📝 Video Description:
The Washington Capitals faced a tough 3-2 loss against the New Jersey Devils, marking their first back-to-back defeats of the season, exacerbated by the absence of captain Alex Ovechkin due to a broken fibula. With Ovechkin sidelined for 4-6 weeks, the team is experimenting with line adjustments, such as moving Taylor Raddysh into the top six and Tom Wilson to the first line, while keeping the third line stable. Despite a bright spot with Matt Roy’s first goal as a Capital and Connor McMichael’s strong performance, the team struggled with offensive momentum and special teams, allowing two power-play goals. Their recent scoring challenges have resulted in only three goals in the last two games, prompting the need for tactical adjustments as they prepare for upcoming matches, including a road trip to Florida. Meanwhile, Ethen Frank excelled in the Hershey Bears game, contributing significantly to their success and ranking sixth in the league with 18 points.

on today’s show the capitals are now all in two in Alex egin’s absence what needs to change before this whole thing spins out of control I’ll discuss next on this edition of lockdown capitals your locked on capitals your daily podcast on the Washington Capitals part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day well hello and welcome into this edition of locked on capitals part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day my name is Dan homy I’ve covered the capitals for the last three seasons for lock on and various other outlets before that I’m also the host of the weekly show called the capitals minute cast available wherever you find your podcasts today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel you can start the season with a big return on FanDuel new customers can place a $5 bet and you’ll get started with $150 in bonus bets if you win your first $5 bet visit fuel.com to get started so in this edition of locked on capitals we talk about the struggling Washington Capitals yes can you believe it it didn’t seem like like it was that long ago that I was talking about how this team was Unstoppable uh but I think it still holds true as Alex oetkin goes so go the capitals as they are now 0 and two in his absence what needs to change I’ll talk about that a little bit later I’ll talk about how the capitals fell to the New Jersey Devils what went wrong in that game and what can we learn about this team going forward a little bit later I’ll talk about changes uh at Sunday practice and what that will manifest as as the capitals take on the Panthers next and then in the final segment if the capitals want to Tinker uh and try to inject some potential goal scoring uh I think that Ethan Frank of the Hershey Bears would be a good option but just to get it going here it was a rough game against the New Jersey Devils uh it does seem as of late that that team often times gives the capitals fits uh it was no exception the other night uh as Sheldon Keefe has that team firing on all cylinders a lot of young talent I think that one of the Achilles heals of that team for so many years was the net mining it seems like they have that taken care of as well and they gave the capitals more than they could handle and uh to be fair and to give the capitals a little bit of slack they’re still trying to figure out this whole team uh minus Alex oetkin it seems kind of odd that one player can have such a big impact but when you’re the captain of the team and have put up 15 goals it’s not as easy as just plugging and playing but that’s what we’re going to talk about here in the first segment talking about the Fallout from the capitals latest matchup against the Devils where the absence of our captain Alex oetkin was really felt and um you know the thing I like about Spencer carbury is that he’s not willing to just to keep doing the thing same thing over and over and over again uh as we saw things shook up at Sunday’s practice I’ll talk about that a little bit later but uh a rough game and I think that it was kind of a work in progress I’m talking about the lines I’m talking about the Deep pairings how does everything have to shift and change uh when you’re minus the great eight in case you missed the game though the capitals dropped a tough one uh losing three to2 to the Devils the was a bitter defeat as it marked the first time this season that the Caps seen the team f backto back losses um kind of just exemplifies what I’m talking about is this team before all of this took place uh was truly Unstoppable I said there was no team in the NHL that I was afraid of the capitals facing well a little bit’s changed I think that ultimately they will write the ship but it might be a little bumpy here for a while as like I say they have dropped two in a row minus Alex oetkin um you know it’s a bit worrisome a little bit I don’t want to go full on in panic mode here but um I definitely think that things need to get shorted up uh with Obie expected to be out uh four to six weeks the challenge for offensive production is more critical than ever uh as you saw Ivan mirish nenko uh inserted back into the lineup and hoping to jump start the offense um Hendrick La here back out there um that you know it could be a little bit mix and match until they find the match if you take a look back to the first game of the season uh when the capitals fell to the Devils there was a lot of changes after that and you know it was changes that I don’t think anyone saw coming but once they made those changes this capitals team was quite stunning but in the game uh the goal production that was there was from Matt Roy uh he found the back of the net for his first goal as a capital to kick things off for the team and I thought here we go we’re going in the right direction Matt Roy scoring a goal uh NE not necessarily known as a goal score but uh it was a great goal scored from nearly uh the Blue Line there but unfortunately uh it’s there was a struggle after that the team struggled to maintain uh that offensive momentum after the early goal because what happened is the New Jersey Devils they overcame they adjusted uh they didn’t uh keep making the same mistakes and they spread the players out a lot of seam passes and a lot of you know like I’m saying spreading the capitals Defenders out that makes it that much more difficult uh to shake things up like I mentioned Ivan Mir nenko was moved up to the top line but his impact was all things considered minimal I’d hoped for more and he didn’t get as much ice time as we might have hoped um it’s not always a seamless transition sometimes you know what the numbers you put up in the American League for in this case the Hershey Bears doesn’t always Translate to the big team but all four lines seem to be finding fighting to find uh their Rhythm at even strength and you know like I said before the ovan thing all the lines seemed pretty well like you know the third line was the question mark before that uh they took care of that by bringing Lars Eller back and all seemed right in the world of the capitals but that was not the G the case against the Devils but in key moments in the third period the capitals tried to turn the Tie by ramping up shots on goal and generating scoring chances it was a valiant effort um but it fell short uh Charlie lingren and net I think did what he had to do uh there was a moment in the game that Allen uh the New Jersey Devils net minder almost shot it into his own net that would have been a highlight reel that would probably not be something he wants to remember but uh it was a game that had a little bit of everything but a key moment came during the the power play when Conor McMichael who we know has been huge uh for the team this year found the back of the net thanks to a slick a backdoor pass from John Carlson and this this is a great opportunity for a player like Conor McMichael to truly take his game to even yet another level I know he’s taken it to the next level but to even take it to a higher level um that they need goal scoring and Conor McMichael is a guy that’s putting up good numbers uh that was McMichaels 13th goal this season tying him for fourth in the NHL a silver lining in a tough game and um a funny moment there where he was chirping back and forth with a guy from the New Jersey Devils Conor McMichael is not necessarily a guy that I think of as a tough guy you know I think of him as kind of a younger guy in the league but I don’t think that uh being a tough guy or physicality is something that’s in his skill set per se but may maybe he might surprises uh maybe at some point he’ll drop the mits and go wow I didn’t know he had all that but despite the late surge the capitals just couldn’t break through Jake Allen’s solid performance in net uh that’s what I was talking about that uh you know I’m going to say even last season that that was one of their Achilles heels Achilles heel was the net minding and they have since solidified that as they have a really great number one and two in Nets but specialty teams performance uh the PK has been going pretty well for the capitals all season long and the pp has seen some progress but special teams also struggled in this game which was a bit uncharacteristic for the Caps Nick Dow took a couple of penalties and the Caps missed some key players in those situations and um I think it’s just a bit um disjointed uh we saw du ha drop in the mids in that game as well I think that it was um a valiant effort I understand why D Heim did it he was trying to rally the troops as often as the case uh there are different you know situations and scenarios for dropping the Ms and I think that was to try to rally the troops to say hey guys wake up uh but it wasn’t enough uh coming into the game our PK was ranked fourth in the league but the Caps allowed two Power Play Goals on just five attempts and uh Spencer Carberry was irritated is he is a guy that cannot hide his feelings very well at all nor should he uh that there was a lot of frustration and ultimately why I think things got shook up so much uh at practice uh this definitely requires some attention as we move forward uh as the capitals prepared to take on the Panthers who are really good this season and they take on the lightning which aren’t quite as good uh and then the lightning later in the week follow followed by the New Jersey Devils so it’s not going to get a lot easier the Panthers will definitely test the capitals resolve and ultimately have they shored up all the things that need to be addressed but overall the Devils controlled much of the game particularly after Thomas Tatar uh tied it up at one to one uh in the first period uh so any momentum off that Roy goal was vacuumed out in a hurry but from there on out they really dictated the pace uh I’ll facing the caps in key metrics like shots and overall play control and ultimately take a look at the standings and see where the devils are yeah that’s why they are where they’re at as this is a team uh that’s on the rise and to no surprise I actually uh projected the Devils to do truly great things this season but the future outlook it’s a frustrating outcome for the Caps who now have to figure out how to adapt minus oetkin have to there’s no other option uh I know that said that he would like to be playing now that he could do it on one leg um all those kind of things but hey it’s four to six weeks to figure it out a lot can change either for the good or for the bad let’s hope they figure it out uh but it’s clear that the capitals need some tactical adjustments to cope with the challenges they’re facing and they will be having that uh as there was a lot of big changes at Sunday’s practice what were some of those changes I’ll talk about straight ahead get ready to tackle the NFL action with FanDuel America’s number one sports book because right now new welcome back into this edition of locked on capitals part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day my name is Dan Hol you can find me over on Twitter it’s Dan caps 28 you can find the show on Twitter it’s at lockon caps and I want to thank all of you for making this your first listen of the day so in this next segment here we’re going to talk about changes made at Sunday’s practice yes Spencer Carberry is not the kind of Coach that’s going to say yeah that didn’t work maybe that’ll work in the next game no he took the lines and the Deep pairings and put them in a blender and I think it’s going to look a whole lot different Monday evening uh I think you can count on it and what are some of the changes uh that we saw take place uh like I said with Alex oetkin sideline due to a broken left fibula Spencer carbury is taking strategic steps to boost the team’s offense you have to it did not work uh I’m you know what is the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result well Spencer carbury is definitely not insane so line adjustments uh as I think was one of the biggest things that I think needs to be changed uh during practice on Sunday there were some notable uh line adjustments Taylor radish uh has been moved into the top six joining Conor McMichael and Pier Luke DUIs on the second line so I think that uh that is a good mix I think that Taylor radish is a guy that has been playing well and I definitely think it gives that line uh a bit of a different flavor a bit of a different chemistry let’s see if that chemistry takes off in the next game against the Panthers Tom Wilson has been placed on the first line uh which is not too surprising some people thought he would be on that Top Line to start the season we’ve seen that in years past uh teaming up with Dylan stro uh these new combinations could significantly impact the game dynamics of course that’s what we’re looking for uh is a change as it was rough and I think you know there are certain you know measuring sticks certain markers throughout the season and we’re coming up on one of them and that’s the Thanksgiving break where is your team at at the Thanksgiving break last season I want to say they were in second place second or third place and uh subsequently they made it to the playoffs and there are is some pretty strong data that supports that that where your team is at uh at the Thanksgiving break will you know dick if you’re going to be in the playoffs in some former fashion not saying winning the Stanley Cup but at least uh making it to the playoffs in general but looking ahead to the matchup against Florida uh the third line comprised of hendrik SLO here Lars Eller and Andrew mapan will remain unchanged uh providing some much needed stability and all things considered I like that I’m still not in love with Hendrick LA’s game just going to be honest H with you this is not a the hendrik laier uh that we remember from last season this is not the guy that was huge uh in The Calder Cup for the Hershey Bears like Allan May said he’s just not moving his legs as well as he should and if you’re going to be a good forward you need to move well and it’s it’s that amongst many other things that I think at some point hendrik Lop here probably will not be on the big team or you know I could see another guy cycling in for him here uh at some point uh Nick Dow is stepping up uh stepping in at Center flanked by Jacob Verana and Ivon mirish nenko Brandon duim took a maintenance day uh but is expected to rejoin the lineup on Monday so a lot is up in the air just because what we saw at practice uh doesn’t necessarily mean that that’s what we’re going to see on the ice Monday very well could uh but don’t set it in uh Stone so keep an eye on potential Chang es regarding Verana status as there has been some discontentment I guess I’m going to say from Spencer Curry on his play uh that uh they want to see more and one of the things that Spencer car carbury mentioned is the kind of the hot and cold nature of Jacob ver that this is at the point like I said a pivotal point of the Season where we need all hands on deck scoring challenges the capitals uh recently encountered scor boring issues of course we know against the Devils although they led the league in goals per game earlier this season uh they’ve really started to struggle lately managing only three goals uh in their last two games an about phas for this team uh as they were an offensive Firepower a force to be reckoned with that has changed here minus Elvin it’s the elephant in the room I can’t look past it um so that’s something they need to to address with is two of those coming at even strength uh coach carbury aims to shake things up during five on five play to bring back their scoring momentum that there’s a lot of skilled players in that locker room minus Alex oetkin that it’s not just all about oie uh that they are really going to need to batten down the hatches and get it done uh in his absence so I talked about the forwards the defensive pairings um against the New Jersey Devils uh were you know you take a look at it the defense struggled as well as the offense the lineup features John Carlson with Martin ferari Jacob Chan and with Trevor van rdik and rasmith sandine paired with Matt Roy um so what we saw against the Devils uh will remain intact um so and you know with some of that there has been some tinkering and I know that we’ve seen uh different types of success with rasma sandine used in different roles and Martin farari that what Spencer Carberry and his assistant saw on the ice against the Devils he’s going all in and as I record this now that could very well be what’s on the ice on Monday but again a lot could change between now and then uh but that is what it looks like now on the defensive side the pairings against uh the New Jersey Devils will remain intact against the Panthers you know we could go into the weeds a little bit and argue about his CH I think that chck often times is better with Carlson that kind of thing but it’s a work in progress and just you know even what we see in the game against the Panthers isn’t going to be set in stone it is a fluid situation and I expect it to change if the capitals do not get production uh maintaining consistency is crucial as the team prepares for a two game Road Trip in Florida uh coinciding with the annual men tours trip and despite the fact that oetkin uh is injured he is along on the trip um and it’s in it’s huge uh having him present in the locker room could provide the Boost the team needs to break this losing streak as he is the guy uh that’s in the tunnel waiting to go on the ice uh that’s hyping everyone up making some silly comments and you know just getting the morale of the team up uh for the opponent so I think it’s important uh to just have Alex oet out there period as well um so you take a look at a vkin will be off the ice for four to six weeks but he will travel with the team uh for with his father-in-law for the father’s trip so a good uh thing for a veteran to be along for moral support uh that kind of thing and hopefully uh he can be that guy that gets the capitals out of this funk all right so coming up here after the break we’ll talk about if what we see on the ice doesn’t work say they mix they match they do this that and the other thing and it’s still not enough if they need some goal scoring they may have an option in Hershey who am I talking about I’ll discuss Straight Ahead prize picks the lineup is quite a vacuum of goal scoring putting up 15 goals who is going to make up that deficit I mean there are players that could potentially ostensibly uh fill that void but if they need an option they may have one internally uh within the organization in Hershey uh in Ethan Frank and should come as no surprise as I’ve spoke about him for quite some time he is the man with the Need for Speed uh that I think that at some point the capitals should give him a look if what’s on the ice right now is not working Ethan Frank uh recently here just to kind of exemplify what I’m talking about delivered an outstanding performance in the game against the Syracuse Crunch scoring two points and and helping secure a victory and his stats the back of his hockey card in the card in the American League in 19 games played 12 goals six assists good for 18 points pretty pretty good uh considering that that is the American League one notch down uh from the NHL Again Brad Hy said the line between the NHL and AHL is Razor fine I agree with his assessment uh his goal achievement he scored his League leading 12th goal of the Season late in the first period setting the tone for the game he has been the guy that’s been stirring the drink uh for the Hershey Bears in part uh it is a team that has a lot of scoring as well but Ethan Frank is definitely one of those key elements and one of the players uh that we’ve heard about for the longest time maybe if you’re in every day of the show you know I’ve mentioned that we need a longer look now things have changed quite a bit the capitals made some big Acquisitions in the offseason either via trade or free agency and there’s not a lot of open holes but there if there’s any weakness if there’s a player that’s out there that’s not pulling their weight in the forward capacity I think that Ethan Frank could definitely be worth a look uh assists and contributions in the third period in that game Frank played a crucial role by assisting on a power play goal which extended the Bears lead uh coming up clutch answering the Bell on on the big stage and key moments that is what Frank does and um ultimately uh you know there has been a short leash on him we’ve seen him in preseason action and here and there but ultimately has not you know really popped off the page I guess I’m going to put pick dubet uh in that category as well that on paper they seem like they should just be a knockout for the capitals not always the case but I think worthy of another look uh and then in that particular game during the shootout he secured the victory with a decisive wrist shot that really helped the Bears in that game so uh I think that you know his speed his goal scoring that those two things in it of himself are huge and I think like I say is worth another look if in fact what’s going on on the ice is not cutting the mustard so this performance brought Frank’s season total up to 18 points in just 19 games ranking him sixth in the AHL not just for the bears but in all of the American Hockey League and this is what I’m talking about if you are capitals fans and you’re kind of just cap Centric and you don’t pay attention to what’s going on down in the farm well the Hershey Bears well if you don’t know are a pretty good team back toback called their cup victories they play some great hockey and a lot of those players um are poised for greater things some of the players that are playing on the C Capal right now cut their teeth playing in the Hershey Bears so uh Ethan Frank I think is deserving of a look at some point like I’ve said uh if what we see on the ice is not working he would definitely help fill the role of speed uh as he is a very quick skater and potential goal scoring I think could be a huge addition to this team all right once again I want to thank you for joining me on this edition of lockd on capitals and making it your first listen of the day for your second listen find locked on fantasy
