David EK is reportedly available from the Columbus Blue Jacket should the Sharks pull the trigger on the former six overall pick you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part every day if you want to be in everyday all you have to do is just follow along wherever you get Podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well and today we’re going to be doing the Deep dive on David Ur uh we’re going to talk about kind of his past his draft capital like get to know the player himself look at I watched some of his most recent games look at what the tape said and then try to decide if these sharks should try to pull the trigger on a David urri trade and what that would actually look like so before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel uh you get to start season with a big return on FanDuel new customers can place a $5 bet you will get started $150 in bonus bets if if you win your first $5 bet visit fanduel.com to get started all right uh David your Che is reportedly available from the Columbus Blue Jackets there’s been a bit of an issue with your che where he feels like he is NHL ready we should be playing NHL games the Columbus Blue Jackets are like nah bro uh and they have uh been putting him in the Press Box actually just recently sent him down to the AHL to play with the monsters all right if you don’t know who David Ur is uh he’s a 6 foot4 uh 204 pound right-handed defenseman from czechia uh was the sixth overall pick in the 2022 draft so like two years ago um that was like the Phil Beast said draft for the Sharks fans um Eur is a very intriguing Prospect because of he’s only 20 he turns 21 at the end of the week here like he is just scratching the surface on kind of his potential and and stuff and um there seems to be some sort of miscommunication between Columbus and himself on kind of the plan and what to expect and it just it seems like then you also have to remember columus has a new general manager who’s in um position who wasn’t here when he got drafted so it’s it’s been very widely reported that David Ur is available and Columbus is looking to kind of do right by the player uh and get something of return which we’ll dig into a little bit more but let’s continue look at your Che so um this season has been a horrible season for Y at least when it comes to like games played and stuff he’s played a whopping games this year in the NHL and he’s played one game in the AHL uh this season he’s only averaging 11 minutes and 12 seconds of time on Ice um and he has five shots on goal in in six games so we’re going to look at his stats from last year where he played has a little bit bigger sample size um to to kind of draw from so year last season played 43 games in the NHL he had one goal nine assists with 38 shots on goal averaged 1436 of time Ice uh 47.68 per cory4 45% goals for uh for year check if you go back to his draft profile um Elite prospects actually had him ranked number two and the second ranked player in that draft um they had him like the fifth highest ceiling for um the second highest floor like very they feel like he was a very safe kind of defenseman uh they’re kind of the write up they wrote was the creativity with the puck and the shot are both really high I don’t know if he defends well enough to be a top pairing defenseman but he’s still the best defenseman in the class that was from an Eastern Conference executive um kind of some of the other notes from your check in and his draft profile is um the endorsement this is uh from Elite prospects endorsement of course Mars something of it uh sorry David J fin say years is the highest rated defenseman for elite prospects after a year-long DI dog fight with Simon nimit for the distinction uh the book on eoch is a Tome at this stage he’s already played two full seasons professional hockey and chick um and he’s a wealth of international experience that would be the Envy of most 10year NHL veterans we’re talking about close to 10 separate appearances in this country’s colors the last two seasons including a pair of trips to well Juniors for the Czech blue line at the world hockey championship for the most part gear Che handled each assignment admirably his creativity at the offensive Blue Line coupled with a constant drive to push the boundaries of a skill set uh made him the draft’s most compelling offensive defenseman uh they kind of go on saying he plays a tight Gap through the neutral zone deploys sound footwork defending on the blue line uh contains exceptional well in body onbody defensive scenarios few players in this draft can match your Che as a play stopper they also talk about his frame etc etc um so like David EK like he’s been you know like he is a very highly touted Prospect like this isn’t just some scrub dude let like once out there’s a very highly touted Prospect who you know was Elite Prospect had number two end up going number six in the draft class still rankings private rankings you know NHL rankings and um public rankings there’s always going to be some different there but still like you’re talking about a guy who was sixth overall in in his draft class um looking at Byron Bader in his kind of projection for him um he’s a 52 percentile star player as of right now star player for defenseman is a 045 points per game kind of career average and 71 percentile NHL or which means he’s going to play 200 NHL games so um that’s kind of what he was at after the two 2024 season um looking at his stats last year where he played his evolving hockey card and only played 43 games kind of and he was between that second and third pairing minutes um every night um ninth percentile player six percentile offensively 32 percentile defensively like didn’t get any power play time very little short-handed like special teams time there um not it’s not much to take from it especially again for a guy who played 43 NHL games there as a young player um and Columbus was like the Sharks very bad and we’ll have a bigger kind of conversation about Columbus and the way they’re handling it here in a minute but just in interesting that a player of this kind of ilk isn’t getting power play opportunities um your if you look at kind of from all three zones what he excels what he doesn’t uh excel at last year excellent at defensive Zone retrievable like going getting the puck out of his Zone and getting the puck moving um in zone entries he wasn’t asked to do it very often but when he did he was actually really good at it um also pretty solid at defending like we heard in the um uh from his Scouting Report very good at actually like keeping the puck stopping the Zone entries um offense wasn’t kind of maybe where You’ expect but that’s again you’re talking about a 19 20 year old player uh last season in a kind of 40 game sample size with with the blue Jack it’s a team that also like the Sharks was very bad um finally his usage chart so um not too bad last year like his you know he definitely had more offensive zone deployments Maybe a little bit also against kind of lesser competition but decent competition um and did pretty well with it as well like nothing that to sneez at there um for David EK so is a player who’s has shown some flashes and some signs um but has some stuff to work on so we’re going to talk about that next um as we kind of dig into the tape what your Tech needs to work on what the Blue Jackets and or his next team would need to work on um and then we’ll also kind of talk about the logistics of a trade here uh in just one [Music] second get ready to tackle the NFL action with FanDuel America’s number one sports book because right now new customers can bet $5 and fantasy hockey team needs some help they got you covered who to Target on the waiver wire who to trade away who to drop all that good stuff they got you covered there or check out any of the great shows here in the Bay Area locked on niners locked on Warriors locked on A’s locked on Giants plenty of great stuff here at the lockon network we cover your team every day all right David Ur what does the tape say so I watched his last game against the Bruins his last NHL game and I watched his only AHL performance this year and my biggest takeaway is he looks like a guy who needs to play some hockey um he’s played seven games this season right we are 20 about quarter of the Season through he’s basically played a third of his SE team’s games this year for a 20-year-old going to be 21 year old um that’s my first biggest thing is he just looks like a guy who needs to just play more hockey right now um other than that the first thing you notice on him is his size like he is he is a big dude he’s got big shoulders like you notice every time he’s out on the ice you notice him right away because he’s just bigger and he’s bigger than everybody like it feels like he’s much bigger than everybody else even if he isn’t he just feels like it I think it’s because of his shoulders he’s got massive shoulders like the dude is huge um we’ll start with some of the positives like for a guy as big as he is and again like he looks like a refrigerator out there he moves really well not like Ma celebrini you know gliding through the neutral zone well but like he moves really well for and it almost kind of reminds me of Brent Burns where he’s just because he’s so big and a stride so big he can cover ground super quickly um you know there was a two-on-one in the Bruins game it was a kind of really quick two-on-one type of thing that happened and his ability to get from one dot to the other like one face off dot to the other while skating backwards it’s there’s a reason why GMS love big like big defenseman like that who can move is because it’s just it’s hard to do something like that right um luuka Canon who I love like Luca Canon is not getting from this side of the ice to that side of ice in one stride like uh you know like David yek it’s just different dude so um you can see also his like you see the puck handling and his ability to start the transition game um wasn’t asked to do it a lot but when he did you can see that you saw more of it in the AHL when he’s playing with the Cleveland monsters I watched their game against one of the most recent games against the Admirals uh I think it was might have been from over the weekend but Admirals very good team like I’m very interested to see how this how these two teams played and um gear like he’s kind of the same thing where he can cover a lot of ground he’s very big like he’s very good at covering the ground in front of the net he’s hard to move of course right um especially when you’re literally a refrigerator like you just park him in front of the goalie and forwards are not going to be able to move him he’s just he’s too big he’s too strong and again he’s only 20 like he’s only gonna get bigger stronger faster um offensively there’s a lot that could be there but he’s just not given an opportunity right now and I don’t know if he’s not in a position where again like you look at the Blue Jackets where they have more offensively gifted defenseman you think of we got like wensky you know like he’s going to get kind of all that play Power even on colum on the I’m sorry on Cleveland um there there’s kind of other guys who are in front of him on the pecking order kind of reminds me a little bit of Shakir Mulan on the Barracuda where like luuka kenon he’s going to get kind of the offense like he’s going to get the offense because that’s just what he does and already luk Ken and he’s estblished himself as a great offensive defenseman in the AHL um and like he’s getting first run power play and Canon’s kind of getting second it’s the same type of or Muk Doan’s getting second kind of the same thing with with EUR right now where he’s just getting kind of second minutes kind of the The Leftovers of it not to say if he the Sharks were to acire him he wouldn’t be in the same type of situation where he’s going to be getting that um but things he definitely needs to work on is um for a guy his size he doesn’t physically engage as much as you would like like he does a really good job you know with his pinches and sometimes he’s a little aggressive with his pinches um offensively but defensively um I think he tries to play the stick a little bit too much and instead of again you’re 6 fo3 205 pounds at 20 years old like you can you’re bigger than a lot of NHL players already and I think that’s something he really needs to work on and I think that’s why him he just needs to play games right now I think that’s his biggest thing is he just needs to play games whether it’s in the NHL or in the AHL he just needs to play and not just play like 10 minutes a night that what the Blue Jackets were doing to him right now that I think is that is an area where I think you can work with him with that and that’s just kind of again kind of maybe pulling it out trying to be a little bit more physical you know I think especially along the boards um and you know some of the transition stuff he’s really good defensively transition so maybe I’m I it could have just been what I was watching but wanted a little bit more physically out of him and I think his offensive game like I was mentioning it’s just there’s you can see flashes of it you can see why he’d be really really good but he’s just not getting an opportunity with it uh one because he’s not playing enough and two there’s just some other guy ahead of him so um and I think a lot of this also has to kind of do with the relationship between player and the team right you look at a player like this and you wonder if there’s where raw skill like you can tell there’s just he’s oozing raw skill and like you’re not drafted sixth over raw if you’re not a talented skilled player and you wonder if they’s just not a concrete plan with like this is what we’re going to do like look at the Sharks and Will Smith right Will Smith 19-year-old player little bit smaller you know kind of compared to some other players but the sharks have laid out a plan and we can argue if it’s a the correct plan or not but they have a plan right well Smith this is what we’re going to do first half of the Season you’re not going to play back Tob backs we’re going to pick kind of games here and there de developmental games you know you’re GNA play you know 14 15 minutes a night but we’re going to get you on the power play we’re going to try as you earn more opportunities we’re going to get you in key moments whether we’re down by a goal um trying to kind of come back like we we we’re going to utilize you we’re g to put you in um in three on like in overtime like we got a plan for you to help you be better in the long run and not grind you out it doesn’t seem like Columbus has a plan right now with him where it’s again like if you you’re going to be in the NHL like against the Bruins like I watched that game he played 10 shifts and he played 814 it was great to watch it because I watched the game in you know 15 minutes it took me more time to kind of scroll to the and find his next shift than it did actually finding his shifts because he’s played 10 shifts and he played eight 10 and he had some mistakes as a young player is going to have right he had a like in the first period a really bad turnover um that you know he probably wants but he also had some flashes of like oh that was a really nice transition where he gets the puck out of the Zone gets it going makes a really great pass from his Zone basically to the like a really nice stretch pass that gets the offens going like you see those flashes but the poor kid right now is playing like he knows this might actually be my last shift like you know we talk about mmel bini plays every shift like it’s his last shift um and we love that about him po David y plays every shift like it’s his last shift because it might literally be his last shift of the night and you have that again completely different players but you almost have that Ryan Merkley feel where as soon as he makes a mistake done you’re done for the night open the door type of thing Merkley ton of issues attitude etc etc um from all accounts your Che seems like a really nice guy great in the locker room um but I’m curious if if the the lack of plan for his development is maybe why we are here and that happens when you go through new GMS and you go through a lot of changes that the Blue Jackets have gone through recently if there just might be a lack of a plan so um let’s look at what a potential trade my guesstimate of what a trade might look like uh and if I think the shark should do it or not so we’ll get to that here in just one second priz pick is the best place to get real money Sports Action with over 10 million members and billions of dollars missed it Saturday night I did a special Joe thoron uh talked about the game on there on Saturday night talked about Joe Thorton and the retirement ceremony if you missed it it’s in your feed I did a really fun that was episode 1,00 for me 1,200 of these uh I’m still terrible at this joking kind of a little bit anyway um so should the Sharks do it what do a trade look like let’s talk about what a trade actually looks like um you have a disgruntled player Young player who’s on his ELC he’s got this year and next year left on his ELC a scrunt young player where management and him aren’t on the same page still a high pick and he wants out where have I heard of this before oh yeah the cter gooi trade a little bit different as cutter gooi had not played yet for um Philly but top five pick not happy with his what his situation was going to be go had a little bit more leverage as he had not signed his ELC um and he could basically just say well I’m not gonna sign and I’ll be more than happy to play college a little bit different but we’re gonna kind of use that as a parameter and that was cutter goer for a second in cam York and was it cam no Jimmy Dell sorry my bad um wrong young defenseman Blue Jackets are reportedly looking for a young player in return and I think this comes to down to what are you willing to give up and I think the second round pick is probably probably a good starting point for the Sharks and um I know may there’s probably fans right now as I’m saying you’re going to give up a second round pick the sharks are going to like don’t worry about picks the sharks can manufacture picks if you want to trade McKenzie Blackwood if you want to trade Mel granin uh if you want to try like you can manufacture draft picks um like I I’m not worried about that and at some point like you have to start getting your dudes and going and the sharks are getting to that point where you need to start kind of getting your your dudes and going here um and a guy like David EK really fits the shark’s timeline too right um right in the like he’s he’ll be 21 so you know he fits in the same timeline with with uh mlin s brini with Will Smith will mecklin like he’s an the exact same age ranges those guys um he’s right really really fits in I think if you’re these sharks you’re probably looking at a second round pick Plus a prospect to be honest and whether it’s I mean you’re they’re probably gonna ask for somebody like Quinton musty the sharks are probably going to say no um but whether it’s somebody from the 2020 draft class who is very much ready to make their NHL you know be a full-time NHL player whether it’s like a Daniel gusan or bordalo um or maybe it’s like a someone from the same draft class I got Phil Beast dead but then you’re really you know the Sharks kind of priding themselves on the center depth potential with celebrini Will Smith um and bastad but the Sharks also know they’re going to be picking on top five again this year so if you want another Ford you get another Ford or maybe a guy like Casper hton in who’s maybe a couple years away but has really high-end potential and you you kind of see his role with a team so that’s what you’re probably looking at is a second round pick plus a a minus B plus Prospect and if you’re the Sharks you’re getting a defenseman who fits your timeline um fits has does have some Growing Pains but would be like right there kind of where you expect him to be I think if the drks do this they need to like kind of like as my career is done with a lot of the guys is you sit down and you say this is gonna be the plan like trust me this is what we’re going to do with you whether and we’re gonna have you stting the AHL you’re going to play a ton of minutes in the AHL right now you’re going to play in a bunch of situations because this is what we think is the best for you but hang in there right now because if you look at the right side of our defense most of these guys are going to be gone in two years and you’re going to have an opportunity to win playing time very quickly so if I’m the Sharks it depends on who I have to give like I’m not giving up I would be really hard pressed to give up Quint musty because I think musty is a special player I wouldn’t do bed because I again you’re really focusing what you know this the potential strength of this team down the middle and that’s where you need to build it’s down the middle if you have celebrating Smith Beast set down the middle that is a potentially pretty awesome one two three the 2020 class is kind of getting to that point where they need to kind of do something or get off the pot so maybe I might have to send a couple of those guys but I would be really interested in acquiring a guy like David Ur because I think there’s a lot of untapped potential there and I think if whoever gets him has a like legitimate plan of like this is what we’re going to do like and he he has to agree to it um and he has to buy into it that’s the big thing is buying into it but he looks like a guy who needs a change of scenery and needs an actual plan of this is what we’re going to do and trust us come play like we we got a plan for you um I would be really in interested in guy like David y because I think again there’s a lot of talent there that is untapped right now and this could be one of this could be your next Brett Burns type of trade where you kind of maybe buying low on a guy who’s hasn’t quite figured it out and if he turns everything on you’re looking at an excellent defenseman and if you have your check at Sam Dickenson like and then canot and Muk Mullan like your your check would be a really great piece to add to what the sharks are building right now you would have to give up something for it but I think he could be a real like I think he could be a dude still so um that’s gonna be it for me today be back tomorrow we’ll talk about the Sharks Kings game um so I’ll get that covered on your next episode of lock on sharks wherever you get Podcast of course you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter and blue sky at my fry hole till tomorrow bye friends [Music]
