welcome in Brian hul who covers the Yankees for mlb.com Brian you’ve seen the es and flows of holm’s career with the Yankees Mets fans might be confused as to why he’s potentially coming in as a starter so what are the Mets getting in Holmes I tell you what I’m a little surprised he’s going in as a starter uh obviously Carlos Mendoza knows Holmes well from his time in the Bronx and you know what they say about closers and relievers in general they’re usually failed starters so Holmes has not started a game since his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Pirates he does have a four pitch mix that could translate well to the rotation he’s a ground ball machine especially with that Sinker slider mix so uh I am curious to see how this goes the the fall back is always you can bring him into spring training build him up as a starter and if it doesn’t work out you collapse him in the bullpen and then he has some stamina there and he can go more than three outs for you so it it should work out well I believe that Holmes he hit a rough patch last year but the Yankees always thought uh his his was better than the performance than the numbers indicated that’s why they stuck with him in the closes role for so long yeah Brian speaking of the rough patch Holmes obviously lost the Yankees closer job to Luke Weaver last year but still played a crucial role in the postseason so without Holmes how would you describe the state of the Yankees Bullpen yeah for Aaron Boone it just got to a point where they had to go with a hotter hand there Holmes had uh just struggled so much I believe he had 13 blown saves led the Major League so that was really uh starting to weigh on him and he he performed much better when they moved him out of that and that the pressure was off there and he could focus more on just getting big outs in the biggest spots of the games and uh when you look at the postseason he did serve a good role there a big role there in the postseason so they have a few pieces that are missing from this Bullpen now you got Tim Hill’s a free agent Tommy keeley’s a free agent Holmes has now moved across burrow lines there so the Yankees I know we’ve talked a lot about uh what is at the top of their shopping list but they’ve got other needs to fill there Bullpen is a big part of it here in this offseason
