Derek McInnes Post-Match Interview | Rangers 6-0 Kilmarnock | Reaction & Defensive Concerns

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes reflects on a tough night at Ibrox after his side suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership. McInnes provides an honest assessment of his team’s performance, defensive struggles, and the lessons to be learned as they aim to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.

Key Points in Derek McInnes’ Post Match Press Conference (Rangers 6 Kilmarnock 0):

Kilmarnock’s First-Half Effort: McInnes acknowledges that his side competed reasonably well in the first half, with Rangers’ quality ultimately tipping the balance. He highlights the team’s defensive organization early on but admits lapses led to the opening goal.

Derek McInnes Tactical Adjustments: At halftime, McInnes switched to a 4-4-2 to counter Rangers’ movement but explains how the change left Kilmarnock exposed, leading to more goals and making it a night to forget.

Kilmarnock Defensive Issues: Addressing concerns over his team’s defensive record, McInnes points out the lack of clean sheets and a perceived softness in dealing with crosses and individual battles, particularly in key moments like Rangers’ first goal.

Kilmarnock Injury News: McInnes updates on injuries to key players, including Joe Wright, who was taken to the hospital for a scan, and the ongoing absence of Stokes Finlay. He stresses the importance of regaining defensive solidity, especially with a congested schedule ahead.

Mentality & Resilience in Football: McInnes criticizes his team’s second-half response, calling for a stronger mentality to prevent conceding goals in quick succession. He insists the heavy loss must serve as a wake-up call for players to rediscover the form and confidence they’ve shown in previous matches.

Looking Ahead: With a crucial game against Dundee United on the horizon, McInnes outlines the need to reset, regain defensive focus, and work towards keeping a clean sheet to rebuild confidence.

Full-time at Ibrox Park, where it finished Rangers 6 Kilmarnock 0 after a five-star performance in the second period by Philippe Clement’s men.

Rangers took the lead in the dying stages of the first half when captain James Tavernier got on the end of Yanis Hagi’s deep cross to make it 1-0 at the break. Eight minutes into the second half, Rangers came out firing. Danilo got on the end of another Hagi ballβ€”the Romanian getting his second assist of the nightβ€”before the striker made it 2-0 with a sliding finish.

The third came five minutes later, as Hamza Yego picked up the ball on the edge of the area and rifled in a stunning finish beyond Will Dennis to make it 3-0. Soon after, it was Nicholas Raskinβ€”who won man of the match this evening and impressed in the middle of the parkβ€”who danced his way into the Kilmarnock box before finding Rabbi Matondo, who slid a precise finish past the helpless Dennis.

That rung in the changes for Philippe Clement, who introduced Cyriel Dessers to the pitch. The striker managed to secure a tidy brace, with both finishes coming from inside the area, to round off the scoring at 6-0.

Rangers now have three wins from three as they continue to hunt down Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the table.

As for Derek McInnes, he’ll chalk this up to a bad night at the office. However, Kilmarnock’s eighth defeat of the season leaves them lingering far too close to the wrong end of the table for comfort.

It finishes here at Ibrox: Rangers 6, Kilmarnock 0.

tell us right way d That’s not really the performance we’ve come to expect for no I think I think um just spoke to the boys there about know Rangers can can beat I mean Rangers so many obvious advantages you can lose a game two or 39 here you can if they turn up and show their quality and I thought the first half in general we competed well enough um you know you say Rangers were a better team throughout of course they were um but there was a there was a we bit a determination about us a shape about us that allowed us to stay in the game and we lose a goal when you’re praying for V to get you horn but at end of the day I had a feeling that having his run um but ultimately it comes down for a throw in and we don’t do enough to stop across they just allow Haj to put the ball in the box and Tav has more determination got an end it so half time we speak about know I need to see I think Rangers the movement from Eiger man towards the ball and had come in off shape causes everybody a problem um you know I think that um in general you know they’ve got good players at the top end of the pitch and the movement at T SP to Major a get off it didn’t really help cuz we’re already a cutle Defenders down and it was a we bit patched I kind of patch back four um but we decided at half time to take that kind of decision making out try and go 442 against that um try and get two set and a halfs to go in tight um but it became pretty obvious that we we could couldn’t cope with that um so once the second goal the third goal goes in it was all but try to stop the bleeding and unfortunately for us it does matter it should matter to players that losing a game two or 3 n is different to losing five and six but we felt sorry for ourselves we failed to get the the fundamentals of stop your man stop across get tight in the box and yes Rangers were clinical Rangers had their tails up they start to enjoy the game I think once we flooded the Midfield we kind of stopped a way bit of the front lot and join the game but then then going outside is and we don’t stop crosses um so such a horrible night for us um it shows what can happen if you you don’t keep your determination and you don’t keep your concentration uh and keep your heads within you so um a horrible night for us not acceptable to lose in that type of manner we now need to try and get back to being the team we were we had we signs yet 6 weeks ago we beat Rangers a few weeks ago we beat Hearts 45 minute performance strong Saturday we’ve never been H like that this season um and it has to be um a reference for us now going forward that we try and go to dund United Saturday and the first portter calls to try and keep a clean sheet and get back to getting a bit of confidence into our defensive work um and that’s what we’ll try and do we’ll move on for this quickly was a big J wait to hospital for a scan so wait wait see um we weren’t even allowed to use that as a concussion sub um we had to get wanted to get Maly Watkins off at the end but seem we didn’t notify the referee quick enough so um but we need to wait and see how Joe is um obviously St Finley’s injury and one or two shes have got with injuries it’ be good if we can get all clear on that one for the weekend was his head or his jaw head head let’s go yeah you spoke a little bit about the defense there um there’s only been one clean sheet in the league go season I believe with that result tonight H Kell to do the most goals in the league which is largely the same defense as last season when you were so solid so what’s behind that um I mean don’t want put to I do think um St Finley is a massive loss for us I’ll be honest with that but we can’t hard point about that you know and we’ve got to deal with what we’ve got to deal with we have um we’ve always tried to go quite positive we get the benefit of going with two white players two Strikers and in the main we’ve tried to do that um there is a trade-off for that when you come up against teams that play a bit more direct or the better teams you have to then be able to cope and defend man for man a lot of time um and unfortunately for us we’ve not done it with the same confidence or um aggressive manner to try try and stop your opponent play um getting opportunities I think just a we bit too easy to play against um and like I say I thought we were all right in the game but the first goal is important especially here when Rangers are you know coming off the back of a about of scrutiny and you don’t want to get them a leg up and we spoke about that but just allow a cross into the box and and tavier a fullback is more determined to go on the end all these we things matter all these we things matter but we we go as we are we’ve got some better games obviously the imbalance of playing away games to home games is I think been quite um pivot and we need to start being a team who can cope away from home and back to being a winning team at home again Che
