video description use sleepers and start winning with us today South Carolina hosts Clemson in an inate rivalry battle in Columbia on Tuesday night Riley Clemson comes into this game off of a a tough loss to Memphis they they’ve proved I think their high-end ceiling showed that the win against Kentucky South Carolina has shown its floor when they lost to North Florida in the opener uh but South comes into this on a four game win streak has double digit wins over Virginia Tech and Boston College in that stretch let’s take a look at Clemson first though because I I think this game might be more about Clemson they saw themselves you ranked inside the top 20 still ranked in the AP Top 25 but this is a team that given the way the ACC has gone is you know expected to be or now in the mix to be the second best team in that conference if you’re going to live up to that billing I think you beat a team like South Carolina so what are you hoping to see from Clemson coming off of that loss to Memphis well I I did think the Memphis the Memphis loss taught us it did teach us a lot about Memphis I mean you said this on our our episode of ball up top which maybe has aired by this point that you think this team is this Memphis team is just different mentally from like Beyond former Penny Hardaway teams at the same time I think like Clemson really just caught some bad breaks in this one like Tyrese hun Hunter hitting seven threes I know he’s had a couple of eruptions like that before in his career still not the norm I believe one of them was banked in like they were hitting some crazy circus shots uh really the the main thing that’s probably leaving Clemson fans with a bad taste in their mouth is just that awful last possession where uh Chase Hunter just let the the clock run down and and shot a contested step back three that to me is like okay you got to learn from that you don’t want to see a veteran guard like that make a mistake in that moment but the way this Clemson team plays it’s a unique style that is going to create matchup issues for a bunch of teams they play the two bigs and shefflin and locken but both of them can stretch the floor a little bit locken is shooting the highest three-point percentage of of his career he’s currently at 36% um of course shefflin has a lot he’s a skilled passer both guys are dominant on the glass believe they were the only two the only two duo in the ACC uh who played at Power conference schools last year who both had greater than like a 12% offensive rebounding rate so they’re going to control the glass on that end they have a couple really good defenders in the back court as well like Jaden Zachary is really thriving in his role there big body guard who can uh who can kind of take out the other team’s best perimeter player um and you know we make the joke that brownell’s nickname is it’s you know September October November Brownell January February March like usually they they crater when it’s like at the start of ACC play and they have a random three- game losing streak check in my calendar Ralph it’s still December so I still think Clemson is going to be playing well going into this game the Ian cheffin Colin muray boil matchup in this one I think should be a lot of fun first to bigs that are around the same size do a lot of the same stuff can do a lot of the same stuff I’m excited to see that yeah the the the chase Hunter thing at the end of the CL in Memphis game it’s in a six year it’s in a six year man we don’t we don’t even to be playing herob ball I know you were feeling yourself yeah we don’t playing B that’s not even really a growing moment since the dude can run a car like that’s just that you messed up and you need to atone for this upcoming game now he he has been great this season but I think that was kind of a reminder that like Clemson’s success both last season even when they had someone like PJ Hall and this season is based around like team play right there’s no Superstar there was no NBA Draft pick on this team we’ve seen Jane Zachary Step Up recently mentioned him filling into his role he scored at least 11 points in three of his last four games it’s three of the four games he’s had in double figures this season have been in the last four games he’s stepping into his own loan is I think has potential to be a real matchup problem as we going down the stretch here and we get into um get in ACC play with his size and against Memphis he had 23 points he showed the ability to to shoot the three it’s made multiple threes now two games in a row his ability to to drive it from that I think can be a real real problem for a team like South Carolina that doesn’t have a lot of like interior versatility let’s say you’re you’re you’re playing cmer boils and then like true bigs and locking expose some of that against Memphis who has two pretty good or at least one good defensive big and Musa ceis um I like this Clemson team a lot even after that Memphis loss how do you where would you put them naturally where do you have them ranked 20 to 25 um chance to be higher like they they I think they’re pretty clearly the second best team of the ACC right now again they they have depth even behind those two guys as well Christian Reeves is looking like a pretty solid backup big as well they got size on the wing with chony Wiggins they can throw different looks at you to where I’m sure they will have their three- game losing streak in January or February it feels like that happens every year they’re going to drop a really dumb ACC game on the road but I it just kind of feels like the pieces fit and at the and not that last year’s team didn’t I still think PJ Hall is probably the best player of like the last two Clemson front courts um but it’s just a combination of like pieces that fit well in a unique style that I think is hard to prepare for and hard to match up with I think so on the South Carolina side of things I quite frankly even as a South Carolina Alum do not know what to make of South Carolina I’ve looked at like the statistical profiles I know what I see on the court looking the statistical profiles they are eerily similar if not better in a lot of areas as last year’s team and this does not feel like last year’s team at all like if anything this this feels like one of the worst teams in the SEC the net rankings have them 35 spots behind the next lowest team in the SEC they’re dead last 99th net ratings as of Monday Night the time of this recording um I think LSU was next they were 64th or something like that I don’t think they’re that bad but the results on the court have not matched up to some of the loftier expectations they had coming into the season what do you make of of South Carolina so far this season because to me they’ve been just inconsistent yeah some of the guys who you expect to be more more consistent like aren’t really giving you much like miles study shooting below 29% on the year cam Scott I expected a lot more of like his his offensive rating is atrocious at 75 right now oh gosh it’s just a gross true shooting percentage gross two-point percentage he was someone who I just kind of thought like could slide right into the the minutes void that was left by Mei John son um and sees a role as like the go-to guy in the back court it it just feels like they don’t have much outside of Murray Bo Murray Bo I mean I think he’s answered the bell with even some of your criticisms or some of your skepticisms with him like he’s been awesome for most of this year but yeah Beyond him it’s like do you do you really just do you really just want to bank on Jamari Thomas like playing well against High major competition I mean he’s only 5’11 doesn’t really have the pedigree there um uh I yeah I just don’t think this team has the horses I don’t in order for South Carolina I think going into the air I thought they might be middle of the pack SC SEC is a lot better than I think I expected that most of us did and with with Cam Scott being as bad as he he is like you you need someone who was a onetime fivar recruit to at least play close to that ceiling to sort of reach some of the goals or build off of the momentum that last year established curay Bo I think is doing a good job of filling the um primary big role BJ Mack last year was phenomenal and I I think was it was a key piece for South Carolina obviously but the bigger thing was that you had him and Kary Bo in the front court right now you just have Kary boils Nick Pringle has been okay right but I I don’t think you’re getting the same impact from your front court and in the back cour as you mentioned take me Johnson off this this roster say what you want to about me Johnson as a player positively or negatively and you’re probably right that being said he was this team’s leading scorer and the the chemistry and balance was so I want to say perfect but like they they got everything out of last year’s group I think and so you take that away and you throw Jamari Thomas in who’s been solid you hope K Scott came in but you you you’re lacking that kind of scoring there’s a scoring void on the perimeter Kobe Wright has been who Kobe Wright is just fine role player mil study has still been the role player fine that’s who he is and he’s good at it when he’s making his threes Jamari Thomas isn’t going to come in and be like your your topend scorer on a good team I so that coupled with the fact that your front court is not as dynamic as last year’s you’re not rebounding the ball as well as last year’s MH I think just makes them more limited like some like the versatility of last year’s group helped them win in some of the margins and then turned those you know kind of iffy games into wins this year they’re not winning at those margins they’re not putting as much stress stress on opposing defenses they’re having some lapses on the defensive end and the end result has been you know this the start that has not been great the offense is outside the top 100 nationally uh defense is still okay but the the something they do offensively that scares you quite frankly other than con Murray Bo was going to his left hand I think that’s a good way to put it and you know even the the rebounding issue of it all like I just kind like despite how good Murray Bo is despite how good he is defensively I don’t think he is good enough on his own to shut down both shefflin or lock and one of those dudes is going to have themselves a game and I think if one of them gets going it just opens up the court for Chase hunter or for jadden Zachary to make those big time plays and like I just don’t really trust like anybody in this like for Chase Hunter his terrible last possession not withstanding I don’t know if there’s anyone on the South Carolina team who can really no phas him much I don’t know if there’s anyone who can phase Jaye Zachary either which is kind of alarming but they won by five last year that was a much better South Carolina team I’m looking at a little bit of the history of this rivalry here they lost last time they went to Columbia maybe that gives you a little bit of Hope and that was not a good South Carolina team but uh they did have a pro in GG Jackson though so they they could hang their hat on that I don’t know how GG played in that game do you remember that one no that team was terrible well in case you’re curious GG Jackson had 12 points Chico Carter was the Kim pom MVP of that one with 16 but I expect a different different outcome in this one I think Clemson probably oh what do I want to predict for a final score two things that were different about that game by the way it was in the first week of the season when there were students still on campus students are not on campus South Carolina right now much more rockus environment that Clemson team missed the an tournament because they also lost to Kenny Payne’s Louisville I remember that a bad Boston College team that was funny when people were still campaigning for that that Clemson team to make the tournament if you lose to guinea pay you pretty much should be disqualified they also lost to Loyal they had two sub 250 losses yes I forgot about that man South was 221 three sub 200 losses holy cow yeah this this Clemson team’s a lot better this different this is much different yeah also South Carolina I’m putting you on watch I’m putting the athletic directors everybody in the administration on watch how are you going to schedule a rivalry game when when students are home for winter break terrible terrible move on their part I think Clemson wins this like 72 to 60 though we just got a new athletic director Ray Tanner retired and they brought somebody from TCU so he’s already out you got your wish good job yeah I think I think Thomson wins by double digits quite frankly I just I don’t think South Carina has the offensive horses again I think sheff matches up really well with Colin Murray Bo and it’ll frustrate him Murray Bo’s worst games have been against the better teams that southon has played teams that have the size to match up with him and shefflin has that while being able to match some of the lateral quickness as well Kim me Clemson green by double digits I don’t think they’re gonna have to sweat this one too much I hope I’m wrong
