well look at this smiling face I don’t normally get to talk with this guy on the professional basis on the regular that’s Mitch Gallow one half of Campbell V Gallo 10 to2 on TSN 690 spending some time in the car with star but obviously out of the car Mitch good to see you brother hey good to see you man this is uh this is fun that you invited me on because we’re always like uh ships passing in the night or I guess ships passing in the morning would be the the better analogy just because you know you’re done at at 10 I jump on at 10 but we always chat in that five minutes between shows and have some good convos so maybe we could bring it here now to uh in the car with star yeah I want to get some quick reaction to the Canadians uh thumping uh the Vegas golden knights come to the Bell Center and drop a five unanswered Burger on the Canadians in the second want to get into the why and the consequences Mitch this is a consequence Zone we are here to Doo consequences for a 6-2 loss at the Bell Center you know it’s amazing uh as we transition to the National Hockey League where the Montreal Canadians uh were on the wrong side of a 6-2 score line to Vegas where Vegas dropped five unanswered in the second period um I had a pretty good feeling after after 20 I thought oh man the Canadians again now you know if I go all the way back to the Minnesota game as they wrapped up their their at the time the longest road trip of the season they got shut outed they come home goalless and I think to myself okay that wasn’t so bad it wasn’t you know you look at the score line the game was better than what the score line indicated and I thought from that point forward Mitch they had been developing a lot of really better habits and that were turning into wins and points but here we are starting a new week the Canadians are tied for the fewest points with Chicago in the National Hockey League um and they turned out to be another Get Right game for a team that was dealt a couple of losses and they score five unanswered Mitch here’s a simple question what went wrong on Saturday I mean it’s the second time this season that the Canadians have allowed five goals in a single period and for whatever reason when they lose they lose bad like they they don’t they don’t lose 322 won they lose bad and it happens a lot and I don’t know why but when things start to Trend in the wrong direction for the Canadians they can’t stop the snowball from accumulating snow down the hill they can’t stop the tidal wave from crashing down on them and that is something they’re going to have to fix and it it just feels like one goes in two goes in three goes in you look at the bench and it’s like oh what was me and then the fans get on them they start booing and then they start struggling for confidence you see Martin St Louis with those expressions behind the bench he seems at a loss for answers and they just can’t stop the bleeding when they’re cut they can’t stop the bleeding and I think that’s the the most difficult thing right now because you know they built up so much Goodwill Sean like the 5-1 over Columbus okay you you want to talk badly about Columbus they’ve won they won three or four games uh and that one loss was to Montreal and they had some pretty big wins like score-wise against Boston and Pittsburgh so it’s not like they’ve been the free spot on the bingo card the Columbus Blue Jackets and then Edmonton one of the most dynamic offenses in the league they beat them three nothing so they built up Goodwill and then Midway through the second period all that is forgotten right away from all the fans from everybody covering the team it’s all right they’ve uh they’ve reverted back to the Montreal Canadians that we saw you know give up the the seven goals to Seattle last time they had a two- game win streak this is exactly what happened they they the last time they won two games in a row they followed up 7 to2 against Seattle at the Bell Center and then they gave up six to Washington a couple nights later and lost two in a row it’s like when they get on a bit of a role they become fat cats or they they they become comfortable uh with the way that they’ve played and then and then they feel too good about themselves so walk me through walk me through the whole Martin St Louis angle here because you know I for the record I’m an MSL guy I I think he’s the right coach I think he’s the right coach at the right time I really do and like a game like last night you know what my takeaways from Saturday night 62 loss was this is the coach learning just as much as as Lane Hudson is for an ill-advised pinch and Ill advised I’m gonna try to keep it in sustained pressure in the zone and he gets burned and again another common theme is odd man Rush goes the other way because of you know you’re learning to play your position you’re learning to play at a high rate of speed maybe your brain hasn’t caught up to your body yet and I I and maybe I I’m giving him too much credit because there has been some backlash I saw on one of your three thoughts one of your three takeaways that you post a social after every Canadians game was Martin St Louie not calling a timeout when I think everybody in their sister was crying for a for a timeout you know turn turnovers go and get scored on S monteo you can’t stop any momentum the five unanswered goals were more or less in very quick succession and even though I you know I can jump into your brain here for a second you’re an MSL guy I’m an MSL guy some of that on him for not being in control when the moment was getting away from them and nobody in the ice could take it over and I look to the coach in a moment like that to settle things down to call a timeout and and I’m not so much looking to chew guys out I mean they know they see the score they see the game unraveling and they and they see them losing it from their gra from their grip but some of that Mitch is on is on is on the coach isn’t it 100% 100% And I’m a Believer in Martin s Louie but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to be fair I’m I’m not going to be a fanboy and I’m not going to just gloss over mistakes that I think the coach might be making uh I I mentioned the possibility of a timeout you know that’s one way you have to find some type of spark some type of way to to change the momentum that was clearly going in Vegas’s favor in that second period so maybe it’s a timeout Sean you also have three TV timeouts per period a TV timeout is a chance to bring the guys to the bench and maybe bark out some orders or just show a little fire show them that you’re not happy with what’s happened at three nothing even though it’s not his fault maybe a goal tending change is going to wake up the bench you know maybe sending Arbor Jacky out there to to try to engage in some type of physicality can change the momentum I also I look at the the fourth line of the Canadians take a look at the fourth lines around the hocky National Hockey League most of them have a clear identity and they can be an energy type of line that you throw out immediately after a goal is scored monreal’s fourth line in last night’s game and it’s it’s it’s no disrespect to these players because I like them all kada armia and heinan those guys you’re not throwing them out after a goal to try to get you energy right compared to a lot of the lines we see throughout the league so I just I I and where’s Michael pizetta because you can build a type of fourth line identity line with a guy like that in my opinion so you know I I do think a lot of it uh rests on the coach because this is a young team and they are going to go by the way of the coach and he seems a little bit shell shocked at times behind the bench which leads I think to the team being Shell Shocked behind the bench and you know wasn’t it something with with all that chatter about Martin St louz of late wasn’t it something waking up to the news of Jim Montgomery signing a five-year contract with the St Louis Blues despite the fact that Drew Bannister has only been the head coach of that team not even interim head coach of that team for two months yeah what I mean that to me is the ultimate compliment to a guy who has just put out the front door by an organization and before the ink is dry on the goodbye papers that you send to HR St Louis has decided to fire their coach and bring this guy in who by the way is a bilingual montrealer not that I you know no one’s advocating for Martin St Louis at least not between the two of us for him to lose his job but you know timing is everything and the blues credit to that organization they didn’t wait uh they they pounced so the Montreal Canadians have an interesting week coming up Tuesday Wednesday Saturday uh they’re gonna play one home game they host Utah and then they hit the road you know you brought up Columbus earlier you don’t think the BJs are waiting for them on Wednesday Wednesday night um for a little bit of a revenga Style game and then they can need play a Saturday Sunday afternoon which is bothersome in my opinion
