welcome back to another episode of rock boys football deal I think a fascinating first round matchup in the college football playoffs Davos Sweeny and the Clemson Tigers heading on the road to play Texas Longhorns team where look D I think both of these teams in the first half of their conference championships last night probably played some of the best football we’ve seen from them all season now you look at Clemson they jumped out to a 24 to7 lead Texas unfortunately a 6 to3 lead after largely dominating that first half coach Sark said it best in the uh postgame press conference look when you’re playing a team like Georgia you have to capitalize on opportunities and kind of step on the throw they just weren’t able to do that in the first half but I thought played very good football Andrew mble as well kind of another interesting storyline fired up to get into now before we do it as always let it fly in the comment section A lot of different ways you can look at this game d there’s a lot of chatter about Texas not playing a hard schedule not having impressive wins make no mistake about it you watch this team play every Saturday they’re one of the best teams in the country and they with Clemson they can be one of the best teams in the country if they decide to play like that in this football game the talent on this roster is certainly good enough fired up to get into a deal without further Ado I want to start with this Clemson offense going up against the Texas defense we say this every time we talk about Texas everybody wants to talk about Coach Sark Quinn ERS and Arch Manning this Texas Longhorns defense is dominant it’s arguably the best defense that you see across the country the number one storyline I’m looking at D can Clemson find some sort of rushing attack if there’s been something Clemson has struggled with massively down the stretch it’s run of the football finding themselves in a lot of second and third and Longs this Texas defense is not where you want to find yourself in that spot how does Clemson manufacture some sort of rushing production that’s the biggest storyline and D it’s not the to me it’s not go run the football for 250 yards it’s just run the football well enough so you can stay on schedule on offense very similar conversation we had when they played South Carolina how do you think Clemson can do that against Texas front s that’s allowing only 3.1 yards per carry top 10 in the country yeah honestly part of it’s gonna be on Kade Club because I look at the way rning are playing I don’t think Phil mafa played nearly a good enough game against SMU obviously Jay hannes goes down in that game so I think a lot of that load is ultimately going to fall Kade Club because I actually thought he was carrying the ball well I think that’s something you can do to get something going because they really didn’t just have their base run you will need to be creative because what we’ve seen from this Clemson rushing attack the last couple of weeks and Phil mafa deil there there is a chance Phil mafa gets healthy for this game Phil moffa is clearly not healthy in the back half of that season you could tell he’s banged up so that that could help Clemson but I I am totally with you you’re gonna have to involve K kumnick and Clemson has done that over the the last couple weeks and have had a lot of succcess and then you look at that you know K Club Nick on some quarterback draws a quarterback keeps versus linebacker like Anthony Hill like Texas again with mobile quarterbacks they got an absolute weapon with Anthony Hill and the range and athleticism he has kind of roam in the middle of the field playing that quarterback’s spy that’s been of the concern the best team the best way people have run the ball against Texas and really the only team that’s done it is Georgia was just kind of going right at them and kind of wearing them down a little bit I’m just looking at way Clemson’s running backs are running the ball that to me is the biggest concern is they’re just not running the ball like a Trevor etn or like a Nate Frasier were in that SEC Championship game where they were really physically just kind of grinding yeah and in Clemson’s rushing attack with some of that counter like you got to win on your down blocks if you want to pull your guards and tackles around it is hard to move guys like Alfred Collins off the line of scrimmage I mean he’s an absolute Force second storyline here Clemson Clemson being and that’s kind of where it comes down to the me deal you you look at this Texas defense there’s not many holes they’re very good in the front seven stop in the run this secondary night and day from what it was last year they’re only allowing 5.1 yards per pass attempt that’s number one in the country Clemson has gotten some explosive plays lately in the passing attack can they find some against Texas that’s the question and you you you gotta feel like what we saw from the first half with Garrett Riley in terms of the creativity and the pre-nap motion some of that misdirection you feel like you’re going to have to use Ed that against Texas as well because just running your straight offense at this Texas defense it might just not be good enough and honestly Texas again as much as they don’t give up deep passes they do give up a little bit underneath allow a relatively High completion percentage and one thing you can’t say is Cade Club Nick is playing really well he’s been sharp I think he’s shown more of an ability to methodically March their way down the field the issue was last year they weren’t explosive and Kade kumnick was missing too many easy passes he’s not really missing those passes Antonio Williams is playing at a really high level and then you got a guy in Brian Wesco who can legit beat one-on-one coverage when he gets his opportunities relatively consistently so I do feel like there’s a path at least for Clemson more so than there would have been left last year to just methodically working the ball down the field through the air because Club Nick’s playing really well yeah he’s been really good with ball placement and allowing his wide receivers to operate after the catch which might be something that Clemson look there’s two ways to hit explosive plays one it’s just pushing the ball down the field the other one is manufacturing some space getting your Playmakers the football and letting them do the rest that’s something Texas does extremely well with Coach Sark you feel like you’re gonna need to do that in this football game Brian Wesco is probably one of the biggest Keys you feel like if Clemson finds a way to win this game and keep this one wouldn’t say keep it close but give them your an opportunity on the road to win this one you’re going to need some gamechanging plays from the true freshman youngster Brian Wesco who has given you those plays over the last couple of weeks last storyline I have D this Texas pass rush is legit man 99.2% sack rate that’s top 10 in the country they can do it from all spots I think you’re look at two another true freshman and Colin Simmons coming off the edge when Clemson’s offense struggles they’re taking negative plays you go back to that pick game I believe they gave up four sacks and 15 tfls you might want to fact check me on the numbers but the numbers are pretty damn high if you’re Texas you’re trying to manufacture some negative plays and keep this Clemson offense in those second and third and long spots where they really don’t want to operate they’ll flipping the sides here this Texas offense in the first half I thought Quin that was some of the best football we’ve seen from Quin ERS you want to get back to that because you kind of lost it in the second half and I I personally think it starts with running the football they were able to get creative and run the football against Georgia decently in the first half and then work some play action and kind of open up the deeper third a little bit in the second half they couldn’t run the football that kind of caused this Texas offense to really lack that consistency biggest storyline for me heading into this one this Clemson front s that has the capability of playing some of the best football that we see in the country against a Texas offensive line that has just been Rocky you know what I mean like outside of the two Georgia games they’ve been one of the best offensive lines that you’ve seen in the country but even go back to Georgia last night you gave up six sacks 15 tfl were finding yourselves in so many second and third and long spots plus the penalties how do you see that match up playing out there and that really is the best Avenue for Clemson to be in this game and give themselves a chance to win it’s about that defensive line because I look they have two legitimate first R NFL talents TJ Parker and Peter Woods are as good a defensive lineman at their respective spots as you’ll see you got guys deont part two along and so they’re a deep they’re a good defensive line and when they’re playing well like they were in that first half against SMU I think that’s where if they could really get after this Texas team and if they don’t let them run the ball yeah you’ve seen Texas not play good offense when they’re not running the ball particularly effectively now there’s only a handful of probably front sevens in the country that can challenge Texas that way along the lines of scrimmage Clemson’s frankly won yeah that’s exactly what I was saying like Clemson I think is one of those teams that can challenge Texas and maybe even win that match up monitoring the health of Kelvin Banks like in goby he’s been awesome he’s been damn solid but like Kelvin Banks there’s a reason he’s going to go top 10 in the NFL draft the other really intriguing match up D what did what did when you caught coach SAR Texas Longhorns offensive speed and space Clemson towards the back half of the season has been rocking with the three linebackers set as their base defense times in third and Longs they’ll bring in the nickel take off the true freshman Sammy Brown they largely want to stay with those three linebackers on the field which two things one I can’t blame them because they’re two the three of the best players on this Clemson football team number two they’re all hyper ath athletic linebackers and so your question marks about their speed and space and coverage ability kind of gets mitigated if they want to stay in that three linebacker look can Texas get some of your Playmakers out in space Maybe tack that middle of the field a little bit more that that’s probably the other matchup that I’ll be looking at here because Clemson’s still a team that’s really just tough to beat oneon-one on the boundary and again Tex like in the first half they were just playing well enough to have some of those shots I thought golden was playing unbelievably well I do wonder if Victor balton’s a guy they can work more into this offense yeah stus b a syus BAL sorry but I wonder if he’s a guy like you talk about having three linebackers on the field yeah well then who’s goingon to deal with him in the middle he hasn’t been a huge part of this offense for a good chunk of this year had a huge day especially in the first half against Georgia in looked really good looked like there were some things they can do for him to really attack the middle of the field and maybe get after those line I would throw Mo into that category too and it’s like hey if you want to leave your three linebackers on the football field well go go deal with some of these slot wide receivers and then the question is can they and you know Clemson likes to play a decent amount of man covers now they went to a little bit more Zone as they’ve had the three linebacker sets but you kind of know you’re gonna get a lot of man coverage with a single high safety and some pressure looks can coach Stark dial it up scheme up some man beaters because you’re right Aven Terrell Ashton Hampton is a true freshman been playing very good for Clemson on the bound along with Jaden Lucas that’s kind of what you’re looking at and I think at the end of the day Texas when you get into the high red area or Red Zone you got to score touchdowns this is how you could maybe kind of separate in this football game you know Texas probably should have been winning that football game 17 to three at half but it was six to three because they didn’t capitalize and that was a problem at times for Texas in 20123 now they’ve been better in 2024 in the Red Zone but you kind of saw those problems kind of come to fruition when you’re playing a game like this you got to put teams away you got to score touchdowns in the red zone that kind of is a obvious analysis from your boy there D let’s get into the pick here Texas 10 and a half Point favorites against Clemson at home how are you feeling here I probably lean Texas to cover this I just think you’ve seen far too much inconsistency from this Clemson team and on the offens side of the ball unless that rushing attack looks significantly better I I mean Clemson’s not a team that I think’s built to be in third and long second and long consistently and again I like the way Cade Club Mick’s playing I do wonder if they just throw the ball a whole lot more than we’re typically expecting them to because Kade gumnick is completing more passes he’s doing a much better job of himself keeping them on schedule but man it’s really hard to play against really good teams and you can’t be multi-dimensional and the way I saw Bill mafa finish that game out the way I saw that offensive line finish that game out and without really a serviceable backup at this point with haes going down I think it’s be a really tough well at one I think it so I think Clemson keeps this one close I’m going to take Clemson with the points here now do I think they go on the road and beat Texas no I I need to see four quarters of what we saw in the first half from gett Riley in this Clemson offense because that was the best this offense has looked against the that’s a mu defense that everyone wants to treat like it’s a G5 defense it’s Ben solid defense this year they were scheming it up hitting explosive plays you said a big story line like the health of Phil mafa do we get to Phil mafa and he’s gonna get two weeks here Dale do we get to Phil Ma we saw in 2023 and to start 2024 or do we get to see the film off that’s kind of just been banged up and not himself the last couple of weeks that that is a huge question mark because Clemson needs to find some sort of Run game here give me Clemson to keep this one close on the road I feel like this is a team that’s for a lack of better terms playing with house money like you know 10 and three Clemson team probably shouldn’t be in the college football playoffs but you will in the ACC you’re playing with the little house money and this is a team that I think from a body type standpoint can hang with Clemson and there’s or hang with Texas excuse me there’s just not a lot of defenses in the front seven that can deal with the Texas offensive line Clemson’s one of them give me them to keep it close this one’s going to be a fun one too appreciate you guys rocking with it
