’s another issue that we have to look at here unless they’re programming every single batter into to this system individually um I can see where like not every pitch that is technically a strike looks like a strike or is same with balls right yeah so the question is where is it measuring where the ball is passing over the plate is it at the front of the plate the middle of the plate the back of the plate uh is it is it going to look at where the back where the catcher frames it up um is it going to take into account the fact that uh some batters L to accordion when they’re at the plate to to change and change their their the size of their Strike Zone um you know uh it it’s it’s a very technically difficult thing to implement and I know people love to say oh robots will solve it it shouldn’t be a problem get rid of the umpires they’re all bums anyways you have to factor all this stuff in well if if robots and Technology was that good um there would be a lot of things we wouldn’t complain about I don’t want to get into politics but um there is there the problem with the robots is going to be and this is this is something that unfortunately fans are very very prone to conspiracies wow that’s not gonna disappear because it’s a robot’s let’s just take this into account last year uh MLB teams only had a 47% success rate with challenges that’s good so under half of the time they they they were correct and they in in what was being called so factor in how many times that happens how many times you think that a pitch is correct during the game or that a call is correct dur in the game that that that pitch tracker that fox throws up with a little grid it doesn’t always tell the whole story I know and and especially because a lot of times a lot of balls that look like strikes are called balls and a lot of balls that are called balls are strikes actually strikes yeah they look they look and that’s the other thing uh you know you’ve highlighted a couple of points that you know can technology handle this situation we don’t know which is why the league and its infinite wisdom through previous lessons league sports leagues now for decades have realized that the only way to know if a system works is to try it and they don’t want to try it in the big league so every League whether it’s hockey basketball football baseball they try it at a lower level where the intensity of the uh adjustment is not as severe as it would be in the majors and and away from uh major you know major media um you know questions right so yeah so it’s good what they’re doing I mean what what are they trying to do Aon what’s the point I think the point is they’re trying to make the game better more accurate and make sure that the players decide the game not a bad call exactly and you know that that that’s basically what they’re trying to do here is to streamline the calling system make sure that they get that as correct as they possibly can um and try to remove as much human error from it as possible like you mentioned we got some drama going on in F1 Aaron what’s happening there so there’s three races remaining in the Formula 1 season uh Max verstappen is as close to a fourth consecutive World Championship as he possibly can be if he wins on on Saturday morning at 1:00 a.m. uh in Las Vegas technically it could be all over he could have won that um but not everything is going as smoothly as you’d like uh there’s a new race director following the firing of Nels vidic uh that kind of blinded the Grand Prix Drivers Association um they created an Instagram account to rebuke the lack of FIA transparency uh George Russell uh one of the directors of the gpda said you know it was a bit of surprise I think for everybody it’s a lot of pressure now onto the new race director with just three races left often as drivers we probably feel like they’re would the last to find out that sort of information um also Greg MAF the CEO of Liberty Media the company that holds the commercial rights to F1 said he was stepping down from his position uh this followed months of speculation that owner John Malone was displeased with Liberty Landing in two different justice department investigations specifically one surrounding f1’s refusal to andred Global into the series and the other over allegations of a Live Nation concert ticket Monopoly uh the andred team is expected to receive F1 approval to join the grid albeit without Michael andred who scal back his role dramatically since the Indie Car season ended in September um F1 has also denied over the weekend that Stefano domenicali CEO of Formula 1 management was also on the Move amid rumors that the Italian would take over Moto GP if Liberty’s purchase of the series was approved and renie V A longtime Liberty Media employee CEO of the Las Vegas Grand Prix and potentially dominical successor told the AP she would fulfill any role Malone tasks her with but has lit desire to move from Colorado to London to replace Dominic Al uh maf’s newly open job who knows at this point um do they do do the Europeans actually want a North American to run the that’s the other thing to consider as well uh many drivers particularly seven time Champion leis Hamilton have been at odds with FIA president Muhammad Ben Salam since his election following the 2021 season finale uh the gdpa statement uh in a gdpa statement sorry uh they reminded the sanctioning bodies that members are adults who don’t need lectures and fines on foul language or jewelry bands and clothing restrictions and simply want fair and consistent race control so there’s all of this stuff that’s going on with it um Las Vegas had a lot of issues W with their debut last year um looking at some of the qualifying and some of the practices that have been going on in Vegas so far this year it doesn’t seem like they’ve gotten to handle on all of the problems but at least they don’t have uh at least they don’t have hydr covers wrecking Ferraris so that is one thing to look forward to um also uh Russell is starting at the front uh we’re we’re gonna have uh Pierre gazley of Alpine racing uh in uh position three for stopen is starting from five and Hamilton is starting from 10 so uh the order on the grid has certainly set everything up to be very very interesting I’m I’m going to be staying up late tonight to watch that race hope you enjoy it oh I will try lion a coming back the Canadians tra traded for a very important player one that was comparable to Austin Matthews and now they have him now he joins their lineup and we know that his injury happened in an exhibition game against the mate beliefs that Drew a lot of ir yes um you know there were uh they actually had to deactivate that particular player’s most social media accounts because he was actually getting death threats from Montreal fans so they take that sort of thing very seriously uh but the Habs might actually be getting him back soon um he wore a non-con jersey uh played uh with his teammates on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a left knee sprain but left the ice after about 15 minutes that’s one5 so he’s easing himself back into it um Cedric Pere unfortunately not playing in the NHL at this point uh excuse me uh the Canadians had announced on October 1st that lining would be sidelined for two to three months uh he started skating on his own on November 6 before joining the team at practice um line is gonna probably need a lot of time to get back into game Rhythm uh maybe two weeks maybe three weeks but uh in the meantime hopefully fans will have an opportunity to see him play with the Laval rocket in the AHL um that would be a that would be a nice treat absolutely well we spoke earlier about the difference between great good and not so good teams is their ability to bounce back from a bad stretch the the Ottawa Senators have lost their fourth in a row that would be an inability to bounce back um they have another chance losing five in a row uh would be too much they lost to the golden knights recently yeah they were defeated 3-2 um that was their fourth loss at home and their four fourth consecutive loss overall uh they made some big mistakes which are tough to survive uh especially when you haven’t been getting a lot of scoring support um eel opened the scoring for Vegas just six minutes into the game uh eel hit barbashev with a cross ice pass lenus olar ex of the Boston Bruins slid to make the save and fell barbashev got the rebound and passed it back to eel who did put it basically into the empty net um you know dorv got the gamewinner and barbashev assisted on two other goals Adam Cadet and Drake bson both scored for Ottawa who actually outshot the knights 40-32 umark as you remember one of the really part half of a really good tandem in Boston for the past couple years swayan has been not very good out of the gate uh and neither coincidentally has omark um you know they each other it’s possible other emotional strength that they drew on I think I know it sounds corny but you know what uh they they had a bro thing going on I mean it was VE it was very obvious they displayed it at the end of every game they won um yeah that you know um the Senators are a team that you and I both think are on the are and have been on the cusp for a very very long time but the one thing that has destroyed their seasons are prolonged losing streaks and they’re in the midst of one that is getting worse and it can’t they’ve got to recover they were in good shape before that that those four losses Aaron they were in a playoff spot they were ahead of the Leafs they were ahead of the Bruins they were they were making a move you know because they played so few games and had enough points to challenge you know those teams the Leafs the Bruins and and now they find themselves struggling for a victory hopefully they’ll work things out I I I have this off spot for him just because they you know they’re a team that has looked like they should they could but why can’t they yeah you know and and it and it’s it’s surprising how quickly they dropped out of contention um that just that little bit of a swoon there has dropped them all the way down to 27th Place overall in the NHL absolutely it’s a game of inches you know it the the emotional strength great line that you need as a franchise um that you need is not easy to establish you know this that that strength you know uh when you look at at teams like Toronto who who have looked like okay that was the year this was it they didn’t do it this year they’re done and and you know people get very um you know positive that the Leafs are going to going to fail the following year it is because that would be a natural thing to happen success doesn’t hang around for for long it hangs around for teams that are very um they’re notorious for being winners right but because the Leafs haven’t won you know the first round as much as some has have hoped and the Senators haven’t made the playoffs th this is one of the things that the Senators are trying to do they’re trying to get to where the Leafs are and that is make the playoffs and it’s not easy it just isn’t easy it’s so hard to make the playoffs and the points they don’t earn now are not going to be good for them as move as they move forward because we talk about this every time and everyone’s aware of this when you’re down in the standings it’s not the fact that you got to catch up to one team but when you got to pass five or six of which any could get hot and stay ahead of you this is one you pay for these losses they’re going to pay for going going forward now we have the Edmonton Oilers as an example last year so there’s no guarantee that being this low at this time of year that you’re out of it Edmonton proved last year they could get back in it around this time Edmonton had made up for all the Lost ground they created by all those losses early but eventually the you know before Christmas uh the points you get before Christmas are going to help you in April and April is a very important month and and April is all about the points you gathered before April so good luck to them a team that I’m uh I’m pleasantly surprised with as you know I we support all the Canadian teams and and and Calgary’s in Canada so I support Calgary as well weager was a standout for Calgary and and they beat the Rangers who lately don’t look like the monster that everybody thought they might be yeah it’s surprising you know the Rangers are are are actually in a wild card spot with 25 points um Calgary are currently first in their division believe it or not at 12 six and three um so that’s nice to see uh but mcken weager has been one of those guys who when I first heard of him and watched him play I kind of pooed his style and I I I would like to wholeheartedly apologize to Mr McKenzie weager sir I was unaware of your name um you he’s been absolutely Dynamite for for for Calgary it’s been fantastic to see um you know uh it’s he was anywhere and everywhere that he needed to be to make sure that he got the stops that he needed to make the pass that he needed um it just absolutely wonderful to see well you know what in his name it’s a g not a k weaker he’s weaker bu’s three-point effort leads the wild past the Oilers who are trying to they’re in the playoffs they’re they’re on the they’re on the knife’s edge in that regard yeah you know and I mean it’s we’re now a quarter of the way through the season um so I think it’s safe to say that we’re not looking at a small sample size anymore um Edmonton are firmly in a wild card spot right behind uh Colorado Avalanche um who are only listed as ahead of them because they have one more game played even though they share the same number of points um but yeah Freddy gdo had two goals and an assist as the Wilds have continued to pick up points um they managed to get themselves a 5-3 victory uh Minnesota are currently sitting second in the Central Division um at 133 and four with 30 points Edmonton is currently sitting uh at 109 and two with 22 points uh this is uh one of those games that could have gone really either way realistically speaking um caiso’s first period assist extended his point streak to seven games he has six goals and seven assists he’s currently onpac to reach 150 points this season wow after becoming the Wild’s first player to reach triple digit in points with 108 in 2021 and 2022 uh on the flip side with injuries to Victor arvidson and Zack Heyman forward Casper kaan yes he of the M police made his debut on Edmonton’s second line just a couple of days after be claimed off waivers from the blues um you know it’s uh he played decently uh wasn’t wasn’t a standout didn’t light the lamp or anything like that but at least at least we weren’t talking about him in a negative way well um you know there there are players who have talent and just sometimes don’t have the what’s between the ears to match that talent and and he has he has issues the mental part of the game is uh and when I say mental there’s nothing wrong with him mentally that’s not don’t take it that way folks I I’m talking about his hockey sense you know and his hockey drive those two things were called the question into Toronto and then he was traded and now it appears that you know he hasn’t put it together enough to to have teams want to keep them Edmonton is in a tough place they have injuries to you know take care of and you know caspy Ka and speed has always been something that has caused teams to salivate and think that he can do something and know he’s a pretty good Puck Handler too you know around the net so you know this guy should be able to put it together but we’ll see I mean you know it’s a tough game hockey is is not just physical it’s mental as well and and and there’s a there’s a there’s a tough we talked about the Senators we could talk about the Sabers we could talk about all these teams that don’t have the makeup to win when they shouldn’t and win when they should because if you can’t win when you shouldn’t and you can’t win when you should then you’re not going to be a really good team you’re going to struggle if you only can do one of those two things so 100% it’s it’s it’s an interesting situation and and but fun nonetheless he gets another chance he should be grateful for that and as far as the wild is concerned this is a team that was has has has picked up on on uh in free agency some really good players and they’ve never gotten the kind of result that shows that their players that they picked up or any players in the roster since cap capriel the thrill came that they never had a player that reached top 10 scoring and and now they have one and and is starting to play a little bit better as well because he’s getting less attention that he would normally get if there wasn’t another guy like him so good for the wild the fans got to be ecstatic they’re looking good they’re looking like a team uh that the fans can really Embrace and uh good luck to them um the Canucks a team another Canadian team that boggles me you know not like Ottawa but like just they’re unique in the sense that this is a team I guess you could say they’re more like the Oilers they they’ve been very successful but they haven’t been able to do it you know consistently they they’ve lack the ability to be really good most of the time or all the time they’ve they’ve had they’ve hit the skids too many times and it begs the question they they’ve changed coaches they got a coach who really strict now Aaron what’s going on with them they you know honestly not I’m I’m I’m a little shocked as to why they haven’t been more consistent um over the course of the past few years um they’ve certainly had the players in place on the roster they’ve got a great young Captain um you know they have elas Peterson has been consistent for them um but they’ve basically called up Max sassin uh and sent Jonathan leaki down to the AHL um leaki scored his first career NHL goal while averaging 14 minutes and 48 seconds a game spent a lot of time in 2022 uh sorry the 2022 first round pick spent his time playing with JT Miller and Pia Suter but the fact that Miller’s now gone uh for an extended leave of absence is probably something that ended up with with with him getting set down um in 16 games however assassin has four goals and is tied for the lead for the abbottsford Canucks the one thing I noticed that the Canucks haven’t really been all that successful with is scoring um so you know uh they’ve only got through 18 games they only have 57 goals for but they have 59 goals against so they’re looking to increase that uh they are curring currently sitting in a negative differential of minus two um you look at teams that are currently successful in the NHL and they’re plus 11 plus 28 plus 18 plus 19 so you can see you know the the driving force behind them bringing sassin back up again um hopefully this is a move that works out for them uh at least in the short term if not necessarily for long term as well yeah good for them you know it is what it is right um then we’ve got the story of oetkin uh who at the beginning of last year the talk about Gretzky’s record started to you know started to be more and more into the front page and he did a pretty good he did pretty well and they you know two more years you catch Gretzky and then this year happened and all of a sudden it was you know he might do it this year and then something else happened he was injured he’s got a broken tibula yeah ites it does doesn’t appear that the hockey gods are anxious to have him beat Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 NHL goals you know just quite yet um unfortunately he had a legon leg collision with Jack mcpain um and uh yeah the the the outcome was a fractured fibula so he’s out four to six weeks now the he’s 39 he’s getting up there he’s actually only missed 35 games due to injury and other absences uh uh some were due to suspensions uh others were being in covid-19 protocols but only 35 games Miss due to inury is huge it sucks that he’s out but you know at the rate that he was scoring I I wouldn’t be surprised if he caught uh if he caught Wayne Gretzky’s record well before the end of the season well good luck to him I mean he’s a he’s a great player who’s who’s you know they call him great eight I mean he is he is he is one of the greatest scorers in in NHL history he’ll he’ll be in the hall just a question of after he retires he’ll probably want a first ballot in the in the hall for sure he’s he’s a really good player and uh we got a couple of minutes left I want to go back to the Maple Leafs and I wanted to talk about the goal tending very quickly Aaron sure the Leafs have to be happy with the goal ending and there are some people I I I wondering you know what we got us a big asset here with the maple EES maybe we got something we can trade for some good stuff what do you think of that talk you know um I had actually heard people throwing around cod’s name coming back to T there it is H potentially for eastn Cowen um to which I would say no absolutely no absolutely not uh now Nick Robertson maybe Nick he’s been on the outs lately uh I mean he he’s been performing he just has hasn’t been performing as well as as as the Lea would like to see him perform um so you know C’s contract into the cap for the leaes see that’s that’s where it gets really tough right he’s got to look at what he’s pulling down and that is that is a that is a tough ask to try to fit him in yeah would Calgary be willing to keep money and if they are then that’s when the asset that get they get in return improves if they’re keeping if they’re keeping salary yeah I I can’t see them doing that unfortunately that’s I don’t know man I just I’m I’m I’m not sure if they would be able to if they would be able to retain let’s just take a look here though I’m curious now so he’s kadri’s only making seven million only only making seven million this season all the way through until 2027 2028 huo’s making 10.5 yeah that’s a seven million the leasts need to take care of Marner yeah that’s uh that that’s part of it I mean currently uh currently actually the Calgary Flames could probably retain they have $24.6 Million worth of cap space um they’re projected to have 18.7 by the time the trade deadline rolls around um so yeah I mean their their annual cap hit is only $69 69 million and and and with a cap uh with a cap of $88 million there’s there’s a lot of room that they got the other thing is is that with the ability and cap the ability because of cap space to have players when the season you know heads into the you know the trade deadline you know a lot of teams will make trades and if you have cap room you can really do some decent shopping and just shop by paying the salary you don’t have to worry about to get a guy you have to divest yourself of some salary at the same time and that ends up costing you Le fans have learned that with you know the dubis era which was you know to get rid of guys they ended up giving away first round draft picks C’s in the position where if they can be as close to first as they are now and they can get into the western division playoffs they can bring in players and $18 million is a fair bit of good talent that they could they could make a difference so yeah I mean as it stands they’re only 4.25 million off the salary cap floor exactly you know this is this is a team that has the the room should the performance continue they have the room right now to be massive buyers come the trade deadline if they want to make a a push for the playoffs see that’s the that’s the thing about today’s NHL when um nowadays you know back in the day it would have been getting rid of players yeah excuse me it would be getting rid of players now now it’s all about divesting your of salary against the cap and and and if you can do that that’s how you rebuild because it there is there is not I’m G to say this and I hope I’m not wrong but I’m gonna run it by you it’s harder to find salaries that’ll fit into your lineup than good players yes right and and here’s the thing the goodness or Badness of the player doesn’t necessarily match their salary right so so the bin is full of players that have that have you know potential the Leafs have a goal tender in in stolar that he wasn’t in the clearance bin but he might as well have been when you consider how they got him yeah I you know I I I’m I’m just gonna consider that a yoink part of the Maple Leafs and we’ll just leave it at that just saying they got lucky is that yeah they they really honestly did I’m not sure why going for that but if they got lucky Florida got stupid I’m just saying you can’t have both right if one’s if one’s lucky someone was unlucky and and and you know what I love the way he plays goal I love the effect he has on wall because wall doesn’t have this sounds stupid but wall doesn’t have to have the pressure on him this year to have to be the guy he has to play really well because all he has to worry about now is his play how he plays he can concentrate on his job and not worry about how his job affects the team as a whole and that’s the neat thing about having a decent backup and that’s the allmark effect in Boston in my opinion now see here’s what I find really interesting um they locked down wool to a three-year 10.98 million contract and then agreed to a twoyear 5 million dollar deal with Anthony stolar so technically speaking I think wall is getting paid more money than stolar is but stolar is the number one so having a guy like stolar here who can eat up a lot of games is good in the long run for wall because it allows him to have the the opportunity to continue to develop and to make sure that he doesn’t injure himself again and the key for stars is the same key that Campbell ended up benefiting from and that is playing well in goal on a team that plays well enough to help you play well in goal helps you in your next contract since goendale that’s not a life that’s not a you know that’s not a career so you know we’ve got a situation here where stolar if he plays well and the Leaves play well defensively he’s going to help them with it with his next contract and we know in the National Hockey League that goenda Carousel yeah you know they’re just On a Carousel and what the leaf can do is take advantage of the fact that stolar is here now help wall to develop longer term success and the ability to the ability and the belief that they can do it that he can do it and that’s the beauty of having a guy like stars and that’s what Boston’s missing in allmark well you know at the end of the day it all comes down to who makes it where and when and right now the leavs I think are are well situated to at least make the playoff if not make a decent push you’re 100% R right Aaron thanks for doing this buddy hey glad to be here Frank Aaron William Freeland I’m
