underwhelmed they’ve played one high major opponent so far and it was against pit at Pitts Place granted but they they got smoked in that game they lost by 24 points Darion Dev maybe he gets there eventually but this year is probably not their year and they’re playing whom I think is at worst the second best team in the country in Gonzaga I have resident Gonzaga expert Connor hope with me Connor what are you looking for out of this game well I mean I think it was telling that uh you got little game Tucker Dev in that game against pit if you look at his offensive rating which I know is not a perfect metric 102 against Robert Morris 109 against Massachusetts 133 against diona 53 against pit uh he shot what two of 10 from the floor um two turnovers five fouled out in the game so like I think there is something to it maybe not to the degree that people make it out to be but there is something to the the idea that Tucker D eats mid- major competition and then struggles against good competition um for Gonzaga I think what I’m looking for is again uh I want to see them win a game in which they’re shooting well because the last two games against San Diego State and Long Beach J granted both defenses come from the same philosophy uh Aker was an assistant for Dutcher before going to Long Beach State makes it difficult to make shots we saw that from San Diego State against kraton today but I still think I want to see a game in which Gonzaga is performing at their Peak uh kind of offensive output because if you look at Gonzaga over the years they have not ranked outside the top 10 in effective field goal percentage since 2018 um they were 11th in 2018 uh they have not been outside the top I’m not going to go even go back far enough they have not been outside the top 20 since 2011 mhm in effective field goal percentage this year so far they’re 34th so I think a lot of that has to do with graham EK missing some bunnies um on and off kind of three-point shooting performances from Michael aay and Braden Huff um and I mean I guess caleff battle has been off I the past two games but if they can if they can get that like field goal percentage number effective field goal percentage number back up closer to like 60 uh I think they’re the number one team in not turning the ball over in the country right now West Virginia isn’t a team that’s going to turn them over so just make your shots and you win this game yeah I I like that angle that you’re approaching it from it I mean the spread for this game will probably be Gonzaga by 15 that’s what Kim pom currently has it at so it’ll be somewhere in that ballpark I I I think it gets more out of hand than that I don’t really trust Tucker D and against this level of competition just based on what we’ve seen the last few years I don’t really I mean like Javon small maybe I think he can do a little bit off the bounce he at least has a lot of high major experience outbe it on a terrible team last year um but I just don’t think they have enough Firepower Monty hayesbury is like their the the lone big who you theoretically trust the lone big with like pedigree um he fouled out against pit which I think is pretty alarming that if if pit was a able to foul him out I believe both gramy eek and Bren Huff can get him in trouble as well all that has to say I think Gonzaga handles business pretty easily here but to your point it would be nice to see them make some threes just looking at they they shot 33% against Long Beach State I can’t remember the percentage off the top of my head against s dieo State I knew they just made five so yeah that this would be a good Get Right game uh as they adjust to this dark dimly lit Ballroom that they’ll be playing in this week yeah and I think if you look at that Javon small is the one matchup defensively for Gonzaga that I worry about a little bit because ammani Hansberry is is good but I don’t think it’s gonna he’s not like outrageously good to the point where Grammy K Bren Huff can’t handle him um my guess is you put micheel aay on on Tucker Dev and if you do that then caleff battle has to kind of ke on okani to start the game um just because I the size differential between Hickman and and Ne hard and okani is be too great but I do think a is the best defender and so I think you have to put him on to slow him down uh and then that leaves you with kind of a choice between do you put Hickman on Javon small and have the size mismatch between sincer Harris and Ryan neard or do you do the opposite and just kind of hope that nard is good enough defensively I think that’s the route you’d take is you put nard just straight up on on the other team’s point guard and let them go at it let the best point guard win um so but you know if we’re looking at this game we’re like uh that was closer than you would have liked and I think that’s the way we’re talking about it I don’t think zaga loses this game but if it’s closer than I would like I think that has everything to do with the play of Javon small and nobody else in this game yeah Javon Small’s a good shout I mean even when you look at his his steel rate so far this year is pretty outrageous he’s had more than four deals in two games already maybe theoretically he can pressure those Gonzaga guards a little bit um you desperately need his shot creation and he’s he’s largely answered the Bell um I I I just still think that he and Dev isn’t really enough to get it done here and that’s why I’m still I’m still thinking Gonzaga wins Big we can go ahead and get get our score predictions in but I’m going to say Gonzaga maybe doesn’t cross the 100 threshold just because like I said it is a dark and dimly lit Ballroom that you got to get used to but I I see them eclipsing 90 um I think they win something like 90 to 70 um that would be would be my guess maybe they even can hold West Virginia a little bit lower than that uh again like West Virginia’s they they’ve had a decent decently productive offense so far but I I just keep going back to that pit game it’s the lone I know it’s a small sample size but it’s the only example we have of this team so far uh basically playing an opponent with a pulse and they just were were really really bad in that game yeah I I I think they could threaten the 90 Mark I’m not quite sure because it’s their first game in that Ballroom because West Virginia’s been so good on first shot defenses um they they give up a lot of offensive rebounds which I think works in gonzaga’s favor because Gonzaga is one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country but I think they’re good enough defensively where Maybe Gonzaga hits a lull at some point in this game so I’m going to go 89 for Gonzaga just to just to hedge bets I don’t think they quite hit the 90 Mark uh give me 89- 68 like a 21-point win you feel good about the defense the offense gets going a little bit uh and I think this is going to be one of those big Michael aay games because I don’t think there’s a matchup that West Virginia has that that can handle his size length in athle and it does feel a little bit like he’s du but we’re both in
