for Lance I’m not 100% sure of how to pronounce his last name I think is gr gr gr Grier I don’t know I’m not sure how to pronounce his name with no no disrespect on that at all but I think they’re both do a really good job his offense and defensive coordinator and special teams um as everyone knows coach Chris the ball is a uh just a detailed football coach and I’m uh excited to get opportunity to coach against him um this week uh we both had a chance of coaching under Greg shano so there’s a lot of similarities in reference to just uh wanting to be detailed and wanting to do things right that um I know I learned from Greg and I’m pretty sure he learned a lot of the same things hey coach I I hope you indulge me I just have a few guys that wanted to get some uh injury up dates on uh starting with Trevor Peña he should be fine he should be good to go yeah he should be uh Sino yeah he should be fine also he practic today Hatcher Hatcher won’t play okay uh bellam I mean he asking my whole thing what if I don’t want to tell the people who playing and who not playing like you work for us or for them CU I see you every week with us so you know sometimes to ask those questions early on it’s kind of sucks but uh Bellamy is playing he’s back though uh Reed Reed should play yeah I mean why wouldn’t he he finished the game right right just just check it yeah thank you sorry D coach how are you I’m good how about yourself D doing well this is 22 years to the day of the last time that Miami came to the Dome Saturday November 30th 2002 it was Big East Rivals at the time now in the ACC playing each other just what you can say about this matchup and the fact that it’s the first time we’ll see the canes in the dome in 22 years I mean I think it’s pretty cool when you think about the just the canes and the U and their back um I think coach Chris Ball did an amazing job I think their fan base has done a great job of getting behind him and uh getting behind the team you know and their uh Community I’m just excited that the U is back CU it’s better for college football so them having opportunity of being back together I remember watching them as a team I grew up watching I remember them I think it was possibly 03 when they had with gay uh Brian McKenna Ed Reed Andre Johnson just list goes on Philip Buchanon like all those dudes on that team I mean they was legit you know um actually Jamal Green was from my city was down there playing with them so I me just really excited to have Miami be back where they are because they’re uh really great football programs been for a long time so happy they are and then I’m happy that we’re coming back honestly like it’s uh give a lot credit to them doing well but also to us the same way our uh players and I think our community is behind and hopefully the community has show that this weekend at the game that everyone to be out and all the fans will be back for this game because um it’s a real good football game and it’s a football game that’s um two good teams you know two Good Records you know and you haven’t had this this late in in November in a while and it’s a good deal to have it right after Thanksgiving that you got two good teams and one of the better conferences in the country get an opportunity to play so um I’m excited about it I think two of the best quarterbacks in the country are about to go out and compete so I was having the opportunity to go against Miami when Syracuse has a really good quarterback Miami has a really good quarterback so you know it’s a lot of things that match up the same it’s pretty cool when you’re watching this game Going Back start with MD then go to Jessie and then Samantha uh coach you just mentioned at the Yukon game that that was you know kind of the biggest game of the year for your team you’re closing out the regular season against a top 10 ranked opponent what is kind of your message to the team this week about you know what they need to do to close out the regular season at the Dome we just got to continue to have fun together play with each other have fun together um just really do it with our seniors you know those guys that really helped change the program and flip it around to be where we are supposed to be at so we’re just going to have a lot of fun with each other we just want to go out there and play freely like just lay it all on the line just enjoy getting an opportunity to play against an ranked opponent at home you know for their last game you know I know it’ll be extremely exciting I heard that uh Miami is going to come deep everybody from Miami coming I know everybody from Camden coming so and I know Syracuse is already deep so you know it to be a lot it’s going to be fun it’s going to be intense in the state in the uh state in the stands it’s going to be intense just on the football field so it’ll be a good atmosphere man I think this is a game that um everyone wants to see you know um and credit to both teams both both teams both quarterbacks have led their teams and had them just being able to play ball and put them in this situation so um it’s a good deal to uh be a part of this uh coach to piggyback off that I mean just what it means to to have a top 10 opponent coming into the Dome and the opportunity that you have to potentially play spoiler um for them this weekend and I mean with all due respect to them I’m excited with playing them but it doesn’t matter whether you’re top 10 top 50 whatever you are we’re going to prepare and go out and play the same you know so um I don’t really look at like where they ranked at and stuff like that they won’t because I’ve seen a lot of eight and three teams in the country we’re not ranked so I just go through all these guys ranked I don’t know what it takes to be ranked anymore so I don’t really kind of pay attention to that CU I know um I seen a few teams that lost to some teams that lost to teams we beat so I was wondering how would they still be ranked so I don’t really understand the ranking anymore I got to go read the whole ranking piece of it and see how that goes and then um but I’m excited we get to play against coach Chris Ball cuz he’s been a great coach he’s dominated everywhere he’s been coaching so then he get an opportunity to come here and I get to go against him and like I said earlier we both had a chance of uh learning under coacho coach um as you mentioned you know attendance this week I think might be competing with Thanksgiving and I want to know what your pitch would be to fans and supporters in the community why they need to show up for this game even though it is a holiday weekend what else you going to be doing Thanksgiving Thursday right what is good what is it Black Friday it’s Friday well the Saturday is Syracuse in Miami play football I mean what else you going to do though like where you going to sit around and CRI and we play 3:30 so no matter if you out all Friday night you still get to get up still make it in get up by 11:00 get dressed do whatever it is you need to do guys go get a haircut woman get your makeup all your stuff done and then I think you should be at the game it’s going to be like a uh it be like a little Club early in the daytime it’s the day party come to the day party and watch Syracuse play uh Miami coach you mentioned on Saturday day that you kind of now know what you want uh your future quarterbacks to be like because of Kyle mccy being here what are some of those off the field standards that Kyle has set that you want to see in your future quarterbacks at this program first and last out hold everyone accountable including the coaches backler coach when I spoke K mord after this last victory over Yukon he said it was the best decision in his life to come to Syracuse just what you can say about being on the other side of that decision and just what it’s meant to you to see him grow into not one of the best quarterbacks in Syracuse history but one of the best quarterbacks in the nation currently right now I think we both made the best decisions of Our Lives outside of me being married and having children uh he did do that yet so outside of that this is one of the best decisions I made in my life also so I totally understand and feel where he’s coming from with that um the cerie that we’ve built together that he’s been um just right by my side the entire time uh we ask each other questions all the time just from reference to me last night calling them asking him something that what do you think we should do team-wise how would your peers take this and accept so I go to him with all of those questions you know and uh wherever he feels on it kind of go with him because I feel I’m in charged in him as I said but um I’m I’m just so thankful for him I mean it’s pretty cool that he would mention something like that to say this was the best decision of his life I’m very thankful that he even mentioned that that’s pretty cool and um one of the better decisions of my life also outside of those three children and that uh wife that I have so it was a big major decision for me also coach you mentioned a few times how this is a matchup with two really great quarterbacks what do you see as the strongest suit for each quarterback and how is each quarterback going to help lead their team this week where you been at the last few weeks you always pop back up like where you been that’s good how you how your grades going grades are going well right now so it’s good I’m expecting to see you like take over the country one day soon so keep it upci uh repeat your question again uh you talked about this as a matchup between two really great quarterbacks so what’s the strongest suit from each quarterback in this matchup I think they’re both intelligent I think both teams follow them you know they have that leadership on both teams um both have good arms they understand secondary they understand what’s going on they can ID the front I just think that both teams are playing with a coach on the field you know and it’s a it’s a good deal to be able to see that like that’s the kind of matchups you want to see um I I’m excited about this match up Samantha just a follow up on that coach what what do you see from Miami and watching the film and chall they’re a good football team they’re just allaround good football team I think at any moment every they can be clicking on all cylinders you know everybody has some mishaps on certain things that may happen but I think they’re they dominate up front I think their running backs are strong they run through contact they have good receivers especially their slot and I like number two also um the secondary they got a bunch of good athletes their linebackers like contact I like those dudes U the D Line’s good so I mean they’re good on all they can play football I mean it’s Miami they’re getting back you know Miami’s coming back to who they were which is a good deal so um I mean it’s just Miami football um I know you said that you have to look into what would make a team become ranked but based on the eye test based on the teams that you have beaten or Syracuse has beaten versus some of the other teams that are ranked right now do you think that Syracuse should be ranked this week I me I don’t know I don’t even really care I just want to go play this week I mean I if we were supposed to be ranked then I guess they would rank us and I don’t really know how that goes and I haven’t been coaching along enough for to be like getting hit with fines and stuff so I’m going just be very very respectful what I say because every dollar counts for me you know so I think they doing a good job they just want us to be ranked at the moment so we just have to wait until that time comes um coach going back to Kyle’s comments after the Yukon game about this was the best decision of his life we’ve seen a lot of players talking this season just how personally you’ve impacted them how the culture that you’ve brought in about you know building better men has impacted them personally and on the football field what does that mean to you in your first season as a head coach just to see the impact that you’ve not only made on the Syracuse football program but also on you know all these young men that will be you know playing for you in the future years and you know leaving the program after the season that’s why I coach I want to be a blessing to others I want to make sure that um when your day is down you can turn a coach friend you know when things aren’t going right you could turn a coach friend and I feel like um God has put me in a position to go through a lot in life you know I went through a lot of Trials tribulations early on so I understand it at their age I understand when it’s hard I understand when you really want something extremely bad and it’s hard to get so um I’m just very thankful that God put me through that and and that’s just my job like you know like not in reference to like I get paid to do that here but like my purpose is to help others you know I want to make sure that everyone you come across me and you see me it’s like yo he really a good person like I’m I got I’m going to take the message that he gave me and I’mma use that and I’m guaranteeing I’m going to do better or at least over the next 30 days until you may forget or whatever that nature but I’m very thankful that they say that um I’m thankful they believe in our culture because Dart is what it’s about just being detailed accountable Relentless and tough and just about love like you got to have real genuine love like there so many people out here that everything they do is with a hitting agenda like I know I’m going to get mine back because I’m a blessing to others the more you help people the more you about seeing other people go be successful and pushing them out to go do it then God going to give you your his back and that’s just I know it’s just what I believe in you know you do dirt you get dirt you doing things the right way then that Karma come back karma is both ways it’s good and bad so I’d rather have good karma so so I just I don’t know I’m just a genuine real dude like what you see is what you get you know and I care about you even if I don’t know you cuz I just don’t want to see nobody down you don’t want to see nobody hurt I don’t want to see nobody poor like I go outside I might see like somebody that’s going without they bums things of that nature I’ll pull over I’m the one that’s going to pull over I’m going make sure I take care of him talk to him like yo lock in you know God I love you like I got your back you ever need anything try to reach out you know just sometimes that conversation can make somebody change their entire life and with me knowing that and we knowing that God put me in a position I’m in I’m G to reach out to as many as possible even if you’re not on my team I’ll still reach out and talk to you if I can help you go to a college I’m going to make sure I can help you go to school cuz this isn’t a place for everybody but my goal is to be able to help everybody that I come across if you come across across my path I’mma make your day better that’s my that’s just what I like to do more coach start coach going off of that just what you’re most thankful for as we head toward Thanksgiving just what you reflect upon with this team most thankful for most thankful for in General on and off the field the team your family whatever you want to say I’m most thankful that I know who uh God is like that’s what I’m most thankful for because that gets me through a lot of days when you wake up you don’t want to go you have to go because you understand and know what he done for me and how he sent his son here to die on the cross so like I’m most thankful for that uh secondly I will say for my wife and children you know like that’s that’s to go without you know I’m thankful for them um even though sometimes why my wife says I don’t show her enough attention I love to mess out of her she means like everything to me and my family um she’s the rock of our family and things are just like they’re better when she’s happy so happy life happy wife happy life and then I’m just thankful for uh the position I have here in Syracuse to be able to not only touch the football team but the entire Community like I’m happy that I get to be an ambassador for Syracuse University cuz that’s like really that’s a big thing that’s a major something heavy that you be able to carry on your shoulders and um I know God got me so I’m extremely thankful for that and last thing I’m thankful that I was born and raised in Camden New Jersey because growing up there has has me ready for like there’s no obstacle in the world that’s going to come my way that I won’t be ready for cuz if I didn’t go through it there’s someone else in my city that went through it or someone I could reach back to and they always give me good advice of how to make it through um you mentioned a few questions ago when Maddie asked you um that sometimes if you see someone on the street you would pull over on the side of the road and help them as much as you’d be willing to share outside of you know your own team what are some of the ways that you have helped some of the people in the community if you do see somebody on the street what is involved in that conversation what are you doing I just do a lot I do different things like but I ain’t really trying to do it for like the publicity you know but I’ll just do a lot like whatever’s needed like if I see you and you messed up I got you if I can you know as long as it won’t affect my family um but there’s a lot of things that I do there’s a lot of things that I do that I don’t want to get like the publicity or the credit for I just want to do it because it’s from your heart and I think that when you do things that are just straight from the heart without everyone knowing like that’s what really count you know when the cameras aren’t on and the people aren’t around like who are you I tell my players like we can do all this stuff while everybody’s around and when it me media there and all that stuff but like when no one’s around in the summertime and it’s you by yourself or it’s February and you know we getting ready for Spring ball soon like what are you doing at 9:00 when everybody getting ready for the party who’s that guy that’s doing something extra like what are you doing then like that’s kind of your real character that’s who you are that’s what you’re about um I just going to tell you I just love helping and I mean it’s known it’s felt in Syracuse it’s felt in the city that I’m from sh it should be felt really throughout the country cuz it’s bigger than just these two cities so wherever you are if I’m around and I can do something I’mma do it like there’s things I’m going get ready to do this week that I have to do but I just don’t want to push it out like hey I’m doing this and I’m doing that but you know I’m I definitely serve because it says that we’re supposed to serve so I’m definitely a server it’s important that I do that Christian coach we’re approaching now the anniversary of you getting hired here at Syracuse your first 12 months here in central New York what have you learned about yourself and how much you’ve grown into position as Syracuse head coach um just uh I don’t really know I’m not sure yeah I I would have to sit back and really reflect on that like that’s a lot of people could just tell you I’ve learned this about I learned I lost three games and I could have helped us and put us in a better situation to win those games um I’m learning how to deal with uh situations on the entire team and not just my position group that I had and just being able to make the best decision for the University I don’t just make decisions for a group of guys that will only possibly affect the team I have to make the decisions for an entire University an entire alumni base the community things of that so every decision I make I have to take I have to be really patient I did learn to be more patient um I’m actually learning to listen to my wife a little bit more you know I mean just like like sit back and listen to her because she’s not actually involved in everything I’m doing and I get to learn everything that’s going on outside and learn different pieces from her and um just really I’m learning to trust a little bit like I have trust issues so I don’t trust anyone honestly except for the people that I know I can so like just everyone isn’t always bad you know so but it’s like that part I’m trying to learn to trust which is extremely hard so I just don’t trust because I could tell you something and then you could make it the way you want to make it things of that nature so I just kind of I don’t know I’m trying to learn to trust you know and I know the more that I trust in God he’ll send the right people in my life that I can trust so that I I could continue to be straightforward and not have to have everything be you know a little bit different that makes sense last question coach you certainly have a big game this week but the business of the sport knocks on the door too I’m just curious what your process is with the Portal bll game opt outs things that you have to have conversations with your players on that is going to come up right after this Miami game what what’s your process going to be like there my process is to practice really really hard today focus on Miami practice really really hard tomorrow focus on Miami which is Tuesday Wednesday will be in the third quarter we’re going to practice really hard focus on Miami on Thursday we going to practice earlier really really hard we’re going to focus on Miami we going to eat Thanksgiving food be thankful for each other and then Friday we’re going to do the same thing like I don’t care about none of that other stuff until after we done playing to you like we get an opportunity to play against a team like this how could we uh how could I focus on anything else you know I’m just going to lock in on this and just make sure everything is straight and I’mma pray a lot though you know I’m going pray um for safety of our players safety for them flying here things like that and I’m going just pray that he gives me all the signs to be able to handle all those things afterwards that most coaches are probably focusing on and d and all those things that um you know I lock in on Saturday night and I lock in Sunday I’ll catch back up you know it because it’s still gonna be there anyway you know it’ll be there but I I I like to keep the main thing the main thing and uh this football team is too good for us to uh not focus on them you know and then to be able to focus on what they do we focused on us sorry but for us to focus on them and focus on what they do because they cause problems all over the football field so we want to make sure that we’re uh we’re locked in and ready so we can go out and hopefully all the fans are there and every seat is filled so I want to make sure that when it’s a packed house and it’s a soldout game that you get the best version of s football thanks y’all be safe
