they need to address their offense after finishing second in goals last year they now sitting at 22nd in that category it’s a shocking drop especially when compared to their Stellar defensive performance where they’ve jumped from 21st last year to fifth this season What’s Happening Here is a complete flip of Fortunes last season the Leafs relied heavily on offensive Firepower to carry them often winning high-scoring Affairs this season however they’ve embraced a more defensive-minded system and while the results have been positive in terms of goals against they’re now struggling to put the puck in the net to be clear I’m all for improved defense defense wins championships and teams with strong defensive systems tend to Faire better in the postseason high-scoring teams that rely on winning five to four games often fall short when the pressure is on something we’ve seen with the Leafs in previous years this season they’re averaging 2.90 goals per game while allowing just 2.60 last year they were scoring 3.63 but also allowing 3.18 while their goal differential was was slightly better last season the drop in goals allowed is a clear positive despite the defensive Improvement the Leaf’s offensive struggles are still evident they’ve adopted a more balanced fiveman system one that’s defensively sound but less explosive in attack this shift has worked in many Max posi already has been a solid addition but he’s better suited for a third line role the veterans High hockey IQ could be put to better use alongside Fraser Minon and Max doy leaving Bobby McMahon to replace pontis halberg on the fourth line McMahon’s big body presence and ability to chip in offensively would adep to that line as for halberg he hasn’t shown much offensively so McMahon would be a better option there but the bigger issue is that the Leafs need another offensive weapon for their second line This is where a player like Taylor Hall could be the answer the former heart Trophy winner and pending free agent would be a great fit for the Leafs especially with his ties to Toronto though his stats haven’t been spectacular this season he’s playing on a struggling team and playing alongside John tarez and William neander could bring out the best in him Hall’s addition could provide the offensive spark the Leafs are missing if not him there will surely be other options available
