in to locked on reds my name is Jeff Carr and I am a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan I’ve been hosting this podcast whether Solo or co-hosted now for over six seasons this is like my seventh offseason talking about the Reds every single day and I’m happy to be talking with you here today there’s so much to get to because Jonathan India is no longer a Cincinnati Red and the Reds added a pitch to their staff that makes me feel like the reliability of the starting rotation just went up I feel like this is a good trade we will discuss why on this emergency LIVE edition of the locked on reds off with this because Jonathan India has been traded to the Kansas City Royals the first report came last weekend uh really the most concrete rumors that we had seen about Jonathan India really in about the last 16 months I mean you remember last offseason it really got going with the whole idea of well you know the reds are kind of okay thinking about possibly trading Jonathan India and then it came out last Saturday that the Reds had a concrete rumored offer with the Royals about Brady singer and it being that detailed that specific made me feel as though there was something to this this wasn’t just a well yeah people are calling and N crawl is listening this was a concrete thing and now the full trade terms are Jonathan indiaia and Joey weer outfielder Joey weer for right-handed pitcher Brady singer Brady singer really brings a lot to this starting rotation and I want to jump into him a lot in this episode but let’s start first with what Jonathan India brought to this team obviously Rookie of the Year in 2021 whenever he really got going with the Reds and ever since then he’s kind of been an enigma he’s been a team leader he’s been very vocal he’s been a fan favorite but if you break down his performances he is a perfect guy and we we love to do this on the lockdown Reds podcast where you have like blind comparisons and you’re like all right look at this guy take away his name take away his picture and all his you know his beautiful long flowing locks what is his performance Jonathan India’s performance was just okay it was fine and and in 2024 was his best year since his rookie of the year season but even then I wondered if that’s the ceiling for him Jonathan India was fantastic with his plate discipline he did not strike out very much he walked a lot he was a good asset as an on base machine in the leadoff spot but if you needed a big hit it wasn’t him and if you really needed a good play at second base it wasn’t him either now I say that knowing that he improved and we’ve said this on the podcast too that he improved with the glove statistically at second base but I think we all know his limitations there were quite a few times during the season where we’re like are you going to turn a double play at any point there were quite a few times during the season where it’s like he’s going to get to that ball he’s going to stop that ball but he’s not going to be able to throw that guy out his arm was fit for second base so the big thing here and it’s only you know Kismet that I’m wearing the Matt mlan t-shirt tonight is that with Matt mlan showing that he is healthy he is ready to go he’s going to hit the ground running when they get to Good Year in February he looked good in the Arizona fall league he looked healthy in the Arizona fall league he’s ready to play if Matt mlan is ready to play he’s your second baseman because he’s the best second baseman on the roster and he’s probably arguably better defensively at least on a consistency basis than ell de Cruz although Ed the Cruz has a far higher ceiling than does Matt mlan with the glove shortstop but you can make the argument that Matt mlan could play shortstop too there’s something about India that the versatility just isn’t there and with the Reds signing Santiago espanol mere I want to say it was like an hour before the trade was reported with the Royals then I thought that was kind of it because you can’t have Santiago espanol and Jonathan India on the same bench we have been saying and every day as we’ll know on the lockdown Reds podcast we’ve been saying ever since the rumor came about that the best value that Jonathan India could bring to this roster was through a trade that improved it in other ways because he wasn’t going to get the number of it bats that he got last year with a healthy Matt mlan with fingers crossed Lord will and a healthy Christian incarna and Strand and hopefully a bit of a bounce back from Noel V Marte the at bats that morte and CES don’t get will go to jamer candelerio and when those two guys are playing candelerio is going to be your DH it’s hard for me to argue for Jonathan India over jamer candelario at the DH spot so where does he play he has no arm to play in the Outfield he has no arm to play Third Base and he he doesn’t have the range and speed and arm to play Short Stop Santiago espanol can at least play a passable Short Stop he can play a passable third base let’s not even start about the Outfield but hey he played there too uh but he will play second base a lot too so espanol does everything you want a bench utility player to do India didn’t but the Royals were looking for a leadoff man the Royals were looking for an onbase machine that they could stick at DH or second base boom Jonathan India is ready for you and oh by the way they got Brady singer we’ve been saying all week long that the reds are better with Brady singer in the rotation and Jonathan indiaan in Kansas City than vice versa and I firmly believe that this is a trade that right now we as fans are attached to Jonathan India we’re not going to like it I still have some reservations about I’m not saying that I am 1,00% like yeah had to get rid of Jonathan India for Brady singer for this one specific trade this is a perfect trade but it’s a good trade for the Reds and for the Royals I think it’s good for both sides and I know people don’t like to hear that they want to say well the Reds obviously won the deal or the Royals obviously I think both teams win this deal Joey weamer is kind of a throwin I think that you know the reported rumor that Ken Rosenthal first broke with C Tren Rose CR last weekend was that the two teams weren’t close when it was a one for one of India for singer but if Joey weamer was all it took to get it done then I’m totally okay with that look Joey weamer could have been a fun story you see grad all this other stuff but the Reds gave him two plate appearances and decided that’s all they needed from him last year last year when the Outfield was bad when as I mentioned a moment ago Santiago espanol got looks and right Santiago espanol got more played appearances as an outfielder than Joey weamer did last year they weren’t going to give him the opportunity or the work that he needed to prove he could be the Reds every day outfielder so that just wasn’t going to happen this was a trade born out of opportunity and this was a trade that Nick CW got right I believe that that will bear itself out as the season goes along sitting here on November 22nd Friday you know the snow melted there was snow on the ground like 12 hours ago you couldn’t tell me that now because there isn’t any but getting ready for turkey day next week week it probably doesn’t feel like a great deal but I’m telling you in August when we’re looking back and Brady singer hasn’t missed a start we’re going to love this deal and Brady singer is the biggest reason why so I wanted to start off with Jonathan India because he has brought so much to this team over the last couple of years albeit from a performance that you could objectively say was okay and not really that great but he really worked hard for this team and now he is working hard as a good trade ship to bring in the kind of starting pitcher that makes you feel good about this starting rotation we all love watching appreciate everybody down in the chat Matt Yates puts it nicely loved India don’t love seeing him gone but it’s a good deal shocked they made the move more than anything and that’s where I’m at too my first initial thought is yes I love this deal but I’m kind of interested that the Reds actually made a creative move and then you also had some other folks talking in I I I love Jonathan Lynn’s point of view this is great for the team with too many middle infielders on the roster and that’s the case as well like we have talked about nit crawls adverse feelings about trading prospects so if you’re not going to trade prospects and you’re not going to spend big on free agency you got to improve the roster some way and Brady singer doesn’t actually make that much more than Jonathan I think through arbitration I think he’s going to make like s or8 million this year but that’s only like one to one and a half million more than what Jonathan India was making and Robert Davis makes this point and this is going to how I’m going to segue into this is that singer has shown that he’s an Innings eater something that the Reds have needed Brady singer is not going to be the staff Ace Brady singer might not be the second best pitcher on this team but Brady singer brings reliability something that we haven’t seen from this pitching staff since Luis Castillo spent a full year here before you know the year that he was traded the Reds haven’t had a 30 start guy and and while we while Steve and I discussed which by the way Steve is is working tonight that’s the reason that I’m I’m solo with this but this is big news and I really wanted to get the chance to talk Reds with you here as this news broke um and he’ll be back on Monday but when it comes to Brady singer he has he started 32 games last year he started 29 the year before and stepen I have discussed that we could probably see Hunter Green making 30 starts you can squint really hard and see Andrew abbit making 30 starts I would bet money that nicod Doo doesn’t make 30 starts I don’t think anybody else does either like I think Rett louder probably makes 25 starts this year maybe 20 to 25 starts 25 might be the top Nick Martinez I really hope starts like 28 games but the most he’s ever started in a year was his rookie season back in 2014 when he started 24 games so you don’t have that dude like the Reds ran into this two straight years where they ran into a problem where they legitimately had to schedule a bullpen day every fifth day Brady singer is the kind of guy that you can hopefully get rid of that idea Bullpen days were used in the playoffs by the Dodgers by the Yankees by everybody in the playoffs as strategical moves not out of necessity they were used by the Reds last year out of necessity because at one point literally everybody on the starting rotation for opening day was either hurt or traded Frankie Montes was in Milwaukee but I I I think that Brady singer is a guy that you may you feel better about this starting rotation stability and I think that that is the key here you don’t need Brady singer to be the ace you you don’t need Brady singer to come in here and have like a 3.0 erra with you know over a strikeout per inning or whatnot that’s not who he is anyway last season he had a 3.71 erra but his expected erra was a little bit higher than that says that he was a little bit lucky his FIP was a little bit higher than that says he was a little bit lucky but Brady singer is a pitch to contact type of guy he is not going to be pitching around the Zone trying to get guys to swing and Miss he is not going to be that guy that is is constantly hitting High strikeout totals we’re going to get to the point in the season the regular season where you’re going to see prop bets on Brady singer strikeouts and I don’t know that I’m going to be telling you to take the over every day as will know I love saying take the over don’t know that Brady singer strikeouts is going to be one of those things but when it comes to what he can provide for the Reds is that he’s gonna be a guy that gets there and he’s going to be there every fifth day the the res the reservations I have about him is that he does allow some home runs and that’s going to be something that Derrik Johnson needs to work with him with he doesn’t come in here with a sterling reputation of never having allowed a home run remember we said that um about Brent Suter whenever the red signed Brent sudor from the Rockies and how he pitched in Colorado and he never allowed a home run Brady singer allowed home runs in Kaufman Stadium Kaufman Stadium Is Not a Home Run Park so there’s going to be a little bit of concern concern with that and there have been concerns I’ve already talked with a few of our locked on hosts from some other locked on uh shows around the league that are like I don’t know if I love this deal for the Reds but I do because this now gives me at least one guy that I know that I can plan on him being there every fifth day I hope that hunter green will be I hope that Andrew Abbott will be but the reliability level of Brady singer is so much higher than the those other guys now a little bit about Brady singer because he is a sinker slider type pitcher very different from what the Reds have on their current really anybody on the pitching staff but definitely on the starting rotation his Sinker averages about 92 93 miles an hour he’s not going to blow anybody’s doors off but his Sinker and his slider keep the ball on the ground last year he had a 48% ground ball rate he was good enough to be in the top 20% of the league with that that’s not something that the Reds excelled at and quite frankly it’s something that we’re going to have to ask the infield to be better about whenever the ground whenever the ball is hit on the ground let’s turn those into outs but that’s not on Brady singer Brady singer just got to get the ball on the ground and he’s very good at doing that he also is Elite and when you look at his baseball somont pages I love to do he is Elite at getting extension so baseball Savant is able to track when ever a guy is in his motion his mechanics when he releases the ball is he closer to home plate or further away than other pitchers he’s closer to home plate so while his velocity is low on the gun it plays up because of the extension so hitters are going to be a little bit deceived by Brady Sor and quite frankly if you go back and you look at the start that he pitched in Cincinnati of last year there’s a little bit of that that I think the Reds were watching and they’re like hm this could be a guy because he threw six shutout Innings with six K in a walk he did allow five hits but he was able to scatter all of those so there’s something to it that yeah it’s one game I’m not going to say that that is what we should expect shut outs every day Brady singer baby for the Sai Young but he is reliable and this is the kind of guy that hopefully gives you five to six Innings every timeout every fifth day he already comes into this pitching staff when we go into spring training and we like start previewing position groups and things like this he pitched more Innings than anybody hunter green led the team in Innings last year he threw 150 in a third Innings Brady singer threw 179 in two3 Innings I love this deal and I get it that there’s reservations about certain parts of it and you know we we touched on the Jonathan India of it all on the early goings of this show here but really I’m very happy with what nck crawl was able to do here because he came into this offseason knowing that the Outfield is a problem but so is the depth in the starting rotation now this does a lot to help out that problem of the depth in the starting rotation I want to discuss that a little bit more on Monday I’m not going to get into that too crazy here today I want to get into that with Steve but a brief preview of that Rett louder doesn’t have to be on the opening day starting rotation as cool as that would be the reds don’t have to do that now or guess what if Nicolo is still having problems with blisters he doesn’t have to be on the opening day starting rotation now you can move things around a little bit now that you know that you’ve got four guys that you can count on in green Abbott Martinez and singer so who’s that fifth guy that’ll be the fun thing to really discuss during this spring training because you you also the up and cominging studs and Chase Burns and Chase Petty what’s Connor Phillips looking like this spring training all of those guys get to be gravy now instead of like pillars holding everything up and I’m so happy about that but you know the Reds made a few moves uh a few other moves outside of the trade that we will discuss coming up next the best way to get down to the ballpark get down to the event that you’re going to is with game time because the live chat uh we are live here talking about this deal and and the moves that the Reds made here on non-tender Deadline day Steve is with us in the chat like I said he’s at work right now so he’s currently skirting on his uh other work responsibilities to talk with us but he agrees he likes the deal um and he believes that both teams won this trade I I I really feel like that is the general consensus that I Come Away With It Right like modern day sports analysis is all about who won the trade you know who lost the trade who got fleeced is there a is there a absolutely just daed general manager out there that has no clue what he’s doing I don’t get that feeling out of this deal I think that both general managers the Royals and the Reds looked at their team needs and they helped out their team needs with this trade Jonathan India was excess he was not going to be the opening day second baseman so long as Matt mlan continues to prove that he’s healthy he wasn’t really going to play too many other positions you remember last year by the way before we get into the other moves of the day you remember last year before opening day really halfway through spring training there was lots of chatter about well you know India’s been working out in left field India’s been taking reps at first base I just don’t think that any of that enthused the Reds and nit crawl took that with him to Terry Fran cona and said what do you think and Terry Fran cona was like I think we can move on I think that we can better fill the roster with a trade and that’s exactly what the Reds did here now they made two other moves on non-tender Deadline day they did one thing so we said that there was a really good chance India could be traded today and we said that the team is better off if they made this trade I also said that the Reds should move on from Santiago espanol they did not do that however they did a very smart thing because according to spot track the website that I routinely use throughout the offseason for financials and stuff like that when it comes to the Reds said that Santiago espanol through arbitration should make somewhere around $3.6 million next year the Reds avoided arbitration by signing a one-year contract with him worth $2.4 million so got themselves a $1.2 million coupon I like that deal because now that gives you the stability on the infield he wasn’t always a guy that I felt like the Reds would be better without it’s just in the off season this is a numbers game how does he factor into this roster and is he worth the number that you have to pay him that’s where the Reds decided that Jonathan India didn’t make sense for them but Santiago espanol did in a world where they kept both guys and it was for the 3.6 instead of the 2.4 they were looking at like $10 million for those two players so instead of $10 million for the two they paid 2.4 for the one and I love the way that worked out one thing I don’t love though and I was kind of looking forward to seeing him healthy I was looking forward to him pitching out of the bullpen in 2025 that is Ian jaibo he was non-tendered by the Reds today he wasn’t due to make a ton of money I think it was like 1.5 or something like like that but it does make me wonder a little bit when I think about Ian Jibo and the struggles that he went through last season with injuries it felt like every time he was this close something else happened he had forearm issues he had shoulder issues all this different stuff kept him off the field and I remember that I got the chance back in April to talk with him up in Dayton after a rehab outing and he said man I feel good and the plan at that point was for him to go to Louisville make some appearances do a couple of back-to-back appearance days and then he would get called up and after he went to Louisville and made a few back toback back-to-back appearances they shut him down and they never really got him back going again there was constant reports that they would you know ramp him up in August or ramp him up get him going for the last month of the Season or something like that and I just never believed it and now that we are here and he got non-tendered makes me think there was something else going on that maybe the injuries he sustained are a little bit worse than we thought now there’s a chance he could come back on some kind of minimum deal like a prove it like a minor league invite to spring training get a veteran minimum if he makes the team but I don’t foresee there being a huge market for him based on the injuries I think you get non-tendered because there was something going on um so I I think that at the end of the day that’s really what the move was going to be but over overall love the moves today very good trade by the Reds sending Jonathan Indie and Joey weamer Joey weamer if if you heard our episode a couple of days ago we went through a list of 10 outfielders that were currently on the 40-man roster only three of them we even sort of kind of liked one of them was Spencer steer one of them was TJ Friel and one of them was Jake fry now I am very enthused I thought there was a chance that Jake fry could get non-tendered but I’m glad that they didn’t do that so I’m I’m I’m looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team next year he is at least projected to make somewhere around two and a half two to two and a half million so I’ll be interested to see that but coming up on Monday going to discuss more in depth with Steve about what this rotation looks like about how this move really helps out Rhett louder really helps out Chase burn and Chase Petty the chases we should just call them the chase firm or something the Chase Law Firm Chase squared I don’t know Chase Petty Chase Barns and how it helps out Conor Phillips like all those guys I think this is a good move for the team but this is also a good move individually for them but I appreciate you for joining me on this live and I still think there’s a couple of big moves to be made whether they be trades or free agent additions they need an outfielder that’s got to happen you can’t go through this offseason and not get
