back here on CBS Sports HQ presented by Bell for show me the bracket here we go oh yeah Texas advances to face Arizona state in the quarterfinals Peach Bowl New Year’s day as you see three of the four quarterfinal matchups are set Texas and Arizona State a meeting of the 2023 and 2024 Big 12 Champions as they one goes to the SEC one goes from the Pack 12 to the Big 12 Texas won the only prior meeting 5234 in the 2007 Holiday Bowl that was back with Colt McCoy and Jamal Charles and they ran away with that one and this meeting will be highlighted by the running backs Jaden blue Quint Tron Weisner and cam scabo CBS Sports 8q presented by B for Property Restoration back here with the two-time Super Bowl champ Bryant mcfaden and former Louisiana running back emry hunt and emry this matchup is running back based yeah cam scabo Jaden blue quent Tron Weisner you’re probably going to give the edge to Texas because of what you just saw against Clemson 292 rushing yards but you know cam scabo can get up and down that field and he runs with power yeah he did it at two program Sacramento State and also Arizona State and what’s unique about this matchup is you have Arizona State being the team that kind of represents the Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl type team this is the underdog this this is a Cinderella team so you know they’re going to come into this match up ready to go the issue I have so far just initially as we’re talking about this game as we now know who the matchup is is it would be different if it was about scheme like okay they got to prepare for this this this and this they got to prepare for physicality you can’t just go in the waight room and say okay we got to get physical for the Run game that we’re going to see from Texas and the speed you can’t just go run track so this is a different matchup for Arizona State but I’m excited to see how it plays out because we know this is a team that everyone is pointing at say why are they in the postseason but they won the Big 12 they earned the right to be here and I’m excited to see how they compete against Texas you know for me when I watch cam scatterable number one he is the engine that gets their offense going but he reminds me a lot of a great Auburn great and Rudy Johnson who played for the Cincinnati Bengals small C compact type of back but he leans on you and he runs with nothing but power and he has a really unusual Burst when you look at him it seems like he doesn’t have a burst but he can get from zero to 60 extremely fast and don’t forget about his ability to catch passes out of the back field he had over 500 yards receiving over 2,000 yards of total offense so when you get things going through him it helps the entire offense out Emory hakee the concern that I have for Arizona State can they slow down Texas offensively you talked about that holiday score that we saw back in 2007 50 something to 30 something I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same like entertaining game because I don’t know if the Sun Devils defensively can get the necessary stops to be able to slow down and explosion of offensive players like the long horse have on their side in terms of running the football that we saw tonight against Clemson and you know they still can throw it around the yard so this is about can Arizona State get the timely stops we know we don’t expect them to see them shut Texas down but can they get the timely stops and situational moments to give their offense an extra possession you agree with that assessment I agree cuz that’s where it’s going to come down to because you saw how Clemson fought themselves back in the ball game big plays we know Arizona sayate can generate the big plays but Clemson couldn’t get that timely stop when necessary to get off the field to get the ball back that’s going to be this game could play out exactly the same way how we just witnessed Clemson Texas play out and it’s about can Arizona State make those necessary adjustments and here’s the thing the great Bill Walsh used to always say whoever runs the first trick play is going to be the best trick play because you want to get out there first so expect them to be Playbook is going to be wide open it’s a one game season Arizona St is going to go for the jugular early and if Texas can withstand that withstand at storm that’ll be key and also for Arizona state if you go back and look at their entire schedule and you kind of assess it the team that scored the most points against them was UCF now they beat UCF but what gave them issues with the speed the misdirection things that really posed to be an issue for their on the defense aside and you look at some of the speed that UCF has they were pretty fast but they’re not as fast as the LGH horns so can they make the necessary adjustments because to your point Emory which was big you are who you are at this moment you can’t make any changes so in terms of adjusting you just got to be able to execute and adjust on the Fly based on what you are going against on either side of the football field what Texas didn’t do today was beat themselves right they play disciplined football so if you are Arizona State that’s first and foremost mission number one don’t beat ourselves y so when you look at Texas in terms of perhaps a fatal flaw what would you look at and go that right if if they lose this game this will be the reason why turnovers from their quarterback who has been prone to throw some bad turnovers at times and Quinn ears in the secondary play for Texas because we saw in the second half klubnik was finding some holes that led to opportunities for uh Clemson when you look at Clemson pass catchers they have some pretty good guys that can catch passes but none of them are as good as Jordan Tyson the wide receiver won for Arizona State guy who had over a thousand yards around 10 receiving touchdowns I’m not if I’m not mistaken he’s an NFL prospect if he gets going in that against that secondary it can open up things for cam scattero so that he is out for the season with the upper body injury so done so don’t even have him so that becomes a question mark there how you going to fill in for his replacement so that’s an issue right there because when you look at Texas and you look at Arizona State to me this is a situation where you can’t stub your toe if you’re Texas right you have to take care of business CU I look at this one of two ways for Kenny Dillingham we’re happy to be here we expect to win we have this eight- win turnaround from a year ago Steve sarkeesian this is the next step for him do you want to be that Elite head coach or you just want to be that good head coach in the SEC this is a chance for him to prove that with this Texas Squad because if Quinn youer is not getting the job done hey Arch come on in let’s go rescue us right I mean that’s kind of the the the mentality well we kind of saw that a little bit in the SEC Championship game right they brought in Arch for a few plays that kind of jump start things and to your point this is a game even though you know this is playoff football where it’s good on good if your Texas against Arizona State you’re supposed to beat Arizona State you know many people F felt like Arizona state had no business being into the playoffs yet having an open a first round buy so to your point all the pressure is on Steve sarkeesian and his Longhorn team because if you’re Arizona State no one thought you were going to be here remember they were picked to finish dead last if not second to last in the Big 12 so for them to be to this point they have exceeded the expectation and it shifts all the all the pressure on the Longhorns team wise well on the line tells you the disparity between the teams right I mean Arizona State’s going to tell you hey we got a fighting chance and they do there’s no question about it but the line is Texas 13 and a half what do you make of that it’s interesting because it’s based off point of attack play and they’re looking at Texas’s offensive line and Texas’s defensive line just suppos what we seeing so far from Arizona State I think the biggest determined factor in this game is going to be whether or not you trust your quarterback to play above the X’s and O’s because everything is not going to be clean we know Arizona state is willing to go and let their quarterback Lev go out there and do what he has to do yours we just just talked about this can he replicate what we saw in the beginning part of the season I know Health depends on that you know in terms of like how he was able to move within the pocket and and throw from different arm angles and create above the X’s and O’s can he get back to that because Arizona State in a one game situation a one game season is going to throw the kitchen sink at him defensively he’s going to have to adjust and make sure he’s able to handle his business in that regard well I know in terms of playoff football I never played in Collegiate football playoff games before of course this the first year but in NFL games that I experience two things you need to have happen in terms of winning ball games get off to a fast start and and control the line of scrimmage so let’s go back and dissect what we’ve seen so far in this CFB playoff weekend Notre Dame got off to a fast start they control the line of scrimmage on either side of the football field Penn State SMU Penn State got off to a fast start they control the line of scrimmage most recently Texas against Clemson got off to a fast start and they control the line of scrimmage that’s the key for either side until your point when you look at the line being 13-point favorites it’s safe to say we know where the the the the meat is for Texas in the trenches on either side of the football field if they can control the line of scrimmage and get off to a fast start granted it will be at a neutral setting no question they should be okay but that’s the main thing that I love to watch in terms of playoff football which team gets off to a fast start which team can control the line of scrimmage because that’s the telling sign in which direction the victory is going to come from and you got a fast track in at land at the peach B about say I love that it’s indoors no conditions no complaints and they just Texas was just there a few weeks ago in the SEC Championship Game yep so they will feel right at home against Arizona State New Year’s Day in the Peach Bowl Arizona State in Texas Texas a 13 and a half Point favorite and uh 12 and two thus far that’s backto back 12- win seasons for the second time in school history got to win a couple more games to win a Natty standing in their way right now Arizon state in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Day
