stiffest test of the season for Florida who comes in 10 and0 but hasn’t beaten that kind of high-end competition yet this season UNC is looking to build some momentum after a a slow start of their own at at six and four Riley let’s talk about the Tar Heels first because they are your Tar Heels what do they need to do to win this game Ralph I’m nervous man I’m nervous I think Florida yes I I’m like just looking at Florida they have such they play through their bigs so well just with it’s not just that they’re really good on the offensive glass it’s that all their bigs are skilled and can can I mean maybe less so chelu but Sam Alexis Thomas Hal Alex Condon you trust all of those guys making decisions at the top of the key which just helps open up the rest of the offense and I think uncc’s bigs have been really have really struggled in space they’ve kind of struggled up up and down the court but in particularly on the defensive end guarden in space hasn’t been the strength of really any big on this roster to where when you ask what does Carolina need to to do I think it just has to is as simple as like their their backourt has to probably combine for 60 points if I had to guess you want to get 60-ish points out of cadu RJ Seth and Ian Jackson those four have to be the ones doing the heavy lifting to sort of mitigate some of the advantage that Florida will have on the interior I know Florida has really good guards as well but I think if Carolina wants to win this game and stay undefeated in the Jumpman Invitational they need like RJ Davis can’t have a a six for 18 night he’s got to be closer like I don’t know 10 for TW like 10 made field goals between 40 to 50% from the field um and he’s probably going to need to hit four or five threes you’re probably going to need Seth Trimble to have close to 20 as well what do you make of RJ struggling because his shooting percentages are as low as they’ve been they’re like mirroring his freshman season which not good it’s really odd to see Ralph like I was at the the game against Lal this past Saturday I think he shot two for six from Beyond The Arc and it’s I mean you can tell which ones are going in as soon as they leave his hands like that he’s had he’s been money nearly from the logo like dead straight on like he he can pull up wherever if it’s like uh from the top top of the key extended to to the logo essentially he’s still money there but but anytime he’s been taking these off the dribble threes off of ball screens it just feels like he’s either rushed or his feet aren’t set or something looks off with his form and it’s so weird to me because like I would have said he was the best pullup shooter and the best yeah like best three-point shot maker off the dribble in the country coming into the year it just seemed like there’s time like game after game after game last year he’d hit his he’d hit step back threes he hit threes he’d snake a ball screen he like in end up shooting a step back off of that and he would it would just be cash and it just seemed like they’d keep building he’d be stacking these threes even when it felt like they shouldn’t go in they still would so to go from that to seeing like every time he shoots a step back or shoots one of those threes coming off a screen it just doesn’t seem like it’s going in you can tell as soon as it leaves his hands and I I mean you want to believe that he’s going to get it together eventually like you can’t shoot this poorly off season but 10 games in it’s like man is now or never like if you if if it doesn’t change this game or against UCLA on Saturday maybe you talk yourself into like okay RJ and 2025 he’s going to return to form you know like he just it just seems like he needs that breakthrough moment to kind of get right and to get back into a rhythm it feels like he’s rushing everything he’s always been somebody who has been a like a difficult shot maker right what he does off the bounce has been incredible throughout his career but he’s done it at a pretty efficient clip this year I think the difference is that there hasn’t been guys who can kind of offset the defensive pressure there’s Armando Bott down low that opponents have to worry about there isn’t uh a Caleb love which good Caleb love defenses have to worry about right on the wing there are other guys on the perimeter at least from three that are true threats or at least have been true threats I I think that’s why Ian Jackson in particular are such an important piece to this team it’s difficult figure out where he fits into the rotation almost because RJ kadoo and Trimble kind of have their spots locked in mhm Drake pal is what you found to be the best answer at the four so far so where I don’t know where Jackson totally comes into that but I think he is figuring that out to me is I I think part of the key to unlocking RJ’s efficiency yeah I think over the past few games really since Maui the most efficient lineups from like a plus minus perspective I would honestly you need to tap into Evan Mia’s numbers to see his uh I should yeah his his like most efficient lineups with the three guards it’s it’s from a plus minus perspective at least it’s been Davis Trimble and Jackson like that’s been the best three kad’s really struggled since Maui and you’re seeing it play out a little bit more I mean Ian played 24 minutes against Lal which if I’m not mistaken was either a season high or second highest total on on the year and he’s been better off ball than I think most of us anticipated um excuse me I let me correct myself I he played 24 minutes against Lal 27 against Alabama 28 against 24 against Lal 27 against Georgia Tech 28 against Alabama so he’s been 24 plus the last three games and I honestly anticipate that staying that way for the rest of the year um he’s been better off ball than I expected it seems like he’s a lot more comfortable as a catch and shoot threat in the corner and that is uh that’s huge for this team just to have someone else out there who’s who can play off of the other guards and he doesn’t have to be ball dominant um additionally when he gets downhill he’s pretty good at drawing contact he’s good at finishing uh through he’s good at finishing around the rim sometimes still has a some moments where he looks like a freshman and looks a little weak where he doesn’t either Elevate high enough or doesn’t quite take the angle you’d like to see I think those will eventually correct themselves as he as he gets more burned and gets more and more comfortable but yeah these last three games have been really encouraging for his progression just what you can expect to get out of him more consistently game in game out I agree well let’s look the Florida side of things now because I think Walter Clayton is kind of coming into this with the season we expected RJ Davis to have where he is in the National Player of the Year conversation it’s on the fringes that’s Janai bro cam Jones and then you choice pick your choice from there but Walter Clayton I think is in that second tier Elijah Martin starting around in the form you talked about the front court for this team is the only question with Florida the fact that they haven’t been tested against Great teams yet their their last win was against Arizona State who’s outside the kmom top 50 but that’s the the highest rated win they have so far this season yeah I’m with you I think like you can pick holes at all their schedule they’ve feasted on middle to bottom tier power Conference teams at the same time like we don’t really have anything to to suggest Carolina’s more than like a middle tier ACC team right now so it might just be more of the same Carolina just has a I will say they have higher in Talent than a lot of these teams they played it’s just a weird roster that doesn’t necessarily fit but um yeah Clayton’s been super impressive just Limitless range and pretty good getting downhill as well but the one who I’ve been super impressed by Was Elijah Martin I thought he was so good against Arizona State it’s reflected in the stat stat sheet 15 points 11 boards six assists uh it just feels like he can get into the paint whenever he wants and he sets up The Bigs really well too like he had a no look past Conan um one of the one of the best I’ve seen out of him all year that it’s like those type of backbreaking plays where even when you think you’ve you know your defense is held for 20 seconds into the shot clock or something and he creates something last second um with his with his vision and with his playmaking Instinct so uh it’s just they’re a really tough they’re just a really tough guard because you have skill bigs who have size who crash the glass and then you have a Bonafide star in Clayton and another big-time shot maker well well-rounded guard and Martin that like they’re going to give most teams fits all year even if their schedule’s been a little fraudulent so far the trio of Clayton Martin and will Richard on the perimeter to me is incredibly fun to watch because they’re all they are also versatile right you’ve had games where Walter Clayton’s obviously gone for 30 Elijah Martin went for 32 against Southern Illinois I think it was earlier this season will Richards started his season with 25 points against South Florida like you have any one of those guys who can go off any of them can get you you know five to eight assists in a night any of them can get you 10 rebounds in a game as well like have having that Trio I think makes this team dangerous and makes me think that this start is legit you know this is the one game I think we’re going to really get to see before SEC play starts for the Gators don’t know if they’re necessarily top 10 team but I would fight for them being a top like 12 to 13 team in the country I think they’re really really good the Gators the Gators you’re fighting for them being I I ranked them six this week in our heat check poll oh I’m saying like like I have them top 10 as well but like if you’re if you’re gonna push back and say anybody I think like like even if you’re looking at the most negative standpoint I think you’re still looking at them as a top 12 top 13 team like that’s on me bad listening comprehension no I I’m struggling we’re we’re fighting through some nasal congestion here we got some we got some brain little bit uh a little bit bearish on my Tar Heels my my heart wants to say Carolina Back Against The Wall shows the world they’re not dead I think what’s more realistic though is Florida wins and probably pulls away in the last five minutes to get like an 8 to 10 point win and I’ll even go like a bold prediction for this one I think Alex Condon shows the college basketball landscape he’s one of the best bigs in the country one of the more underrated ones that’s for sure I just think that like when you talk about his three-point shooting ability his rebounding even when when teams double him like Arizona State tried that down the stretch against Florida he dissected doubles and found Ruben chenu cutting for a dunk or like kicked it back out to the perimeter he’s just really skilled and I could see him turning in something like a 17.9 rebound five assist game or something and probably like two highlight reel blocks against some of UNCC smaller guards have have we lost Hope on Jaylen Washington breaking out and becoming like a viable front Court piece I think Hubert has I mean he played eight minutes against Lal Washington early second half he shot a contested three where his feet weren’t set and Hubert pulled him and we didn’t see him again until there was like three minutes left I will tell you sorry to get to get us a little derailed who did look really good against Lal and who is like has become the hope of the the UNCC front court is James Brown okay talk me talk me in at James Brown all right so James Brown he gets in the game it’s it’s garbage time sure but there’s probably like eight or nine minutes left in the game uncc’s up 25 at this point probably Elliot cadoo whether it’s Hubert whether it’s Elliot went to James Brown on a pick and roll three straight or four straight possessions it was like the same time every every time up and down the court high ball screen with James Brown Lal put two on the ball cadoo found James Brown four straight possessions and he went three of four and looked like the only big who consistently can fight through contact and finish around the rim on this team he’s I think listed at 69 or 610 he looks like he’s added some muscle since he’s been at Carolina and my hope is this I said this to guy in our Lal recap but James Brown played at link Academy like usually those Prep School guys with a little bit of pedigree uh can give you some hope there he did not start at link that was where his because when he committed to Carolina he was a top 30 or top 35 Prospect plays for mouan elite on the ebl circuit doesn’t have a great summer with them transfers to link U average something like seven and five there but it just made me Wonder like is it possible that you know he learned a little something playing at that Prep School level is it possible that he’s maybe going to be a late bloomer and at some point this year show he can play 10 15 minutes of serviceable basketball I just I like that he has the size and he has decent touch around the basket I think defensively he’s probably going to struggle but so is every big on this UNCC roster like you might as well play him against Florida just to see what you have and him throw him into the fire against the top five team and see if he can hold his own I bring it up because I the only the only question I have about Florida is if their front court is that good right last year they were solid but it was a a thing where there was um the the sum was greater than the whole of their parts right but you add teams able to break down certain parts at times I they haven’t played anybody who’s really I think truly tested them in the front Court I don’t think UNCC can mhm but I I I think the only way this turns into I’m going to be a little mean and I’m sorry I think the only way this turns into a game is if a UNC front Court player has a breakout performance do you want to know how many points V all luin scored against Florida the last time you played him how many points have Donald scor against Florida 25 in a Vanderbuilt Victory so maybe he’s the guy this time maybe he’s the guy I I think that’s the key for UNC I don’t trust it I’m going
