okay uh we’re around an hour away from the draw for the FIFA Club World Cup which takes place in the United States next summer the tournament has been surrounded by controversy though ever since it was announced and you can see our chief reporter rejoins me on set now carve uh to just tell us a little bit more why has it been so controversial this one well it depends if you are anti- FIFA or Pro FIFA uh now if you are anti- FIFA I think it’s fair to say most people in this sort of area of the world part of the world are anti- FIFA okay would say why do we need this competition this is a joke our players are already playing too many games why is FIFA getting involved in club football FIFA historically has a World Cup for countries not clubs clubs leave it to the leagues leave it to UEFA for instance FIFA is just doing this to make more money uh Johnny and fantino is on a like sort of Power Trip uh he’s looked at the fact that UEFA are richer than FIFA because they have the Champions League that brings in money every year as well as the Euros whereas FIFA only really have the World Cup once every four years so he’s looking for another Cash Cow and he’s found it with this new tournament every four years it’s going to be the World Cup but instead of countries it’s going to be clubs it is a ridiculous idea that is what people who are anti- FIFA would say people people who are pro FIFA and there are people around the world who are pro- FIFA outside uh Europe what they would say is imagine you’re in our shoes imagine you’re a football association in Asia or Africa or South America all our best players are being bought by clubs in Europe yeah then they play in the Champions League and the European leagues our football fans are deprived of watching their own players and also they sit in front of TVs watching European leagues and the Champions League we want a competition as well we want to grow and develop football we want our best teams to play in a competition as good as the champions league and FIFA will say we’re listening to these clubs all around the world and that is why we’ve got this new tournament and all those people who say we are just about money remember we’re a nonprofit organization so all the money that you say we make we reinvest in developing the game around the world so it all depends if you’re pro- FIFA or anti- FIFA whether you think this is a good idea okay so you just told me what they’re listening to but are they listening to the players when they say we’re burnt out because we’ve already had that haven’t we from rodri this season already yeah I mean this is this is a really serious issue and it’s so serious actually that uh the European leagues and players unions are taking taking legal action against FIFA at the European commission over the international match calendar they are saying FIFA did not consult us properly when it came to the international match calendar uh FIFA would say that yes we did but look this is a real big debate in football at the moment how much we are expecting our top players to play and if you look at what is going to happen uh for instance over the next few months we’re going to have the draw in Miami in less than an hour for the club World Cup I don’t know why me and you are not there I know got to ask the boss I think Miami’s nice this time of year but anyway let’s be serious then on May the 25th the Premier League season ends uh you’ve got May the 28th conference League final May the 31st Champions League final and just two weeks after the Champions League final for instance Manchester City players if they play in the Champions League final two weeks later they’ll have to start playing in the club World Cup that lasts a month the final is in July the 13th uh in New York if you make it there you can make it anywhere and then less than a month later after the final the Premier League season kicks off you look at this if you’re a Manchester City player for instance and you think where am I going to get a break what is happening to World football the Champions League it’s expanding there are more and more games everywhere surely this is a tournament too far do you know what FIFA would say FIFA would say we understand this is a big issue but let’s be fair we are not the problem here because if you look at all the games that are played around the world only something like one or two% of them are FIFA games all the other games uh League games or uh Continental competition games for instance UEFA games so FIFA is saying yes this is a problem but it is a problem you should be speaking to the leagues and the confederations about instead of constantly criticizing us about it but they’ just put in a another tournament with yeah but but they would say but they would say we’ve got a World Cup that’s every every four years we’re not the ones who’ve got you know 38 uh game leagues we’re not the ones who are expanding the Champions League we’re not the ones who are making uh clubs play two three times every week what what we’ve got is just a World Cup every four years and now we’re going to have a World Cup for clubs every four years and this is what the clubs want okay that’s what they would say all right well you make a good case for them um look just explain why people at home are saying hang on a minute you’re you’re telling me it’s Manchester City and Chelsea and it’s not the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal and other teams why is why are Manchester City in this draw and Chelsea and just explain how the draw works well Manchester City and Chelsea have got in because they have won the Champions League over the past four years yes that is how they have qualified now I I hear what you’re saying because some people would say how can you have a club World Cup next summer summer and if Liverpool win the title uh for instance and Arsenal win the Champions League they won’t be in it I don’t know maybe that’s something they need to look at in the future when it comes to how the draw is going to work good news for traditionalists it is an oldfashioned 32 team uh tournament so you’ll have eight groups of four the top two will go into the round of 16 there’ll be a quarterfinal semifinal and then the final in New York New Jersey at the MetLife Stadium and the good news is no third place playoff [Music]
