one are the Cincinnati Reds about to move a piece of the major league starting rotation to get an outfielder we’re going to tell you on today’s locked on reds you are locked on red your daily Cincinnati Reds podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome in to locked on reds my name is Jeff Carr his name is Steve offenbaker and we are lifelong Cincinnati Reds fans we’re so glad that you’re alongside us here today look Steve and I have been talking about the Reds combined like 14 years in a podcasting form and we love this Cincinnati Reds team we’re glad that you do too lockdown Reds is part of the lockdown podcast Network we are your team every single day and lockdown Reds is for the Reds fan that knows what happened they want to know why and quite frankly Not A lot’s happened in the winter meeting so far except for rumors so we will continue to be talking about these rumors and how the reds are being linked to Luis Robert and why there is a bit of a twinge of could the Reds be offering up a pitcher in this deal we’ll tell you why we think that here in just a moment we’re also going to look at some rumors about a potential backup catcher coming into play is he the best option for the Reds we’ll discuss that in a few and then later on in today’s show we’ll we talk about the new guy in the clubhouse via the rule five draft that’s all coming up on today’s lockdown Reds podcast that is brought to you by FanDuel you can get every season going with a big return over on FanDuel new customers can place a $5 bet and you’ll get started with 150 in bonus bets if you win that first $ five bet just go to fanduel.com right now all right Steve where we will start right now is with the fact that the reds are continuing to be linked there were more updated rumors Gordon whtm said that he can confirm that Nick crawl has had a conversation with the white socks about Luis Robert uh there are people on MLB Network like Matt mersan on hot stove talking about that the reds are the best landing spot for Lis Robert so here we are this this trade rumor that doesn’t seem to want to go away which I think in and of carries some weight is linking the Reds to Luis Robert albeit the cost of him and everything but I think that we can discern what could be part of this trade package based on some other rumors that the reds are linked to well the Reds continue to be linked to starting pitching and the only way that that makes sense is if Nick crawl is cooking on something that involves trading away one of the guys they’ve got already and I don’t know how I feel about that but it’s really the only thing that makes sense for me because if you look at Luis Robert and what he’s done with the Chicago White Sox Jeff you know he had MVP votes in 2023 so uh you know 5.0 War player you pushed up you know that magic five to six in war this guy has some Talent um and it’s gonna take a lot to get him and if we’re talking about sending a major league pitcher I think that might relieve some of the burden on the Prospect Capital as far as trading away the entire Farm to get a guy back um but you you have to weigh this and you have to be really careful and I’m interested to see where you land on this Jeff because Luis Robert is a guy that you know you look at last season 2024 100 games exactly that he managed to play for the Chicago White Socks the uh the best year of his career 2023 All-Star MVP votes etc etc uh you know 5.0 wore 145 games but prior to that 98 games 68 games 56 games guy has a hard time staying on the field and I don’t know how comfortable I am trading away Major League ready pitching Major League already pitching to get a guy back that we don’t know if he’s gonna be able to play or not I think that this would be a move you get the press conference out for right you put the backdrop up you get the mic set up and you bring down Bob and you bring down Nick crawl and you bring down Brad meter and you hand him a jersey this is that kind of move we were talking about Taylor Ward on yesterday’s podcast that’s not that type of move at least not in my estimation Luis Robert’s the kind but with Lise Robert you’re gonna have that press conference at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center because that’s where he spends most of his time I I I think that there is a bit of great photo off right there in the lobby of UC Cincinnati you know you bring out the doctors and the nurses that are going to be taking care of him and it’ll be a great press conference Jeff I do think that there’s something to that worry and I think think that if anything that would probably drive down the trade price not to the point that it’s like okay we’re not giving up anything for him but maybe to the point that it’s not like four Top 10 Prospects for him which by the way Garrett crochet the white socks just traded him to the Red Sox he did not uh get four Top 10 Prospects for the Red Sox so who knows maybe maybe you can get Luis Robert for a reasonable deal on this especially if you include that pitcher but that is why and and and the the rumors that the reds are currently linked to starting pitching only persists yesterday as Nick pavetta was talked about being the Reds have contacted Nick peta’s agent to see exactly what it would cost to bring him to Cincinnati he is a free agent starting pitcher has been with the Red Sox has been around the American League too and and you know he’s pitched in the postseason so that’s kind of nice but I I I’m with you I think that it doesn’t make sense to go spend free agent money on a starter right now I mean Alex Cobb got $15 million a year from the Detroit Tigers from the free agent list if you ask our friends over at lockdown Guardians that’s insane so when you look at these guys that are out there the Reds almost would have to overpay too much to sign back that Talent so I ask you this Stephen and I I look at this even from the Outfield perspective because you and I have been on the record quite a bit of saying go get teoscar go get Anthony santand there and let’s make this Outfield great again but what’s more likely to happen are the Reds going to outbid other teams with actual money on the free agent Market or are the Reds going to outbid other teams on the trade market with Prospect Capital because I think it’s the trade route I I I think that as much as we would love it to be free agent the the for whatever reason the Reds just aren’t going to be if if if they’re going they’re not going to they’re not going to outbid they’re not going to outbid the Yankees they’re not gonna outbid the Dodgers they’re not gonna outbid those guys in a true bidding war um and and quite frankly I don’t think they’re gonna outbid those guys in a prospect War um they’re they certainly weren’t going to outbid the Red Sox in a prospect War they just had the opportunity to do so and didn’t um I I look at this Jeff and if they can’t go get a guy for this Outfield um you we talked about this yesterday I think the more I think about it the more I like a matchup with the angels to get a trade done I I I like I really like that deal we talked about yesterday um looking at Luis Robert and what he’s going to cost based on his 2023 season and now that’s a season where he went in home runs in 2022 he had 12 home runs he went to 38 home runs in 2023 but then only hit 14 home runs last year he went from 56 RBIs in 2022 to 80 back to 35 the question you got to ask yourself is who is the real Luis Robert I think he’s the guy that played all those other years I think 2023 is an outlier that being said I would rather go into opening day with an outfield of Spencer steer TJ frel and one of Frey and Fairchild than I would be to trade away a major league starting pitcher to bring in this kind of an unknown this kind of a flute this kind of a dude that only did it one time I don’t think he’s a fluke and and I don’t think that 2024 is indicative of who he is I can give him a pass for 2024 because think about what he played with had he played better had he hit 250 maybe had he hit 300 maybe do you know how how many games the White Soxs would have won then they might have won 50 they might have won 52 games or something like that they only won 41 games last year like there’s got to be a psychological thing these men are competitive people they have a much more competitive Drive than you and I ever have dreamed of and to just sit there for 162 games and you just get pounded one day after the next and it’s not even close and there’s not really a moment that you can point to and You’ be like this is why I worked my entire life to get to this baseball diamond right here and yeah I get it he’s making some money but when you’re sitting in the middle of a nothing blowout in the sixth inning and you’re getting your catcher warmed up to get out there and Pitch because you don’t want to hurt anybody else and and and and you’re the center fielder you’re the allstar you’re the Superstar of the team and you’re looking around you’re like what am I doing I get the human element of it I understand that I give him a pass for 2024 I would be I I would be excited I I don’t know what the trade package would be but I would be excited if if it were Nick Lolo I’d take that really for a guy whose batting average has gone down every year since 2021 a guy who’s on base percentage has gone down every year since 2021 a guy that’s had one good performance year in his entire career you’re willing to trade away the the potential of aor better than any outfielder of the Reds have he is better than any Outfield that’s really not saying a whole lot the question is are you really willing to trade away Major League ready pitching you can never have enough you told me yesterday you can never have enough pitching and we have talked about on this show that if you strictly platoon fry and Fairchild that is a Major League Baseball outfielder of 115 Ops plus that’s an outfielder that’s 15% better than League average how is trading for Luis Robert maybe being a guy worth what you’re talking about trading for him because because it follows along with something that I have said going into this offseason and I’m going to tell you what that is coming up next there’s never a wrong time during any sports season to get a big return over at FanDuel because right now new customers can get 150 in bonus bets when you win your first $5 bet you don’t have to be like that one guy I remember heing that there was a guy that bet $3 million on a game yester on the Eagles to beat the Panthers that was crazy talk you don’t have to bet that you know just put five doll down that’s all you got to do plus you can check out baseball Futures there’s the NL pennet the future for the NL pennet the red zods actually got longer since wodo went to the Mets they they are now 40 to one to win the national league look they’re gonna get better and Terry Fran cona is gonna make them better so I look that just seems juicy to me I’m throwing a couple of bucks on that trust me you should do it too over at Fan f.com get a big payday today on your sports knowledge over at FanDuel make every moment more they are an official sponsor of the NFL we’re talking Red’s Baseball here today and every day every week every month all year long pre-season spring training postseason hopefully offseason we’ve got you covered with at least 30 minutes of red talk each and every day all right Jeff we left there at the end of that last segment uh with me basically asking you a question and I I turned the floor over to you about why it would be better to make this deal than to roll with an outfielder that we already know we have that’s 15% better than League average so the main thing for this offseason was Nick craw is gonna have to get creative because you can’t just run it back you can’t just bring back the same roster and expect it to be better um I think that if you roll into opening day with Spencer steer slated to play most of his game in the Outfield and that’s a bit of a failure I especially believe if you roll into this game this season with the The Outfield tandem needed that you need Stuart Fairchild for 30% of your 34% of your games is how many games they face right left-handed pitching um I think that’s a fair I think he needs to be their fifth outfielder with that being said Luis Robert you’re not trading for the production you’re trading for what you perceive as production to be not what he’s already done and yes it’s looked bad in 2024 but if you look at 2023 and if you look at the games played 98 and 68 combined that’s like what 100 that’s that’s just a smidge over a full season’s worth across two seasons I’m okay with that because I believe that when it comes to Luis Robert there is otherworldly talent scouts grade him out super well with the hit tool the speed tool the glove the arm it’s all great we’re talking about a really good player kind of guy that as long as he does stay healthy and it’s hard to trade for health and I don’t think that he’s injury-prone any more than Matt mlan is that this guy would make this team better so when I look at when I look at Luis Robert if you could tell me let’s say it’s a package of nicod Doo uh you probably have to give up one of Cam col or sth Stewart and then you’re probably looking at like a middle of the range guy I don’t really know that name but Adam Ser serowski guy that really made a little bit of a rise through the system last last year left-handed pitcher for the Reds so you’re giving up those three guys for Luis Robert that really helps reset the white socks a bit and I don’t think that it hurts the Reds all that much so you’re willing to trade Nicolo and cam Collier in this deal for Luis Robert yeah get here WIS cam col doesn’t matter doesn’t matter we gonna I’m not listen I am not opposed to trading those guys but not for Louis freaking Robert Jr a guy that has been inconsistent a guy that can’t stay healthy you and talk about Matt mlan being injury-prone he got hurt one time this guy got hurt one year two year three year four years four out of five Big League Seasons this guy has been hurt in Miss significant amounts of time again his batting average has gone down every year for the last four years his on base percentage has gone down every year for the last four years and you want to trade away ldo and Coler I just I can’t Jeff I mean I want an outfielder as bad as the next person but I don’t want an outfielder for the sake of getting an outfielder and I am unconvinced that this guy is going to be an upgrade over the the fry Fairchild right field option I just I don’t see it I don’t see how this is an upgrade I believe if they make this move depending on just how much they have to give up but I believe if they make a trade for Luis Robert they’re going to be up there with the best moves this offseason but another move that the reds are looking at is upgrading their backup Catcher And there’s actually a guy that they’re linked to that would be that upgrade rumors uh have swirled that the Reds have contacted James mccan he was catching for the Orioles last season he’s been with a couple of different clubs the Mets he was drafted and he made his debut uh or he drafted by the White Sox made his debut with the Tigers all that good stuff he’s been around a bit but he’s the kind of guy that would be a bit of a upgrade over Luke meeley as your backup catcher and according to spot track he’s going to cost you around three million if not less than three million for this year I kind of like this yeah I I I like I would like this signing um if if you’re one of those folks that have been team yasmani grandal then you should be team James mccan because mcan’s a couple years younger uh he’s a little bit better numbers-wise he’s definitely uh light years ahead of what Luke mey put up last year you look at what mccan was able to do and and again these neither one of those guys grandall or mccan are young uh in baseball years but you know this would be mcan’s age 35 season uh he’s going to be coming off a year where his Ops plus was 94 so as a 34 year old catcher he performed just 6% below League average um I’ll take that as a backup catcher in Cincinnati uh 0.8 in War uh Slash Line’s not super impressive but you know it’s he’s a backup catcher 234 279 388 uh he was good for some RB and a little bit of Pop he hit eight home runs 31 RB eight home runs I I would take this and and I’ve been concerned because the backup catcher Market is not very deep and the Reds need to make a move I would hate to have to settle for a Luke meley or you know God help us use somebody that’s already in the system because let me tell you there is nobody Major League ready already in the system no and they signed Alex Jackson to a minor league contract he’ll start the year in Triple A he should be the emergency emergency catcher if anything is needed the reds don’t have a backup catcher currently I’ve seen some people say that I don’t know why they’re saying that Alex Jackson is not the guy James mccan could be the guy and one of the reasons that he wasn’t really on our radar is that spot track kind of ranks people like based on what they were paid last year and he actually made over10 Million last year but based on his performance and based on where he is in his career they project that he will not make anywhere near that moving forward and so that’s kind of why he was off our radar to begin with the thing that I worry slightly about is that his glove is comparably bad with Luke mey the luk mey’s didn’t have Luke meley did not have that good of a glove last year but neither did James mccan and and in fact according to stat cast his overall Fielding value Fielding run value as a catcher was negative eight he wasn’t good at blocking he wasn’t good at catching people stealing and he wouldn’t go a Frank so look he’s a backup catcher there that’s the one thing where yosman grandall actually has a slight Advantage is the fact that yasmani grandall is a better framer he was actually a pretty good framer last year and I I think I kind of like that the thing that I worry about with grandall is that he can’t catch anybody stealing everybody steals every base on him he was the worst catcher in Major League Baseball according to stat cast at controlling the running game last year so where would you fall on that if you’re looking at a backup catcher like do you say if if you’re good at framing I’m not worried about the stealing given the the rules that are written to dramatically favor base runners anyway I think I would focus more on the framing so you know if it’s a choice between the two I guess you know we we like Grand do better but I’m good with either one of those guys actually I’m actually good with either one of those guys over saying revisit the Luke meley conversation so um I I’m cool if it’s one of these 35 36 year old catchers looking to squeeze out another year but that have done something you know obviously that’s going to lead to well what about Tucker you know Tucker has demonstrated over the last several seasons that like his best days are well behind him so and you know both grandall and mccan are guys that are going to come in and hit an occasional home run and get on base a little bit they’re not going to be World beaters but you know they’re not going to be embarrassed in the Batters box either so I’m good with either one of those guys Jeff I I just wish the Reds would make a move in fact I just wish someone would confirm for me that Nick crawl is awake I texted you earlier that come on do something Jeff like yeah Jeff I need I need somebody to confirm that Nick crawl’s even at the winter meetings maybe like can somebody like show me a proof of life I feel like I feel like Nick crawl like I I have purchased uh major per you know televisions stuff like that uh it takes me forever to do that I read up on them I compare them I look at this I look at that if someone were racing me to get a specific television I feel like I might feel like nit crawl a little bit and then I’m just like man I don’t know I don’t know if I’m ready to pull the trigger oh look here here comes the Red Sox they’re going to go get that LG that I’ve been looking at all right well let’s go look at the Vio I don’t know like yeah I I think there’s something to that maybe he’s far too conservative when it comes to actually shopping around but I do believe that something he’s got he’s got some irons in the fire here he’s not sitting on his hands but I’m with you I I want to see something happen the Reds still have needs and other teams are filling their needs the reds are not and and honestly one of the craziest things I don’t know if you saw this but the the rapid fire trades that the Guardians pull off yesterday where they sent yeah Andres gimenez and Nick sandin to the Blue Jays got a couple of guys then sent those guys to the Pirates and got some pitching in Luis Ortiz some Reds fans will actually remember that name because he’s pitched for the Pirates last couple of years Luis Ortiz is no longer in the division he is now a Cleveland Guardian because of all these different trades so look Cleveland’s doing stuff and they didn’t even think they were gonna do stuff so let’s go do some stuff I just you know I can’t help but picture like Nick CW standing in front of like a big dryer race board in some hotel suite in Dallas like just biting his knuckle right one yeah like just so reluctant to make a deal just so much angst like you know if he’s not careful the whole offseason’s going to pass him by and the Reds have holes that need to be filled for sure so is he standing there calmly or is he like Charlie and and uh it’s always sunny where he’s just like yeah it’s angst he’s like biing his knuckle he’s he’s stressed man he’s stressed he’s on like his fifth pack of cigarettes of the day he’s he’s he’s working oh my gosh well hopefully that work pays off here soon but you know what it he did get somebody there there was a new addition to the Red’s roster that yeah if you can’t watch us you can listen to us on literally every podcasting app there is make sure you subscribe today on your favorite podcasting app if we’re not out there I’d be shocked quite frankly we’re literally on all of those go check us out today and thank you so much for uh joining us here because we’re literally with you every step of the way all throughout this offseason getting you set for 2025 uh all these rumors that are abounding the moves that need to be made the Reds made a move with the rule five draft they they actually selected some I did not expect them to select somebody because before we get into who Cooper Bowman is which by the way that’s a that’s a really good name that’s a good baseball name Cooper Bowman but before we get into who he is the rules on the rule five draft are this if you pick a player in the Major League portion of the rule five draft you must add them to your 26-man roster and keep them there all year and the moment that you want to remove that player from the 26-man roster you must offer him back for $50,000 to the team that you took him from so the Reds took Cooper Bowman and in rule five draf E by the way you pay $100,000 for this player from the team that you get him from Cooper Bowman comes over from the Oakland Athletics and the Reds maybe got a utility guy that if you squint really hard could be on the end of the bench like I don’t know like I I I’d love to say that there’s more to this guy than that but I don’t know he played 33 games in center field for Las Vegas last year Jeff that might be maybe this is the outfielder you’ve been looking for I it out um if you if you look at his 2024 minor league all levels combined between double A and Triple A 262 351 419 uh you know he hit 12 home runs he played infield and Outfield um I I I this is depth for spring training and I think he gets sent back to the A’s I can’t see a lane I I I can’t imagine who spot are you willing to give him on the 26-man roster yeah like if remotely think he would perform uh he’s not played at the big league level so I I just don’t know what you do with that I I’ll say this if he’s on the roster on opening days because there’s been a lot of injuries in spring training like a lot and and it’s not to like downplay his talent scouts say that he has plus plus speed but he’s got the Billy Hamilton thing where he’s real fast and can’t hit and so you can’t steal first base and so his value would be as a defensive replacement he could play second base really well he could play center field he play in the Outfield really well his value be as a defensive replacement pinch Runner later in the game and if he figures out hitting that’s good but it kind of seems like the numbers that you just said those are his minor league numbers I don’t think that that means he’s figuring things out right now like you’re hitting 262 across the minors that’s not that’s not figuring things out so this is also gonna be his age 25 season right and I’m kind of with you there I think that he’s a guy that we will see we hear his name uh in Good Year here in February in in March but I don’t believe that we will see him on the roster on the converse side of things uh the Reds didn’t lose any players during the Major League portion they lost one player during the minor league portion and this is a guy that I I know the name I can’t remember if we’ve talked about him at any length on the podcast in years past he was a middle infield Prospect Jose Torres and I remember when he was playing with Dayton he was actually pretty good he played at the same time in Dayton as Ellie De La Cruz was playing in Dayton uh but he just played in Chattanooga last year in daa Chattanooga he hit 201 in in 80 games in Double H adoga like he was down on the list of prospects don’t know that we were going to see this guy at all the Rockies picked him in the minor league phase of the draft wish him all the best if if you’re picked in the minor league portion of the rule five draft then there is no you must be on somebody’s roster for x amount of time he’s he’s just now he’s a Colorado Rocky is what it oh and as and he’s going to the Rockies he has good a shot as anybody to start on opening day so well they did I see the Rockies made a move they signed a middle infielder Tyro Estrada from the Giants um but Estrada had a really good year two years ago but not so good last year so we’ll see what that all means in Colorado I mean all you gotta do is hit the ball in the air and the Mountain’s gonna do the rest so um but all in all I I was surprised to see that the Reds made a pick at the rule five draft and I know that that is a different portion there’s going to be some people say well was Nick crawl too worried about the rule five draft I don’t think this was him I think that this was the director of scouting this was some other guys probably Brad met was a little bit more involved with this Nick crawl is worried about the big league stuff he’s worried about the big picture stuff um and look Copa Bowman’s goingon to be a nice little addition for spring training but it’s not going much further there um but yeah would you say let let’s let’s close it up with this what is the most likely move in your opinion between now and the end of the we because the rule five draft basically signals the end of the winter meetings everybody’s kind of wrapping things up getting ready to go home they’re any deals on the way out I think that if there’s anything that the Reds do before the end of this week it’s going to be signing James mccan okay that’s probably that’s probably Fair um I think they’re spending all of their time and energy right now looking at outfielder I don’t think they’re going to get a deal done for Luis Robert I think the asking price is going to be way too high and that Nick CW is ultimately going to agree with me that that’s crazy talk for what the white socks are asking for and I think they will make a move for an outfielder but it’ll be uh you know with a trade partner like uh the angels and Taylor Ward I think it’s gonna be that deal for the record I want him to agree with you and go sign Anthony santand there or agree with me and go Sant escar Hernandez that would be like the easiest route I would think I mean you wouldn’t have to add that much to the payroll you’d have to add like 10 million I think from last year and I know that there’s a lot of reporters that are saying that Circle that number from last year it’s really not going to be much different and I like if it’s 115 instead of 105 but the Reds make the playoffs they made up that difference so just go do it go give teoscar 25 million for next year or whatever it is like I I got I can’t believe it’s more than 25 million for him at this point or Anthony santand there maybe it’s 25 maybe it’s 26 and you give him an extra year oh boohoo the reds don’t have anybody in the Outfield coming up soon if you gotta give a guy six years Guess who’s coming up in six years in the Outfield nobody so all right you’re not gonna block anybody I agree I and I think that is a good spot to go ahead and wrap it up for today Jeff um for the love of God somebody if you’re in Dallas go
