what we’re doing is we’re talking about some Elliot fredman bait and by the way if you recognize where that intro is from then hey sorry to say it but your brain is probably as roted as mine is but today we’re heading over to the recent 32 thoughts podcast and Elliot fredman’s commentary on the Pittsburgh Penguins you see this was posted on Twitter earlier yesterday and NHL Watcher gives us the quote as to what fredman is thinking Pittsburgh could use here’s the Tweet I’m sitting here thinking okay who else could Pittsburgh Target look I’m not saying they’re talking to Montreal or anything like that but I can’t help but wonder about Kirby dock being that kind of a guy ignite the Montreal Pittsburgh trade talk once again ladies and gentlemen Chris leang Sydney Crosby whomever the hell else it is let’s talk about Pittsburg let’s talk about Montreal where exactly is this idea coming from well the Pittsburgh Penguins are in a spot where in the efforts of trying to sustain their life beyond Sydney Crosby they could very well be looking for younger guys guys who are maybe not necessarily top prospects right now but guys in that ruer mity kind of mold young enough where they could probably contribute something significant into the long-term future but also good enough in the now that you could probably say they are NHL talents oh wait Rea mcor is in the AHL never mind but Kirby Doc is somebody that fits that mold to a tea and it’s why the Canadians went out there and acquired him in a trade all those years ago doc was the third overall pick back in 2019 behind Jack Hughes and Capo kako and he has had a pretty rough start to this season so far I don’t want to be all too harsh on the guy because he did have himself a 38 point in 58 game campaign with the Habs in 2223 but the year after he only played two games he was a point per game in those two games though which is good but he only played two games and then this season he has had himself a little bit of a rough start as well he’s got only eight points in 22 games played on Pace for 30 on the Year this actually is one of the worst stretches that doc has had with the Canadians thus far as he only has what is that three points in his last uh what is 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 games yeah three points in 13 games is not going to cut it there was a really good stint that doc had when he was playing on the first line for a little bit but other than that this is definitely not a player who’s playing his best hockey right now and a lot of Canadians fans will agree that some of the potential that we saw out of Doc in Prior years and even in that small sample when he was on the first line it’s been a little bit more difficult to dig that out of him as of late but it remains to be seen what doc becomes longterm because he is only 23 years old at the time of recording this audio he’s going to be a pretty good player long term and I think if everything goes right doc could still be a 65 to 70 point playmaking big Center Allah Ryan get slav kind of guy that was always what he was supposed to be and I think heading into this season and Beyond we have also seen that there is a little bit of a smooth skating fancy passing kind of player at the Habs disposal here but from the Pittsburgh Penguins angle they kind of need a lot more young guys their best players are older and they’re not going to be around forever so thinking about the future thinking about what the penguins have sacrificed to keep this core together in the way that it has been you have to maybe bolster up the cupboard eventually right and for Kirby doc he’s one of the few players who was young enough to make an impact long term while also being able to provide NHL offense right now at least if you discount the however many pointless games he has had so far this season and some of the other performances throughout the year where he hasn’t looked great with this in mind though Kirby do being a Pittsburgh Target is interesting because we have heard about other Montreal and Pittsburgh trade talks in the past I’m not suggesting that a Kirby dock for chrys L Tang trade would ever go through there would have to be a lot more assets added on the Montreal side I’m sure but it is intriguing to see these conversations between these two teams opened up once more and furthermore if you really wanted to address what the Canadians have and you wanted to say that there was some sort of a log Jam I’m not saying that Kirby do is not needed on the Canadians but if you wanted to make the argument okay Coffield silovsky Suzuki demidov L assume you resign him and then you bring up somebody like a Josh W or you wanted to get maybe some more Center minutes for Michael haage or if you wanted to play demid Dov at Center instead new hook could also play C There’s an opportunity to work your team around the idea that Doc is not going to be there anymore like it’s not the end of the world if you remove Kirby doc from this roster especially with the way he’s been playing as of late so if a team like Pittsburgh wants to come in and capitalize on the potential they see what he could be they see what he has done in the past when he was a prospect when he was dominating in the WHL and they say yeah we want that kind of guy for our team long term then okay it would make sense if a team like P B especially is looking for a guy like Doc but as many of the replies in the NHL Watcher tweet say the mtra Canadians would not really be in the best position to trade away a guy like Doc in the first place the top comment and the reply says here the Habs would be dumb to trade doc now the guy’s value is at an all-time low he’s playing some of the worst hockey he has had in his entire career he’s not looking confident and he’s not looking dangerous so why would the Canadians trade this guy away today or tomorrow or next week or whatever of course there’s no definite timeline that’s suggested by fredman he’s just tossing the idea of Doc out there but the Canadians if they wanted to trade Kirby do away they wouldn’t get much if they tried to do that now and it’s kind of a reverse psychological Paradox if doc ends up getting his value up let’s say Doc goes on a huge 10 points in 10 game streak sometime in January at that point his value would be a lot higher and a team like Pitts would be calling being like yeah we want this guy yeah he’s really great but then Montreal is going to be like okay why would we trade him he got 10 points in his last 10 games he’s only 23 years old and he’s going to get better so we have no reason to trade him anymore it kind of goes both ways it’s a live by the sword Die By The Sword sort of thing for Montreal because there’s no reason for them to trade away a Kirby dock who’s actually producing and actually playing well unless they really do believe in Ivan demidov and they want themselves a center core of Suzuki let’s say demid or whatever and then you have maybe Michael ha and Owen Beck and Jake Evans and whomever else we can talk about Jake Evans later in Today’s Show by the way but there’s no reason to trade kirok away if he’s doing well if he’s doing poorly then there’s no reason to trade him away because you’re not going to get much value for him the Montreal Canadians would need to fully come to terms with the idea that Kirby do will not be a part of their future if they were to trade this guy away that’s the biggest thing it’s not necessarily about the value it’s not necessarily about his production or how good he is it’s how the Montreal Canadians see them building their team long term and if Doc is not a part of that then okay now you have the flexibility to think about a trade and to open yourselves up to the idea that he is no longer going to be there because long term I mean you think about what the Canadians gave up to get Doc in the first place there were a few trades that happened simultaneously the Canadians essentially essentially traded away Alexander Romanov and grabbed back kiry do that’s kind of how the trade tree goes there so they ended up making that move Romanov is now a top to defenseman in New York he’s playing like 23 to 25 minutes a night he’s fantastic doesn’t produce many points but he does everything else he need a defenseman to do and that kind of guy is pretty valuable I’d say that Romanov if he was on the Montreal Canadians he’d be like Kaden ghouly on steroids pretty much he’s great and the Canadians gave that up for Kirby doc who is in this position where he’s definitely not playing as effectively as Alexander Romanov is so let me know your thoughts in the comments section below how do you feel about the idea of the Canadians trading
