to bring your college basketball experience to the next level big one this weekend I think it’s probably the game of the weekend Gonzaga and Yukon this one is a bounceback game for Gonzaga given the game they just played a week ago where they let it slip against Kentucky meanwhile on the other side Yukon coming off of back-to-back wins one of the better weeks in all of college basketball last week beating Baylor in Texas so two teams that both had a week to prepare for this two teams that I think are probably in different emotional spots right now and uh Conor correct me if I’m wrong feels like a a game that might feel kind of critical for the Gonzaga side here is that a fair way to frame this I think it’s it’s probably critical for both sides uh it is the last game that Yukon will play before they start their Big East slate uh if they win this game they would have gone three and0 against Baylor uh Texas and Gonzaga kind of getting rid of all of the stench of Maui for Gonzaga I feel like a loss in Madison Square Garden to Yukon won’t be it won’t be a killer to their their psyche unless Gonzaga gets up 10 points and still loses that game so yeah unless the same issues that have plagued them in the first two rear their ugly head and then it’s like oh that wasn’t as fluky as we may have hoped it’s more this is an issue for this team I could see that um so I we should start off the Jump here I am wearing an Aiden mahany hat and uh you and I have had quite a private back and forth on Aiden mahaney going back to the summer uh I was extremely wrong about who Aiden mahaney would immediately be at Yukon I think I called him the best player in the portal um part of that was certainly belief that pairing with Danny Hurley would basically be the the best possible version of what I think mahany could be uh it’s gone the opposite way he’s playing less and less as these games go on and that has meant good things for Yukon at this point you correctly staunchly in the summer disagreed with my beliefs that he had some sort of high ceiling here in a Yukon system and uh I think maybe I’m putting words in your mouth you didn’t expect it would be this bad right away is that a fair thing to say no I didn’t I and it’s not just you I Danny Hurley did Aiden Meaney no favors by saying that he need by comparing him and saying basically he needed to be somewhere between Tristan Newton and cam Spencer um uh those two players uh Tristan Newton one of the most accomplished if not the most accomplished point guard in Yukon history at the college level and cam Spencer who lives eats breathes sleeps basketball um and to mahan’s credit other than like the last two games especially Texas I think he only played six minutes against Texas he’s looked more confident his shot just isn’t falling uh but that was my biggest disagreement with you was that he’s always been somewhat of a streaky scorer streaky shooter inefficient shooter uh and it was helped by the fact that he played on a team with the best pick and roll defense in the country or one of the best pick and roll defenses in the country depend depending on on the year and also wasn’t the player of the year on his like he he he wasn’t he was the focal point defensively because of how much he could score but he wasn’t asked to be the best on his team and I think right now you’re in a spot where he isn’t shooting the ball well and he’s not a good Defender and so what can he really bring to this Yukon team in critical situations yeah okay that’s a very good way to frame it um so I I might be crazy I I still feel like there’s a way to get to a middle ground here and I guess it’s funny we’re leading with mahany before this game given his history as a Gonzaga killer a little bit right like I think it’s it’s been a joke thrown out there like maybe seeing the zags will wake him up for some reason it wouldn’t stun me if that happens at Madison Square Garden but at the same time like there’s a pretty big drop off here from like what he was the first five games to what he’s been he was bad the first five games but he was playing 20 minutes most nights he was still starting it was very clear that like Dan Hurley wants this guy to be a factor and then after the Memphis loss which look mahaney was awful he got torched defensively he kept getting switched on a Haggerty and Hagerty was just eating him alive since that game it’s almost like to me Hurley’s given up on him and I don’t know if that’s a fair way to frame it it’s early in the season certainly but he has played just over 50 minutes total in the five game since then and I guess as maybe the only person still on mahaney island I look at it he’s six for 12 from the floor in that span he has uh what’s he got eight assists to three turnovers in that span like I would argue he passes the ey test more in the last five games than he did when he was in the starting lineup and look maybe that’s something about he’s more comfortable in like a limited role he’s a bench guy that’s a good thing but I guess if you were a Yukon fan would you even be rooting for Aiden mahany to end up in a big role on this team or do you think it’s better that he’s been relegated already I would I think you need aen mahaney to be good for this team to reach its ceiling because the alternative is what playing H diara for 36 minutes in a game MH um my issue with mahany is the way he’s been playing even even this season but if we’re looking at the big games against Gonzaga which is the games that everybody watched of Aiden mahaney he’s at his best getting into the paint getting out the rim mid-range jumpers beating his man off the bounce he wasn’t a spot up shooter he had good shooting performances against Gonzaga in a couple of games he played against them but he wasn’t a spot-up shooter he was attack attack attack attack attack in the last five games he has taken three shots from two point range to what is nine from three and even earlier in the season he had more way more threes than twos but he looked better getting at The Rim when he was decisive and went at The Rim especially early in halves he was good he was making shots and then he would settle into shooting jumpers and that’s not his game so I think there’s a little bit of like finding where he fits on in this offense for Yukon because I don’t think that relegating Aiden mahany to being a just a pure three-point threat is going to do anybody any good yeah no I agree um we’ll see where it goes that’s a lot of mahany talk to start this certainly this game will come down in bigger things than but I felt obligated to start there given our back and forth this year so okay in the meantime got a self-correct on this Ahad Noel has been out and I got that wrong on the last Yukon recap when I wondered where Ahad Noel has been as an option but with given Mahan struggles and Noel’s injury situation it’s it essentially has become Hassan diara and that’s it at point guard and if he’s not on the floor they’ve kind of just cobbled together other other ways to play through forwards and wings and he’s coming off I think his best game of the season now that sounds a little crazy because he didn’t score the ball at all and went one for five from the floor but I think Yukon will take 11 assists to two turnovers and not care about what he’s doing scoring the basketball there’s enough scorers here with with solo ball and Liam mcney and caraban that that’s really all you need from your point guard um I guess from a scout perspective a lot of people believe Gonzaga has the best point guard in the country is the biggest mismatch in this game just Ryan neard versus whatever Yukon tries to do against Ryan neard I was gonna come in here with a little bit of a hot take for you about the point guard I think one of gonzaga’s biggest issues is point guard whoa not not Ryan neard to be clear but the fact that it it’s just Ryan neart interesting and if you can force Ryan mhart to get uncomfortable like West Virginia did in the second half like Kentucky did with the Zone you’re forcing Gonzaga ran a lot of like Nolan Hickman at the top with the ball trying to free up Ryan neard to make plays elsewhere and it didn’t work this team has no other playmakers that are consistent enough as Playmakers so yes starter for starter Ryan neart against tandara probably is the biggest mismatch in gonzaga’s favor the question is is that kamman Young’s going to figure out how scheme Ryan neard into difficult situations he’s going to figure out how to prevent Ryan neard from getting in getting paint touches to find open shooters or or get those contested layups and Gonzaga really doesn’t have anybody else and if you look at gonzaga’s history and I’m going to call these the Milestone teams the three teams that if you’re looking at the last 15 years will have their chapter in a story about Mark FW 2012 2013 had Stockton and Kevin pangos 2016 17 had Josh Perkins and Nigel Williams Goss in 2020 2021 had Andrew nard and Jaylen sucks this team is Ryan nard and Ryan nard only and if he’s not making plays the offense shuts down and it hurts the defense so we’ve gone back and forth on Graham eek’s uh play in in private conversations but I think to me the biggest issue is that there is a clear way to just throw wrench and gonzaga’s offense and it is basically try and scheme Ryan nard out as much as you can so okay that’s a great point and I haven’t thought of it that way and I think you’re right really right about it um Nolan Hickman doesn’t qualify for your cut off as like a secondary guy but I guess my question would be I because I completely agree based on who he’s been this year makes sense in the past hasn’t he been closer to like a guy that would fill that role and like is that by Design this year or I CU I guess I feel like these conversations when we do get on the EK route or anything with Gonzaga a lot of times what I feel like I hear from you is like the guy’s just got to play better and that’s a good spot to be in but like can Hickman fix this or is it roll want stuff like what is it so I I’m using the cut off of an assist rate of 15% right Gonzaga in the past their good teams have always had a lot of players who have had assists at at or above 15% uh but he did that for you two years ago yeah but he also didn’t he had he had 16.3 on a team where Drew Timmy had the highest assist rate on the team sure and then last year his assist rate dropped to 11.4 and this year his assist rate dropped even more to 7 .1 now I’m not saying he’s incapable and we’ve also seen caleff battle make some great passes make some great plays what I am saying is that this team has become an offense that centers around two players Ryan nard and Grammy K when he’s on the floor and if you can scheme Ryan nard out it becomes just gram e who is whether you think he should be on the floor or not who is struggling in a lot of games this season so I agree with you I think it has to be Nolan Hickman he just hasn’t been there and he really wasn’t there last year either I think last year it was Ryan nard going nuclear becoming a shooter late in the season and forcing teams to respect him at the three-point line so that he could make plays for others and also Graham e going nuclear at the same time yeah makes sense um you made a great point about kamman young and Luke Murray and we just watched I mean I mean they played Texas and it seemed like spot wise Texas at home would have been a really good spot against the Yukon team that’s underachieved and I remember Jim Roode made the point on uh on ball up top where he was like this is yukon’s Staff in preparation versus Rodney Terry staff don’t overthink this immediately it was obvious they were more well prepared I do feel like it’s very interesting to think about them with a week to prep for Ryan nard because what when I think about what you kind of struggled with defensively year like in Maui they got torched by guards off the dribble and in theory like nard will be able to find Avenues I think and get to spots that he wants but it’s kind of interesting I feel like you know Memphis and even Colorado to an extent and certainly Dayton they had guards that would get to their spot to score n hard’s not doing that from what I’ve seen this year so it almost feels like in a weird way that could negate the advantage Gonzaga should have against the perimeter defense of Yukon that’s been lacking because that’s just not how Ryan dehart’s wired anymore no he’s been okay uh coming off of screens and getting his shot like in the mid-range he’s been okay getting those contested layups but you’re right like he is right now wired to pass yeah and they run that midp pick and roll all the time and he shoots out of it maybe 5% of the time and it’s not like you’re it’s not like you’re upset if you’re Yukon and Samson Johnson gets out on Ryan M hard in like the same way that maybe other teams with more traditional bigs would be upset like it’s a mismatch sure but it’s not necessarily the end of the world um I just to me there’s a lot of reasons as a Gonzaga fan to be worried about this game and maybe that’s why I’m calling it not a must-win because I just think we haven’t even we haven’t even gotten to the meat of it which is they lost to Javon small and Tucker Dev they lost to Carr and Jackson Robinson and now they have to go up against solo ball and Alex cariban yeah yeah it’s scary when you frame it like that for sure um okay one more n hard point because I’m I’m just fascinated by his turn this year he’s like obviously he’s a great player and he’s doing some unprecedented production assist stuff right now um he’s also just like it’s like he’s transformed into my least favorite archetype on the planet like I I vent about this to Carter all the time if you have a point guard that is out there explicitly to hunt assists and not score I think it’s a limiting factor on teams I I complained about it with Xavier Simpson with my Michigan teams and Xavier Simpson took him to a national championship game so like I it’s not even NE necessarily correct for me to complain about it but if you go through the most similar kenpom years to what Ryan neh hard’s done through 10 games or however many games Xavier Simpson Frank Mason Phil pressie Dewan Harris tiger Campbell Yuri Collins Elijah Hawkins like it’s it’s a lot of elite it’s the elite of elite assist guys it’s also like six guys I would say sometimes hurt their own offenses by not looking for to score and I guess it’s interesting because I go through that personnelist Frank Mason was incredible but like Dean Harris is a guy that I just don’t think can score that well Xavier Simpson I felt like couldn’t score Elijah Hawkins sometimes like I think Ryan neard can score I think we’ve seen him do it in his career and it’s almost like it’s by Design like am I oversimplifying that a little bit no I don’t think so and you also have to look at the years it’s Dewan Harris last year where the offense was a mess and that was like the first year with Hunter Dickinson and I feel like they just kind of ran everything through two scores uh and it was Tiger Campbell in the year following the final four run yeah where U UCLA took a pretty decent size step back from the level they were operating at during that final four run with Johnny juang and haime hakz um no I don’t think I don’t think it like that is that to me is the Crux of the issue is that they have no Playmakers other than Ryan neard right now or no players making plays other than Ryan neard and he has become so focused on being the playmaker that he’s gotten rid of like he’s shooting what 40% from three yeah and he’s less less efficient from inside but he’s also like 5 foot 10 so I’m not going to hold that too much against him but he’s not taking any shots yeah yeah yeah it’s crazy it really is um and I just think back like earlier in his career like on the kraton teams like I I just felt like he was such a threat still and you know they had other good players around him but I just I would like to see him score more and I do think like matchup wise this is a game he could get going depending on I guess diar’s status here I mean he’s he’s full go but is diar gonna play 40 minutes is he GNA wear down because they don’t want to play mahaney and they don’t have a mod Noel are you going to go away from diara and have to guard somebody bigger on nard like there’s some opportunity for him to get going a little bit uh you mentioned the Yukon Wings they are are one of the best Wing trios in the country Personnel wise for sure um like when you stack them up with the teams that had success against Gonzaga is it just going to be the exact same formula in your mind or or is it GNA look different what do you think happens I’m I’m prepping you for this Greg um you’re going to see a lot of Ben Greg and Dusty strer in this game I think you’re going to see a lot of Dusty Stromer brought in on solo ball uh and I think you’re going to see a lot of Ben Greg brought in just because they’re not going to know really what to do with uh cariban and Ben Greg has been more effective offensively than Michael AI has been but to me it’s the solo ball thing it’s you’re going to see solo ball get a ton of good shots early in this game and Dusty stromer’s going to come in because as limiting as he is for this team he was the only player that was able to even throw a wrench in what Javon small wanted to do for West Virginia and he was one of the big reasons why Kobe BR had a bad game against Gonzaga so you buy Dusty as like a legitimately great defender I buy Dusty as a he’s always in the right position and he’ll get up in your grill and he’ll make things tough okay I don’t think he’s great uh I just don’t necessarily think he is the same he has the same highs and lows that guys like kff battle and Nolan Hickman have depending on how the offense is going and we’ve seen it in two three close games now where when Mark Fu’s trying to get a stop or trying to stop a player or run a player off the three-point line he brings in Dusty Stromer because Dusty Stromer will be in position to do that um um now if he gets the ball late and sees Kobe BR and decides not to go into his body and take it across the top of the Ark for some odd reason to lose the game it’ll hurt you uh but but defensively I think he is the most consistent defensive guard on this team yeah okay yeah I I mean I do see that I just don’t like it hon no you don’t have to you don’t have to yeah it’s just that’s what’s gonna happen go ahead go ahead grievin my biggest issue with Mark fuse Lake and not pulling Graham EK out not playing Dusty Stromer and watching him get scared on a final possession you were an athlete in high school I was an athlete in high school if you asked us to wait an entire game or an entire tennis match or whatever to come in for one final point three hours in when everyone else has been up to game speed and you were asking us to perform at a good level I don’t know about you I would not be ready for that for and that is exactly what Mark FW has done in these close games two games in a row two losses in a row at the end of regulation with Emanuel in aent and I just I think that to me is the biggest the biggest poor decision because in aent hasn’t played in these games other than oh there’s 10 seconds left we need a spot you who who’s cold hasn’t been been warmed up for at least 40 minutes since the halftime break you’re going to go out there and you’re going to try and get a stop on Tucker Dev or you’re G to try to get a stop on ego o like it’s just it boggles my mind why that happens and I I mean I’m not one to necessarily doubt markview but every time an aente comes in at the end of a close game I’m like why the dude’s not ready yeah but that’s that’s neither here nor there you have your issues with gr e cas playing time it’s it’s been a weird I think Bark’s just still trying to figure out the rotations and but it’s been a weird end of game coaching run for him this season yeah I just to oversimplify and air out stuff that I’ve said to you privately for people to hear um I just I I this is how I’m wired with all college basketball teams and always have been it always will be I I think coaches can get too cute with trying to play too many guys and pulling the right strings at the right times and more often than not this just comes down to is your best five better than the other team’s best five and Gonzaga is one of the loudest teams in the country this year to me where I view their best five as like Elite and I think the numbers back this up even with inconsistencies along the way we love Evan Mia here Evan Mia’s Evan M C is in one of the group chats with us and he’s got all this awesome lineup data out there Gonzaga lineup data with with a ji battle Hickman EK nard it’s the 23rd best lineup in all of college basketball and as far as I can tell from scrolling through this they don’t have other lineups that are very close Yukon for what it’s worth is similar when they go ball diara Johnson caraban McNeil they’re one spot lower than Gonzaga and here’s a point actually in favor of Mark F who I’ve been blasting for this gonzaga’s good lineup has played over 120 possessions more than the Yukon good lineup has played this year so to me at least few know like I don’t think f is unaware of who his best five are it just to your point in the high leverage spots it has felt to me like rarely are those five on the floor I think that was the story at the end of uh the the the last loss for sure in West Virginia I was screaming about EK the whole game so I look I don’t know guys do need to play more consistently I see it I see all of the issues we’re talking about but to me it’s just like that the ceiling for this team is getting those five players to play through their issues figure it out not have Dusty Stromer come save the day and I do think Dusty’s been admirable he’s making shots he definitely is the guy that doesn’t miss a defensive assignment but um I don’t know where it goes but it’s interesting when thinking about this matchup versus Yukon because it does feel like the shift for Hurley has kind of happened like he has really trimmed the rotation to this lineup that is working in a way he didn’t have have it before Maui and I don’t know if I feel like Fu has gotten where I want him to get with that yet no and and this is where we’re the two we’re two sides of the same coin I’ve been saying this I think gramy e needs to play more I think part of the reason why he hasn’t been playing more is he’ll miss a couple of shots get a quick foul come out in the games where he’s out Braden Huff plays well Mark fu is Bren Huff in too long then chicken egg gramy K doesn’t play as much if you looked at the San Diego State game he was pulled after like three four minutes only played four minutes in the first half because he got two quick fouls then played like 16 or 17 minutes in the second half because he was dominating um he especially at the Five Spot marks view has been running hotand I think it’s becoming more and more clear that the early season Huff was a bit of an apparition uh EK has been coming on stronger the last couple of games outside of that West Virginia game so I think you’ll see more EK in this game assuming he doesn’t get into foul but uh you’re right like I hurle to the 120 possessions or whatever stat you brought up a lot of that was because hurle was playing mahaney so much early on in the season yeah I think if you were to look at the last five games the best Yukon lineup probably will have played more possessions than the best Gonzaga lineup but uh Hurley’s made that inseason correction Mark FW I feel like is still trying to figure out the four spot and still trying to figure out like who his secondary ball handler playmaker has to be to take some of that pressure off of Ryan neard yeah and I mean to your point too like I don’t know how much aay has been contributing to that lineup being so good right because he he really has been a disaster offensively he’s been a really good defensive he’s been their probably their highest most efficient defensive player all around better than Dusty Stromer it’s just you a lot of these teams you’re looking at Dusty Stromer shutting down an elite guard and you’re looking at a ji going after like an OK Forman yeah um def offensively he’s been atrocious and that’s why I think Ben Greg has been in so many of these games like a Jai is shooting 21% from Deep a lot of his makes from from around the rim are followup like offensive rebounds um and he’s just he came in as like one of the best catch and shoot players in in the country last year and it’s just gone sideways for him and at least Ben Greg started off slow but he’s finding his spots especially underneath when they when you double EK uh and he knows the system a little bit better and so I think Fu just trusts Ben Greg more than a ji right now yeah makes sense uh this is Dan Hurley in the world’s most famous arena where uh he was watching Billy Joel in the summer so he’s got to be excited about that we know that’s a big deal to Dan Hurley um last thing for me and then we’ll do our predictions uh you just gave us great reasons why yukon’s wings are a nightmare matchup for Gonzaga I think we hit on this but maybe didn’t say it this bluntly gonzaga’s two best players are in my opinion somewhat of matchup nightmares or problems for yukon’s two weak positions I mean this game really could boil down to just like is Graham eek destroying Samson Johnson and terce Reed those are two very foul prone bigs we talked about EK getting in foul trouble to me I that is one thing I’m watching for sure which front court is in foul trouble first um and then can nard just score for himself a little bit and capitalize on beating yukon’s guards off the dribble to me if your answers to those questions are yes for Gonzaga I do see a pretty clear path to a Gonzaga win in a critical spot but I don’t know again do you think that’s the right formula like I can’t imagine Yukon or excuse me Gonzaga winning this game without big performances from nart and EK just just beating better players at those spots EK needs to be the top scorer on the floor for Gonzaga and I think it needs to be by a pretty decent margin um but on the same token you need Hickman’s been shooting well 41% on the season uh it’s just in some of these games he was one of seven against Kentucky he was one of six against Arizona State some of these games where Gonzaga either had close calls or losses he just wasn’t hitting his shots um and then like you said I do think that nart has to take advantage of because a lot of it’s going to be okay it’s it’s diara on nard Samson Johnson maybe Terrace Reed on on EK if they’re running man you’re going to run the midp pick and roll they can either switch which is still a mismatch I think for at both positions or diara can try and fight through fight over the top and then hick or nart has to take that shot yeah I don’t care if he misses it you have to take that shot um there’s just a lack of confidence I think across this Gonzaga team from a shooting perspective that only Dusty Stromer seems to have not caught because he’s been pretty consistent as a three-point shooter in all of these games on lower lower attempts but still like he’s shooting 52% from Deep um he can’t be your top three-point three-point shooter so I I agree with the formula is get Gram Eek A Touch every single possession obviously Ryan mhart is going to have a touch every single possession run the pick and roll and then try and find Shooters out of that if they can defend that well enough because if they’re running a help at n hard there’s going to be a Hickman or a kff battle open on the perimeter cff’s in a slump but like both of them can make threes we’ve seen that at points this year gonzago was shooting over 40% from three through the first three games and then San Diego State did something to them that just absolutely ruined that so you need to get back to that that’s really the only formula for Gonzaga to win this game yeah yeah it’s a good shout it uh this should be a really fun game if I mean you kind of hope both teams play well I think cuz entertainment value wise this could be a big one it to me it’s going to be like a who can execute better like I I see mismatch in m mismatches in favor of both teams in areas where like they want to win the game from so it’s like who’s best is better than who’s best here in Hurley versus F in Madison Square Garden by the way at MSG they had the the event midweek at MSG Arkansas Michigan delivered a very entertaining game with a bunch of made shots and even to some extent Tennessee Miami had a lot of high shot making so if both offenses get going maybe you see some bounce back games from Shooters and uh this ends up a really really fun watch we will give a prediction here so dimer Pro is our presenting sponsor all things sleepers media for our preview and Recaps this season dimer Pro is an Analytics tool that uh has sleepers you can get 20% off your first month with dimer Pro so check that out for now we’ll use the kenpom line kenpom likes Gonzaga 80 to 76 at Madison Square Garden here uh who do you think wins and buy how much I think Yukon wins I think it’s going to be a high-scoring game I think you’re going the and that’s the reason why I say that I think you’re going to see a lot of Dusty Stromer because I think solo ball is going to get what he wants early I think Alex cariban is the only player on the floor who well I guess Hassan diar was on the team but like Alex caraban is a national championship caliber player who knows how to win these games and oh yeah you shut down those too and you still have to account for Liam McNeely on the wing um Gaga’s I think going to bounce back offensively I just think there’s a lot of moving pieces still so give me Yukon I think it’s going to be high scoring I’m GNA go Yukon 87 Gonzaga 83 I hope that’s how it plays out I really do I and I do trust both teams to make shots I think in this game um I’m going to be on the same side as you here I don’t feel great about it because I I see a very clear path to a Gonzaga Victory if they just execute like I I think inaga is a better basketball team than Yukon I really do but right now I owe it to Yukon I think to put a little faith behind them I was so out on them after Maui I took Texas to beat him last week and I just I hated watching that game so much I’m like how did I possibly pick against these this coaching staff uh right now I mean I I have to put my heart behind the staff I believe in and comparatively I mean you’ve heard me after every Gonzaga game for a month I’m like what is the staff doing it would feel wrong for me to to back that staff given right now if I’m wrong I’ll almost be happy because that means like Gaga fix some of their issues to me but to me it really is going to come down to like n hard’s gotta feature as a scorer a little bit here I think and EK might go off but terce Reed’s been sney good if Samson Johnson gets in foul trouble I kind of trust Terrace to at least hang a little bit anyway in there um and if Nar was scoring a little better I think I would take in zaga here but he’s not so give me Yukon give me the staff I trust in Billy Joel’s home arena that’s Conor ho I’m Greg wadell we’ll be back to recap this after the weekend good
