[Applause] hello everybody and welcome into the devil’s Z just postgame show following Arizona State’s 28-23 victory over number 14 BYU Arizona State improves to 9 and2 on the season as always my name is Justin Lester toed that’s publisher H orbino and ho just like kind of every single home game we’ve seen from Arizona State a White Knuckle win down to the wire but they found a way to win nonetheless and this is the first time Arizona States finished undefeated at home since 2004 what did you see out of that performance yeah I think that some of the wins Justin over here where White Knuckle uh really mixed him with some grit uh this was a game actually that ASU was absolutely almost on cruise control playing so well uh in in in the first half absolutely dominating BYU uh the second half was a a a different different uh all together but uh Arizona State when a mattered the most what really was able to make the play a huge interception by Javon Robinson there at the end uh made this a White Knuckle game which also equals a White Knuckle win I mean I mean what what else can you say about this team Justin I mean I mean I I I pick him to go six and six I look like a fool then then when they’re winning like four or five games I’m saying okay you know maybe maybe eight wins is a ceiling of this team and maybe by the way Kenny Dillingham is goingon to use all this video that I’m that you’re seeing right now to motivate the team next week and and then the week after that but uh it’s just amazing how they just keep on exceeding expectations time and time again uh this was not an easy opponent by by any means uh BYU may be uh surprised I think everybody how how prly played in the first half but the second half like I said it really was a much much different uh story uh you know it’s not something that uh is going to be maybe someone an unpleasant uh film session on both sides of the ball for the sundevils but uh but the bottom line is they win they move on and uh they are in the driver seat for the Big 12 title game let me repeat that again the team that was picked last in a 16 team conference by the Big 12 media preseason poll is in the driver seat for the Big 12 title game what a world and you mentioned it was sort of a tail two halves and offensively cam scabo three touchdowns in that first half and was really carrying a bulk of that load for Arizona State but started slower in that second half but eventually was able to come out on top yeah we we talked about in our previous Justin that uh this BYU team is uh very opportunistic when it comes to the passing game but in terms of the run defense they’re not the worst in the league but it’s definitely a unit that I expected ASU to find some success how fitting is it for cam scabo uh playing his last game probably at Mount America Stadium I mean who knows if ASU you know gets into the playoffs we might even see a one one more game over here but uh but nonetheless uh cam scabo an outstanding game 28 carries 147 yards averaging over five yards a carry like you said uh scoring three touchdowns uh you know second half I really think the BYU to your point where really was able to figure him out but uh you know Sam levit did just enough uh to uh really give Asus a little more cushion uh levit was uh 16 out of 25 247 yards one touchdown had one interception in the first half which ended up really not costing ASU uh but um the big play that he had is his 61 yd pass uh for Touchdown to Xavier gillery you know we talk about all the time who’s going to step up besides Jordan Tyson well tonight or today I should say it really was Xavier gillery Jordan Tyson by the way wasn’t uh exactly uh having an off game by any means nine receptions 125 yards uh but uh you know this offense like I said uh really did slow down uh in in the second half and that uh touchdown by Giller I just mentioned a second ago ultimately that that was really the difference in the game now obviously we have to talk about the fourth down Decisions by uh Kenny Dillingham it is kind of a heads scratching I got I got to admit that here you have a field goal kicker in Parker Lewis which okay maybe he didn’t have that much confidence in him up until last week he did make a 47 y on the road at Kansas State last week so to not give him an opportunity to kick a field goal in the Red Zone much closer than a 47 y that would give ASU just a little more Breathing Room would in need the heroics of a Javon Robin son for example in the end uh that really is that really is a is a head scratcher U you know I know that you can talk every game win or loss but a lot of plays you you like to take back I don’t know if this is a play that the coaching staff would or would not uh want to take back did it matter no it didn’t matter but um I just wonder that if a situation like this arises against Arizona next week or let alone in the postseason uh what kind of approach Arizona State uh does take in the end it didn’t matter another win for ASU no such thing as an ug ugly Victory and uh this uh was a game which as you suspected was going to be all about the running game all about Cam scabo and the senior delivers one more time for the eenth time yeah and for in that first half um you had that tip pass by Prince dorba picked off by Jordan crook couple turnovers on Downs Arizona state was able to limit BYU in that first half but second half the Cougars started to catch up a little bit but it wasn’t until that final or one of the final drives of the game Javin Robin game sealing pick what did you see at of asu’s Defense yeah it’s funny cuz when I was looking at the the box score I thinking myself uh when when’s the last time ASU surrendered uh 20 points in the second half and still won and then I remembered oh yeah it didn’t happen that too long ago about two months ago against Mississippi State so uh that was the type of game that that ASU defense had uh you have to give kudos to the BYU staff um I really thought that they had that as defense on on its heels uh I think coverage left a lot to be desired I think pass rushing was really almost non-existent uh for for the sundevils sure you can look at the bottom bottom line Javin Robinson an interception deep deep in in the fourth quarter to seal the game uh and then the P pandemonium ensued uh a few a few minutes later uh but uh you know it’s a defense that was I think able to contain Jake rlof who had a very uh lukewarm and maybe worse than that first half but second half I think uh he he definitely played outstanding uh and again it’s really was a BYU team that wasn’t able to run the ball all that well against the sundevils but against the pass I’m sorry but passing the ball they really found a lot of success in in the second half uh so you know the defense definitely has uh some things to clean up because I think the game against Arizona next week uh you are P you are facing even a more prolific passing uh attack that that you faced today so definitely some things to clean up yeah and Arizona State not only beats BYU but Colorado loses to Kansas so ASU is now firmly in the driver seat to make the big 12 Championship but something else to note U OFA lost to TCU so really not much going for them in this final game but who better to spoil the party than the wild cats yeah that that’s exactly what what they’re thinking they’re definitely in a familiar position for the older fans out out there uh in the 80s uh the wild cats uh were uh did that on more than one occasion uh really ruining Arizona State’s chances getting into the Rose Bowl now they have a chance uh to do that uh ruin their chances getting getting into the big fil title game like you said Justin if ASU wins next week doesn’t H doesn’t matter what happens to Iowa State later today doesn’t matter what happens with Iowa State Colorado and BYU next week ASU wins ASU is in if I’m ma is right not only they in but they actually in as the number one seed so to speak the regular uh season Champion for the Big 12 again just blows my mind to even say those words about a team that was picked last in the media preseason poll so uh you know this is a game that uh ASU uh is have to prepare mentally uh very very well um again there’s definitely things to clean up uh based on the second half performance ASU has to do that effectively uh because UA this is overstating the obvious this is their Super Bowl next week they have no bowl game on the line all they have at stake over here is ruin asu’s chances of making it to the Big 12 title game so uh this uh this is definitely going to be a much more interesting game than anybody thought just uh a couple a couple months ago but uh this is a team Justin he just really really cannot count them out um you know they find ways to win whether it’s heroics in the second half or really just building such a big cushion in the first half that even they could not screw it up uh in in in the second half uh I I just really really impress with Arizona State stepping up to the plate the buzz around this game that the sellout crowd a huge by BYU crowd maybe not the 20,000 that I heard a couple days ago but they definitely came in force uh student section was off the chain uh it really was a great environment en and I think the ASU players have to be proud of themselves that they able to respond to that environment not get CAU up in the emotions uh and just showed their passion um on the field uh in the second half uh in the waiting moments of the game uh to Come Away with a precious precious Victory well H here we are Arizona State 9 and2 on the season and as you just mentioned before this is uova Super Bowl next week up in tucon as the Sun Devils come to visit
