players will return tonight uh might see one or multiple return tomorrow certainly in the next week um how many of these players are locks to play every single night when they return DOI petti McMahon camp mccave we know mca’s playing and I think we know doy’s playing but patr McMahon Camp are they locks when they’re healthy they definitely play I think everyone probably is like I’m just looking at their lineup tonight like who would come out um so grankin would come out um mitton is like a question mark right now obviously he’s in the mix Reeves might come out uh Robertson might come out like yeah like he he hasn’t been able to score and isn’t getting that much ice time like I I think Camp is the interesting one in theory because you look at like Connor der has kind of just filled that void a little bit but I I can’t see him sitting when he comes back but like he’s not close to returning like he’s not skating with them they don’t really give us timeline so we don’t know exact how long he’s going to be out but their fourth line their bottom two lines like they’re going to need to find a way to build like a little bit more offense throughout their lineup so you look at DOI you look at Minton I don’t know like I I I’m curious what they’ll do when DOI comes back do they keep DOI on the wing do they put him back at Center do they keep Mitten around like Hayes you and I were talking about it earlier in the week like I think they should just keep this going with Mitten as long as they can just keep giving him games keep getting him more experience like I think he’s played better than I would have expected like he looks comfortable like he doesn’t look overwhelmed uh he’s brought them some offense which I certainly wasn’t expecting um but I think most of those guys when they get back and they’re healthy they’ll have a spot petti like was playing really well before he got hurt like he had found they had found something with patet tver neander and you look at who’s playing with those guys right now it’s pontis Holberg like he’s he’s another guy we didn’t actually mention I don’t like Craig baru seems to love him I don’t I haven’t loved his season I think he’s played too much um but he’s earned the trust of the coach so we’ll see yeah I mean what do you make on the back end like Yanni Haw and Pa all of a sudden on the the Finish team and and I just I I love how like barui goes yeah had a procedure it’s like I just that kind of it’s like a throw comment it’s like what like had a procedure like is there where do you see Yanni Haw and Pa Hayes you can weigh on this too like do you see him playing meaningful games down the stretch or into the playoffs or is he more of an insurance policy if you know player X or player y on your you know fifth and sixth is is not available Hayes uh I don’t think he’s GNA I don’t think he’ll be playing I don’t I just I think it’s been too long I think the idea of hawen paaw makes a lot of sense because of his size his penalty killing abilities but they’ve been killing penalties pretty well and and I don’t think they have a size issue necessarily with tan of here and emman Larson here McKay plays with Edge um you know Riley wouldn’t classify as a monster but he’s heavy you know uh I don’t I don’t think that’s something they’re lacking and I don’t think of him as a as a big guy that’s mean necessarily I think he can be a little bit but not like over the top so I don’t know I I think it’s a bonus if he’s even your seventh you know that that would be how I would classify right now it’s not long-term commitment it’s not a lot of money if you can get up to speed and be around and be a guy who’s an injury replacement veteran type that makes sense to me Jonas see I actually surprisingly disagree like we never we never disagree but I disagree with you I actually think I actually think they really need him because if you look at the way that their defense is structured right now with how well mccab and tanov have played together that forces them into a little bit of a bind with the rest of their groups and suddenly they have to play Riley and Ean Larson together and they have to play emman Larson on his offside and it’s not been great and I don’t think it’s an ideal situation this why you go back to the summer and we were talking like they need two right shots and they end up bringing into tanv and hacken paaw and if hacken paaw can’t play suddenly like that’s your your second pair Riley emman Larson and I don’t think that that that’s ideal like ideally I think if you could play Riley with hawen paaw and you could play I don’t know emman Larson on his left side with somebody I think that’s a little cleaner and so I kind of think he’s important obviously like they’ve been really happy with how Conor Tims has played we’ll see how that progresses like he was looking like he was actually gonna come out of the lineup earlier this week had Jake McCade been healthy so I’m just flagging it like I I kind of think they could use another right shot to play in their quote unquote top four whatever the top four is because putting emman Larson and Riley together doesn’t feel ideal to me I hear you it’s just a matter not yak uh haaka could do it you know that that’s where I’m at I just I don’t have faith that he’s going to get back up to speed I mean something’s seriously wrong with this guy’s knee like he you know the whole contract back and forth he doesn’t play plays two games now has a procedure like I I just don’t know if you can trust him anymore he’s on team Finland but he’s on team Finland somehow uh with jonasigo of the athletic Matthews with Marner tonight I don’t think that’s a surprise considering the way they broke camp and then what we saw the other night in the third period you think this one runs its course in the next week two weeks do you think we see it for the majority of the Season uh how would you kind of project the Matthews and Marner partnership going forward I don’t know like it feels like every coach now I mean it’s only been two coaches really uh Keith and and buub just always seems to want to go back to it like it’s always like when they’re split it’s always like well when are they going to go back to it so I kind of think that eventually this is kind of the way that they’ll go unless I mean that’s the thing like projecting it is is hard because if one group goes cold he’s going to switch it and I just I just liked how Marner looked with Taris and I think they found something interesting there that I don’t think like those two haven’t always clicked together and I think during this recent stretch they were clicking defensively it was really good they were going up against top lines I think Marner was playing really well I I like the look of of Neer and Matthews together so I think we’ll eventually see it flip again and we’ll flip again and we’ll flip again but it it does always feel like the coach’s instinct is to get Matthews and Marner back together and yet like if you go back to the playoffs last year they didn’t really play together they were on separate lines so I don’t know like I I I don’t know what combination you guys prefer but I kind of liked how it was looking before and yet I also get the like the decision to move it back just because of how their chemistry looked the other night and how it looks every time they get together I don’t know like I I just think it world class playmaker world class goal scorer like it just kind of makes sense on it does here here’s my thing though with with Marner I think because of Marner is a a very unselfish player it made sense to play him with Tavaris early on you know they see it come off his jersey he’s trying to establish his game like I I think marner’s a very I don’t know right word forgiving player he he makes he makes players around him really good giv gives them good looks so you knew what Matthews you know what neander are tarus is the guy that I circle come into the season go if this guy has a huge drop off the Leafs could be in big trouble here it’s been the but Marner playing with him you know tarus looks like he’s had I don’t want to say Resurgence because he’s been very consistent but tavarus hasn’t had this big drop off so I think Marner is a big part of that not that nander doesn’t drive that line it’s just neander is not a a pass first type of player cuz he’s a shooter as well where Marner would you know would have no problem he had a break with the other day he tried to throw it back to n half you know 8T away like that’s I just think Marner has helped John tarz settle into his season and and you know that’s probably seductive too is to to keep him going around going along you throw Marner with him so that he can continues that production he puts it on a tee for you like McDavid and Heyman last night he’ll give you those chances to feel good about your game yeah and yeah maybe it’s flipped Jonas to an extent because Matthews has had the more kind of tumultuous season with injuries and shooting percentage not going his way you know I wouldn’t be shocked if if they’re looking at Matthews saying let’s get him cooking again because you need him and he’s looked really good so far this week albe it against poor competition but still three goals in two games and I don’t expect him to slow down presuming he stays healthy yeah and that’s like the one asterisk with the whole whole thing it’s like is is this done like is is whatever was going on before over and is it or is it going to be like that 2122 season where he just plays but he’s like you can tell like something’s like a little off and like he still scores and like like his down year that was a down year for him he had 40 goals and I think he had like 85 points but it was like it was noticeable he wasn’t like he was last year where it’s like every time he gets on the ice stri he’s going to score and every time he gets a good look it’s like he that’s going in and it didn’t feel like that that season and it didn’t feel like that at the start of this season and you just wonder like does he get back to what he was last year can he get to that level again like that that game the other night was a step in the right direction he still doesn’t look totally at that level really all that close uh and he did miss a lot of time so it makes a lot of sense but you just wonder does he get back to the level that he was at last year where he was scored like 69 goals like it was like you think about it now like 69 goals like he’s on Pace right now I think for like 36 something like that um so I just wonder if he can get back to that level yeah I mean I’m not going to bet against him but the it’s the injuries that would do that clearly you know he’s got 57 games left if he’s back at his level last year the guy’s going to score 50 plus you know like that’s that’s what he’s going to do but if if if he’s injured if he’s not feeling 100% then it becomes more of a conversation okay fill out your game and be ready for the playoffs cuz come playoff time there cannot be some excuse that something’s been lingering all year you can’t waste your opportunity um leaves capitals tonight leaves in Pittsburgh tomorrow all right Jonas enjoy yourself this weekend I’m sure we’ll see you again soon thank you for doing this later guys there’s Jonas seagull of the athletic mail in Friday’s brought to you by Boston Pizza’s new game Day menu stopped by your local BP for $7 touchdown Pints sharables for the whole crew and weekly prizing up for grabs football game days are better at your local BP we’ll come back with our Best Bets wrap up a busy week and look ahead to a busy weekend as well overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on TSN 2 the Toronto Maple Leafs may be taking a new approach to salary management which could directly impact Mitch marner’s contract negotiations during Kyle du’s tenure as general manager the team didn’t hesitate to spend heavily and this trend began with a 6-year extension signed by Marner in 2019 at the time marner’s $10.9 million annual cap hit set the market for Superstar Wingers surpassing comparable players like Miko Ronan of the Colorado Avalanche who signed a six-year deal with a 9.25 million annual cap hit now however times seem to be changing tsn’s Pierre LeBron recently reported that the Maple Leafs have implemented an internal salary cap aiming to ensure no player earns more than Captain Austin Matthews who signed a 4-year extension worth 13.25 million per season in August 2023 the team’s primary concern revolves around marner’s age agent Darren Ferris who according to LeBron might push for a percentage of the total salary cap instead of a fixed dollar amount this could result in marner’s cap hit exceeding Matthew’s $1 13.25 million conflicting with aaf’s new Financial strategy Ferris is known for driving negotiations to the Limit often taking his clients to free agency this raises fears that discussions between Marner and the Leafs could drag on until July 1st giving Marner and his Camp all the leverage in negotiations another complicating factor is the rising Market LeBron noted that moiko renin believes he could secure $14 million per season as a free agent this Sparks the question could Marner demand even more and would Ferris take that gamble knowing the Leafs might opt to move on and sign another player Marner has made it clear on multiple occasions that Toronto is where he wants to be as a local player with deep ties to the city he’s expressed his desire to spend his entire career wearing the blue and white of the leaes however staying with the team may require him to accept less than market value especially if the front office remains committed to its new salary structure such a sacrifice could be vital for the team’s Collective success and to avoid Financial issues that have plagued the recent past while negotiations are still in the early stages it’s evident that marner’s future with the Leafs is at stake Maple Leaf’s fans may need to prepare for the possibility of significant changes but they can also trust in the players commitment to the city and the franchise to find a compromise the Maple Leaf’s decision to implement an internal salary cap reflects a broader shift in their team building philosophy after years of prioritizing topend Talent with Hefty contracts the organization appears determined to strike a balance between Superstar contracts and depth throughout the roster this strategy aims to avoid the pitfalls of past Seasons where a lack of financial flexibility often left the team vulnerable in critical playoff moments for Mitch Marner this shift creates a unique Challenge on one hand his value to the Leafs is undeniable a consistent top scorer and Elite playmaker Marner has been instrumental in D ding the team’s offense on the other hand his ability to command a salary that rivals or exceeds Austin Matthews could put the Leafs in a difficult position especially with a potential need to strengthen other areas of the roster as the 2023 to 24 season progresses the Leafs must weigh the potential consequences of sticking to their cap philosophy losing a homegrown Talent like Marner would undoubtedly sting for fans and the organization alike however allowing one player to dictate financial terms beyond the team’s structure could hinder long-term success and force painful sacrifices elsewhere adding to the complexity is the looming free agency of William nander if the Leafs are to stick to their internal salary cap they may also face challenges in retaining neander who could command a significant raise balancing contracts for both Marner and nander within the new framework could prove to be the ultimate test for Toronto’s management team another Factor at play is the team’s ultimate goal winning the Stanley Cup while star players like Marner and Matthews are crucial history has shown that depth and balanced Ro rers often Prevail in the postseason if the Leafs fail to manage their finances effectively they risk falling short of building a championship caliber team even with Elite Talent for Marner the decision to stay with the Leafs might come down to more than just dollars his connection to the city the fans and his teammates could be deciding factors if he prioritizes Legacy and loyalty over maximizing earnings there’s a strong possibility that he’ll work with a team to find a deal that benefits both parties negotiations will also test Darren Ferris known for his Hardline tactics in securing lucrative deals for his clients while pushing for top dollar is expected Ferris may need to weigh the risks of alienating the Leaf’s management and fan base a prolonged stalemate could damage marner’s relationship with the team and its supporters the Leaf’s management led by general manager Brad tring faces a pivotal moment TR living’s reputation as a negotiator and team Builder will be on full display as he navigates this high-stake scenario striking the right balance could solidify his tenure in Toronto while a misstep might set the team back for years for Maple Leafs fans the coming months will be filled with anticipation and uncertainty marner’s future along with the team’s ability to stay competitive under Financial constraints will likely dominate conversations as the season unfolds supporters can only hope that the team’s new approach leads to Greater playoff success and ultimately The elusive championship in the end the outcome of these negotiations could redefine the Maple Leaf’s identity for years to come whether it results in retaining Marner or reshaping the roster the team’s commitment to an internal salary cap signals a clear focus on long-term sustainability fans will be watching closely hoping for a resolution that keeps the team’s core intact and their Championship dreams alive as the negotiations with Mitch Marner progress another layer of complexity is added by the external competition in the NHL Market teams with more cap space and fewer restrictions could easily present lucrative offers to Marner if he reaches free agency the Leafs are not only negotiating with Marner but also indirect directly competing with other franchises willing to outbid them for his Services one example of this is Miko Ronin whose potential $14 million value on the open market highlights the growing demand for elite Wingers if Ronin secures such a deal it could set a precedent that marner’s camp would use as leverage the Leafs however must remain disciplined as breaking their internal salary cap for Marner could lead to similar demands from other key players down the line the looming Spectre of free agency means the Leafs have a limited window to strike a deal if negotiations drag on into the off season The Leverage shifts heavily in favor of Marner and his agent Darren Ferris known for his strategic patients could use this to push for maximum value putting even greater pressure on the Leaf’s management to make a decision this scenario also places significant pressure on head coach Sheldon Keefe managing a team amid ongoing contract uncertainty can disrupt chemistry and focus Keef will need to ensure that the team remains United and focused on their performance even as the media and fans speculate about Marner future meanwhile the Leaf’s Core Group including Austin Matthews Morgan reallyy and John tarez will likely play a role in influencing marner’s decision the camaraderie among the players and their Collective drive for a championship could persuade Marner to accept a deal that aligns with the team’s Financial structure on the flip side the Leafs could explore contingency plans if a deal with Marner doesn’t materialize trading Marner would be a bold move but it could bring significant assets in return potentially bolstering the team in areas like defense or SE secondary scoring this option while unpopular with fans might be necessary to maintain roster balance the timing of these decisions is also Critical with the trade deadline months away the Leafs must assess whether keeping Marner without an extension risks losing him for nothing in free agency a preemptive trade could avoid the scenario but it would also signal a significant shift in the team’s short-term goals fan sentiment will undoubtedly influence the team’s approach Marner is not just an exceptional player he’s a fan favor and a symbol of homegrown Talent succeeding in Toronto losing him could lead to backlash especially if the team struggles in the aftermath of his departure the broader NHL landscape also plays a role as other teams navigate their own salary cap challenges the Leafs can learn from their successes and failures organizations like the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas golden knights have shown the value of balancing star power with depth offering a potential blueprint for Toronto’s future
