[Music] what’s up everybody welcome into Dodger heads presented by Dodger blue.com my name is Jeff Spiegel joined today by Fabian ardia of the athletic Fabian thanks so much for joining us uh you know the offseason has now a month in and the winter meetings haven’t happened yet so how is uh how’s November treating you that’s been good quiet for a little after hectic October so I’ll gladly take it and I’m sure it’ll be pretty busy offseason ahead so I’m going to catch my breath while I can do it do it well hey uh I haven’t had you on since so I want to say this upfront and I’m not just saying this because you’re on part of the reason I like having you on I think you’re one of the best at what you get to do and I just want to say Your World Series recap piece uh covering Walker buer and the moment with Clayton Kershaw and all that I thought it was fantastic the the ability to get that story of Clayton Kershaw telling Walker beer he loves him like just as a Dodgers fan it was emotional reading your recap so I just wanted to say off the top thank you for that well I appreciate you saying that you’re too kind uh let’s talk World Series real quick and then we’ll get into some offseason stuff now that we’ve had a few weeks to reflect on it obviously you were not only there you were kind of in the midst of it with relationships and covering all these games what’s the lasting memory takeaway that that you think back most fondly on um from a few weeks ago I think it’s just like how much of a switch kind of flipped in that team especially after being down 2-1 in that DS I think once they got past the Padres everything was kind of you don’t want to say skating because obviously the Mets were a hot red hot team really talented Riding High the Yankees obviously very talented but it just felt like all right they got past the Padre like they the team felt like they collectively exhaled after that point and sort of rode that from there on and I think there was like a little bit of at least watching sort of seeing like oh there’s a lot of parallels to 2021 where they got past the Giants and they exhale and they kind of run out of gas against the Braves that never happened uh even with all the injuries even with anything that happened uh yeah I mean it was it was remarkable to see how they kept finding a way and obviously with all the injuries and stuff like that they still just managed to kind of overwhel teams in different ways different winning in different ways each time yeah uh was when you said that it reminds me of the mookie bets podcast that is now obviously Infamous and Dodgers fandom uh I’m curious for a beat reporter when you get a chance to watch or listen to something like that I mean is that all information that you’re kind of like well I knew this but I couldn’t necessarily write it or are you learning things along the way with those guys oh there’s some of it was like yeah you like you learn this you can’t really write it or like you feel it but you can’t really get them to say on the record cuz they’re in the middle of it and you sure understand like and there’s also some stuff that you learn obviously and uh the thing about prior about uh Mark Walker beer not telling Mark Prior he had thrown I kind of heard that like Walker when I asked him about it like didn’t say at the time obviously he said it then but yeah some of that’s like stuff where like if you you’re not you’re not there obviously you’re not there in any of the meetings and anything like that but like you could sort of get a sense for how guys are what when things are a little bit different like that just because you’re around them every single day so yeah you can get yeah hearing it vocalized different reading your story and then hearing that quote from Walker buer it just makes me appreciate I think the chaos of those moments because you have your story which is a conversation with Andrew Freedman where Andrew fredman apparently is aware of what’s happening and engaged with Walker beer and yet Mark Prior the pitching coach who’s in The Dugout maybe is is disconnected from everything that’s happening again I I can’t say it other than any any other way but it makes me appreciate the chaos of these moments and yet the World Series rests on how that moment plays out yeah and yeah the only reason why Andrew Freeman knew is because he was down in the clubhous trying to organize how to get Yosh Moto home one live flat seat to get him home early everything like that and Walker wheer walks in through the wait room and they sort have the conversation yeah like it’s all like random circumstances a lot of stuff is like flying around in those moments it’s organized chaos it was I love it well hey it worked out uh let’s do this I’ve got a six-pack of questions with you uh again this is Fabi and ardia of the athletic let’s start with the the question that is overhanging all of Major League Baseball and I’ll ask it in a Dodgers specific way uh is the wano Dodgers Pursuit real we know is let me ask it this way is this more than the Dodgers are always going to be at least interested engaging information on the top guys or are the Dodgers actually pursuing Wan sto I think they’re pursuing him but also like mostly staying engaged I think there it’s like a slight tear between the two like there is a need for Juan stto or a corner Outfield right now on the roster if you look at it they need at least one corner outfielder with mooki bets moving back to the infield but tcar hernandz currently a free agent uh so juano does make a lot of sense there do I think that that and do I think the Dodgers have the resources to spend at the top of the market this winter yes they do they they seem like they definitely do uh just based off the fact that they’re also meeting with Blake Snell like they’re they’re clearly engaged at the top of the market um do I think it’s realistic that he lands in Los Angeles I don’t think it happens uh obviously I think the two New York team or The Logical Landing spots there and then obviously the Dodgers like to sort of hang around just in case the market collapses or in case some he decides to like their kind of weird unorthodox offer uh but that doesn’t happen all that often and I don’t expect it to happen here yeah do you think this is going to be one of those hey we’ll give you three years and $160 million type contract offers is what they end up making to to woto or do you think it’s just simply no offers actually made and you know know with two months from now nothing is materialized they sort of swoop in as the uh as as the guy to save people from uh the bad offers of everybody else the way the Dodgers historically have treated is like they sort of give you like a suite of options like all right here’s like this weird structure like here there’s this structure there’s this with all these deferrals and like that and like they did that with Yamoto he took the one that had no deferrals uh otan brought them the deferrals option but also teoscar Hernandez took the option that had referrals but had more guaranteed money and also that way it more money than what the qualifying offer would have been uh so like it all kind of like they try to tailor it to what the player might want but obviously they don’t know until like they put the offer in front of them so giving them a bunch of different Suites of offers I think I’m sure one of them will be like one of those like shortterm high a ones or ones with like a huge opt out early uh but yeah I I think that’ll give him a bunch of different options and I’m sure that Steve Cohen will be very tuned to whatever that is and throw extra zeros at the end of it is there a world where Juan stto and teoscar Hernandez are both Dodgers next year or do you think the Dodgers are sort of choosing between those two that would be difficult financially with the fact that they also need to add starting pitching so I feel like that would be a little bit far-fetched but uh I think that both of them are still very high on their radar when it comes to Corner Outfield like I think those are the two best corner outfielders on the market you can make a case for Anthony santand there as well but like that that’s the peak of The Hitting Market arguably with along with Willie adamus and maybe Pete Alonzo so like you you really they really are a tune there at the top there but I think it’s probably matter of getting one of those guys and maybe attacking starting pitching and one last thing on the sto teoscar piece do you get the sense that teoscar signing will come after Wan sto’s signing like our teams including the Dodgers going to wait to see what Wan stto does before doing anything on the teoscar front I I originally thought be the off season but I got a sense like he wants to have T Herz wants the free agency to a little bit quicker obviously than last year when he was kind of waiting around for a multi-year deal and didn’t get a really appetizing one so he signed in January I think he wants to sign sooner rather than later I think he’s made clear his priorities to sign in LA but obviously there is a lot of interest uh Red Sox and Orioles make a lot of sense for T Hernandez even the Yankees if they don’t resign stto uh he makes a lot of sense there or the Mets if they don’t sign stto so like there is some logic to waiting out stto and then signing for elsewhere but like I think he wants to get a deal done just how free agency went last year for him yeah uh let me let me go along those lines and ask the second question which is are the Dodgers really going to pay top dollar for starting pitching and the reason I ask is because you mentioned T Oscar being motivated to sign most quickly there’s a gentleman that you mentioned earlier in this interview Blake Snell is one of the top starting pitching names out there a guy the Dodgers have been connected to also a guy who kind of waited and waited and waited a year ago and never got got what he wanted so I wonder if Blake Snell’s going to be a guy that that tries to sign in the next month and a half or so because he doesn’t want to wait around and try and get the extra few dollars which leads me to are the Dodgers really going to be swimming in the waters of these top three guys I think they’ll be trying to for sure I think also the fact that Roki saki won’t be posted or able to sign it until after January 15th kind of allows like all right we can focus on that once he’s actually posted let’s focus on trying to get a lot our business done here because whether or not you sign him doesn’t change your budget at all yeah uh so I I think they’re definitely be interested in operating sou the market I’m curious to see what the timeline is because two of the top three starters on the market are represented by Scott Boris he’s typically a guy who likes to sequence some of his guys when they sign just to sort of be able to use them off of each other you set the a benchmark for the next guy to sort of clear and stuff like that so I’m curious to see in what order Corbin Burns and Blake sell sign and also where that goes in relation to Max freed who’s another guy who makes sense for the Dodgers uh but yeah there has been interest in Blake now for quite some time they’ve already met with him um they were made L push from last off season uh if the Giants would have been willing to trade with the Dodgers they would have absolutely been interested at this year’s deadline uh so like he’s a guy that has been high on the radar for a long time was a guy who was drafted by none other than Andrew Freeman so makes a lot of sense I’m not trying to make too many assumptions or put you in a spot it it it sounds like Blake Snell is the guy the Dodgers are the most interested in of these three is that a fair sort of assessment of the situation I think he’s the guy that they’ve had the longest track record of interest in I think that’s the way to put it because obviously Max Freed’s been Atlanta for so long there’s been multiple opportunities to sort of make go out and get a Blake now so that sort of makes it uh interested but also they showed interest in the trade market for for Corbin Burns last winter as well uh and Brewers didn’t seem willing to move until like right before spring training and they just flipped him to the orol so yeah okay uh you mentioned Roki Sasaki let’s go to that one um this has been such a fascinating story to me because most of what I’ve read nationally feels like people that are repeating the same sort of things but I I don’t always understand if there’s being sourced information or if people are just repeating and making the same assumptions as everyone else which is oh the Dodgers always get guys like this and so surely it’s the Dodgers and that kind of thing like what can you tell us is real about the Dodgers and their connection to Roki Sasaki what’s real is Dodgers are very interested in Roki saki that’s very real they’ve been over there to see him quite a few times like they uh there’s we’ve all seen the video of Andre Freeman sort of shaking hands with him and that like he they’ve had interest in him for a while I think what we don’t know obviously is what rookie saki wants at the end of the day like we that’s GNA steer where he wants to go because I don’t think obviously Money Matters and St like that but like the difference between $5 million bonus and $7 million bonus for where you want to go where you want to be in Player Development and everything like that like we don’t know how he’s gonna value that we don’t know how he’s gonna value whether having Yamoto and Otani on his team is gonna be a good thing where it’s GNA steer him like all right I want to be teammates with these guys they they’re obviously really good like they’ll help me get comfortable Dodgers have integrated Japanese sport players before or does he want to do his own thing or does he want to be teammates with someone else who’s he’s with the samurai Japan and UD darish with Padres is like there’s so much of this we don’t really know from his perspective so I feel like there’s a lot of like trying to fill in the blanks there but I think the Dodgers obviously would be very interested in there but we don’t really know what Roki saki wants so do would I be surprised the Dodgers sign him abs like no but like am I sort of like everyone else like yes they’re gonna sign him they’re definitely sign I I I just can’t really say that do you have a sense of where the Dodgers are at financially with their 2025 International free agency budget I mean it’s a lot of speculation with all these teams yes we know what the budgets are we also know that most of these deals are agreed to well in advance do you have any sense have you heard from anybody on the Dodger side as far as if they have money set aside for Sasaki I don’t have a strong sense for that but also I know obviously you can still trade for more pool money the Dodgers are pretty capped out like what they could even get to even if they didn’t have any commitments so like the end of the day if he’s going to land in Los Angeles it’s not necessarily going to be because of the bonus money it’s going to be because of everything else so yeah like that I think that’s the big thing with him signing January 15th as opposed to in the 2024 cycle that like where the Dodgers still have the most money available like it’s not going to come down to like a matter of a couple million It’s Gonna Come matter and come down to everything else I think yeah I obviously the Dodgers are a big optionality team was there any sort of surprise SL disappointment when it sort of became clear that he was going to post in 2025 or do you get the sense they kind of expected this was how it was going to play out I I’m not sure how they felt about like for me like I didn’t see that why there was any reason for Sasaki unless like he just knew where he wanted to go there was no reason for him to not wait because then he you could theoretically get more money and there’s more teams involved and everything like that it’s like might as well drive up the market but yeah I I I don’t know I’m sure I’m sure the Dodgers would like to been in position where they had the most pool money to offer and addition to everything else but like I don’t know how much it necessarily moves the needle one way or another yeah okay let’s go number four topic here walker buer uh a free agent a free agent that every Dodgers fan is hoping is quickly not a free agent and signed with the Dodgers here’s kind of my question on this and we’ve been kicking it around on our show obviously um you’ve got more access with a guy like teoscar Hernandez as you said he has made it abundantly clear that he wants to be a Dodger next year maybe only Clayton Kershaw has made it more clear what team he hopes to play for next season with Walker be obviously long-term relationship with the Dodgers drafted and developed by the Dodgers has one world series with the Dodgers all of that we also know that this past season was really difficult for him there were times when he was away from the team um sort of getting coaching that kind of thing what’s your sense on the state of the relationship between the Dodgers organization and Walker beer is there anything in there that makes you think you know maybe he’d like to try something new I I think if he wants to try something new it’s just because the opportunities there like the money’s there or the a chance to pitch for contender for more money than the Dodgers or offerings there I I feel like there is a definitely still a good relationship between the Dodgers and Walker beer like he said he would like to be back I think a lot of him leaving the team he tried making like very clear at the time and tried has tried making very clear sense like was not anything to do with like not liking the organization or not liking the pitching infrastructure or anything that there he just was very much like in a crisis a confidence type of spot where he just needed to like get away from all the pressures of everything like that coming back and try to just figure something out obviously came back didn’t quite work nothing really quite clicked until October but like he still obviously has good relationships with people there obviously has a connection to the city and now he won two World Series with Los Angeles and is a position where like clayon khaw put it like he’s a he’s Eton Dodger l forever regardless of if he leaves or if he comes back but I think it’s just a matter of I think it’s a matter obviously what the market looks like uh I know Mark K the manager of the A’s already said that he doesn’t want to pitch in Sacramento which was not surprising just considering a guy who says like the lights were what flipped him on I don’t think the lights in Sacramento would do that do they have lights are we even sure they have lights in Sacramento are they just playing Day games out there what are they doing they do have lights I don’t know how if they’re mjor leag quality yet I don’t know if they’re upgrading them this win or not but yeah it wasn’t surprising that he wouldn’t want to pitch in uh Sacramento but like there’s other teams I’m sure that are be interested in starting pitching that he would make a lot of sense for whether it be like the Yankees or the Atlanta Braves and those were teams that like are sort of positioned like the Dodgers where they’re going to be contending where they have good track records and pitching development so like I think it’s going to matter on what the market ultimately looks like but I feel like there’s not like try not to read too much into like him leaving the team this summer I think that has a lot more to do with sort of himself and sort of how he felt about things as opposed to like a rift between him and the organization love that love that with with teoscar and Walker beer both do you kind of get the sense that the Dodgers will have the last opportunity to like match deals beat deals like do you feel like that’s where those two relationships are at that those guys want to be back and as long as the money is same or close that that the Dodgers would have sort of the the advantage I feel like would say Oscar I like that’ be the case for sure he’s kind of said like it’s my priority to be back here uh ber I don’t know I’m sure I’m sure there’ll be some of it where it’s like all right like here’s what’s out there type thing but like I’m not sure if it’s like the right to last refusal or anything like that but but’s say like it seems very obvious that he wants to be back at Los Angeles yeah okay uh let’s shift to the position player side one of the announcements that the Dodgers have made this offseason is mie Betts will be moving back to the infield I think the first question a lot of people asked was what in the world does this mean for Gavin Lux as far as his future with the organization that was the piece that surprised me because when you just come out and publicly announced that mookie bets is moving back to the infield it feels like it puts a guy like Lux in a weird spot where just about everybody’s doing the same math which is are they really going to put mooki back at shortstop and if not then what does this mean for Gavin luck so what do you know and and what do you sense on that front yeah that was kind of the question for Brandon Gomes immediately after he said that I was like what do this me for Gavin Lux uh he didn’t really have a real straightforward answer I think part of it because it’s still like November like there’s a lot of things that can very much change like uh injuries that can happen or different moves that can happen or oh they intended to move mukie bets back to the same field but like okay they managed to land a splash like Willie doas for example at Short Stop and it just makes more sense to keep him back in the Outfield I think the hope is for him for rookie BS to be in the infield what that looks like uh we don’t no obviously maybe he would do better at Short Stop if he’s there spending an entire offseason working at the position as opposed to two weeks before Korea uh so maybe that helps or maybe there’s a platoon situation at second base where like maybe against right-handed pitching mookie bets is a short stop against left-and pitching he’s at second base uh so Gavin Lux splits against left-and pitching still aren’t great uh there’s scenarios where that works out uh so I think it’s still very early but yeah like there is definitely a domino effect uh I think Ken Rosenfeld Ro but like it just doesn’t necessarily rule them out on a Willie doas but I don’t know how likely a will adamus was for them anyways even though they’ve had interest in him for years at this point I don’t know how much they really were heavy in the market they’ll definitely be around in that market but I feel like they’re not going to put all their eggs in that basket uh so yeah I think that’s something where like it’s a domino effect but we’ll see what the r the market plays out I I feel like there’s a lot still to be like that will still sort itself out when it comes to this off season when it comes to that but yeah it was definitely an interesting wrinkle to throw right on top of it for the second straight off season what do do you have a sense of what the Dodgers believe and think about Gavin Lux obviously a bizarre season where he was one of the worst players in baseball for half of the season and then became one of the best hitters in baseball for the second half of the season I think there’s an optimistic view of look he missed an entire season took him a few months to get ready and then hey he kind of hit you know probably above above reality but still at a place like we used to think this guy was going to be a really good hitter and he hit like a really good hitter and yes he’s not playing shortstop or is it the flip side of it’s a guy who for the most part hasn’t been hasn’t lived up to expectations wasn’t able to make it work at shortstop and that they might feel like his value lies elsewhere like what do the Dodgers actually think about Gavin Lux I think their accents have shown like they’ve been on the very high side on Gavin Lux for long long time like the fact that they tried to make him Short Stop two straight years and obviously neither year it worked out first year he got hurt last year obviously the throwing issues kind of cropped up and then they just felt it was best for everything to sort of move him to second base I think what they saw maybe and got out of him in September October is maybe like a good semblance of what he is which is like a solid hitter maybe like sort of like what he was in 2022 but with a little bit more power because he started swinging more aggressively sort of trusting it trusting his what he kind of it’s kind of like a mix between what he got into in 2022 is like which was kind of like slap hit or kind of go shoot for high average and what he wasn’t 2019 as a prospect when he he hit all those home runs in the juice ball era so like trying to find a mix in the middle there where you’re kind of hoping for like 780 800 Ops from the left side with good second base defense like a def at second base like he’s a good Defender I don’t think he’s a gold glove or anything like that but I also don’t think he’s a bad Defender I don’t think the throwing issues are as much of an issue with second base like that’s a valuable player to have uh at second base there especially under clip control which he is so like there’s definitely value there I don’t think they’re like actively seeking to trade him but if if they sort of need to go pursue a gck crochet for example or need to go and try to find starting pitching or Corner Outfield and that’s a way that’s enough another lever they can pull I don’t think it’s the one that are going to be actively pulling but like the fact that Muk bets is in the and Gavin Lux his value is restored a little bit kind of helps the Dodgers out there is crochet a guy that the Dodgers are interested in yeah I mean they had all interested him uh last uh last summer and obviously I think the the implication was one of those talks all right let’s pick this up again in the winter his crochet still makes a lot of sense for all the same reasons makes more sense for the White Soxs probably move him as much as like it was perplexing at the time that they didn’t move Robert or crochet especially made a little more sense to hold on to just because he’s a starting pitcher pitching value probably goes up a little bit more in the winter as opposed to in the summer but yeah I I feel like there’s definitely some interest there okay last question kind of a different one couple of the young guys that the Dodgers have on the 40-man roster three different players in particular I’m curious about and these guys are in very different places in their tenure with the Dodgers all three are presumably outfielders Dalton rushing one of the top prospects if not the top prospect makes the move to left field uh in Triple A you got Andy PES who came up this season a little bit of a roller coaster season but at the end of the day offensively looks to be the guy that everyone expected even if defensively maybe Center Field’s not his landing spot and then you have James outman who two years ago was one of the better rookies in baseball slumps off comes up this year struggles again so three guys may be headed in different directions but what do you sense is the future for each of these three guys in 2025 with the Dodgers yeah rushing is interesting especially at catcher because obviously there’s three guys on the four man with big league experience in front of them with Will Smith Austin Barnes and Hunter fuia I feel like they still want to have want to have him play behind the plate a little bit which I I would be wouldn’t be surprised if he starts season Triple A again uh sort of gets some time have the plate but also gets some time left field refines there I think he’s definitely an option uh in the corners if they especially if they don’t have the corner Outfield off season that they kind of anticipated having or they sort of don’t get an established guy like aotto or tasar Hernandez maybe they had a veteran they sort of have Dalton rushian there kind of waiting R in the wings to play a corner I think andyp has an everyday player next year at least start of the Season uh just uh you’re right I don’t think Center Fields his natural position just because the the reads weren’t great but his arm is which plays a lot better in a corner especially in right feel like that that’s kind of like the landing spot for him next season is left or right field uh can sort of Bounce in especially against left hand pitching and then outman yeah I mean I think two years ago was a little bit of a surprise to have production he did especially to have the midseason struggles he did but then bounce back in September because I think when you saw the mid-season struggles all right this is just the profile he’s always kind of had he’s hit throughout the minors but the swing Miss was always a problem uh there was always a lot of rigidity to his swing even if he tried getting rid of some of it there’s always kind of that in there that’s just kind of who you are as a player um and you saw that kind of play up again last season so I think there might be a little bit more to sort of take out from uh maybe what he was second half of 2023 where he was uh striking out less often maybe sacrificing a little bit of power for that but like that sort of midpoint was still a productive player uh if he can sort of gets back to that obviously that helps the daughters but I I don’t see him as at least start the season as I other maybe like a depth option maybe the guy who makes the opening day roster as like a fourth out Fielder sort of bounce around a little bit but like uh we’ll see obviously what the Dodgers rest of the offseason looks like in terms of acquiring out fielders love it love it well faban we appreciate you thank you for your time and your Insight uh I enjoy uh enjoy a few days off around Thanksgiving and you know who know who knows when all these signings are going to happen that’s I guess both the the blessing and the curse of Major League Baseball’s off season is that uh it feels like a lot of hurry up and wait around here yes absolutely I I I think Otani signed the day after I was at a wedding last year I think Yoto sign as I was flying uh flying for the holidays like you never know when this stuff happens so I’ll be ready for it love it well keep up the great work thank
