[Music] hey everybody it’s Chuck arfine welcome to the white socks podcast here at the winter meetings in Dallas lots to get to here on the podcast uh Garrick crochet trade rumors how many teams are interested in crochet how soon could he be traded I’ll share with you what I’m hearing and we’re going to be joined by John morosi of MLB Network he’s got the pulse of the garri crochet trade rumors as well also ahead what about Luis Robert Jr despite having the worst season of his career could he be traded this off season Chris GS says a lot of teams are interested in Luis Robert Jr we’re going to hear from him and the White Sox announced their coaching staff on Monday new bench coach Walker mckinven comes to the white sock from the Brewers we’re going to hear what Brewers manager Pat Murphy says about mckinven and who else is going to be on the podcast ladies and gentlemen Scott pnik is here Texas native you are going to be here with me on the podcast today how we doing Chuck we’re doing good I missed you and what do you think about being at your very first winter meetings this is my first winter meetings um here being did you bring your boots Chuck have boots you came to Texas and you didn’t bring your boots you don’t have boots on no I I left I didn’t know I didn’t think you were going to be in boot so I didn’t I didn’t go I didn’t wear them but uh this is my first winter meeting Chuck and and the energy in the air I I knew it was going to be busy I knew there was going to be people everywhere but I did not think it was to this magnitude so it’s interesting to see um Everybody wan to make deals improve their ball Club there’s an energy in the air it’s fun to fun to be around all right so on the podcast Garrick crochet trade rumors Luis Robert Jr trade rumors the coaching staff and oh the one and only scotet sendic it is coming your way right now all right we’re going to start with gar cro and I’m going to tell you what I’ve heard lots of obviously lots of interest in Garrick crochet as many as 12 teams interested in gar crochet around six teams interested in Luis Robert Jr a few teams have expressed interest in Andrew Ben attendi lots of interest in Andrew vau which is surprising but we’re going to get to vau and Robert in a little bit but uh gck crochet what do you think about his situation and how the whes need to navigate this this offseason and specifically maybe even this week yeah and why wouldn’t there be interests in Garrett crochet you would think teams are lining up to get um a piece of this guy coming off the season he came off of last year Chuck uh dominating one of the best left-handers in the game of baseball to watch him take the ball every 5 days and go out and be on the attack and and go about it the way he did you would think teams are salivating and I’m interested uh to see what kind of offers uh are going to be for a guy like this and of all the arms out there Chuck this is kind of a a unique one here there’s not a lot of wear and tear on that arm only what 14 something in9 Innings last year um it was his first year as a starter but he had plenty of time to get down his routine and understanding of what it takes to be a starter um what it how it takes what you got to do in between stars to get your body ready for the next one so um not a lot of bullets he’s fresh and coming off that year he came off of is going to be interesting to see what happens all right so how important of a trade is this and when I say that the return how important is the return does it have to be right it has it has to be right again um one of the best arms out there and and just the situation with him being for first year as a starter so um that return is going to have to be Hefty so trying to navigate that and put together prospects in a package um has got to be challenging so it’s going to be interesting to see what happens okay so uh as far as I have been told nothing is imminent with a trade for gar crochet there’s a lot of exchanging of ideas with other teams now granted this could change like that right but you see a lot of free agents still on the board in terms of starting pitchers and then you’ve got a cheap option and G crochet so teams have to be deciding okay do we spend the big money on a Corbin burns on a Max freed or do we spend less and give away Prospect Capital which these GM is like to hold like their goal yeah well you know those prospects down in the minor leagues are valuable and but the but Chuck you just don’t know what you’re going to get with these prospects you know these GMS have these people that come in and try to assess and and how are these guys going to develop you can see the physical skill set but you just don’t know what’s inside you don’t know what this guy does away from the field what he does in the winter so it’s challenging to project what a certain guy is going to do so then to try to being all those multiple Parts together to match uh what the value of a crochet can be it’s got to be challenging um so but there’s going to have to be some valuable position players and some valuable can’t miss guys in this deal yeah this would be I guess something that Chris gets might be up against and other teams in the same situation is that you’ve got some gmms some who will look at G crochet and go hey I got two years of him but this Prospect who I think very highly of I could get six years of him and then they’re trying to project what this Prospect could do for the next 6 years which would be exceeding in theory but Garett crochet could do in two years but then again here’s Garett crochet Major League player prospects what will they do here so when they get to the major league so you’re projecting something that may not come to fr yes what kind of impact are these hitters going to make in those six years you got a front L line starter like crochet he is impacting the baseball game he can win a ball game for you by himself you look at him in a playoff situation with with five games he can go win two games for you in that Series so again projecting what these guys can do um day in and day out that’s also another variable these guys are playing each and every day but the impact you just don’t know what you’re going to get you know you don’t know from from one minor league player to the next some guys have have have great physical skill sets and you say oh this guys can’t miss you never get anything from them you got guys over here that when they take the field there they’re they just have a unique way of making baseball plays out there that that everybody rallies around so again you just just can’t predict all right well John morosi of Al network has been uh doing a lot of reporting about the gar crochet trade rumors here on Monday he added the Brewers into the mix expressing interest in crochet I got a lot more information and context from John morosi here on the podcast here’s my conversation with JP all right John morosi MLB Network let’s start with the G crochet trade rumors you’ve got the pulse of things what are you hearing what do you know Chuck I’ve been hearing that a trade is increasingly possible I’m not quite sure that I’ll say likely this week but that things have progressed and and let’s start with the Boston Red Sox we talked a lot about them linking to Garrett crochet I still believe that fundamentally they are the best team to get crochet because of their quality of young players and what I’m told is their increased willingness to include Marcel Meyer in this trade they’re actually less likely to include Christian Campbell who they love is an up the-middle Defender center field second base shortstop that that Campbell right now is more Untouchable than Meyer is Roman Anthony is probably Untouchable in any case uh he’s so good and so I think the Red Sox overall a good good base of prospects maybe Kyle teal could be available in different interations of this but they’re still the team I’m watching most carefully because we know they need starting pitching they could potentially trade for crochet and then sign a freed or Burns may also tell you that if if they get freed or Burns that perhaps they have improved leverage with the white sock so I would say to white sock fans stay tuned to what’s going on in the free agent Market because it does impact potentially the crochet trade talks the Brewers are involved there too the Cubs are involved there as well um I’ve had people say oh the Mets could still get crochet well the Mets are doing everything right now so so they they are a team to watch in a lot of different ways but the the interest level in crochet is robust and I would say that that there’s a very strong likelihood that he is going to be somewhere else besides Glendale When spring trading gets underway yeah so when I look at the prospect list and you want position players cuz that’s what the White Soxs want the Mets are an interesting match the Orioles are an interesting match could you see the Orioles willing to give up one of their top position player prospects because they haven’t really been able or really been willing to do it yes they are I think they well they would have to be I guess is how I would answer that if they’re going to get G crochet and I was told that there have been conversations between the Orioles and the white socks about crochet uh and and you’re right the Orioles have at least the highlevel type of of prospects there that I think could make a big impact Kobe Mayo’s name is been very popular and prominently mentioned in that in that context they don’t have the same number of multiples as they once did because they’ve made a lot of trades in the last calendar year uh so I think the Orioles overall base of players isn’t quite what it used to be but they have some high impact guys whether it’s uh and then certainly some players at the major league level that I would say are very unlikely to be moved like cower and and Westberg Westberg is probably Untouchable in almost any trade I he’s so good and and so highly valued by the Orioles but I think you’re you’re h on the right teams Chuck and and I think the Orioles especially given how quickly they were dispatched from the playoffs this past fall uh I’m not going to say that they’re as motivated as a team like the Mets but they’re motivated and I think they realized they were dramatically short in starting pitching and that crochet even though he’s not perfect because there have been some injuries there and we haven’t seen him necessarily throw 192 Innings on a routine basis uh there is a lot of interest in Garett crochet do you think the free agent starting pitching market and crochet are affected in one way does Burns have to get off the board before crochet is traded freed Etc it’s good question Chuck I think that it’s it would help the crochet decision happen once teams miss out on free agents because I could easily hear the Red Sox White Sox staring contest happening and the Red Sox saying no I’m not going to give you Meer because I could just spend my money to to get Corbin Burns or or to Max or to get Max freed and we know this about the Red Sox if they were willing to offer more than $600 million for Wan stto then that money’s in there somewhere Chuck so it’s it’s available now they may say well that was only for Wan sto okay dollars are dollars and so the budget is there for a special player and and clearly the Red Sox to me they’re a team Chuck that they haven’t felt as relevant as they usually are for a while they they made that nice run of the ALCS when schwarber was there in in 2021 but that feels like that was decades ago they they need to get back in a in a more substantive way to being a team they’ve been and they really haven’t been the same team since they traded mookie bets they they need to get back prominent to where Fenway Park is is a A Gathering Place and one of the principal uh spots that we talk about in Major League Baseball hasn’t been that way for a while and I think the Red Sox are motivated in a way that the Cubs in some ways are motivated and and listen there used to be a time and you know this Chuck where we would say a Cubs White Sox trade no way well Jose kintana that deal changed that and so I think that we’re due for another big trade between the Cubs and socks and so the Cubs we know whether it’s Owen Casey Matt Shaw really good young position player prospects that I think would fit really well on the South Side Jed Hoyer and Chris gats are friends I mean that I’m sure they’ve had some discussions how many teams do you think are legitimately interested in crochet I think interest I would say eight or n but legitimately with a chance to get him I I think probably in the end it’ll be a smaller group of four uh again it could be five it could be three but it’s just from a standpoint of narrowing things down and mastering the information that you’ve got I think they’ll try to narrow it down to to a handful of teams and then proceed from there and I think the important thing too Chuck is the white socks are set up well to do a good and thorough job with this trade the Chris gets is a Player Development oriented person as is Josh Barfield as is Paul yanes they’ve had different jobs different teams and different settings for a period of time to where they’ve gathered information and Intel on a a broad number of young players and so while the trade deadline in some ways was a little underwhelming perhaps some analysts would say they’ve got a chance to do this the right way and with a little bit more time and a little more thoroughness really do a good job with Garett crochet and I expect Chris gets in this team will do that okay JP morosi thank you so much Chuck my pleasure you’re everywhere you were in Japan recently you go you’re a world traveler covering baseball and all sports uh all around the globe thank you Chuck I appreciate it was a great trip to Taiwan and Japan two amazing baseball countries and I can now bring those insights back here to Dallas in the winter meetings thank you all right so back here with SC cnick you know John thinks you know a trade is increasingly possible he’s not sure if it’s going to happen this week but he says interest is robust which is what I’m hearing as well so we’ll see what happens and just for some information about a couple guys that he brought up there’s uh Marc mayor who are the Red Sox he says would be willing to trade him he’s 21 years old shortstop Red Sox number two Prospect uh at daa last year he slashed 307 37480 and they said Kristen Campbell is Untouchable or more Untouchable he’s the third ranked Prospect with the Red Sox he is their top hitting Prospect from last season he raped last year in high a able a and AAA this is the guy like I’m ready but he’s a shortstop you got Coulson Montgomery and Chris gets said here today that they he expects Coulson to at least compete for the shortstop job come spring train we’ll see what happens with that big question and another thing that uh get said and we’re going to hear from Chris in a moment is that there’s kind of a Wan sto effect once sto got signed Chris’s phone has been a little more active more teams are now contacting him about certain trades and you’re trying to figure out who’s going to be the team and I kind of feel like the team that was going to go for crochet or Robert are the teams that are already spending money they’re trying to be they’re all in like the Mets like I’m just I know that uh John was talking about the Red Sox I’m just focused on the Mets like the Mets want everyone in everything they’re going for it and after spending 700 million on stto to get crochet for 2.9 and trade prospects fine yeah and and that’s a big part of the deal is who’s willing to do part with those prospects who’s willing to do a deal you got to think that there’s what a handful of teams out there who feel they’re in position to win the World Series next year and if you’re knocking on the door and you bring in an arm like Garrett crochet or a potential guy like Luis Roberts it’s a guy that can put you over the hump having him in that series short series like we talked about in the playoffs um who is willing to come to the table who’s willing to take the risk to make that deal to push their team over the hump and you brought up a good point you know who they have position wise mat versus what we have in or what the White Soxs have in the organization there if one of their big chips in that in one of those moves as a short stop well where are you projecting close to Montgomery how close do you feel he is so again so many moving parts to these deals it’s it’s very interesting to to hear GMS talk about it how many moving Parts there are and and how that you know they can fit a certain piece here or there um to put you over the hump but you know these clubs got to be thinking think about if we can add an arm like Garrett crochet that’s that’s an impact yeah it’s a game changer so Luis Robert Jr I was thinking before I got here there’s no way they’re going to trade him just because his value is so low what kind of return are you really going to get for Luis Robert Jr and then I got here I started hearing oh this team is interested in him and that team is interested in him and now you’re playing a game of okay are you thinking he’s going to be 2023 Luis Robert Jr 2024 Robert Jr who had the worst season of his career here is Chris gats talking about uh the interest and there’s a lot of it and he also add some stuff about gabri crochet here speaking with the media at the winter meetings in a way refreshingly Robert’s gotten a lot of attention as well um and and that that just speaks to to the talent that that Louis Robert um brings to the table I mean at at his floor just because of the the the defense and the base running and the power um you know he could be an above average player let alone if you get a smooth runway in the beginning of the year and what he’s capable of doing uh throughout a full season I mean he’s an impactful guy and teams are recognizing that not to say that we’re we’re heavily motivated by by any sense but when you’re in a rebuild like this you got to look at ways to accelerate it um and and if there’s something out there that we feel like can move this along and and take us to another level we’re going to consider it were you surprised by how many teams are interested in particular in crochet I mean it’s tough to say you’re surprised when when you have a pitcher that that went out and did what he did I mean it’s there’s only so many Frontline guys Ace caliber type pitchers uh in our game um so I I there isn’t a team in baseball that wouldn’t take care of crochet um and we feel very fortunate to to have him wearing a white socks uniform and comfortable going into the SE season with Garrick rochet um you know we we believe in we believe in the pitcher I mean he he um you know he’s a guy that that went out last year and and has has proven that that he’s a top pitcher in our game so um to say that I’m surprised no um now we just we got to do what’s best for the organization if you’re considering training um has the field narrowed in the last month or so like are there some separ some teams that have separated themselves in their aggressiveness there there are some teams that are that are more sincere than others um and then there’s some organizations that just you know we match up and we align more um you know we’ll we’ll we’re still kind of learning um and those conversations will will you know be ongoing um but while we’re here we’re going to do the best they can for for the white socks and if that means that we make a move we make a move but it’s okay if we don’t so it could be a minute or could not be like there’s no timetable in your mind there’s no time table have you we asked you a lot about Dylan last year when he was going through this have you talk much to Garrett in the offseason at all to Garrett in the off season I I personally I haven’t spoken to Garrett um I know our our our coaches have that’s because it just in our strength staff and medical our our usual um kind of check-ins and making sure that they’re um you know on top of their their strength and conditioning and if they have any needs that we can help them with so um personally I haven’t um but you know I also know he’s only a phone call away and and you know trust that that he’s preparing for next season and I know things are going really well for him this offseason Robert is obviously a huge talent but he’s coming off uh you subire year where there’s another injury can you kind of dispute the notion that you would be selling low on him this in this offseason because of that I mean it’s really how you you you you know the whether it be a free agent sending or a trade it’s the predictive nature of you know what this player is going to bring to the table in the future you know the the tools haven’t changed um obviously the injury last year was disruptive to his production um but the reason there’s so much interest because you maybe you know a team uh feels like they they can capture something that perhaps didn’t show up last year but if you go rewind to where we were a year ago I mean this guy you know it was was someone that um was you know invaluable I mean he was a a player that could impact the game in so many different ways so um but you know we a year later and but we we believe in the player without question and we know the player we know what he’s capable of doing and you know we take that very seriously you’re asking for a lot you say for him I mean is is the price tag high on on him uh I think it’s an appropriate price tag based on the talent that he brings to the table are you noticing a discrepancy between the evaluations of you and and some of the teams you’re talking about when it comes to him uh some perhaps but that that’s not uncommon for for you know every team has their um every every team has their you know evaluation system and and uh predictors of of future production um but that’s that’s something that that needs to be measured in any any conversation any deal that’s made um so you know we we feel very comfortable what he’s going to be able to do next year in future years so uh that’s certainly a big part of uh you know a big something large that we account for has there been interest in Beni too you heard from people who there’s interest with with with a lot of a lot of these guys and Andrew being one of them um once again you do what’s best for the organization and you know we have those conversations the economics of both Robert and crochet contracts seem to really weigh in heavily in your guys favor because if Robert is being deemed as the Superstar he was two years ago that’s a pretty great contract uh for the team to pick up are you are you feeling that from other teams that the economic part of this is something that’s a driving force as well yeah I think that’s that’s why there’s so much attention on these players you look at the the length of contract their ability and you know they they they have their models and their beliefs and evaluations and you know you either align with it or you don’t um but I I know for one thing as we stand here today um you know feel very comfortable and and proud to have them part of the White Sox organization all right some interesting stuff there from Chris gets on crochet and on Robert and I’m hearing some teams want a package of crochet and Roberts together if that happens my head’s going to explode yes but that that package together of prospects that that are going to match the value of those two guys that’s that s i mean talk about a blockbuster deal um but again you you get two teams who get those two skill sets coming over game changers yeah but what so let’s try to get in the mind of Chris gets do you trade him now because if teams are expressing interest I mean you’re not going to get Top Value I don’t think for Robert so if you don’t trade him now and you start the season there is the chance he has a great first half and you trade him at the deadline and you get even more but what if he has another 2024 where he gets hurt or is and or has a bad season I’m glad I’m here doing this job I would know what to do about that a case can be made for all for both sides of this um you mentioned he’s coming off of his worst offensive year I mean his value right now is is probably as low as it’s been uh his 5 years on the South Side um the first and foremost you know the question the first question is his health you know is he going to be able to stay healthy he’s only played at least 100 games two times in his 5 years there in U in Chicago 100 games last year 145 the year before you know has he learned about his body um is he going to be able to stay healthy and look you know every year you play 100 games or you you know you put yourself through a Major League season and you kind of wear yourself out you know you at the end you come and you you take a month off you start train or two months yeah yeah you’re refreshed but still Those Years start wearing on you as a player so is he going to you know have problems staying healthy in the future has he learned a bit about his body is he changing his offseason regimen on on what he’s doing so first and foremost these answers seem like no they have been hopefully it changes going forward well let’s hope I mean that’s that’s you know with the white socks have to be asking that’s what other clubs are asking um but if they were if they did hold on to him and went out and had you know stayed healthy and had three and a half really good months I mean the the return on what you’re going to get then versus what it is now is going to be through the roof and you look at the skill set and you look what this guy is capable of doing and sometimes you know you you you find something and it just clicks you know and then you take that momentum and you roll roll on it from there but I mean this guy is so talented and the the the player that we all thought he was going to be he just hasn’t put it together for consecutive Seasons the strikeouts are a problem 140 last year 170 the year before the plate discipline has not been there we just haven’t seen him make adjustments over the last few years it just wasn’t the Lis Robert we thought we were going to see that that last half of the season um again I know the injuries have to do with it when you spend that two months off in the middle of the Season not having time to prepare and get your body ready to play those I mean those are all variable so um that’s going to be the first question mark is can he stay healthy um and he can he condition his body to stay healthy um so this is an inter interesting one I think it’s going to come down to one team or maybe two whatever the number is going to be realizing we need this guy I look at the Yankees you move Aaron judge out to right field and you can put Luis Robert Jr in center right and it’s going to cost him $15 million with a $2 million buyout for next year and then if he’s really really good you can pick them up for 20 like the bang for your buck 100% right and you’re the Yankees and you’re like you didn’t spend 700 million on Juan stto go get Luis Robert Jr if you really want to but you got to give the white sock something so that’s a team that I’m watching 15 million next year and then 20 the next to with with options with Club options so you know you can you can get out of the deal if he has a poor year next year or he doesn’t say healthy so it’s a win-win for clubs all right there are things that happen uh here at the winter meetings the white socks announced their coaching staff for next season Brady Seymore coming back as the offensive coordinator it sounds like a football job but he’s really just going to focus on just the offense in general not being a hitting coach but kind of an overriding job with the offense Walker mckinven bench coach he was the Run prevention coordinator with the Brewers last season and then Joel mckethan assistant hitting coach he was the Reds hitting coach the previous two seasons not a lot of changes but we’ll talk about that in a second but I want you to hear what Pat Murphy Brewers manager had to say about Walker mckinven coming to the White Sox what are his benefits to the White Sox great decision maker he is a uh he’s all in you know it’s a life work for him it’s not something that uh it’s not a job you know he’s all in and um great decision maker he understands how the front office works he understands how uh the baseball staff Works um he’ll be a great help to will you guy’s got a great manager and will all right High Praise for will Venable and Walker mckinin I’m told he’s kind of like a mckinin is kind of like a Jason Bourne kind of guy like he’s just uh really just digs into the weeds and is very very intelligent and he’s going to be the bench coach for the white socks seems like a good hire sounds like passion for the game lives for the game um you you want some some man managers with with that uh ability you know to to be pumped up every day you come to far but I want some of those players too I want some players that have that same passion when they come to the field they want to just kick your tail and look Chuck that’s what the fans want you know we winning consistently at the big league level is tough but if you can fi a gritty team that’s going to come in play hard be all in night in and night out that’s what the fans want to see that’s entertaining hopefully they can feel that here soon yeah and I forgot to bring up Andrew vaugh so I’m hearing there’s been a lot of interest in Andrew vongh and you’re thinking look at the season the yet had 19 Homer 70 RBI he hasn’t really you know taken the next step in the last couple of Seasons but he’s only due to make about $6 million and apparently like you know there are the analytics that I look at which is you know not I’m not a saber matrician but the analytic people in baseball are seeing a lot more in the tank with Andrew V and the fact that there’s a lot of teams interested in him and the White Sox by the way say they don’t want to trade him and I don’t think he’s going to be traded but it kind of speaks to what really goes on behind the scenes oh go with a guy like andreon you’re like what do you there’s more than meets the eye sometimes oh gosh with all the numbers and the information and and the ability to predict what they feel this guy should be playing I think there is more in the tank with Andrew and what he’s been in the game what this will be his fifth year this be his f look growing and maturing as a hitter takes time it really does you learn so much during a 160 game schedule and then be able to but the good ones are be able to to take that information make adjustments improve themselves but um the guys got the makeup he works hard he wants to be good so there’s something there that teams like I see Andrew continuing to improve and eventually getting better offensively all right well Scott pedik thanks for being here you bet you bet he’s miss winter meetings Scott Pedic his debut here at the winter meetings we’ll see if the white socks do anything uh you know it’s sounds like things are starting to happen but I don’t know I’d like to leave here with a trade you know I’d always like to do that like some move was made and usually the white socks get stuff done but no guarantees maybe Chris gets will be up all night I’m sure he is I’m sure he’s wheeling and dealing right now oh okay all right so for Scot snck we got Jeff corbetts behind the camera we got Edgar Perez producer editor extraordinaire back in Chicago thank you everybody for listening to the podcast we back tomorrow with more Haw harlson take it away all right AR Chuck this edition of the white sock podcast is over [Music]
