The Utah Utes and Kyle Whittingham landed their next Big 12 starting quarterback in former New Mexico Football star Devin Dampier. As one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the transfer portal, Dampier’s move from the New Mexico Lobos to the Utah Utes could be a game-changer for the team. With his dual-threat capabilities and a strong connection with offensive coordinator Jason Beck, the Utes are poised for a dynamic shift in their offensive strategy.

Could the potential impact of Dampier’s transfer lead to his former teammates Eli Sanders, Luke Wysong, and Ryan Davis? What does the surprising news of Bill Belichick’s coaching move to UNC mean for the implications for college football’s “old guard,” including coaches like Kyle Whittingham?

On today’s episode of Locked On Utes, JT Wistrcill and Ryan McDonald of the Deseret News react to the news that Utah has found their quarterback for the 2025 college football season.

Time download the game time app create an account use code locked on College all caps no spaces for $20 off your first purchase my name is JJ wher former intern inside the University of Utah athletic department excited to be joined on Today’s Show by the desert news is Ryan McDonald and Ryan Utah got a quarterback and I couldn’t be more excited because this guy is the definition Devon dampier of an electric player he led the fourth best offense in the country last year Jason Beck Utah’s new offensive coordinator it was his quarterback damp was so we already know they have a strong connection there he was sixth nationally in total offense at 327.2 yards per game and to put that in perspective West Coast CFB tweeted out on X he was shador Sanders was seven so he had more total yards on offense than shador Sanders does that mean he’s better than shador no but he’s incredibly Dynamic when you look at what he did from a passing and rushing standpoint last year he really stands alone in in that regard too so an incredibly Dynamic dual threat quarterback that is GNA make Utah’s offense honestly I think fun and it has not been fun the last couple years to watch Utah’s offense and a lot there’s a lot to unpack um with it first there is the the Jason back angle and I think um as soon as it happened I think this in a way has been kind of the the um worst kept secret over the past however many days you know since since uh since the the coaching staff Bron shout out Bronco menal um leaving so that uh you know maybe Dan Pier would have entered the portal anyway um he might have just given where you know that he’s he’s a P4 quarterback I I think and and you know there is going to be that question of is he gonna is he gonna be able to translate to the P4 level um you know because there’s a whole big history of guys who you know were great at at the at lower levels and couldn’t couldn’t make the step up and and so I think there’s a little bit bit of a question there we’ll see but like you said um I I should have had it pulled up ready to go but I wrote a story and I I referenced a tweet um a couple days ago where I think he’s the only quarterback in the in the country to pass for 2500 yards and run for 1,500 yards I might be wrong on those numbers but in essence like you said um he put up numbers this past season uh I think I’m C I’m cutting out um he put up numbers this season that were were in a class of his own so yeah I think it’s great yeah no he I mean he’s an incredible Talent when you look at what he has done during his time at New Mexico I mean he was fantastic and the stat that you referenced Ryan was absolutely correct he has put up those J dra dropping numbers in fact it was 36 FBS players this comes for us from Ben Stevens 36 FBS players ran for at least a th000 yards only one FBS player ran for a th000 and threw for 2,500 that was Devon dampier he’s an incredible dual threat quarterback and like you mentioned it’s fair to say Okay can he do it at this next level well the answer to that at least based on what he did against Power five teams power four teams last year is yes you look at what he did against Arizona and he had he led that in that game they had 39 points even against alurn like they scored they had 19 points but so and that’s obviously with them going against the DraStic difference in Talent his offensive line is going to be a lot stronger so he’ll be better protect protected watch him against Auburn and watch him make guys miss SEC Defenders he is capable of producing at this level yes he threw 12 interceptions so he’s got to cut that down but another year of growth another year comfortable with Jason Beck and he had 19 rushing touchdowns too so this is not some guy that has to do at all and you could also say well okay well what did he do towards the end of the season final three games didn’t turn the ball over final two games had six rushing touchdowns and also I’ll throw this one at you against Washington State best team he played Four total touchdowns had 193 rushing yards he is an elite Runner and he’s also more than capable of making quality throws at quarterback yeah um shout out Ben Stevens that is the guy well as soon as soon as you said his name I was like yeah that’s that’s the guy who who uh whose stat I I referenced um yeah to me and to me I think the fact that he is coming with Jason Beck is huge uh I I think a lot of times in the portal era you get guys who who you don’t have any real familiarity with other than scouting him like you would a high school recruit say you know like yeah you’re scouting them and and you hope that you’re you you have a good scouting eye but you don’t know you know you don’t know for sure until the guys get on campus and and you start working with them how exactly things are gonna pan out I think the fact that he’s coming with Jason backck um is huge I think it just gives a a level of of reassurance to me and Hope to fans that that he’s going to be he’s going to be good and I think it also is worth bearing in mind that Utah would not have been able to land damp here honestly even a quarterback like in the same I mean Stratosphere if not for the Jason back higher I know it wasn’t the first choice obviously Arbuckle then left witch but they end up going to getting Beck and now Beck brings in damp here and we said this before just because he’s the third choice doesn’t mean Beck can’t end up being the best guy and doesn’t mean and dampier is so good honestly like dampier is good enough I’m not saying that dampier alone is the difference between why Utah is gonna contend in the Big 12 next year but Utah is Absol Utah now has a quarterback that is capable of with or I should say a quarterback that along with the rest of this team Utah can contend in the Big 12 next year I’m not saying they deserve to be one of the five preseason favorites but I feel a lot better about this Utah team on paper than I did BYU’s team last year or Arizona States when you look at what dampier has done the amount of talent that Utah still brings back on defense know they lost Calhoun but still got some absolute dudes on both sides of the ball this could be the first domino in what could be continuing to add recruits and talent that leads to Utah contending in the Big 12 next year and getting the quarterback spot was Paramount Beck and Utah have been able to do that Ryan yep yep um yeah you brought up I’ll put it this way um I was a little bit nervous about first of all apologies for when I’m if I’m cutting out and all y’all all y’all uh Watchers are are seeing that not sure what’s going on but we we we carry on um I think there there there got to be a little bit of fear in in me at least of of who are they gonna who are they going to be able to land um you know the Washington State quarterback maybe you think oh he’ll come with with Arbuckle if if Arbuckle comes and and that’ll be great because John matier is awesome and and so you start thinking about that and but then oh well that didn’t happen and and yeah they’re a big 12 team so they would have been able to get somebody but still you know there there I I think there was a little bit of of fear starting potentially grow and and yeah to to have to have Devon damp again maybe Jason Beck is gonna be great but even if he’s not great if he bring him bringing Devon damp Pier is all right that that’s worth getting Jason backck um yeah yeah it absolutely is I’m he’s an incredible dual threat quarterback who had great success at the group of five he started a lot of games so he has that experience it’s not like a okay Isaac Wilson getting his first few starts you know even Bryson Barnes the year before he had only started a handful of games he started every game danamp Pier did last year so I’m incredibly excited of the experience he brings he’s a dynamic dual threat quarterback watch him make plays against Arizona watch him make plays against Auburn the potential is there for him to be an elite power four quarterback and I feel really confident that Jason Beck is gonna be able to get the best out of dampier and that damper is gonna become a star in Salt Lake City but he might not be the only one from the New Mexico offense let’s talk about some of the other low BOS who are in the transfer portal that could be joining Devon dampier in Salt Lake City and we’ll be discussing that in one moment but first today’s episode locked on Utes is brought to you by our great friends at game time game time has your back locked o for on and all of college capitalized for $20 off download game time today what time is it game time all right Ryan coming back in this one talking about more players who could be joining this Utah football team I it’s incredibly exciting to land damp here but Utah and this offense aren’t done yet I think one of the biggest things that Utah could do is land Eli Sanders the running back for the Lobos last year who did have over a thousand yards rushing 1,63 yards to be exact nine touchdowns to only 134 passing yards but I’m much more concerned with the backfield production Utah’s running back room is looking Barren right now Mike Mitchell’s the guy at the moment but when you lose John Randle when you lose tojon Stanley when you lose Anthony Woods mackai Bernard’s graduat waiting I believe Charlie Vincent is too I don’t know maybe he somehow has another year of Eligibility left in today’s era of College college football but I do think this would be a big yet and I will say Sanders tweeted the eyeball Emoji as soon as Dan Pier locked in his commitment to Utah so he has the history with Jason Beck he’s obviously on good terms with Dan Pier I would love to see Sanders in Salt Lake City yeah um first I guess thought the eyeballs because I think that happened um a little bit before you and I just a short time got on there yeah Eli Sanders the the the eyes emoji he he posted a tweet of like 50 of those emojis so um um he’s interesting because uh to he started his career Iowa State played a couple of years at at Iowa State obviously in the Big 12 um didn’t produce a a whole lot and so he he went to New Mexico and and just exploded um this season and and so there again to me is a question of of can he translate to the Big 12 again can did did something all of a sudden just click and he’s like all right I’m I’m Big 12 caliber again it it seems like that because he’s getting offers from a a whole lot of places and so even with the New Mexico connections I I’m wondering and I’m questioning if if Utah’s still gonna have to work for him um maybe maybe not maybe maybe it’s kind of a all right Jason Beck’s going to Utah uh Devon damper’s going to Utah I’ll go to Utah as well maybe maybe it’s a kind of a shoe in done deal but but uh yeah he obviously had a great season at New Mexico and and um was there bcow was there you know their their big time rusher so Utah on some level at this point Utah needs bodies like you know uh and so on some level it’s like yeah he’s as good as anyone out there and even if he doesn’t even if he’s not a number one guy in the Big 12 he he’s a they need people that sounds pessimistic maybe but but um he certainly produced last season and and so I think I guess what I’m trying to say is at the very least he’s he’s a guy that has produced in the past and and so you might as well bring him in and and see if he can produce again Michigan State Arkansas Virginia Tech just a handful of the teams that have already offered Sanders so obviously those programs believe that he can produce the group of five level power five level after what he did at the group of five level last year be interesting to see if Utah can get in on the War for Sanders speaking of just the transfer portal and guys though and also just former Lobos it doesn’t just start with Sanders who had a thousand yards rushing dampier was the team’s leading rusher though last year dampier averaged seven and a half yards per carry I just don’t know how you can’t turn this guy’s tape on and not be incredibly fired up to have what I think is it could chance to be a star under Center in Salt Lake City but not just him you also got his receivers last year were also in the portal Luke weong and Ryan Davies weong 840 yards Davies 747 yards I think Utah should absolutely be in on both of these guys both of them were produced at the group of five level both of them were part of the fourth best offense in the country they have a reliable connection with dampier and when you’re talking about Utah receivers right right now taan Lions has not entered the portal yet so you still get taan Lions Daran zipper and obviously Zacharias Williams what he did in the final game that is a lot of potential not a lot of proven because you can’t overreact to one game with Williams and zippered moments but they were limited Why songs the guy who’s coming off over 700 yards and so is Davies so that would give Utah some guys who have proven they can succeed on a college football field and I would like that mix I don’t think it would be oh let’s add these two guys then we’re done keep looking for receivers but this would be a really nice start to land either one of those two receivers and give dampier a familiar face in the passing game to throw to yep um I I think that familiarity is is a big thing um you know just hey we we did this last season let’s go let’s do it again and and um with Luke weong in particular I remember last year when Bronco got hired um it was a big deal Luke y song is from New Mexico um his brother played at New Mexico he has multiple family members I can’t remember exactly off the top of my head but he’s got multiple family members who um played either football or I think he had an aunt who played basketball at New Mexico so he comes from a long line of of Lobos and um um I remember when Bronco got hired it was a big deal when they retained Yong um when when he decided not to to go in the portal and and decided to to play Under Bronco last year and and so he’s obviously he’s really good um I know he’s really good and and um the fact that he decided all right I’m going to G to try and and enter the portal this time around with with the coaching change I I think is interesting and and yeah I think you bring up a point in terms of again kind of going back to that idea idea of bodies bring in as much talent as as and as much production as you think as you can and then let guys fight for it if taan Lions wants to if he can beat out out Luke weong to be you know the number one guy great if Luke weong ends up being the number one guy great but the more guys and the more proven guys I think that you can bring in for competition is only going to make the team better and and so yeah they produce they’re familiar with the offense come on in I say and fight for time playing time yeah and once again I it is fair to wonder can Danier work week in and week out against Power four teams it’s fair to wonder all of that but I’ll also say this dampier was one of the most sought after quarterbacks in the transfer portal there were other teams that wanted him and when you get the when you have the fourth best offense in all of college football you’ve proven you deserve the opportunity to move up and also I’ll say it again did it he made plays against Auburn made plays against Arizona I know it’s not impressive the ladder making plays against Arizona everyone did that last year but I’m just saying that there’s a chance this could really work out well for Utah making basically Utah’s offense the Lobos in in the power force so I’m excited to see what this group can do and as exciting as it was Utah Landing Devon dampier there was some news that was more exciting and rocked the college football world that’s bill bellich is coming to college football he’s goingon to be coaching at UNC that’s right he’s coming to Chapel Hill to coach the tar Hills want to talk about what that means for Kyle Whittingham actually in one moment but first today’s episode of Locked Vikings taking on the Chicago Bears it’s going to be another awesome week of NFL action we got Army Navy how about the NBA continuing to deliver with the NBA Commissioners cup also got the NHL Utah Hockey Club in action and bull season right around the corner including the exciting introduction of the college football playoff can’t wait to see how all plays out and if you want to get in on the action once again you can head over to FanDuel Sportsbook today bill bellich is coaching in college football Kyle Winningham Pier as a college coach is Bill bellich I am shocked to say the least it is Wild Bill B is a heck of a head coach so I’m very curious to see what he’s going to do at North Carolina I think how this relates to Utah though Ryan I do want to get your reaction just to the higher two because I think it is that noteworthy and ground shaking just when you hire the greatest NFL coach for my money of all time to coach your college team I think the interesting thing is it is going to be a fascinating or and honestly in some ways make or break year for the Old Guard of college coaches and just coaches in general in college football next year Mike Gundy barely kept his job Kyle Whittingham was never on the hot seat but look there’s some frustration obviously with how things went down at Utah if Utah disappoints once again we’ll we’ll see what happens here also Kirk fence at Iowa longest tenard coach in the sport disappointing year Iowa didn’t reach their didn’t reach their goals and wasn’t their normal cell they weren’t ranked and now you get Bill bich who’s going to try to bring in that old school NFL style to UNC this could be the last year of the Old Guard in college football like all four of those individuals I don’t think fence is on the hot seat of the and obviously Bill Bel just got the job but can those four coaches make it work next year as the oldest coaches in the sport I’m fascinated to find out Ryan yeah um it it’s wild the fact that he’s that he’s doing it in the first plays I mean you know we’ve we’ve been hearing the the reports for the past couple days and so that it it was trending toward happening and and so it’s not a complete you know we’ve I think we’ve had a couple of days to be like to get used to the idea a little bit but yeah now the fact that it’s official it’s just like my goodness this is this is wild um but to your point of about um some of the older coaches ye yeah um I I think it’s a it’s a really good point um well see you know you you’ve got I I think I think you’ve got kind of the younger gener the Kenny dilling hams you know that that that that ilk of of coach who is um very different from from the the Kyle whitting I mean Kyle Whittingham and Kenny Dillingham I I don’t think watch that I’d watch that buddy cot movie I don’t think they could be much diff their the much different uh P personalities and and not the age is is everything as it relates to to why personalities are are different and whatnot but but yeah you’re you’re I think your point is well taken that that some of these older guys are are falling on tricky times as as the sport is changing and and and some of these younger guys are Kenny Dillingham is going to the college football playoff after after Arizona state was left for dead what two what was it two years ago um you know and so there’s a lot I think there’s a lot that goes into it but yeah I think your point is really well taken that I think it’s gonna be interesting to to watch bichi in relation to the whitting hams and the gundies to see if if they can turn around obviously bich is going to have the the name recognition the the so it might not be fair to compare him with Kyle Whittingham with Mike Gundy with Kirk fens just given his his name recognition and everything that he’s done but still I do think your point is what’s that it’s an older coaching style though that’s where Trend yeah I I think your point is is still well taken though that we’ll see if it works I I am a little skeptical well considerably skeptical and I think a lot of people are of is this whole experiment at North Carolina G to work you know bringing a guy who has zero College coaching experience is it gonna work we’ll see I don’t know it’s fun on December 11th though it’s super fun we we’ll see we’ll see what things are like like come next October how North Carolina is doing but it’s fun for now I’m excited I’ll be honest too I actually think it’s going to work I think he’s a really good coach I think it’s been already reported they’re going to get about 20 million in nil funds going so that’s a large amount and I think that maybe can like Al I don’t know what Alabama’s War chest is right but like some of the other schools like the UNCC will be competing with if it’s not a massive dollar figure difference the opportunity to work with Bill bich if I’m trying to get to the NFL that’s that’s valuable and I think that they’re going to get good recruits they’re going to be well coached I I think eight and four right now easily next season I really think I think it’s going to work I trust him I trust the roster they’re going to build we’ll see it’s it’s gonna be a lot of fun just like it’s gonna be a lot of fun watching the Utah offense next year with Devon dampier under Center and hopefully some more Lobos and it’s always a blast having you on Ryan if people want to read more about damp pi and everything going on in the Utah Sports World where they need to head over to hit me up on X there in the handle and then deseret.com de s.com awesome Ryan thank you man always appreciate you coming on absolutely always a pleasure thanks JT that’s gonna do it for today’s locked on news be coming back tomorrow talking about Kyle Whittingham and if he can succeed in the modern era of college football we’ll see you then
