NFL free agency is a very big deal and is one of the biggest days of the league year in the 2024 free agency period was no different and whether it was the Falcons thinking Kurt Cousins was the missing piece or the Titans bringing in Calvin Ridley to help out their Young quarterback or even the Texans bringing denil Hunter home the 2024 free agent class was a fun and exciting time for several NFL teams and the big difference between free agency and the draft is free agents are established veterans and are expected to contribute immediately and then today’s video we’re going to go back and grade several big free agent signings from the 2024 class several games in with their new team there will also be several grades at the end for players not discussed thoroughly in today’s video and there is a lot to dive into and without further Ado let’s begin and we are starting today’s video with Vikings pass rusher Jonathan grenard grenard signed a 4-year $76 million deal this offseason with 38 of it being guaranteed and what matters most within NFL contracts when you hear these big numbers being tossed out is the guarantees so in the absolute worst case the Vikings would be able to get out of the contract after the 2025 off season because only 38 of the 76 was guaranteed but the Vikings aren’t going to have to worry about that as through 10 games grard has 50 plus pressures and he’s fourth in the NFL in pressures only behind Trey Hendrickson of the Bengals Zack Allen of the Broncos and Nick Bose of the 49ers who is a former Defensive Player of the Year aard winner pressures are very important and sacks are too and grard also has seven sacks in 10 games and right now he is on Pace for around 75 or 80 pressures along with 12 sacks which is what he had last year with the Texans and what’s key to remember is the Vikings had to replace pass rusher denil Hunter and we’ll get to denil in a minute but denil finished his 2023 season his final season in Minnesota with 80 pressures and 16 and a half sacks and also led the league in tackles for a loss with 23 obviously denil was going to command a high contract and he receiv receiv received a hefty contract from the Texans as he signed a 2-year $49 million contract which equates to 24.5 million per year gernard is not as good of a pass rusher as Den Neil Hunter at least that’s what it was perceived by NFL teams and he signed a deal worth an average of 19 million per year so with the money left over that the Vikings were going to have they were also able to sign other free agents like Andrew van GLE and like Blake Cashman and those two players have been very key pieces in Brian Flores defense and ultimately the 2024 Vikings success what was always going to be tricky for the Vikings entering the 2024 season was how much dead cap money they have from previous contracts Kurt Cousins alone has a $28.5 million dead cap hit and this is per overthecap.com denal Hunter has a $14.9 million dead cap hit Marcus Davenport has a $6.8 million dead cap hit and the Vikings had over 65 million do in Dead cap money in 2024 again all per over the cap and what that means is they are paying over $65 million for players who are not playing for the team in 2024 so the big thing for the Vikings entering the 2024 free agency cycle was any player they sign has to hit and whether it was Jonathan gernard Andrew van gingle Blake hashman even Sam darnold and Aron Jones they all have hit and even Stefan Gilmore for that matter too I will be honest I was a little worried about Jonathan grard coming off of a big year in a contract year for the Texans and whenever the team decided to move on from denal Hunter there was a little part of me that was worried that we were signing a guy that was going to be a flop initially because I thought he was going to be the typical have a big year in a contract year and then regress back to the player that he was over the first few years of his career but grenard has been anything but that he’s been a tremendous player and in the first eight games of his Vikings tenure he had five or more pressures in every game and the reason why he hasn’t had five or more pressures in each of the last two games was because Jonathan grard only had 19 pass rushing snaps against the Jags in week 10 and only 29 pass rushing snaps against the Titans in week 11 because the Vikings offense was on the field far more than the defense was all in all grenard has been a phenomenal player and he’s provided top seven or eight Edge production and I think you could definitely make a case that he’s had top five or six Edge production all for around $19 million per year and that is great production for the cost that the Vikings signed him for in free agency and a couple of months later this grade is an A+ the Green Bay Packers signed safety Xavier mckin 2 a 4year $67 million contract and there was a lot of people who thought this was a lot for who Xavier mckin is as a player I thought it was a good deal for the Packers but I also understood the train of thought of where people were coming from but the main reason that I liked this deal for Green Bay as much as I did want it happened was they only gave Xavier 23 of the 67 guaranteed and like we said what matters within NFL contracts is the guarantees and in the absolute worst case Xavier was a free agent bust which he is definitely not a free agent bust they could have been out of the contract really after year without too big of an implication on the salary cap in 2025 and Beyond and in zavier first 10 games he has six interceptions which ranked second in the NFL only behind the lion safety Kirby Joseph due in large part two mckin the Packers already have more turnovers forced in 2024 in 10 games than they had in 17 games in 2023 and a lot of the Packers excitement heading into 2024 aside from Jordan love and especially with the playoff game that he had against the Cowboys and the Flash that he showed down the stretch of the 2023 season was having Jeff Halley as the defensive coordinator instead of Joe Barry and we’ve seen that through the first 10 games but one of the other big reasons that I really really liked this signing for the Packers was Xavier mckin was a very young free agent he is only 25 years old and due in large part to co with players having red shirt years and Co years in college the average age of college prospects coming out in the draft has increased from back in in 2020 when Xavier was a prospect to now where guys still have the co years and and the red shirt years not that red shirts are a brand new thing but when you combine both red shirt and Co years the average age significantly rised and for reference Xavier mckin is in his fifth NFL season and is only about six months older than Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Knicks I like Bo Knicks I think he’s a great player I think his future is very bright in the NFL but he was an older Prospect doing large part to all of this and the point is is Xavier mckin was a very young free agent and the Packers have been reaping the benefits of paying a player while also potentially having him for the next several years and if Xavier plays at this level for the next couple of years there’s no doubt that he will eventually receive a third contract because he was a 21-year-old rookie back in 2020 so when you look at the long-term impact of this contract because again Xavier is just 25 years old and the fact that he is still such a young player and playing at a high level there’s a chance that he could be a ER for seven or eight years if everything goes right now I don’t want to get into the projection of what he could be in four five 6 years but the point is he is playing at a very high level and this contract has been absolutely worth it for the Packers and Xavier is currently the sixth highest paid safety in terms of the average value of contracts or in terms of the total value of contracts rather and it was an allaround great signing for the Packers and this would be an easy a plus grade from what we’ve seen so far the Packers also made big news by signing Josh Jacobs and there was actually a triangle of running backs as the Vikings got Aaron Jones the Packers got Josh Jacobs and the Raiders got Alexander Madison and I think the Packers did just fine within this triangle of running backs I think Josh Jacobs has also been a really good player for them and he is top five in the NFL and rushing yards and anytime you can turn around hand the ball off especially with not necessarily A Young quarterback in Jordan love but rather an inexperienced quarterback because he’s only played one full season as the starter despite being in his fifth year I think that’s that can’t be viewed as anything but a positive so I really thought the Packers did a great job in terms of bringing in players like Xavier mckin and like Josh Jacobs and I thought they really did a good job in free agency and I would also give the Josh Jacob signing an A+ because he signed a 4-year $48 million contract which obviously sounds like a lot for a running back in free agency and it is but only 12 of Josh Jacobs 48 million was guaranteed so if Jacobs hits the cliff which is possible given that he is a running back the team is still very much protected so I thought the Packers did a tremendous job with both Xavier mckin and Josh Jacobs by being able to sign great players in the present day and while also being able to protect the team and the financial implications that would have if either player was a free agent bust thankfully for Green Bay neither player has been and both grades right now are in A+ the Atlanta Falcons gave Kurt Cousins a 4-year $180 million contract with 100 of it being guaranteed coming off of a torn Achilles and this grade is not going to be as simple as well the Falcons have not won a Super Bowl yet they’re not 10 and one and therefore it’s an F because that’s what they brought Kirk Cousins in to do it’s a little more complicated and what has to be remembered is the Falcons were still a seven- 10 team last year and they are probably going to be a nine or 10 team win this year and they are probably going to win the division and that was my thought process when this contract was signed was that the Falcons are going to upgrade the quarterback position enough to propel them to win the division and it’s looking like that’s what’s going to be the case the 2023 Falcons at times were incredibly frustrating as if even a couple of games go just a bit different instead of being seven- 10 they’re a N9 and8 team maybe even a 10- s team and maybe they even get into the playoffs last year the commander game in particular was frustrating as they lost by one score and committed three turnovers and there was a very ugly Red Zone interception in that game that obviously took points off the board the Vikings game was also very frustrating as they lost to Josh dobs and the Cardinals game was also very frustrating because the Falcons lost by two points in a game where their quarterbacks combined were just 12 of 18 for 94 yards and whatever you think of Kurt Cousins I would be willing to bet that Kirk would have had a better game in any of those games than what the Falcons quarterbacks had so bringing in Kirk Cousins was an immediate upgrade at a position that they desperately needed now what also needs to be remembered within this grade is we are not factoring in the Michael penick’s draft pick at all that happened 6 weeks after the fact and that has nothing to do with Kurt Cousins the free agent signing can you question whether it was a good decision to draft a quarterback number eight overall after you paid a $180 million contract with 100 of it being guaranteed absolutely but that doesn’t factor into the free agent signing of Kirk himself and whether you know this or not Kirk is currently top five in the NFL in passing yards and top seven in passing touchdowns he has been a really solid player for the Falcons in 2024 outside of a game here or there and obviously given that they just lost 386 to the Broncos that’s not a good game for Kirk or for anybody the defense also would be included in that and to blame that loss on Kirk would not be fair but Kirk for the most part has been a pretty good player for the Falcons obviously we all know about the financial success Kirk Cousins has had whether it was signing a fully guaranteed contract back in 2018 or even a couple of year contract extension with the Vikings back in 2020 or most recently the 4-year $180 million contract with the Falcons with 100 of it being guaranteed and credit goes to Kirk’s agent Mike McCartney for being able to negotiate that type of contract for Kirk coming off of a major injury but when you break down what is really asked of Kirk and again per average annual value he is the 12th highest paid player at his position I think he’s been about what you would expect the Falcons have a lot of problems on their roster that is out of Kirk’s control and the defense is obviously one of them but for the Kirk Cousins contract specifically I would have it right now around a B+ now one signing that I absolutely was not a fan of at the time and left hand up I was wrong because I thought this was an overpay for who he is as a player and I thought the 10,000 yard season that darno Moody had back in 2021 was going to be an outlier and it’s very much looking like that’s not going to be an outlier because he’s probably going to have a 1,000 yard season this year is the three-year $39 million contract for Darnell Mooney and I would give Terry fno an A+ for that signing overall I think the Falcons did really good and they achieved what their goal was which was to improve the offense in a big way and it’s looking like it’s going to result in an n South title which was the whole point of bringing in Kurt Cousins it looks like they can win the division and at this point I think they will Kurt Cousins B+ daro Mooney beyond a shadow of a doubt an A+ signing for the Falcons denil Hunter signed a 2-year $49 million contract with 48 of a being guaranteed with the Texans this off season and I thought this deal was extremely beneficial for both sides obviously the Texans were getting a very good football player in denil Hunter and obviously denil was getting very well compensated with most of the contract being guaranteed and a bonus was even if denil flopped as a free agent which he certainly hasn’t the Texans would still be protected because it’s only a 2-year deal and anytime a team can sign a player to a one or twoyear deal I am all for it really regardless of cost especially in the Texans case because even if denil didn’t work out it’s not like they were not going to be able to not pay CJ stout or will Anderson when the time would come because of Den’s contract they will still be able to pay both CJ and Will Anderson and and what I think is really beneficial and a part that you can’t place money on is what will Anderson learns every day from denil denil has been in the league for a very long time and he was drafted all the way back in 2015 which was also pton Manning’s final year whether you know this or not denil just turned 30 years old as he was the youngest player in the league during his entire rookie season and he was still a very young player even in his second season because he didn’t turn 22 all the way until October of his second season so denal is a very young player to desite being as accomplished as he is and right now he has 95 career sacks and I think there’s a very good chance that he hits 100 sacks by season’s end but why I also like this signing was there’s a real chance that after this contract is up that denil being just 31 years old when the contract is up will be able to sign an additional two or three year with the Texans and be able to continue to be will Anderson’s teammate during that time period given that he signed a contract for an average annual value of 24.5 million per year this wasn’t just some signing where let’s bring in some Wy old vet and hopefully that he can teach Will Anderson how to be a truly great pass rusher as will won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award last year no this was a signing where hey we had a really good season in our first year with CJ stra demo Ryan and Will Anderson let’s try and make a Super Bowl push and bring in a truly Elite pass rusher and that’s exactly what the Texans did denil is currently fifth in the NFL in pressures and what’s also pretty cool about the deal hunter career Arc if you will is he was a young pass rush at a time kind of getting molded in the same way that will Anderson is currently by denil by a player named Everson Griffin Everson and denil were a very fun Duo to watch in Minnesota for a couple of years and now we get to watch denil and Will Anderson get after the AFC quarterbacks and they are both very very good players and hopefully we get to see this du over the next four or five years and what’s also a bonus about this is denil moved to America from Jamaica when he was about 8 years old and his high school is only about 30 mi from NRG Stadium so while that doesn’t have actually anything to do with football I thought that that was a bonus cool fact about the denal hunter going home to the Houston signing and as you can imagine given that he already has 7 and a half sacks he will probably have double digit sacks this year is fifth in the NFL in pressures and is also a great locker room guy and we’ve seen him beat guys like pan Su on tape a couple of times this year this is an A+ grade I also really liked what the Texans did by bringing in both Deno arri and aiz Al Shyer from the Titans and anytime you can make your team better and make a division rival in the process to me is great General managing and I thought Nick cerio did a tremendous job there are several other free agent grades from the 2024 free agent class on the screen and this video was made possible by the NFL I recently have partnered directly with the NFL through the Creator access pass program and it truly could not be possible without your guys support so thank you to the NFL for making this video possible thank
