e good morning everybody I’m Bruce Howard voice of the golden hurricane and today of course we had a historic day and a new era for University of T football weighted to have you us here today welcome all of those that are watching YouTube ESPN of com micone so that all the folks are AC country without further ado welome years a lot of turmoil College athletics we believe that college football is the signature program of any athletic department we also believe that we sign stat small school power acemic can on the I believe we have a great coach succeed in the community in theom as well as very excited part of our revitalization of Athletics our recommitment if you will to Athletics is having a great athletic excited you here EXC mic good morning it’s a great day to be a golden hurricane and I can’t wait to introduce coach but before I do that I’d like to thank a few people first president Carson our board Marsh of cloud and trustee Mike case for their leadership and support a successful football program must have great support at the top and they have been absolutely incredible I want to thank coach Switzer for the job that he has done as the interim coach he brought great energy and excitement to the program has been very helpful during this transition period I think we have some players in the back I want to thank our players um for their patience for maturity and communication throughout this process I know this is a hard time things like this happen that as well as our uh thanks to our staff we have a number of staff that played a big part in this transition I want to thank them Jason Luke Rebecca Jared Danny KJ especially Joe Joe was right next to me during the entire search while also managing the football program on a daily basis he’s a huge part of what we do and we’re grateful to have as I said it’s an exciting day for Tulsa and not just for the football program but the entire University and the City of Tulsa we understand the importance of the football program and the impact that it has on our campus and our community and our job is to build a program that everybody can be proud of this program has great history Hall of Fame players championship teams and has produced great memories for our alumni fans and our job is to get the program back to this level number four our goal will be to win championships in the American confence and that takes a couple of key things number one alignment from the board to president Carson to Athletics and we have great alignment here number two a championship level infrastructure that is Staff salary pool facilities operating budget and in today’s world player compensation and we will provide this at a high level and last and most importantly a great head coach and that’s why we’re here today uh we had a very extensive search and a thorough process I spoke with a lot of people coaches former players agents and people that I really trust in this business to build a great pool of candidates to start there was great interest in this job and it was validation to what we believe that this is a great job and you can win at a high level here we interviewed a lot of coaches and it became very clear that Trey lamb was the perfect fit for us first he’s a great person has a great family he and his family Carter Olivia and Drew will be great representatives of this University and the community he’s grown up in a football family his grandfather’s a Hall of Fame coach his dad’s a coach his uncle is a coach he’s been around great football his entire life he’s extremely well respected by coaches and had incredible references from some of the best coaches in the business he was a great player as a quarterback in college and knows what it’s like from a player perspective and I think that’s helpful in this job and I think most importantly he has great experience for this job one he has a proven track record of success as a head coach and has done it at several stops he won championships he understands what that takes and he has done it sitting in the head coach’s chair he has won at levels that programs have not won before and to me that’s the mark of a great coach and he has led significant turnarounds at multip stops and was able to do it quickly and that will be our goal here at tuls he’s a great offensive mind has had a lot of success running high powered offenses plays an exciting brand of football that I think our fans will really enjoy he understands the mechanics of building a rer in today’s environment transfer portal ner management and has done it from the head co SE there’s a lot that goes into that now he has valuable experience managing that part of the job and last we are philosophically aligned on what it takes to build a championship team the team must be built on the right things a culture of toughness discipline accountability and development so as we went through the process it became very clear that coach lamb was the perfect fit for Tulsa this time and we’re excited to welcome him and his family to the university so please help me welcome your new head football coach l all right thank you all very much thank you all very much for being here um didn’t know you’re gonna hire a 58 coach did you um first of all I want to thank my wife my beautiful wife Carter um you know she gets that she’s been in this business for a few years now and um she’s my rock she’s my Foundation she allows me to do what I want to do uh we we flew on a airplane yesterday up here and my daughters Olivia and Drew have never flown before and uh we were on a learfield private jet so um I’m going to have to Humble them over the next coming weeks of what commercial flights are like they think uh they think that’s what flying is like so Mr case thank you so much for providing that for us and getting us up here quickly so we can start recruiting um president Carson thank you uh for trusting me one thing you told me when we met is you want to do it the right way that stood out to me student athletes still come first and uh you look me in the eye and said to much as given much is expected so if you’re going to give us the resources to succeed there’s an expectation to win championships and I want to do that immediately thank you for that Marshall McLoud gave me a lot of information about the University of Tulsa what it’s built on um in the search process was huge thank you and then Justin thank you um wouldn’t be here without you obviously you you have the it Factor you know as a coach sometimes you can just point out some guys some players some people just have it you can’t really put your finger on it but you want to follow them and um I appreciate you and and I want to follow you and and I think you or or what this place needed and it’s been a jolt of energy for me to be around you U Joe Fields has been awesome consumate professional does a heck of a job and and Justin’s hired an awesome staff and Joe’s just just going to be a rock star um Rebecca Park Hill has set up my family with travel and everything and and she’s been awesome through this whole process and you know we have some ties to some schools we’ve worked at before and she’s really helped us in our transition Luke hillan U who’s going over the top to make me feel comfortable transition um Jason Malay who’s done the media and the pictures and the photos and everything I I thank you for what you do for this place um I appreciate you and then our Board of Trustees thank you so much for for trusting me with this job I I don’t take it lightly I want to make sure every day when my feet Hit the Floor I’m working for this University I’m working for this football program and we’re going to get it fixed and that’s going to start today I can promise you that that’s a promise um coach Switzer thank you for what you did man that’s that’s uh what you did not easy and you held this group together you recruited a great recruiting class you and the staff uh put your best foot forward and and this is not an easy situation for you guys and I I greatly appreciate um what you did and and I mean that um I’m excited you know that that’s one word to EXC describe where I’m at right now like I’m I can’t sleep I’ve been here a couple nights and and I am excited to lead this football program and be the front porch of this University I am impressed by the team I was able to meet with a team yesterday both as a team and with position groups uh this team is close-knit and they care about Tulsa uh I want them to be able to wear their sweatshirts and their gear around campus and be proud uh for where they’re at I want to bring winning back to this program so that they can have that and I looked them in the eye yesterday I said you guys are doing thing a lot of a lot of things well I think the culture is decent I think they like each other um we got to get back to believing we can win football games so incredibly excited about the team we are already have you know this I think we got some really good pieces in place um the community of Tulsa is important and and I’ve that’s been driven home to me by the leadership in this in this room and I can promise you you’re not going to have a coach on this campus that will get out in the community more than me I want to be at events I want to speak at anything I can speak at this is a large city but it’s about the perfect size from what I’ve been told I’ve been here for 48 hours but um I want to be in this community on a weekly basis like that is important to me I want you guys to understand that I want the media to understand that that is my job like that is my job that’s part of this job and I want to do that for you um and I want to be available to you uh tradition of Excellence I’m excited about that like this place is 182 NFL picks U five New Year’s bowl games 35 conference championships um like some people have no idea because of recent success may not have been there but like this place has got a ton of tradition and when you walk up and down the Halls you know in the case Athletics Center you see that and that that puts some put some fire in my belly to go to go get this thing right and get it right in a hurry so just the former players former coaches man like you laid the groundwork we’re just trying to finish this thing off and make you proud um uh what’s my vision okay how are we going to get this done you know number one Justin said I want to win fast okay like we’re we’re we’re this is not a complete rebuild I I firmly believe we can come in here year one and make it to a bowl game that’s the expectation and in today’s today’s world of college football we’re being given the resources we’re be we’ve been given there’s no reason this should take three years like it used to that’s not that’s not the process that’s not how this is going to work um bowl games that’s that’s going to be an expectation one of the reasons I took this job I want to coach in bowl games I want our players to play in bowl games it’s important to me that should be an expectation on a yearly basis every year American conference championships one of the greatest conferences in all college football the greatest group of five conference in the country the expectations is to play and compete in that Championship Game on a consistent basis and compete for a spot in the college football playoff sounds crazy you may call me crazy that’s not far-fetched I believe that can be done at tulson I believe that with my whole heart I’m not just giving you some coach speak it is very possible um my staff okay I’ve got a great plan there I’m going to hire at least one guy on my staff that’s been a group of five head coach that I can lean on I’m going to hire at least six to seven guys who have experience recruiting Texas and Oklahoma it is important that we take care of Oklahoma first I want to get the best players in this city not not just the average ones I want to make sure we’re taking care of that we could we could take a van or a bus and drive four hours around Tulsa and have the greatest team in the league I believe that one of the reasons I took this job we can go to Dallas Louisiana Arkansas Oklahoma East Texas and we can have a great football team and and we’re going to do that and I’m going to recruit coaches that can recruit those areas um I also have five coaches that I’m going to hire that have American Athletic Conference experience and recent experience I think that’s important this is a tough League to defend you got a lot of different offenses with triple option spread air raid a lot of different styles of Defense coaching matters and and obviously recruiting matters coaching still matters we got to make sure we hire the right guys in the building and get them in the right spots that’s important um how are we going to do this you know number one I want to inject joy and fun back into our program I think our players right now are a little beaten down um and they’ve lost a couple years in a row like I told them yesterday like you got into this sport because you wanted to have fun I want you to enjoy coming to work I want you to enjoy the environment that we’re going to create on a daily basis does that that mean it’s all going to be sunshine and rainbows and it’s it’s all just happy gol Lucky Country Club heck no we’re going to keep them and hold them accountable we’re going to do things the right way and we’re going to do things that creates winning but at the same time man your 10-year-old self playing football in the backyard is what I want to see I want to see you guys have fun again and we’re going to do that um recruit develop and retain in that order we got to recruit Talent we got to develop Talent we got to retain Talent bottom line we can talk about all the ways to do it we got we’re not going to make excuses okay we’re not going to make money excuses Financial excuses we’ve been given what we’ve been given and we’ve been given plenty plenty to be successful in this league I will get that done without making excuses um and then the last thing I told the guys yesterday man just daily habits if we can just create great habits on a daily basis with our team with our coaches I got to leave first I got to wake up in the morning with a fire in my belly with an energy in my belly to go sit in that staff meeting at 7 a.m. they got to F it and then they got to get it through the team if we can start creating those habits from day one you can’t go backwards you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube we got to set the standard now of what we want that to look like um and we got to start believing there’s got to be a Le belief in this fan base belief in this coaching staff belief in our building belief in this community and I realize what we’re dealing with we’ve lost some games like we we’ve created a habits of losing we got to get that out of here energy vampires got to go so if you’re not going to get on the B wagon now don’t call me in 3 years when it’s rolling like let’s get that fixed now let’s make sure you believe we can get it done I believe we can get it done our team believes we can get it done our Administration believes we can get it done belief is powerful the power of the Mind the power of belief is powerful so make sure we’re doing that um you know last little story I’ll tell my dad Hall of Fame head coach in high school Uncle coached in college for several different places the grand Ed coach in college and high school I was born um on a Friday night in September my dad’s first head coaching job was at Cartersville High School in Georgia and their mascot was a purple hurricane so it has come full circle and now I’m a golden hurricane and I think God had a hand in that fate had a hand in that but I I’m so excited to be here I can’t tell you how thankful I am for the opportunity um I’m going to make this work we’re going to make this work and we got to do it all together I know this is the front porch of University I’m the biggest billboard walking around our team is the biggest billboard walking around we’re going to do things the right way but winning matters if it doesn’t associate with winning I don’t want to see it so let’s get that fixed let’s make sure we start winning and stop losing and Rain came thank youall we as we get ready for the press conference portion we’re going to move Mo a table out coach will be at the table along with Justin as well while we do that again a reminder if you’re part of the media please identify yourself and your outlet and then ask your question but wait until you have a microphone start with if both of you would this channel to CNBC affiliate toet um Justin said that your experience suits you well for this job I’m wondering why you think that would be yeah I think you’re taking over a program has struggled the last couple years last few years to be honest and um you know my track record of turning turning around two programs that were really struggling and winning at places where it’s hard to win um I think give me an advantage and then the people have UC here in my opinion have been young offensive coaches you look back at the history of C football I think Young offensive coaches had success and I think that’s what he was looking for a guy who’s been in the chair and being able to navigate the nil landscape and the roster management landscape key ditto I think it’s hard to do this job when you don’t have any experience in the chair for this job so I just had there’s tremendous value and Pro Hills mersh contract Neti let’s let’s go eight and four first before we start talking about that um no I love golf I think it’s great to get out there for a few hours my only hobby I don’t really fish home but I enjoy it my wife lets me do it I was raised in family with golfers heard that do a lot of golf I enjoy getting out there and meeting people and raising money and it’s a good four hours to get away from do you have plans yes meeting with I guess what 12 15 guys today between one and three I met with about four to six yesterday and some of them got back out of it we’re having conversations ongoing but yes absolutely I think some guys got in test the waters but I’ll tell you this I can’t at least two two to three guys I talked to yesterday it was important fore they wanted a degree and that goes a long way in this area and that degree means a lot to these kids and I thought that was powerful my Jeremy Poppin University Tulsa radio network and new on 6 both of you had mentioned philosophy and Alignment can you go a little bit further in depth about what both of those mean to you and why this why you feel like this works yeah I think um no matter style of you have no matter that come down are the I believe in that so when we know Bas phos that doesn’t matter organ in Whata football Thats So I think it was important at don’t think no the same thing like I think he’s got a great charismatic personality like I like being around I want to I want to take but you know like what he said the things that matter in winning still carry over no matter what style of play you are what system you’re running but philosophically a lot ofou respect teams ATT to me to have uh Larry Larry Lewis Inside Sports could you just describe your philosophy your offensive philosophy describe to the fans what they’re going to see yeah we’re a spread system um you know I think at our core we want to spread you out to run the ball our quarterback is is very much like a point guard you know I tell our guys all the time you know we’re not necessar looking for LeBron James quarterback we’re looking for Ray Rondo guy that can distribute the ball play point guard not make mistakes that position are putting a high premium on speed where we’re located you know we may not always have the biggest and best offensive we can running tight high now the positions of need immediately oine I don’t care what system you’re run you need to be good at those two positions in quarter so those are some driving factors in winning number two quarterback play number three in my opinion is line of scage we’ve got a lot of line of scage guys in the portal we very thin right there we got to go get some guys TJ with the ABC here coach wel you mentioned belief a lot how do you go about instilling belief is there a process in order to do that how does that how do you do that you need to taste some success early right every one of these jobs I’ve had early in the good happened to that bunch I think sometimes when you’re at a place that’s been losing I talked to the players about this yesterday in a game was get away we got completely remove that mentality from these guys every play is it own let’s break it down into really small tasks and let’s execute one task at a time and then look up at the scoreboard late game like we scoreboard watching here and if one or two things go bad started and it just got away so I think obvious got players and get some Talent here immediately but just a belief being able to let’s not look at score one little at a time it’s take I don’t know how look I I’m not like bragging here but I had been talking with some other schools just to be honest I’m not going to mention those schools at this level um tuls has won before and they’ve done it number after I our leadership is here it’s a line and they told me what I needed in person to my face you know a lot of a lot of people you know tell you that over the phone just be a look those guys the that me get together goes a long way thirding J I know how important the president May big big deciding the city itself is awesome the recruiting ferle base is awesome and the people me in the first few days to know I certainly appreciate it and those the main factors yre Barry tram with Tulsa World these days it’s very difficult maybe impossible to build a program over a number of years you’re really just building a team year to year what is your plan for building the team immediately and then year two doing it again I disagree with you uh in in a sense um this will never be a football Factory you know something president Caron talked about but you know where college football’s going we want to make sure we’re positioning ourselves in the next five to 10 years to be in the right group of schools that we’re competing with and we’re going to do that but as far as rebuilding a roster are we going to lose some guys to the power five each year power four each year absolutely now that number doesn’t need to be 20 to 30 but if it’s in the 5 six seven range that’s okay and a fan base and media doesn’t need to freak out when it happens like that’s where we’re at I told the Players yesterday everybody in this rooms every job’s up for grabs including mine I get fired I don’t do a good job side but I still think the student athlete model and culture and relationship still matters is there a transactional piece to it for sure we going to and we will make sure we get those guys replaced with good players that want to be here want to get a thank for coming yeah appreciate thank you very much for coming
